The Lincoln Highway, our nation’s first coast-to-coast highway, stretched from New York City to San Francisco in 1913. It’s the one route that changed America forever – marking the birth of popular American tourism – vacationing by automobile. Early motorists traveled to see where history was made, to experience the beauty of nature, to learn about regional differences and to have outdoor fun…the same reasons people take automobile vacations today! www.lhhc.org/ 8 ■ Live.Work.Play

The LHHC is one of twelve special “Heritage Areas” in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, collectively known as “Heritage PA,” which is committed to improving operations, marketing, government relations and public advocacy for all of Pennsylvania’s Heritage Areas. The mission of the LHHC is to identify, conserve, promote, and interpret the cultural, historical, natural, recreational, and economic resources along the Lincoln Highway in Westmoreland, Somerset, Bedford, Fulton, Franklin, and Adams Counties. Through these regions, the original highway is marked with red, white and blue signs. The LHHC was designated in 1995 to create opportunities for preserving and interpreting resources associated with the Lincoln Highway and the more than 200 years of regional transportation history that preceded it. The York Fair

The York Fair, “America’s First Fair®” is an annual Fair held in September, beginning the first Friday after Labor Day in York, PA. In 2015, the York Fair celebrated 250 years since the first York Fair in 1765. The traditions of fairs in the New World began with the York Fair, America’s first fair, held in the historic old Town of York in 1765, eleven years before the nation was founded. A charter to hold that fair was granted to the people of York by Thomas Penn, son of William Penn in recognition of “the flourishing state to which the town hath arrived through their industry.” Those early gatherings were reported to have been “the liveliest days of the whole year.” At that time, the York Fair existed as a two-day agricultural market on the town commons, now known as Penn Park. Records don’t tell us too much about the York Fair during the American Revolution or the War of 1812, but we know the troops passing through York camped in the commons, so they would have shared the grounds with the Fair. In 1853 a group of prominent York County agricultural leaders formed the York County Agricultural Society for the purpose of making the fair a three-day event and finding it a new home. That society purchased seven acres and established a new fairground in 1856. The new location was on what was then the east side of the City of York near what is now Queen Street and King Street. In 1861, within days of the firing on Fort Sumter, injured Union soldiers were placed in temporary hospitals set up in the old Penn Commons and in the new fairgrounds. In 1862 the Secretary of War made those hospitals permanent so by fair time that year, the halls and grounds were filled with wounded from Antietam and the fair was closed until 1865. Following the Civil War, the York County Agricultural Society, in 1888, decided the fair had once again outgrown its grounds and these early fair leaders purchased land and moved the event to the 73-acre site that was eventually expanded to become the current York Fair/York Expo Center property. The fair remained open after the outbreak of World War I, but was not held in 1918 due to an influenza outbreak that killed 166 people in York. During World War II most fairs and the Pennsylvania Farm Show closed, but the York Fair, whose president at that time was Samuel Lewis, stayed open, causing plenty of controversy. In 1942 the fair dates were changed so that the event moved from October to September where it is celebrated to this day. The York Fair remained open throughout the long war in Vietnam and in 1975 it was expanded to become a nine-day event including two Saturdays and a Sunday. Then in 1997 the fair itself expanded to become a ten-day fair that includes two full weekends. It now opens on the first Friday after Labor Day and closes on Sunday of the second weekend. The York Fair was underway during the tragic events of September 11 th, 2001, when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon. The fair remained open in the days following the terrorist attack, since the Board of Directors felt the fair was a showcase and celebration of American culture that had been attacked without cause. Today, the property purchased by the Society back in 1888 serves the community all year long. More than 160 events are booked into the fair’s buildings and grounds every year. These popular happenings include Street Rod conventions, train shows, motorcycle events and many kinds of trade shows and spectator events. To expand that success, the York County Agricultural Society constructed its new Arena in 2003, creating 114,000 square feet of rent-able year-round exhibit space for the York Expo Center and a new home for all the livestock events during future celebrations of America ’s First Fair. In its first year of operation, the Arena hosted the Grand Ole Opry, graduations, conventions, car shows, trade shows and a major political rally for President George W. Bush. Antiquing on the Lincoln Highway

Antiquing is a great way to explore the Lincoln Highway. As the historic route meanders through south central Pennsylvania, it touches several small antiquing towns. New Oxford and Abbottstown are great fun for antiquers as well as historic Gettysburg. As the Lincoln Highway crosses the valley of the South Mountain, it traverses the beautiful land of Michaux State Forest and enters Fayetteville in Franklin County PA, where Caledonia State Park and Totem Pole Playhouse reside. It is a lovely drive. About five miles ahead on the Lincoln Highway is Fayetteville Antique Mall, a treasurer hunter’s dream. With more than 350 dealers and open seven days a week year-round, antiquers can explore to their heart’s content. Continuing on historic Route 30, keep an eye out for the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor’s outdoor museum concept. It includes building murals and a parade of gas pumps, painted to showcase key aspects of the local piece of the historic corridor. The Lincoln Highway now winds into downtown Chambersburg, where Gypsy on the Square has some great antiques from across the United States and Europe. As the highway moves west of town, it comes to Shatzer’s Orchard, where the outdoor museum concept of the Lincoln Highway continues with a replica of an old fruit truck and a “just peachy” gas pump. On the drive west, the highway opens up into a breathtaking view of the Tuscarora Mountains and Buchanan State Forest with more than 1000 acres of Cowan’s Gap State Park. Try antiquing on the Lincoln Highway, and explore small town America. The beautiful views are a bonus.

1864 Brings Franklin County to Life on July 14-15

1864 Ransoming, Burning & Rebirth of Chambersburg is set for July 19-20, 2019 in Franklin County. The centerpiece of the 1864 weekend is the light show in downtown Chambersburg on Saturday, July 20, 6 PM to 10 PM. 1864 portrays the powerful history of Chambersburg Pennsylvania, ransomed and burned on July 30, 1864 by Confederate troops during the Civil War. The light show, so real the center of town appears to be ablaze just as it was more than 150 years ago, culminates with the rebirth of Chambersburg., flushing the buildings with beautiful light to symbolize the emergence from the ashes to prosperity and vitality. The 1864 Weekend kicks off on Friday, 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM, at Allison-Antrim Museum in Greencastle, another Franklin County community occupied by Confederate troops during the Civil War, with the 1864 Civil War Ball in the 19th century, German bank barn. Participants will be guided by the Victorian Dance Ensemble, the performing troupe of the Civil War Dance Foundation, and are invited to dress in Civil War era attire, contemporary formal attire, or contemporary business attire. The Civil War Ball offers a glimpse of Victorian culture and a respite from the reality of America’s strife. Tickets--$15/person or $25/couple—will be available on Eventbrite. Saturday’s emphasis moves to Chambersburg on July 20 for Old Market Day—an old-fashioned, daylong street festival with hundreds of vendors and live entertainment, sponsored by the Downtown Business Council of Chambersburg. Saturday evening, 1864 takes center stage with historic walking tours, living history, speakers, exhibits, prizes, giveaways, old-fashioned photo booth, pets from the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, book signings, glowin-the-dark face painting, and Civil War period games for kids. The highlight of the events preceding the 1864 Light Show is the final round of A Cappella & Unplugged, the three-round music and singing contest. Spectators can vote for their favorite act and have their in-person vote tabulated with online voting to select the winner, who receives $500 and bragging rights to the 5th annual talent search contest. As dark approaches, the town transforms to 1864 and the story of the town’s ransoming, burning and rebirth comes to life with incredible light and atmospheric effects. Throughout the event, Confederate soldiers will be attempting to gather ransom money from the crowd. All “ransom money” will be donated to Franklin County Habitat for Humanity. Leading up to 1864 is a week-long event called ChambersFest, sponsored by the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce. Among these events are Scoop-A-Palooza, an ice cream fundraiser for education, Tim & Susan Cook Memorial 5K, and a Restaurant Week. 1864 is just one way to explore Franklin County PA. Explore history, arts and architecture, recreation, natural beauty, fresh foods and the warm hospitality of communities like Chambersburg, Greencastle, Mercersburg, Shippensburg, and Waynesboro. Get started at the new Franklin County Visitors Center on Routes 11 and 30—the 11/30 Visitors Center. Plan a visit or find out more at ExploreFranklinCountyPA.com or by contacting 866.646.8060.

The battle was fought at Gettysburg because of the area road system— it had nothing to do with shoes. The Town of Gettysburg, population 2,000, was a town on the rise. It boasted three newspapers, two institutes of higher learning, several churches and banks, but no shoe factory or warehouse. The ten roads that led into town are what brought the armies to Gettysburg. The shoe myth can be traced to a late-1870s statement by Confederate general Henry Heth.
