Wilkinson Red Angus Private Treaty Bull Sale

Page 1

Greetings Cattlemen and Cattlewomen!

We appreciate your interest in our genetics!

First and foremost, we would like to send out some big thank you’s - to our potential customers for their interest, to our previous customers for their continued support, to the great vet clinics that we are fortunate to do business with (Cross Country Genetics, Coffey County Vet Services, Countryside Vet Clinic) and to our family, neighbors and landlords, whose support is vital to our operation.

If you’re new to our sale, we will follow a private treaty bid-off format. We set a base price on every bull and record interested parties for each bull up to the sale. On sale day, we then proceed with phone bidding between all interested parties for each bull. Highest bidder takes the bull. We feel this format is a low-pressure, convenient way for us to generate a little more income on the bulls with more interest while also giving bidders the chance to switch bids at any time to a different bull of their liking if they desire a lower price. Bulls will be available for in-person viewing anytime beginning March 1st. If you have purchased from us in previous years, you will notice we have raised our base price on the bulls. At the time I am writing this, a 700 lb steer will bring a little over $2000 at several sale barns in our area. I raised the base price to reflect the price that the commercial producer would get for approximately 3-700 lb steers. However, there is still some variation. We also understand not everyone needs a bull every year. If you don't, we would be immensely grateful if you would please pass this catalog along to a neighbor or leave it at your local elevator or sale barn.

The bulls are being grown on a 3lb/day ration and out in 2-8 acre traps where they have to walk nearly a quarter mile uphill for water, while being fed at the bottom of the hill. We feel this encourages good flesh and keeps the bulls in-shape and athletic. The 2 traps are divided with a hot wire and bulls have been on some fescue. We feel growing the bulls in these conditions sets them up for a successful future as breeding bulls. The bulls have all passed their BSEs and are on current vaccinations. We have a strict culling process for both disposition and soundness. We have not, nor will we ever, trim their feet prior to the sale (a practice we have learned is more common than we thought). Here, what you see is what you get.

We are always available for questions or just to visit about our herd or yours. We encourage you to come spend some time viewing the bulls and their dams in person but if you can't, we will have videos and photos available on our website at www.wilkinsonredangus.com and more can be taken upon request.

Something new we added to our catalog this year are a few ads from neighbors/friends who we have done or are doing business with currently. Please don't hesitate to reach out to them if you see something that peaks your interest.

It appears as 2025 is going to be one of the best cattle markets we have all ever experienced. Hopefully it leads to each of you prospering in your ranching endeavors.

Certificate of Registry: A certificate of Registry for each animal will be given to the buyer upon completion of purchase.

ET Calves: Due to ET calves being born to recip cows, EPDs are a more accurate representation of the calf’s potential than actual birth or weaning weights.

This year we made a few changes to base prices for dierent bulls. Along with the current record-high price market, our need for a few more bulls on the ground this year has led us to price some animals higher, due to our desire to possibly retain them within our program. However, we are happy to sell them if we can get what we feel they are worth. Furthermore, there are a few bulls premiered without a price (382 - 1A Red Angus and L04 - PB Simmental). These bulls have been standouts since birth, and due to their genetic potential and phenotype, we are not putting a price on them. However, we would be open to negotiation on outright or part-interest purchase to any parties interested. If someone is interested and would like to visit about these 2 bulls (382 & L04) please reach out for more details.

The D115 cow has been a leader in our fall herd for several years in fertility, udder & foot quality and disposition. 382’s foot quality is sure to improve feet on his progeny.

BCLR MISS AMBITION G916, a flush-mate sibling to L04 and one of the leading donors at Bichler Simmentals in North Dakota.

Red Angus Guide to EPDS and Indexes

ProS ... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value).

HB ..... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value).

GM..... GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the postweaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value).

CED Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. (Percent/High Value)

BW Birth Weight predicts differences in actual birth weight of progeny. (Pounds/Low Value)

WW Weaning Weight predicts differences in 205-day weaning weight. (Pounds/High Value)

YW ........ Yearling Weight predicts differences in 365-day yearling weight. (Pounds/High Value)

ADG ....... Average Daily Gain predicts differences in weight gain between 205 and 365 days of age. (Pounds/High Value)

DMI ....... Dry Matter Intake predicts differences in daily feed intake as measured in a feedlot during the post-weaning period. (Pounds/Low Value)

MILK Milk predicts differences in weaning weight attributed to the milking ability of the animal’s daughters. (Pounds/High Value)

ME Maintenance Energy predicts the difference in maintence energy requirements. (Mcal per Month/Low Value)

HPG Heifer Pregnancy predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to conceive and calve at 2 years of age following exposure to breeding. (Percent/High Value)

CEM Calving Ease Maternal predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to calve unassisted as 2-year-old heifers. (Percent/High Value)

STAY Stayability predicts differences in the ability of an animals’ retained daughters to remain productive in the herd – calve every year – through 6 years of age. (Percent/High Value)

MARB Marbling predicts differences in marbling score – amount of intramuscular fat measured at the 13th rib. (Marbling Score Units/High Value)

YG Yield Grade predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade, which is calculated using CW, REA and Fat. (Yield Grade Units/Low Value)

CW ........ Carcass Weight predicts differences in actual hot carcass weight. (Pounds/High Value)

REA ....... Ribeye Area predicts differences in square inches of ribeye area measured at the 13th rib.(Square Inches/High Value)

FAT ........ Fat predicts differences in the depth of backfat measured between the 12th and 13th ribs. (Inches/Low Value)
