City View Simmentals & Ivanhoe Angus 6th Annual Bull Sale with Guest Consignors Wascana Herefords & Sunnyside Simmentals
Tuesday, March 22, 2016 1:00 pm Johnstone Auction Mart Moose Jaw, SK
Welcome to our 6th Annual Sale! With the support of our customers and our family and friends, we continue to be passionate about this work. The purebred industry is not for the faint of heart but we are continually motivated by your support to supply an ever-improving product. We are excited to continue working with Ron and Marilyn Mountenay of Ivanhoe Angus. We have always said what a pleasure it is to work with people who are so similar to us in their ideas of good cattle. Wascana Herefords, the Duke Family, and Tom and Sharon Turnbull of Sunnyside Simmentals are also back with us rounding out a very strong offering of herd bull prospects. New this year are a couple groups of top quality replacement heifers. We have toyed with this idea and have decided to give it a shot. We have personally selected the heifers and believe strongly they’d be a great addition to any program. We feed bulls with longevity in mind on a high forage diet. We continue to use our own grain along with a bull development pellet from Co-op Feeds. We have always taken pride in presenting our bulls to you in their working gear. You will notice our weaning weights maybe lower than other herds. We do not introduce grain until close to weaning so the weaning weights you see here are weights off the cow. As you will notice in pedigrees, many of the bulls are mothered by City View cows, something we take great pride in. If we can be of any assistance prior to the sale, please give us a call. We welcome you to the farm anytime; Come for a visit and see the bulls. You can also see them at Johnstone’s starting March 20. Come early and enjoy our hospitality! Check out our website www.cityviewsimmentals.com for videos of the bulls or look for us on Facebook for year round updates. The Barnett Family
Welcome to the 6th Annual City View Simmentals and Ivanhoe Angus Sale with Guest Consignors Wascana Polled Herefords and Sunnyside Simmentals. It is with both pride and pleasure that Ivanhoe Angus is part of this sale group. We are truly blessed to have a wonderful family and can enjoy our life working and living on Ivanhoe Farm. A sincere thank you to our customers! We appreciate your support and interest in our breeding program. We would also like to thank of the people who are involved in this sale. We appreciate each and everyone who helps. This past summer we truly saw the value of our Angus cowherd. Many weeks with no rain saw the cows maintain themselves with lots of milk for the calves. We did not creep feed; the calves are raised by their mothers and nature. Again this year both the yearling and two-year old bulls are being developed on a Nutrena ration. The two year old bulls were summered on pasture. The yearling bulls will be vet inspected prior to the sale and the two-year old bulls will be semen tested. Due to the younger age of the yearlings, they can return to the farm where we will continue to develop them. They will be semen tested and delivered in the spring. Ron and I are pleased and excited about our offering of bulls for this year’s sale. They are a very uniform group with breed character and are structurally correct. We are also pleased to be consigning 8 sweet, feminine replacement heifers to the sale. They heifers are also developed on a Nutrena ration and will be vet inspected and pasture ready. These heifers have been selected from solid cow families that have lots of fertility and longevity. Thanks again for all your support of the Ivanhoe program. We welcome you to come to the farm and view our herd. Please accept this as our invitation to join us on March 22 at Johnstone’s. Come early, view the cattle and join us for lunch. This is the first set of sons to sell from one of our newest herdsires, Boundary Stubby 129A. He saw extensive use as a yearling, largely because of the cow family he stems from. The Sarah cows play a major role at Boundary Ranch and at Kimlake prior to their dispersal. 129A is out of two black parents, making him a non-diluter and he is homozygous polled. We acquired 129A to add additional power and muscle mass to our red cattle and he did just that for us. When these calves hit the ground, you could see the extra shape and dimension right away. His first daughters look outstanding and will be ones to watch down the road.

Mr Ishee Unique Maternal Grandsire to many lots.
The lead off spot in the catalogue is always a big discussion for us. Reds vs blacks, AI vs herd bulls. This year we decided to lead off with the 129A sons because we are just so proud of this group. City View Castaway 529C has been a contender among his counter parts from the get-go. He is tremendously long sided and very smooth made but has a real herd bull look about him. His dam is a really functional, tidy made female who stems from the Boss Lady family. She quietly goes about her business and always produces a good one. She had a full brother to Castaway just as we were finishing up with pictures. Another son sold in last year’s sale to Meyers Simmentals and we have 2 daughters in production. Castaway is going to be much like his mother in the way he goes about his business…Hard working and dependable.

City View Camaro has been a favourite of ours from day one and he’s only gotten better. Typical of the 129A sons, he’s very long bodied with great muscle pattern. We chose him and lot 3 to represent this sire group in our show string last fall. He was a part of our pen of 3 in Medicine Hat which got called back to the final round. His mother is an absolute tank of a cow! She is truly wider than she is tall, perfectly uddered and the type of female to build a program around. She’s also the grand dam of lot 3 and the heifer we sold last fall to Jetstream Livestock in Ontario. We know many people will find Camaro on sale day and before. Like his name, he’s sleek and can get you places in a hurry! Paternal sister to lots 1-10 Sold to Jetstream Livestock

Here he is! The 2015 Reserve Supreme Champion All Other Breeds bull from the NILE in Billings, Mt! City View Customized 555C is a super moderate, extremely stout, hairy rascal with a ton of character. It was really interesting for us having him on display south of the border where he was extremely admired. Most people could not believe he was purebred Simmental because of the softness of his gut and his overall muscle shape. He may be the most unique of the 129A’s in terms of type; definitely the most moderate but also the cleanest fronted. His dam is a sister to lot 2 and patterns very much like their mother, 29W (pictured with lot 2). She has an absolutely ideal udder, typical of all 838 daughters. Customized is a bull we really rank highly and one we are confident has a bright future. NILE Reserve Supreme Champion

Dam of lot 4 Picture day is always fun when you get a great picture of an outstanding bull. Choke Hold 534C is another really soft made 129A son who patterns much like his brothers. He maybe reminds us most of 129A when we bought him with his big sweeping rib design and massive hip. His dam has raised two other sons working for Brad & Tammy Evans and Rick & Bonnie Clubbe. She’s another member of the Boss Lady cow family. If you’ve followed our program at all, you know how much we love our Boss Lady females. They are unbelievably consistent and often produce way beyond themselves. Choke Hold will be a top choice for many very astute cattle producers come sale day.

Dam of lot 6 Champion 553C is a tremendously long sided 129A son who is maybe the cleanest made of the group. He is super correct in his structure as are all the 129A’s. He has a moderate birthweight and stems from a same cow family as lots 2 and 3. The Nordica cow family began with a blood red, goggle eyed fullblood cow who characterized the capacity shown in her descendants. His maternal grandsire is Winchester who ranks in the top 1% of the breed for calving ease. Note the top 15% ranking for the same trait that Champion 553C has. Length of spine adds pounds but does not detract from ease of birth.

A really nice strip blaze face physically describes Caddyshack 556C but he’s much more than that. So softy constructed and big middled, his dam is one who often gets noticed on pasture tours. She goes back to the old 817B cow family and her own mother was one of our all time favourites. We believe Caddyshack is going to be super impressive as a mature bull.

Camelot 559C defines correctness in terms of structure. We love the way he carries his head and how he blends from shoulder into forerib. His dam has a textbook udder, has 2 daughters in the herd and comes from the same cow family as lot 10. Lots 8 and 10 are extremely similar in type and would be an interesting pair to run together.

Chief 573C is one of the younger bulls in our offering and another of the really honest, functional 129A sons. We love the hind leg structure on this guy. He’s super correct in his movement and lines. His mother is a hardworking fullblood cow who has a daughter in the herd and another son at Kress Livestock of Odessa, SK. There’s lots of maternal power in this pedigree.
Chief 573C is the youngest bull in our offering but certainly is not lacking when it comes to usefulness and performance. With just a 90 pound birthweight, he’s very cleanly designed. His mother is a moderately made 838 cow with plenty of longevity. His maternal granddam produced until 14 including several sale bulls and a sister to the dam is still going strong at 12.

Sire of lot 13 Cabaret was an in dam purchase so he represents an outcross pedigree for us. His sire, Red Force, is a well known calving ease sire and Cabaret himself ranks in the top 4% of the breed for calving ease. He is so smooth shouldered and long sided with an ideal skull shape for calving ease. Our Jet Run bull is also a son of Red Force. We appreciate the milk EPD of 27 which is quite high for red or black cattle. Cabaret has just a spot of white on his forehead and will be an impressive walking mature bull.

Conquest 558C is a definite calving ease prospect. He was purchased in dam from Czech-Mate Livestock. Aaron and I were at their fall sale and came across the broodiest, heaviest boned, stoutest made female we’d seen in a while. The best part…she was a bargain because she was horned. Conquest’s sire is a well proven calving ease sire who often left black markings on his progeny like you see on Conquest. Here’s one we like a lot and he just keeps getting better.

No doubt when you follow the pedigree back and find some of our all time greats like Kora 29K and Princess 3M. These were rock solid females that always did an amazing job for us! Centre Ice is the type of bull you’d want to raise a pen of steers from and hope they’re carbon copies of their daddy. Centre Ice comes from the same cow family as lot 21.

The final Jet Run son and almost a March baby. Combat is dark red and very long sided. His dam is a two year old and one of three daughters we’ve kept from Umber 28U. We love the pedigree on Combat; Jet Run, 838, Top Gun, Bombshell…all bulls that have done a great job for us. Then add the Boss Lady cow family and you’ve got a who’s who pedigree. His daughters should be pretty awesome females.

Cinch 532C is the only Boondock son in the offering this year but he's a good one. Like all the Boondocks, he’s really soft haired, round hipped and clean fronted. The first sons were a big a hit last year, averaging $7600. The very first Boondocks daughters calved this winter and they far exceed our expectations. They’ve got model udders and lots of softness about them. Cinch is the 5th consecutive son of Whirlwind 21W to go through our sale. Al Shooter, Cam & Colleen Campbell, Mathew Stevens and Robert Petek have already acquired her genetics. It’s safe to say she’s a cow we love! You should see the snappy blazed face bull she's got this year! Her only remaining mission is to leave us a daughter.

This is the second calf crop from Broker and we are continually impressed by the job this powerhouse herdsire does. His first sons were well received last year, averaging $6900. We have never used a bull as long bodied as this guy is and we love the extension he provides from the shoulder forward. He has done exactly what we’d hoped he’d do by increasing the frame size of our females just slightly but he’s also added a ton of raw power. There are a lot of Broker cattle around but this guy has one of the highest milk numbers of any we’ve seen. This is largely thanks to his beautiful Black Joker dam.

Carbon is a really solid, all around type of bull we displayed in Medicine Hat at the pen show. Like all the Broker’s, he is really long sided and big hipped. A maternal brother sold to the McLaren’s and we have several daughters from 132T including the granddam of lot 18. These black cattle with white characteristics are growing in demand and bulls like Carbon are right for the times.

Here’s a bull that has already been noticed by anyone through the pen. Cannon is as dark a red as we can make one with a perfect money strip right down the middle of his face. Out of two black parents, he is a non-dilutor and has big time swagger! Cannon struts while on the move just like a powerful breeding bull should. His dam is a natural daughter of our black flush matron, 127T, and closely follows in her mothers footsteps in terms of type and kind. The maternal grandsire is a bull we raised and walked briefly who went back to the Boss Lady family. A maternal brother sold last year to Yuke Family Farms. Cannon will make a big bang!

Maternal Sister Sold to Smithers Land & Cattle Close Shave was a member of our final round pen of bulls in Medicine Hat. He was the #2 ranking bull for weaning and yearling values and sits above breed average in 8 EPD traits. Many will tell you his dam is the most complete female on the farm. She is phenotypically flawless! Her flush to Boondock yielded tremendous success and her natural offspring are consistently at the top of the pen. Take a look at lot 22 and notice the dam is a daughter of 127T. Brothers to Close Shave have previously sold to Glendale Farm, Shiloh Cattle Co, and Randy & Janice Stevens. When you combine the maternal prowess of 127T with the sheer power of Broker, the outcome was set to be crazy good! Close Shave is just that!

Dam of lot 24
Maternal brother Sold to Beryl and Wendell Campbell Cobalt is a big favourite here and a member of our show team. He stood second in class at Agribition and was a member of our final round pen of bulls in Medicine Hat. He has been consistently admired by cattlemen from all breeds for his mass, style, shape, and demeanour. His dam is a stunning female from the same cow family as lots 8, 10 and 17. Her first son sold to Glen Ritter and last year she sold another to Beryl & Wendell Campbell. If you have any concern about the birth weight on Cobalt, please consider this. He is absolutely the longest bull in our offering; Length adds pounds but has little impact on calving ease. In her first 3 calves, the dam has produced an average birth weight of 90 pounds. We would use him with absolute confidence on mature cows then sit back and reap the rewards of what maybe your most impressive calf crop to date. We are unbelievably confident that Cobalt is going to have a major impact on his wise new owner’s breeding program.

We anticipate a bright future ahead of her when you consider that she’s produced 2 big time herd bulls in her first two attempts. She had another son who sold last year to the Matt Stevens. He is arguably the longest bodied bull in the whole set and is sure to add pounds to his offspring. His mother is a real honest, fault free kind of cow from the Boss Lady family and his grand dam, City View Watch Me 2W, is also the dam of the lot 1 bull. Ample power and lots of good in this guy! Cardinal 546C is the very first bull Brody and Addison have offered for sale and he is a real fancy standout! Blaze, as the kids call him, is an outcross pedigree on the bottom side for us as his dam was purchased at Agribition from the Academy Hill program in Ontario. Cardinal is her second calf, her first was a heifer who just calved and has a perfect udder. True to his mother, Cardinal is not a big framed bull. She might weigh 1200 pounds if she’s eaten all morning before going across the scale and she has the best disposition on the farm. She’s been ridden by a five year old in the pasture! Cardinal has a real ‘clubby’ look about him and has lots of hair. We feel he’d work well in the heifer pen with just a 68 pound birthweight but also sire calves with great shape and muscle pattern. Calving ease and tidiness on the dam’s side and power on the sire’s side…a great combination!

Cadillac 557C is flat good! We used him in our ad campaign and he's been admired by anyone who has seen him. He is a massively designed, huge middled, belly dragging, beef bull! We couldn’t write the bottom side of this pedigree in better. Boss Lady and 817B in one package make Cadillac’s dam one to watch not to mention that she is phenotypical flawless - an absolute tank, beautifully uddered and highly maternal. If this pedigree weren’t up and down our cowherd, this would likely be the bull seeing duties at our place. No matter the dollar value - a wise investment is always a Cadillac!

Lots 29 and 30 are 3/4 brothers and absolute power bulls! We have begun to acquire some of “Uncle Tom” and Sharon’s cows from the Sunnyside program and these 2 are some of the first results. The Double Bar D Tanker bull has worked really well in Tom’s herd as has the Riot bull on the bottom side of the pedigree. Crash 520C and Charge 580C are very similarly made; Long bodied, lots of rib and capacity. Both dams are very heavy milking females as evidenced in the milk EPD’s on these guys. This is a pair that would run really well together or choose between them and make a wicked pen of feedlot cattle. The carcass data on these fellas is pretty great…both are in the top 2% of the breed for ribeye area. No meat eater has ever complained about their steak being too big!

Welcome to the 2016 Bull sale. Thank you to City View Simmental and Ivanhoe Angus for allowing us to be a part of the sale once again. This year we have 18 polled and 4 horned Hereford two year old bulls. All bulls are halter broke and ready for pastures. The bulls are selected from top sires and proven dams. These bulls are thick, deep and long, sure to add pounds to your calves. We are very pleased to be involved with the two-time Agribition Grand Champion polled Hereford bull ‘Delta 69A’ with Wilson’s Polled Herefords, Arcola. Special thanks to ANL Herefords, Lampman, and Manle Herefords, Moosomin, for purchasing our 2013 and 2014 bred heifer replacement groups. We look forward to seeing you on sale day and encourage you to contact Harvey or myself with any questions you might have. Thank You, Bradley and Harvey Duke

Brody’s mother is also one of our top cows. Good uddered, loads of milk and easy fleshing. He is long, smooth, and like his brothers, a very gentle disposition.

Mandate’s mother is a massive cow, deep bodied, good uttered and heavy milking. He is hard muscled and is going to be a big, stout, powerful bull that will give his calves heavy weaning weights. He has a full brother in this year’s yearling pen.

Emma’s Boy’s mother is one of our smaller framed cows who is very maternal and has a ton of milk. She brings in a calf each fall nearly as big as she is. He is very complete, balanced, and will be a great bull to use if you want to lower birth weights or use on a pasture of heifers this summer.

Neil Young’s mother is a wonderful young female , in the top of our herd. He has always been a favourite of mine. Low birthweight, well balanced, and the best genetics in the Hereford breed are represented here. He had an accident and has a short tail however, if you can look past this you will own a very good bull. His calves are guaranteed to have tails.

EPD 101
Buying your next herdsire is a complicated process; Studying genetic profiles, analyzing performance data, and working through scientific values is a huge task. We found these explanations of EPD values very straight forward and helpful. EPD’s cannot be compared from breed to breed. Calving Ease (CE) - The ease with which a bull’s calves are born to first calf heifers. The larger EPD indicates a higher percentage of unassisted births for calves sired by that bull. Birth Weight (BW) - Calf weight at birth adjusted to the dam’s age. The larger EPD indicates a heavier average birth weight. Weaning Weight (WW) - Calf weight taken between 160 and 250 days of age and adjusted to 205 days of age and to the dam’s age. The larger EPD indicates a heavier average weaning weight for calves sired by that bull. Yearling Weight (YW) - Weight taken between 330 and 440 days of age and adjusted to 365 days of age and to the dam’s age. The larger EPD indicates a heavier average yearling weight for calves sired by that bull. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) - The ease at which a bull’s daughters calve as first calf heifers. The larger EPD indicates a higher percentage of unassisted births for calves born to the sire’s daughters. Milk - The milk EPD is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk as expressed in his daughters, or in other words, the part of weaning weight attributed to milk genes. The larger EPD indicates heavier average weaning weights due to daughter’s greater maternal ability. Total Maternal (TM) - A bull’s ability to pass on milk production and growth rate through his daughters. It predicts the total weaning (direct and maternal) that will be displayed in his daughter’s offspring. It is calculated by adding half of the Weaning Weight EPD with the Milk EPD. The larger EPD indicates higher pounds at weaning.
