City View Simmentals & Ivanhoe Angus 4th Annual Bull Sale with Guest Consignor

Wascana Herefords

Tuesday, March 18, 2014 1:00 pm Johnstone Auction Mart Moose Jaw, SK

A sincere welcome to you from City View Simmentals! Our fourth annual sale would not be possible if it were not for the support of you, our customers, who come back year after year and tell their neighbors where their new bull came from. The old saying ‘our success is yours’ couldn’t be more true. We are proud to have you believe in our program as you make important breeding decisions for yours. We are excited to be back with Ron and Marilyn Mountenay of Ivanhoe Angus and their family. We are also happy to welcome back Wascana Herefords, the Duke Family. Like you, we believe strongly in bull development. We believe strongly in feeding bulls with longevity in mind on a high forage diet and so, our bulls always have a full hay feeder. We continue to use our own grain along with a bull development pellet. We believe in having natural growth and performance bred into bulls rather than fed into them. As always, the bulls are organized in the catalogue by sire groups. Buying multiple bulls to run together is made easier through groups of half and ¾ brothers. As you will notice in pedigrees, many of the bulls are mothered by City View cows, something that is very important to us. If we can be of any assistance prior to the sale, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We welcome you to the farm anytime. Come for a visit and see the bulls. You can also see them out at Johnstone’s starting March 16. Come early and enjoy our hospitality!

Check out our website www.cityviewsimmentals.com or look for us on Facebook for year round updates and information.

Ron and I are very pleased to welcome you to the 4th Annual City View Simmentals and Ivanhoe Angus Sale with Guest Consignor Wascana Polled Herefords. We truly enjoy being in the purebred cattle business. The old saying that business is only as good as the people that you are involved with is a very true statement. All the people we work with from our family, the Barnett and Duke families, everyone at Johnstones, and of course our customers and neighbors make this saying very true. We truly appreciate your interest in our cattle and thank you for your support. This past summer our five year old granddaughter, Cacey, and I were watching a program on developing farms and livestock in third world countries. I was explaining to Cacey how these people are being taught to develop farms so they can raise money to help their families and their country. Cacey solved the problem with, “If they save their money and buy a good black bull they will make money. Isn’t that right, Grandma?” Both the yearling and two-‐year old bulls are being developed on a ration from Nutrena. Due to the younger age of the yearlings, we would be pleased to bring them home and continue to develop them. The bulls will be vet inspected prior to the sale and the two-‐ year old bulls will be semen tested. This year’s offering of both bulls and females are very uniform and developing well. Please stop by the farm to view the cattle. We would be pleased to show our herd. We hope to see on March 18 at Johnstone’s. Come early, view the bulls and females, and join us for lunch.

The spot of lead off bull is always a big discussion when it comes time to print the catalogue. This year may have had more debate than others but in the end, City View Andretti 305A won the challenge. This is quite a bull. He is so clean in his lines, really well put together, and carries a real presence about him. He offers a really balanced profile if you look at the numbers including really moderate birth values. Perhaps the thing we like most about him: his daddy! Xcel 33X is a bull we raised to replace his sire, Ishee, who we lost too soon. The bottom side of Xcel’s pedigree is the great Boss Lady family that has become the backbone of our program. Maternal power is in his blood. Now working for Lee and Cindy Petersen, these sons are a good example of what we knew he would do. This is an exciting first for us.... our lead off sire group from a bull we raised! A proud day for sure!

City View Arsenal 318A is easy to like and put up quite a fight when it came to being the lead off bull in the catalogue. Just like his brother, lot 45, Arsenal is modestly made with a sweeping rib and big quarter. His mother, Lucky Me 20N, has done it again! This is the sixth natural son in as many years to sell from this cow, all selling to astute producers. Few cows in any breed can boast that effort. 318A is in the top 30% of the breed for yearling weight and the top 20% for weaning weight. It’s really no wonder when you consider the powerful females backing this bull. The top side of the pedigree is our Boss Lady family and the bottom is the 817B family. These 2 groups have become the focal point of our cowherd and Arsenal 318A combines the best of them both. He does have a scur. This is a bull to buy with confidence!

Absolute 311A is the bull we chose to represent our blacks on the show road. He spent the fall in Alberta with good friends where neighbors were stopping on the road to ask, “What is that black bull?!” If you have a group of British bred females, Absolute will absolutely add the stretch and frame you might like. He is longer than a freight train and packs a real punch. His performance and carcass values rank him in the top 15% of the breed. His mother is a truly elite young female we are very excited about who is pictured on our website. Absolute is the full package!

Aftershock 313A is a really good Club King son who is a 3/4 brother to the lot 57 bull. His mother is a beautiful young cow who is very maternal and super clean in her design. 313A would work well on heifers with his flat shoulder, length of spine and exceptional birth weight and calving ease values. A couple years ago we decided to use gender specific semen on our black cows from Club King because we were so impressed with the muscle shape and bone he left in his bull calves. He offers sky high performance values for weaning and yearling but also calves really well. Feel the wave of Aftershock!

City View Argo 342A is destined to be a great breeding bull. His dam could arguably be one of our greatest. Argo is the third son in 3 years to sell from 3M who at 11 years of age is as youthful as ever. We first heard about Top Fuel at Camrose Bull Congress a couple of years ago. After seeing his curve bending EPD values and overall balance and phenotype, we knew we had to have a piece of him in our herd. It took some work but we managed to secure 25 doses. He ranks in the top 2% of the breed for weaning and yearling values with similar carcass qualities. His first calf crop left us with 9 stand-‐out heifer calves and the lone bull, Argo 342A. Top Fuel is flat awesome and the calves are proof to that! Argo 324A may be the carcass and performance bull of the sale but then again he may be the maternal powerhouse of the sale. Long story short...Argo can do it all.

Acadia 348A or ‘Stitch’ as he was called all summer and fall on the show road, is quite a bull. Super disposition, rock solid pedigree, maternal powerhouse mother, good hair, and marked right are just a few of the ways we describe him. Needless to say, we like ‘Stitch’ a lot! Americano 327A is quite a calf. Every bit the bull his brother is in lot 61, he too has much to offer. His mother did a lot of great things for us, consistently weaning off one of the heaviest calves of the year. The maternal weaning and milk values are not typos. 327A is a breed trait leader for those being in the top 1%. Whether you want to keep awesome replacement females or raise soggy beef steers, Americano is just the brew for you.

City View Alibi 321A is a heifer bull supreme! We called him ‘Peanut’ when he was born at just 66 pounds out of a first calf heifer. EPD users... do they make calving ease values higher than the Winchester bull? Alibi himself is in the top 1% of the breed for calving ease and birth weight but also offers some very cool carcass data. His mother is a female we expect big things from moving forward. She comes from a long line of great females like Kora 29K (dam of lot 54), Princess 3M (dam of lot 61) and Alibi’s grandmother, Wife Material, who was in our show string as a heifer calf. We aren’t lying...we have an Alibi.
