ADVANCING THE COMMON GOOD United Way is working to advance the common good by focusing on education, income and health. These are the building blocks for a good life — a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement and good health. Our goal is to create long-lasting change that prevents problems from happening in the first place. We invite you to be part of the change. Together, united, we can inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow. That’s what it means to LIVE UNITED.

- EDUCATION, INCOME AND HEALTH. MEET SHANNON

Not long ago, Shannon Fellows, his wife and four children were living in a van in a local parking lot. With only $300 among them, the family learned about Clark County Community Services (CCCS), a United Way Member Agency. CCCS helped the family with emergency housing and put them in touch with a case manager. Shannon even enrolled his family in CCCS’s self-sufficiency program, where they blossomed. “They really just took care of us,” Shannon remembers. Eventually, Shannon was able to obtain a job and provide for his family on his own. “As soon as I got a job, I worked harder than I’d ever worked before.” When United Way came to his workplace to ask for a donation, he said, “It was just a given for me. We had been helped, and I just wanted to do something to give back. I only did $5 a pay check, which didn’t seem like a whole lot, but I was glad to do that. That $5 a paycheck didn’t hurt me a lick. I didn’t miss it, I never missed it. But I knew it was going to someone that knew what to do with it. And it made me feel good.” Shannon had gone through credit counseling, and even had a savings account for a rainy day. He was extremely proud to move his family into a new home. Unfortunately, the economy has changed over the last several months, and Shannon has again found himself laid off and out of a job. He is eager to get back to work, but knows he’ll be okay in the mean time. He has hope, and he has folks like CCCS to lean on, thanks to your generosity. “I don’t believe that myself, my four kids and my wife would be here if it weren’t for the help that we received. We really, truly feel like we’ve been blessed.”
