All bulls have undergone a complete semen and reproductive examination. They sell as guaranteed breeders. In accordance with the CAA breeders guarantee. Freight on the replacement bull is the responsibility of the buyer. All bulls returned to Bone Creek Ranch for credit must be in good condition. We recommend the buyer consider buying insurance on their purchase. All warranty and responsibility is limited to replacement of the bull in question and is acknowledged by the buyer as a condition of sale and in no way warrants loss of calf crops. On behalf of the entire Alexander family at Bone Creek, a huge welcome and thanks to all the buyers, bidders, friends and new acquaintances for all the help over the last 25 yrs. Its amazing how fast a quarter of a century goes when you’re having fun. Every cattle person I know has cattle because they choose to, it’s in their blood, their passion, hobby, lively hood and simply who they are. Hats off to every cattle person as they are living and working a dream. So many people long for retirement so they can finally do what they’ve always want to. We are a lucky crew (cattle people) to make our living doing what we have all dreamt of. There really is no better life! The market and weather have been challenging in the last 12 months, but all in all we are certainly in an up market which we will see more highs in the upcoming future. Our goal at Bone Creek has never changed. We strive to produce functional females that produce optimum offspring with little or no supervision. We want as much performance as possible but never sacrificing live calves, born unassisted that get up and suck. Our goal has never wavered; produce a better female (always)! Performance and carcass quality selected for within the boundaries of always improving the cow herd. Selection is discussed around the table and problems are not tolerated. Once a cow gets on the to go list, she never is taken off.
HOW WE SELECT REPLACEMENTS? (male and female) There is so much buzz about performance carcass, E.P.D.’s you almost have to have a computer to analyse the data. 85% of all calves born at Bone Creek come out of multiple sire fields. The calves are born and tagged with their mother’s tags and their multiple sire field. Bull calves that are too big, slow to get up or from mothers that are not worthy to produce breeding offspring are immediately ringed at birth. We can’t preselect for sire groups as we don’t know the sires at this time. The calves develop and at branding we sort according to phenotype, selecting for body structure, muscle and confirmation traits that are important to us on our ranch.

Remember one thing; these bulls are not selected on the basis of marketability but rather their ability to make a contribution to our operation. We raise bulls for our ranch operation and market within that group. We raise our cattle just like you do, commercial range operated ranch. If cattle work on our ranch, where we live, they will work anywhere.
A NEW CONCEPT – PRIVATE TREATY AUCTION SALE We thought about selling private treaty, but who gets first pick. After 25 years we have made many life long friendships and I am not about to sacrifice a friendship over a bull! Therefore all the bulls will be given a base price which will be posted on Livestockplus.ca about 10 days before the sale. The bidding will start at the base price; if no one bids the bull is for sale after the sale at the base price. Last year approximately 50% of the bulls sold at the base price. 8 bulls passed through and 4 bulls sold at the base price immediately after the sale. The base price will reflect a fair value that we will use these bulls in our operation. We are very honoured and pleased again to be working with Donnie Peacock as the auctioneer. Donnie has decades of cattle experience and will give an unbiased, honest assessment of the offering. This is our second year with Bridget Andrews and Chris Moulding at Livestock plus.ca. Bridget with a P.B. Herford background is certainly no newcomer to the cattle industry and the bull business. Chris is the go to guy (professional) when it comes to the electronics side of the operation. Thanks both of you, for your help and dedication with this endeavour. I know it is cliché, but this years offering is certainly worthy of your consideration with exceptional individuals in each division. The meat is worth the drive.
At weaning we again sort for confirmation but add the ability to perform. All the calves are tagged in the order that they are born so it is real easy to sort better performing calves. Calves are then weighed and put on a backgrounding ration of suppl., 6 lbs of grain and DDG’s , chopped hay and silage. Jan. or early Feb. the final sort is done on the bull calves. Again selecting for structural correctness, feet, muscle, body confirmation and performance. Just because a calf is a top gainer but doesn’t have the confirmation or structural correctness, he doesn’t get the go ahead to get to the next step. We then DNA to see who the calves are sired by. No calf gets a free ride because of parentage. This culling is unbiased and fair. The bulls then go to grass from May to Nov. and put back on a silage based TMR ration. Again culling for feet, structure, temperament and our eye appeal. Its amazing when you treat all the cattle the same the worthy individuals rise to the top. In a multiple sire field there are positive results from some individuals and disappointments from others. When selecting and DNA after, no calf regardless of sire popularity gets a free ride.

Joni sorts the female replacements. The heifers must be off mothers that have good udders, feet, temperament and are above average producers. She selects for trouble free, functional females that do it on there own. We have all learned not to question her assessment! She is seldom wrong.

TGA 5141C has a very strong maternal background. Dam and grand dam are very moderate, thick cows that are easy fleshing and sound. They go back to the old RED TGA MARIAS 984J sire that sired moderate, thick, easy fleshing progeny that just worked on the ranch. 984J is one of the more influential herd sires that we have had on the ranch.

The dam 5253 is definitely one of those foundation cows that you want in your herd. She is sired by the old Rambo 892H bull which has greatly influenced our herd. 892H bred cows on the ranch until 8 years old until he pulled his stifle and had to be disposed of. 5253 currently has 4 daughters in the herd right now; all very functional, sound cows. One daughter is 9202, the dam to Lot 4. Good udders and good feet on all of the females in this maternal line.

This bull’s phenotype speaks for himself. Dark red, thick, smooth, long bodied- Definitely one that stands out in the pen in my opinion. The sire, RED KBJ POKER FACE 1090Y was purchased from KBJ Round Farms. KBJ retained half interest. KBJ had a dispersal in December of 2016, and the 1090Y daughters were very well accepted trading in the top 25% of the females.

Can you tell that 5573C was born on July 10th just by looking at him? I can’t. If he can be born 3 months later then some of these bulls in here and fit in perfectly, obviously he has a competitive growth. The dam, 8202, has good feet, a good udder, and eye appeal. Sire 0177 is a home raised BITTERSWEET 2167M son, that is still here and going to breed cows this summer at 7 years old. 2167 bred cows for years on the ranch as well. Both sire and grandsire have produced many progeny that are worthy enough to be retained in the herd or be sold in previous sales. Proven sires behind 5573C.

Another 0177 son. This sire had 6 sons in the sale in 2016 and 4 in the sale for 2017 and another 2 that we ended up using last summer. We did end up using around a dozen bulls last year that are not in the sale this year. They are not necessarily the best of the group- we didn’t pull out the top end of the bulls! I just grabbed decent bulls that were handy and close to the corral to throw out with some cows to replace some bulls that were out of commission.

This bull has no papers because the dam can not be registered. He is a purebred bull with scurs. He is thick and out of a home raised bull that we are very pleased with. 2394 is very muscular, athletic, and sound. We have used him on our purebred heifers since he was 2 years old and he looks great. 5117C’s paternal grand dam, 5023R, was one of my personal favourites in the herd. She was a tank- not a huge framed cow but more moderate to small framed, but she was big boned and big barrelled with a beautiful udder and feet. Just a beauty.

This bull is a power house. 5108C is a tank. His looks speak for himself. If you need to add thickness and bring your frame score down a bit, have a look at this guy! Dam 1005Y goes back to PROPHECY 4P, who was known for adding pounds and moderating the frame on his calves. The sire 2405 is also moderate framed (like most Smart One sons) and very thick and muscular. 2405 was a paired lot in our 2014 sale with the other brother going to LLB Angus who sired their highest gaining calf who was one of the high selling bulls in their 2016 sale. There are seven 2405 sons on offer this year so be sure to check them out! The dam to 2405 is also mother to Lot 43 in this year’s offering.

The dam to 5061 has proved to be a very productive cow. She came from a cow that was purchased from the HollBrook dispersal. Dam, 9001, has produced 7 calves in the last 6 years, 4 of them making the cut to stay bulls, and had her first daughter last year that will be retained into the herd. This NET WORTH daughter was the dam to the herd bull SNOWY HILL PROPHECY 1031Y, that produced four sale bulls last year and one this year. Her bull last year was a full brother to 5061 and was kept in herd and will have his first calves drop this spring.

He is a large framed, muscular, good footed, athletic, dark red Simmental bull we purchased from Rainalta Simmentals out of Rainier, AB. This group of half blood Simmental bulls on offer this year has been a very exciting set of bulls to watch over the past year. We bred a bunch of purebred 3 year old red angus cows to 84Z and almost all of the bull calves made the cut to be here in the sale. His calves are very consistent with lots of hair and growth! The sire of 496C, namely DEEG MR 87Y was purchased from Roger and David Deeg from Strathmore. He was a big bone, extremely muscular, dark red Simmental bull that was very eye appealing. Dam 146N had a huge set of twins at 12 years old (90lb bull and 86lb heifer) and raised them both herself, and caught to calve the next season. TGA 512C is sired by one of our home raised hybrid bulls. Sire, 333Z, was a choice lot bull in 2014. This bull is one of my favourite herd sires. He looks awesome and has great feet and covers lots of ground for a big heavy bull like himself. We were short some purebred bulls that season and turned him out to clean up a field of purebred cows and that’s how 512C came to be. 512C is really blossoming in the pen and catches my eye more and more (maybe I’m biased since 333Z is on my own wish list). Don’t look past this guy!

TGA 149C is a big boned, thick bull off a great old cow. I remember when this calf was born because 5171R got crippled up really bad when she was in calf for the last time. When 5171R calved, it took all the energy she had left to have 149C. That calf was a soggy, big boned calf that was up trying to suck all the other cows around. We ended up giving him to another cow to raise because 5171R couldn’t handle it. That cow was one of those great, sound, no problem hybrid cows that always produced big calves in the fall.

TGA 157C is very smooth throughout his body and very easy moving. His dam, 97Z, is a large framed cow that has a perfect udder and is also very easy moving. 97Z is a maternal half sister to Lot 58. She is a very proud looking cow that comes from a great, no trouble cow family. Personally, I would use 157C on my cows.

5042C is a stand-out bull in the pen this year. Wow.. Maybe he should be staying home to live here but we are giving you the opportunity to add him to your program. This bull is a tank! He has a huge foot under him. He is masculine, big boned, deep, loose hided and easy fleshing. He is a twin to a male calf. His dam, 2315, is a purebred Black Angus cow sired by TGA BLACKMAN 8072U who was also a very attractive bull. His daughters had beautiful structure and were very feminine. TGA 489C is one of three chances to get your hands on a direct 24X son. 24X has produced many worthy bulls and females at the ranch. Unfortunately when it came time to semen test in 2016, 24X died that day from a ruptured artery in his lung. He was an awesome bull, big and quiet, muscular, consistent with his calves. It was a real shame but he left us with some great progeny. Don’t look past these 24X sons as they come from a great sire.
