Epley Cattle / MLM Gelbvieh 27th Annual Production Sale

Page 1

Welcome!

We would like to welcome you all to our 27th Annual Production Sale. We are excited to invite you to our new sale facility and location. Most of the locals know the history at this place, but for those that don’t know, I’ll fill you in. The Epley’s settled on this land in 1876, and I (Cole) am 7th generation on this little farm on Road 4000. Marlin’s dad, Alfred, was my great-grandmother’s brother. Alfred worked for my great-grandfather for a few years before buying this quarter of land and starting his own farm and raising a family here with his wife MaryAnn. After MaryAnn moved to assisted living, Marlin, Lyle, and Julie thought it would be fitting for Amber and I to purchase the quarter back from them and raise our family here as well. We will forever be grateful for the opportunities and generosity the Meyer’s have given us. So although the sale is in a different place and may have a little twist on the name, it has all come full circle. We are very happy to have answered prayers this past summer and added the 8th generation on this farm. Krew Gerald made his appearance on June 28th, and is already excited to be around the cows. He has made our busy life even more hectic and tiring, but we are so happy and excited to have a little one to share this life with. Hopefully he will share the same passion for cattle and farming that we have.

The cattle market is setting record after record high. Last year in our welcome letter we said that 900 lb steers were worth over $2000, and I thought that was crazy. This week, as I am typing this, the weekly weighted average on 900 lb steers was just $6 short of $2400. Every time we think this market can’t go any higher, it proves us wrong. Hopefully it stays strong for the cow-calf producer!

We have always taken great pride in the productivity of our cows and this year was no different, as we were 8th in the nation in Dams of Dominance. We treat our cows as if they were a commercial herd and they don’t get any special treatment. Of the 34,861 cows assessed, only 5.32% were honored with the title of Dam of Merit and just over 1% qualified for Dam of Distinction. We had 49 total cows qualifying out of 88 eligible cows, with 43 as Dams of Merit and 7 as Dams of Distinction. In our herd, we had 56.82% of our eligible cows qualify. The majority of the bulls in the sale offering are out of these Dams of Dominance.

We will be offering 32 bulls this year. We will have 2 black purebred bulls and the rest of the offering are Balancers, red and black (several homozygous black by pedigree or DNA) and polled (all Homozygous Polled by pedigree or DNA). The bulls were weaned in September and fed a ration that was designed for a 2.75 lb / day gain. They ran out on 50 acres of pasture while being supplemented feed up until the first of the year. We did this to keep their feet in good shape and keep them athletic and not lazy. They have been grown slow to ensure longevity on your ranch. All of the bulls have been DNA tested, have a negative BVD PI3 test, and will be semen tested by Dr. Cade Moses of South Central Veterinary Hospital.
