NEW THIS YEAR

*VIDEO SALE*

WELCOME... Welcome to Amigo XVII Never a dull moment in the cattle business. Producers have welcomed the steady price increase in all classes of cattle for the past two years. It's a long overdue trend we need badly, to create sustainability and herd growth for our industry. As a business that is never without challenges, the spring and summer of 2015 has been no different. Late frosts and early dry conditions have created a forage shortfall in nearly all of SE Alberta and SW Saskatchewan. It will be a year of finding alternative ways and sources of feed to get the cow herd through this upcoming winter. But, for most cattlemen in this business, this is nothing new. We are a tough and resourceful bunch and this challenge too will be met. The job of improving our seedstock genetics is never done. Both Pahl Livestock and XTC Ranches make this a year round priority. This pays double dividends as we work to offer better bulls for our customers as well as improve our own commercial herds through the use of our own bulls. We are totally focused on sound, practical cattle for commercial ranchers. Our 17th annual sale will offer some great young bulls, the newest and best genetics we have. Please feel free to call and discuss your bull requirements and questions. We look forward to visiting with you! Pahl Livestock & XTC Ranches

LONG YEARLINGS ADVANTAGES TO PURCHASING FALL BULLS There are many ways, ages and varying conditions available to obtain your bull requirements. Having experienced most of these different options both as buyer and seller, I have noticed several things. Bulls sold as fall long yearlings, tend to be pushed less to get there. They have usually spent more time on forage based rations and grazing. If not headed to a spring sale they don't require the extra winter grain needed to get them into sale shape. It's just a more natural way for bulls to develop without an unnecessary push for growth. We have had excellent luck with our fall sold long yearlings working in large commercial pastures. They hold up well, acclimatize easier and require less attention than yearling bulls going into the next winter. With more time to adjust to their new setting, they fit in easier with your existing bull battery. These bulls are raised in large pastures and run on grass for the summer. Have confidence that you are buying bulls from an outfit that demands as much from their cattle as you do of yours. We believe fall long yearling bulls offer great value in early selection, as well as longer years of service.

LONG YEARLINGS This Sensation son is a first calf out of a great young cow here on the ranch. He is sure to get your attention with his unique markings and style. We used 12B on our purebred heifers this year, but we feel he has enough performance to use on the cows as well. Above breed average EPD's on all performance, maternal and carcass traits, yet still has a low 1.3 birth wt. number.

12B KLEI 5Z Dam to 12B

This good performing 955w son was our pick to use on heifers this spring. His 3z dam comes from a great line of maternal cattle, and 969w cow is a tremendous producer, definately on our list to flush soon. The popular 955w sire has been widely used across North America, and is now a trait leader in 8 categories of the CHA sire summary. Combining calving ease with great performance and maternal characteristics makes 14 B a real curve bender bull.

“Pinnacle Ladd” is a easy fleshing polled bull out of a outstanding cow purchased from McCoy Cattle Company. 3U is arguably our easiest fleshing cow on the ranch, and she produces a good one every year. 33B is moderate in size and is sure to produce the same kind of easy doing cattle. Would work on cows or the heifers.

This Anchor bull is full of power and performance. 133T is a very top end cow on the ranch that has impressive depth of body and a great udder. She has raised bulls that have sold to Standoff Colony and Drowning Ford Grazing. This bull speaks for himself and is sure to catch your eye. Lots of performance and a carcass improver.

Raising Bulls at Pahl Livestock Bulls here are raised strictly with natural growth and longevity in mind. Lots of bulls are feed in large pens but ours are fed in an approximately 50 acre pen with the feed and the water as far apart as they can be. Forcing the bulls to walk miles a day. They are fed a textured grain ration designed for skeletal growth and development, as well as a custom mineral to help with fertility, and free choice dry hay. The whole sale group is fed in one pen letting the better bulls rise to the top. Bulls are then sorted and the bottom is culled after each weigh date and again in September before the sale for temperament. There are no Angus bulls sold from this pen before the sale. Three or four Hereford bulls are sorted off and are offered at the Medicine Hat spring sale are sorted out. These bulls are raised to be sound and guaranteed breeders. 24

EPD FACTS EPDs are values that predict how the future progeny of an animal will perform relative to the progeny of other animals in the same breed. They are expressed in the units of that particular trait. For example, weaning weight is measured in pounds thus the Weaning Weight EPD is expressed in pounds. Another way to look at it is EPDs measure an animal’s value as a parent. EPDs are based on pedigree information and performance data such as weight information and are then compared to other animals within a contemporary group. The different traits are adjusted to a standard age to ensure that all animals are equal when they are compared. The traits are adjusted as follows:

GROWTH

MATERNAL

Calving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to firstcalf heifers.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size comparted to that of other sires.

Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

CARCASS The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass weight, marbling score, Ribeye area and fat thickness. The units of measure are in carcass trait format and analyzed on an age-constant basis. Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

A note to remember, EPDs evaluate group average and offspring’s performance. They cannot predict individual performance or weights. Another important aspect to consider when selecting animals based on their EPDs is the accuracy of those EPDs. The accuracy represents the reliability of the EPD against the true breeding value. Accuracies are reported as a percentage value. High accuracy values (greater than 0.80) mean the EPD is closer to the true breeding value than an EPD value with lower accuracy(less than 0.20) have a much greater chance of changing as more information becomes available than an animal with a high accuracy EPD. Although EPDs for low accuracy animals can be considered unreliable relative to higher accuracy EPDs, they are still the best objective measure of an animal’s genetic merit. EPDs are useful tools when planning breeding programs. Attention should be paid to the heritability and correlations to the traits a breeder wants to improve upon within the herd. Some traits are more heritable than others resulting in faster progress being made in comparison to other less heritable traits. Also, many traits are correlated, wherein the trait is affected by the expression of several other traits. It is important to be aware of such logistics when developing selection criteria in a breeding program. 25

VALUE OF GENOMIC ENHANCED (GE)-EPDS The added value of selecting young sire prospects based on GE-EPDs powered by HD 50K as compared to pedigree EPDs comes from fewer and less costly selection mistakes. This occurs because with pedigree EPDs, true genetic merit and performance of progeny more frequently turn out to be lower than initially predicted. Pfizer researchers recently estimated the economic liability of such selection mistakes, through use of actuary principles applied to the possible change values associated with improvements in accuracy from HD 50K. Outside of cattle breeding, these same principles are applied to specific risk factors used to compute items such as insurance premiums and the cost of extended warranties. While the EPDs of untested animals have greater financial liability, conversely, GE-EPDs from HD 50K tested animals possess added economic advantage due to less potential for possible change and the possibility of disappointing progeny performance. Genomic correlations and progeny equivalents for marker panels by Zoetis for Black Angus in North America. Trait

The table to the right indicates the increase in accuracy you can expect from the genomic marker panels available through the Canadian Angus Association. Each panel explains a different amount of variation for each trait. The best panel will depend on which traits are most important to each member.

These improvements in accuracy are only seen in EDPs with low accuracies Once an animal has progeny on the ground, and are proven, they are higher accuracy EPDs and the genomic marker panels have less impact on the accuracy of their EPDs. The graph below quantifies the amount of increase in accuracy that can be expected from genomic marker panels for traits that are 40% heritable. Most economically relevant traits in beef have heritability of 40% or less.

EDP Accuracy

Sire Selection It would be easier if we could assume that the highest EPDs are the best. Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple. Like most decisions, using EPDs for sire selection involves tradeoffs. For example, bulls with high growth EPDs may sire calves with a higher birth weight as well. And there may be other impacts on your operation to consider. For example, when breeding heifers it is desirable to produce calves with lower birth weights, so a breeder may want to pay special attention to birth weight EPDs of prospective bulls. If all calves were sold as feeders, the milk EPD would generally not rate much attention. Yearling weight will be important if you want to ensure finished steers in the appropriate weight range. It should also be kept in mind that reaction to selection can differ from trait to trait. This is because some traits have higher heritability than others, and are more easily passed to offspring. For instance growth traits such as weaning weight respond faster to selection, than reproductive traits such as age at first calving. A balance of traits is required, and the perfect balance for you will depend on your climate, nutritional and economic environment, as well as the management goals you have set for your herd.

Trait Calving Ease Direct Calving Ease Maternal Birth Weight Weaning Weight Yearling Weight Average Daily Gain (Post Weaning) Milk Marbling Rib Eye Area Fat Carcass Weight Dry Matter Feed Intake Residual Feed Intake Tenderness Docility Yearling Height Scotal Circumference Mature Weight Mature Height Heifer Pregnancy

For the Zoetis HD 50K for Angus

Zoetis Score 1-100 1 = more unassisted 1= more unassisted 1 = lighter 1= heavier 1 = heavier 1 = heavier 1 = more milk 1 = more marbled 1 = bigger 1 = less back fat 1 = heavier carcass 1 = eats less 1 = lower feed / lb 1 = more tender 1 = more docile 1 = more hip height 1 = larger 1 = heavier 1 = more height n/a

percentile rankings, a lower value indicates a more favorable ranking for the trait. For example, a smaller numeric percentile ranking for Zoetis result in birth weight and carcass fat indicates lighter calves and leaner carcasses as the expectation. If you are making selection decisions for traits that have an EPD provided by the Association, then the EPDs should be considered the selection tool of choice. The EPD and accuracy account for all sources of information available on the animal of interest (e.g., pedigree, own record, weights/measures, genomic results). Using EPD and genomic percentiles separately leads to double counting information and will lessen selection efficiency. 29

A full brother was a feature bull in last year's sale going to LC Ranch. A 110 Index at weaning and 119 on feed, it doesn't get much better.
