l Our family would like to welcome you to our 12th Annual Bull Sale. It is with great excitement and pride that we present the top bulls of our 2007 calf crop. Over the years we have worked hard to develop a fantastic local market for our product and are very thankful for your support. We remain enthusiastic about the seedstock business and will continue to raise high quality, trait balanced bulls with emphasis on an efficient cow herd. We are happy to have Sebastien & Sarah Stewart, Nathan Jensen and Linda Graham as guest consignors at this years event. They are terrific cattle people with very similar breeding philosophies and genetics. Please take the opportunity to meet these great people. You will be impressed with their bulls that round out a strong sale offering. All the bulls have been fed here at Lazy MC. As in past years they have received a balanced 13% corn silage ration and have been grown out gradually. A big thank you to Speargrass Cattle Co. for the quality silage the bulls receive. As you look through the bulls in this catalog you will see a strong focus on calving ease plus performance with many moderate birth weights suitable for your heifer programs. We pay close attention to structure and phenotype. These herd sires are some of the top bulls in the industry. We recognize that each commercial operation has unique management, nutrition, economics and breeds that heavily influence your selection criteria. That is why we provide you with as much information, solid genetics and outcross sires designed to fit different markets all based on our moderate trait balanced philosophy. Join us on March 15 at the new sale location, “Silver Sage Community Corral” for dinner and a visit. For any questions about the sale offering or to view the bulls and cowherd please give us a call. We appreciate the confidence and trust many of you have given our program and will be here to help select the sires to best fit your needs. Kind Regards, Clint & Angela Morasch and family

Welcome to the 12th annual Signature Series Bull Sale. Sarah and I are very excited to be working with Clint and Angela this year. Our goals are very similar, as are our tastes in Red Angus genetics. The bulls are moderate, rugged and uniform. Our awareness of today’s economic challenges is greater than ever. We are committed to continually improving our herd with calving ease, early growth, feed efficiency and longevity being the most important traits. The overall offering of the three programs represented is abundant with bulls that will suit programs looking for low maintenance cattle that will raise excellent quality calves. With all the bulls being fed at Lazy MC, it is easy to eliminate the bottom in order to provide you with the best. We extend a sincere thank you to Clint and Angela for the great job they have done in developing the bulls. This year’s offering from Stewart Cattle Company excels in calving ease with many low birth weight calves posting excellent weaning weights. Please visit our web site for more information about our offering, donor cows and semen availability. Kind Regards, Sebastien & Sarah Stewart and family

UNDERSTANDING ULTRASOUND
THE RANCHERS’ GUIDE TO EPDS
The first thing producers want to know about ultrasound is: How accurate is it? The answer to that question depends upon who does the actual scanning of the animals and who interprets the images. Ultrasound data was collected and analyzed by Jamie Jensen, a technician that is certified by AUP and CUP. This means that this technician has met the standards set by many breed associations. The accuracy, although not perfect, is high enough that bulls selected based upon ultrasound, result in positive genetic change in progeny carcass traits. Heritability for carcass traits are moderate to high which is slightly higher than birth weights, weaning weights and yearling weights.
The bull is merely a delivery system for the genetics he passes on. Performing this job requires them to be sound, fertile and athletic. However, it is the reliability of their genetic predictions that ultimately bear out their true value to producers’ bottom line. Remember, the market you seek to participate in is just as much a part of your environment as rainfall and available feed stuffs. Target your market and work backwards to find the right bulls. Performing this task can well be summarized in these three steps: 1. Know the markets you wish to hit - feeder calves, yearling, replacement females. 2. Have a true appraisal of how close your cow herd is to that target, understanding your cows have to continue to live and reproduce in your environment. 3. Identify bulls whose EPDs predict the ability to move your cow herd in the right direction for the traits required to hit your market end point. For example, suppose your old herd bull has a YW EPD of 45. You buy a new bull with a YW EPD of 65. How much will the new bull boost your calves’ yearling weights? The answer... “Who knows?” We can not predict how much performance will change from one year to the next because of varying environmental conditions (rainfall, temperature, available feed, etc.). However, we do know this: the calves raised in the same contemporary group sired by the new bull will have the genetics to weigh an average of 20 pounds more at 365 days of age than calves sired by the old bull’s.
Marbling Marbling is the best indicator we have to tell us what kind of eating experience we will have when eating beef! Extensive research shows that average AAA and above marbling produces the most satisfied consumers. As marbling increases, so does the juiciness, the flavorfullness and the tenderness. This may not always be true but for the most part AAA marbling produces more satisfied customers than does A or AA marbling carcasses. 3.00 - 3.99........................SINGLE A......................STANDARD 4.00 - 4.99........................DOUBLE AA.........................SELECT ABOVE 5.0.....................TRIPLE AAA.......................CHOICE Back Fat (mm) Fat depth decreases lean meat yield. Fat bulls have less lean meat/muscle in the carcass. The fat measurement also gives an indication of the bulls fleshing ability. Calves from a bull with very little fat may finish too slowly in the feedlot. Body condition score (fat depth) in females is related to their ability to reach puberty at an early age, produce milk, rebreed and maintian a short calving interval. On the other hand, bulls carrying excessive fat may suffer reduced fertility. Ribeye Area (in2) The ribeye is the largest muscle in the body at birth so REA gives an indication of overall carcass muscling. Cutability (%LMY) Cutability is the percentage lean meat yield in the carcass. Yield grade is an important factor in both Canada and the USA. Producing calves with a high genetic potential for this trait can be an important objective of a breeding program. Back fat will reduce yield by 7 to 8 times what REA will increase yield. Summary Like all traits, we should avoid the extremes. Moderation is the key. As producers we need to evaluate our own females and then decide what kind of progeny we want to produce and this should dictate what kind of sire we want to purchase.

GUIDE FOR USING EPDS EPDs are one of several tools that should be used together to ensure you find the best bulls for your needs and long term goals. EPDs do not indicate how many pounds will be added to a herd’s average by using a particular bull, but rather serve as a comparison tool for genetic differences among bulls. EPDs can and probably will change on a bull as more progeny information is submitted. In fact, every bull evaluated will get a new set of EPDs the next time the association conducts genetic evaluation. EPDs cannot be compared across breeds. Birth Weight (BW): Expressed in pounds. Best estimate of differences in birth weight. Higher EPD’s mean higher birth weights. Weaning/Yearling Weight (WW/YW): Expressed in pounds. Best estimate of overall growth. Higher EPDs mean more weaning/yearling weight. Milk: The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk. Expressed in pounds of weaning weight. Total Maternal (TM): A value combing growth and milk information. A prediciton of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters.
DNA TESTING Genomics (DNA testing) is cutting edge technology for identifying genetics that contribute to beef quality. Producers can use this information to add value to their herd and enable a positive impact to your bottom line. By combining DNA tests with other information, such as EPDs, it is possible to make breeding decisions that are based on more precise information regarding each individual animal’s genetics and to ultimately shorten the time and number of generations necessary to see practical results. Igenity meat trait results report the scores obtained from analysis of multiple markers in genes related to carcass composition. This analysis associates the genotype result with the magnitude, or size, of the trait identified. In general, animals with low scores for fat thickness and yield grade will have high scores for hot carcass weight and ribeye area. Igenity L Can Help You: • Buy L-tt bulls to improve your herd’s potential for marbling • Retain cows and select replacement heifers with desired leptin genotype, along with other genetic traits
CALVING EASE SCORE We evaluate each bull for calving ease determined by bone size, actual birth weight, BW EPD and profile. Scoring as follows: *** Recommended for use on moderate-framed first calf heifers with minimal or no calving trouble. ** Recommended for use on large-framed first calf heifers with produce minimal or no calving trouble. * Recommended for use on cows with produce minimal or no calving trouble.

ET 82 649 1034 2.83 ** Herd Bull! Clutch is one of the very good Smash sons on offer this year. He is moderate, has excellent feet, hair and temperament. He is a maternal brother to Pathfinder with more milk and a modest BW. His dam is one of Canada’s most popular cows with sons working in several herds and many high-selling daughters. Full sister to Clutch has a beautiful udder and is a smart young cow. This calf should be a real herd builder.

This is quite a bull. With just an 85 lbs start he had a 120 wean index and followed through with a 109 yearling index. We feel this bull will work great on both heifers and cows. Of active calves he ranks in the top 4% for WW and top 5% for YW. Cross Over daughters all have super udders and strong dark feet.
This bull boasts a 110 wean index. Maternal grand dam is an elite female. 419P will likely become one as well. Of active calves he ranks in the top 3% for WW and top 10% See reference dam picture on page 9 for YW.
Solid, dependable genetics from beginning to end!

Gridiron is an exciting mix of red and black genetics. 66S is a powerfully built calf with good feet and bone. He is moderate framed, square hipped and can get out and move. His dam, 44L, is our model female. She is extremely deep made and wedge shaped with a good udder and feet. Her sons have averaged over $4000 in our bull sale including Lazy MC Boom 44R at $6500 for 1/2 interest to Prairie Land and Cattle. This cow family has been prosperous for us. The Boom 118N genetics offer the performance and quality structure of Boomtown along with the calving ease and maternal excellence of our 4K cow. Add the fleshing ability and rib shape of 44L, a Krugerand 490 granddaughter, and Gridiron is the result! Semen available through Semex. $20/dose Owned with Blue Rock Cattle Company
