BIRTH WEIGHT & CALVING EASE University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. 2. 3. 4.
The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progreny. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease. 5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation. 6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. 7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease. Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer – what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 or 70 mph, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lb may actually be 80-90 lb. Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer bodied calf with weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weight 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb cow should give birth to a 96 lb calf with ease. 2
Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.
Welcome Everyone to our 9th Annual Bull Sale! On behalf of our families I would like to thank everyone that bid, bought or showed interest in last year’s sale. It was a great day with many new and repeat customers filling the auction barn and taking home a great set of bulls. 2019 gave us all our fair share of challenges from major weather swings that created feed shortages to market issues that put pressure on cattle prices. Through all of this Charolais cross cattle have proven their worth by being able to gain and maintain condition on limited resources and still be market toppers in nearly every sales barn across the land. If you haven’t used a Charolais bull before there is no better time to start. This year’s line up is loaded with bulls that can be confidently used in the heifer pen and will still add performance to any cow herd while keeping maternal strength in mind. There are a handful of fall born long yearlings that have the extra age and size to cover a few more cows. No matter your breeding needs we will have a bull to fill them! As in the past the bulls are on free choice 1st cut baleage and limit fed a pelleted ration. The bulls have plenty of room to get the exercise they need to stay fit and athletic. All bulls are on the Bovi-shield Gold Vaccination program and will have had their Blackleg booster prior to the sale. The cow herds are also on a full live vaccine program which helps to ensure long term protection. All bulls will have a breeding soundness evaluation and will ONLY be sold once they have passed. This ensures that you get a bull that is guaranteed to get cows bred. We stand behind each and every one of them and if you have a problem with a bull please call us first! Everyone is invited to come to our respective farms to view the bulls prior to the sale in their everyday environment and to see their mothers as well. They were pictured in early January and will change a lot from then until sale day. Once again the sale will be broadcast on Liveauctions. TV giving you the opportunity to watch and bid from the comfort of home. If you have any questions about this service or the bulls please do not hesitate to call/text or email. Nobody knows the bulls like we do and we’d be happy to discuss your needs and find a bull to suit.
Keith and Karen & Family
We look forward to seeing everyone on March 14th in Cobden. Even if you don’t need a bull this year please join us for lunch and some great hospitality! Sincerely, Keith & Karen Kurtis & Chelsea Kirby & Arlene
