THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER Tips for Keeping your Dog Healthy & Happy

A

lthough it’s fun spending the “Dogs Days of Summer” with your dog, always give some thought to the steps you can take to protect and pamper your pup throughout this sizzling season. ● Avoid Prolonged Exposure to Sun & Heat. Dogs can get sunburn and heat exhaustion, so limit time in the direct sunshine and hot temperatures. Tip: Apply sunblock to your dog’s ears and nose 30 minutes before going outside and be on the lookout for signs of overheating. ● Provide Clean & Cold Water . Carry cold bottled water when headed out on a walk or on the road. Keeping him cool and hydrated is the summer rule. Note: If you are water bound, don’t rely on natural bodies of water for a quick drink – parasites, bacteria and salt water are not a dog’s best friend. ● Prep the Pup Pool. If your dog loves being in the water, provide him relief from the heat by putting a non-inflatable “kiddie pool”

under a shady tree. If you just want to provide a cool spray of water don’t forget your pups paws and bellies. And, for some it’s “AC all the way!” ● Protect your Pooch from Poison: When taking your dog out for some exercise or play, avoid chemically treated lawns and areas. ● Protect the Paws. The pads on dogs’ paws are susceptible to burns so avoid prolonged exposure to hot asphalt or sand. ● Put on the Pet I.D. Should you and your dog become separated, tags containing his name and your number, provide quick contact info. So always keep his collar and tags on for easy ID. ● Don’t Forget to Pamper your Pup. Keep a bag packed with essentials such as treats, a chew toy, an extra leash and cold water so you can “grab and go” on summer day trips and outings. Convenience and satisfaction is key, so find treats that your dog likes, which are also good for him, and are easy to pack.

● Not All Dogs are Party Animals. The highest incident rate of runaway dogs is on July 4th. Many dogs are spooked, some terrified, by fireworks and will bolt. So keep an extra close watch on your pet and make sure they are on a leash or securely inside before any fireworks begin. ● NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A PARKED CAR (even if you crack the windows.)
