Benchmark Angus 2010 Bull Sale

Page 1

We welcome each one of you to our 14th Annual Benchmark Bull Sale. Your continued confidence in our program is very much appreciated. 2009 was a very trying year. Severe frost in June hurt our crops and then with no moisture, harvest of hay and silage was about 20% of normal. We were fortunate to obtain a good supply of straw from friends and neighbors, and hopefully we can get through this winter in decent shape. We have been on a mission to have moderate, efficient, lowcost cows weaning a calf each year at at least half their body weight. It is years like this when you are real glad you don’t have those big ol’ hayburners around. At preg check this fall we weighed our black cows and they averaged 1330 lbs. I’d say we are about there. Our goal is to have very fertile cows that average 1300 lbs. and that wean a calf that will gain and then grade. This year our calves at weaning didn’t quite make the 50% of their mothers body weight but the drought was a determining factor. They have really come on since weaning! This is our thirteenth year ultrasounding our yearling cattle. The EPDs our cattle carry because of the ultrasound are invaluable. We hear so much complaining about the state of our industry but so few do anything to improve their opportunity to make a profit. What can you do to earn a better living? Study EPDs for guidance as to birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, milk production and, of course, the carcass characteristics you desire. How else can you improve your herd and your production. Those bulls you bought in the past sure did look good, but did they improve your production and reduce your input costs? Are your calves in demand? The bulls we bring to you are second to none. In fact, we contend that these bulls have more potential to improve your next calf crop than any set of bulls in the land. We ask you to compare and if you find better we would like to know. In fact, if you actually compare, the advertised “No. 1 Carcass Herd in Canada” numbers with Benchmark numbers, their bull sale bulls averaged +.289 for marbling while “Your Carcass Source” black sale bulls average +.426. We’ll leave that with you. So call us if we can be of assistance in any way. Our team of Andre, Dale, Mike and myself and our families invite you to visit anytime and we would love to see you on March 9. Sincerely,

Mike and Doug Munton

Elite Dams

The Canadian Elite Cow Report is an effort to identify superior cows in the Angus breed. Emphasis is placed on early puberty, breeding and early calving, followed by regularity of calving interval and above-average performance of the offspring. The Elite Cow Report requires a cow to have a minimum of three calves to determine her regularity of calving and ability to consistently produce calves with a superior weaning weight year after year. For specific Elite Cow requirements, turn to page 57.

Payoff is a bull we bought in partnership with Ole Farms in the spring of 2005. We were looking for a bull that would moderate frame, leaving thick, deep, easy-doing offspring with carcass quality second-to-none. After his four crops of calves were tested, his EPDs have proved very, very desirable. Study them carefully, they are hard to beat. Sired by the carcass great and calving-ease sire Future Direction, who shows %IMF of +0.77 with a REA of +0.64, Payoff has lived up to every expectation. His calves are born so very easy and are the most vigorous calves we have encountered. Payoff is a paternal brother to the very recent $55,000 Grand Champion at the Denver Angus Sale, 2008. Payoff ’s dam has been reported to be at the very top of the list at Standard Hill. She is by RP 3RD Bushwacker, who is well known for his very productive females, as well as great WW and YW EPDs with carcass traits that reduce fat. It should be noted that Traveler 6G is a paternal brother to Gardens Prime Time, the sire of the No. 1 proven dam for IMF. We really feel Payoff has become a critical step in our quest to develop cattle that will thrive in our environment and move forward our goal of “makin’ the grade.” His sons have been very well accepted in our last three sales and his daughters are proving to be top cows. Payoff has exceptional numbers with adequate performance, a great milk EPD and carcass genetics second-tonone. He is the No. 1 bull walking in all of Canada for BW EPD at a -1.9.

Efficiency is the bull selected by Mike and Myles Immerkar of Semex from the entire offering at Gardiners in the spring of 2007. He was described by Mark Gardiner as “one of the true power bulls of 2007.” His sire, an ABS roster bull, ranks at the top of the list with respect to every trait measured. His dam is a paternal sister to Select Sires’ Raindance bull who is renowned for thick sound females who have great udders with small teat size. The EXT 704 cow on the bottom side sold for $40,000 and has generated in excess of $750,000 in progeny sales and is a full sister to EXT 614 who sold for a valuation of $400,000. Efficiency’s numbers are hard to beat with low birth weight EPD, ranking in the top 12%, incredible weaning weight EPD of +47, ranking in the top 26% and a more incredible yearling weight EPD of +93 ranking in the top 14%. He ranks in the top 3% for %IMF and in the top 19% for ribeye while being minus for Fat. Not sure there is a better bull walking.

Our pursuit of efficient carcass cattle took us to Green Garden Angus spring of 2008. There we found Prime Star 1029. As indicated above, his birth weight was low, his weaning weight was 63% of his mother’s weight and his average daily gain was 5.60 lbs./day giving him a 365D weight of 1597 lbs. His IMF scan ratioed at 113 and he had a scrotal of 42.4 cm. His 1110 lbs. dam is by Matrix, who ranks in the top 2% of the breed for Marbling. The Matrix daughters are keepers at Green Garden being moderate, easy fleshing, high scanning cattle that are at the top in decreased cow energy requirements with he himself showing a 15.93 $EN savings. The sire of 1029 is none other than the No. 1 Proven Marbling Sire Garden’s Prime Star who was the high-selling bull to Express and Monarch at the Green Garden 2005 sale. He recorded an IMF ratio of 177. His dam Jilt C242 S1 who is by T510 was the record-selling cow at $280,000 in the 2009 Express Ranches Big Event Sale. Prime Star 1029 had the highest GeneSTAR results of the sale with Quality Grade at 17.02 and scored six stars for Feed Efficiency. He is one of only eight 2007-born bulls on the Canadian registry that is 0.70 or better for Marbling. As a matter of interest, two others of the eight are Benchmark bulls. Oh, and by the way, who has the highest marbling 2009 calf on the registry? Benchmark at 0.87. The ability to calve easy, grow and gain rapidly and efficiently to market weight, have a moderate mature size and hang up a superior carcass is all important to us, thus the offering by Gardens Prime Star 1029.

We had been looking for a 6807 son for some time, the great breeding bull that he is. He is the sire of so many great ones including Alberda Traveler 416, Connealy Dateline, Duff Encore, Rimrock, GDAR Traveler 011, GDAR Traveler 044, GAR Commitment, OCC Anchor, OCC Echelon, OCC Emblazon, T510, Sitz Traveler 9929, Woodhill Alliance and likely others that I have missed. And for daughters one could go on and on. Then when we came across a young son out of a true breeding gem, we knew we had to own Baron. Could turn out to be the best money we’ve spent on a bull. The dam of Baron, GAR EXT 704, is an own daughter of the immortal EXT. She is a flush sister to GAR Exaltation 3144 and the record valued GAR EXT 614 who sold one-half interest for $230,000. 704 has had embryo flushes sell for $40,000, pregnancies bring as high as $80,000 and produced a daughter at $170,000 valuation, plus many others. 704 as of spring 2008 had 33 daughters in production with a combined weaning ratio of 103, an IMF ratio of 103 and an REA ratio of 100 on 83 scanned progeny. Baron is perfect on his feet and legs, has a great hip and as good of a rear quarter as you’ll find. He is deep and wide based. He has ample performance with a 725 lbs. weaning weight and a 1288 lbs. yearling weight. He scanned a %IMF of 5.03 with a 13.4 REA and had a 38 cm scrotal. His EPD profile indicates above average growth and gainability as well as milk, and his carcass EPDs indicate good marbling and increased REA. He arrived late in the breeding season, thus the later birth date on the calves offered. Don’t discount them because of age, they will work and by breeding season get the job done.

$ Value Indexes were developed by the American Angus Assoc. expressed in dollars per head indicating value differences for weaned calf value, feedlot value, grid value and beef value. $B, an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. The spring 2010 Angus breed avg. for $B comes in at + 38.13 while Predestined is at +68.35. Predestined was No. 1 for $B for four consecutive sire summaries, 2004 through 2008 and still ranks in the top 1% for $B while recording the sixth highest Marbling EPD among proven sires and ranking in the top 1% for REA EPD and the top ten percent for YW EPD. The dam of Predestined was the $ 370,000 high selling cow of the 2008 spring sale season . Predestined improves $ Values, adds width, fleshing ability, muscle and soundness, he excels for fertility, deepens flanks and adds value and good looks to his calves. The five sons offered are all from our embryo program and we recommend them highly. They represent the best in growth and carcass genetics.

She also has three daughters retained. 14C was a donor for Mountain View Farms with 77 progeny, her dam was a donor for Hamiltons with 76 progeny, while 80J and 145 served for Benchmark with 36 progeny to date. Oh, and we’ve got to tell you that a maternal brother, Paradigm 4176, the high selling bull at Sale IX to Frank Strimbold at $7,500 was treasured indeed. Just ask Frank !! Carcass Ultrasound With all the data that comes with each bull, I’m sure at times it must be overwhelming. In order to use body composition EPD’s of ultrasound data to their full potential, a breeder must have an understanding of the ultrasound terminology. Several of the ultrasound measurements are comparable to the familiar carcass measurements. The data is simply collected on yearling bulls and heifers instead of market ready steers. Take a step back from looking at the numbers and become comfortable with the terminology. RIB FAT: An external fat measurement taken between the 12th and 13th ribs - the location a carcass would be split into quarters in the coolerreported in inches. Rib fat is the main factor in the USDA Yield Grade equation. RIBEYE AREA (REA): An area measurement of the longissimus dorsi, or ribeye muscle - reported in square inches. This image tends to be the most difficult to collect and requires the most highly skilled interpreting technician. Both the rib fat and ribeye area measurements are taken from the same image. RUMP FAT: An external fat measurement taken from an image collected between the hooks and the pins of the animal, reported in inches. The rump fat measurement coupled with the rib fat measurement, is used to determine more accurately the overall external body fat, enhancing the accuracy of predicting percent retail product (PRP). In most cases, an animal will exhibit more fat over the rump than the rib due to physiological process of “laying on fat”. Therefore, more variation is often displayed in the rump fat measurements of a contemporary group than the rib fat. This image is highly repeatable and is the least difficult to collect or interpret. INTRAMUSCULAR FAT (%IMF): This measurement determines the amount of fat within the muscle (similar to marbling) and is reported in “%”. This measurement should be collected when cattle are maintaining a high level of nutrition. The field technician collects four images and the values generated by the interpreting software are averaged for an overall %IMF. The Angus Associations, both AAA and CAA have adopted the CUP (Centralized Ultrasound Processing) program for Ultrasounding Carcass Data and are using this information for formulating Carcass EPD’s. This is the 13th year we have provided ultrasound measurements as taken by certified technicians from Windy Ridge Livestock. We feel it is very important that you, our valued customer, know what is under the hide as that really does determine value. It has been determined through many studies that carcass traits are highly heritable and that feeding has only a marginal effect upon the resulting carcass - genetics determine carcass quality!

Expected Progeny Differences Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are statistics generated for individual cattle through national genetic evaluations. EPDs:

• allow breeders to estimate a young animal’s breeding value – that animal’s value as a parent • allow a fair comparison of breeding value by removing environmental bias such as climate, feed and special management • the best tool available to compare animals between herds, countries and year of birth • help breeders make informed decisions regarding breed ing stock selection by evaluating numerous traits such as growth-related traits (BW, WW, YW, Milk), carcass (REA, FAT, %IMF, etc.) and reproductive efficiency (CE, MCE, SC) • estimate the group performance of one parent compared to the group performance of another parent, assuming similar mates

To evaluate seedstock, use EPDs, pedigree and visual assessment. With EPDs, the concept of “intermediate optimums” works best. Selection for one trait or for extremes generally results in unexpected consequences due to genetic correlations – for example, intense selection for high yearling weight will also increase birth weight. Successful cattle breeding requires a thoughtful and balanced approach to optimize fertility, growth and carcass merit while improving profitability and efficiency.

This calf came in dam from Dunford Royal. We really, really like this cow. Her lineage includes BR Midland, he highest selling bull ever out of the Midland Bull Test, 036 the carcass grandaddy, GAR EXT 2114 a $120,000 cow that has generated more than $2.5 million in progeny sales, GAR Scotch Cap 867, the dam of 2114 who has full sisters and daughters that are highly treasured all over North America. The sire here is a flush brother to the Semex Sire who was the high-seller at Dunford Royal’s 2008 Bull Sale. The dam of 6063S is a highly valued donor for Dunford with at least four sons and eight daughters in purebred herds. 6063S is seeing heavy service at Dunford and Blue Oak Farms in Ontario.

Our latest Red herdsire is “Montana.” He comes from Basin Angus in Montana and brings some of the very best outcross genetics available. His sire traces to the Black breed giant N Bar Emulation EXT and features such Red genetics as Basin Sensation 702E, Cherokee Canyon 4912 and Glacier Logan. His sire also has a shot of Scotch Cap, QAS Traveler 23-4 and Rainmaker 340. On the dam’s side, she is an own daughter of the carcass giant Future Direction and further traces to Rainmaker 340, Willabar Gay Gordon 67A, PS Power Paly and Sayre Patriot. An unbelievable blending of the best of Black and Red Angus genetics. “Montana” himself is exactly what we were looking for in a Red Angus herdsire: ease of calving, growth and gainability, along with breed-leading carcass genetics. “Montana” himself ratioed 111 for weaning weight, 113 for yearling weight, 110 for %IMF and 105 for ribeye area. Take a good look at the breed-changing bulls by “Montana.”

Late in 2007 we were able to lease Serenade for our summer calving program. He did us well leaving a good set of calves and bringing new genetics to our program. He is well below average for BW, above average for WW and YW, and well above average for Marbling and REA. Moving the program forward with Serenade. These 2-year-olds offered are all virgin bulls and as you can see by the 205D and 365D weights have been on limited groceries. They will stand the test of time.

Canadian Elite Cow Criteria: 1. The cow must be enrolled in the Canadian Angus Performance Program. 2. The cow must have a calf with a 205-day weight recorded within the past 18 months. 3. The cow must have her first calf no later than the within-herd average age of first calving plus 30 days. The within-herd average calving age is calculated individually for each herd. 4. The cow must maintain a regular calving interval. 5. The average of the cow’s first three calves’ weaning weight ratio must be at least 105. If she fails to do this with her first three calves, she can qualify later providing the average progeny weaning weight ratio is 105, and she meets the other requirements. 6. The cow’s calf must be in a contemporary group with no less than 10 herd mates to determine the weaning weight ratio. 7. The cow’s progeny must be sired by a registered Angus bull. 8. To continue to qualify each year, the cow must produce regularly (stay within the regular in-herd calving interval) and wean a calf that helps maintain or improve the average weaning ratio of 105. 9. Once a cow is designated an Elite Cow, she is always an Elite Cow, however she will not be published in a year where her index average drops below 105.
