cover artist
Susan Blakely
Susan Blakely is an emerging fine artist currently based in Berks County, PA. While she is no stranger to fine art, creating without boundaries is a stretch after a long history as a commercial designer. Known for incorporating vibrant color, Susan’s work as a juvenile product designer for Carter’s, Disney and Target has carved a notable reputation in the gift industry as well as landing coveted spots in PRINT’s Regional Design Annual, a regional emmy and industry recognition. Accustomed to working as a commissioned illustrator, Susan’s plans include initiatives in public spaces, corporate solutions and large environmental installations. And in the meantime, sharing her joy while returning to creativity is the goal. Please follow along with and share in Susan’s journey as she launches this phase of her artistic vision.
Poppies! Is an early digital work in Susan’s fine art offerings. Light and gentle breeze move gracefully among dancing blooms full of saturated color. This work becomes a feature in any space by simply capturing the joy of a single, beautiful moment.

Christine Vasiliades PUBLISHER & FOUNDER
PUBLISHER’S WELCOME
This is our 2024 snapshot of Central PA. I have enjoyed visiting and getting to know the businesses in this guide and I know you will, too! Six and a half years ago, I started this business with one goal in mind—to help small businesses and non-profits grow. I was determined to develop an affordable way for them to advertise and create the reach that they deserve. Today, my goal is still the same.
Emily Fogelman
GRAPHIC DESIGN & LAYOUT Emily Fogelman is a freelance graphic designer in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. She has been part of the Live.Work.Play. team for over four years and has been a designer for more than 18 years. She is a graduate of Penn State University and the The Art Institutes. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, cooking, and spending time with her family. www.EmilyFogelman.com
With current challenges for small businesses, like rising costs and labor shortages, I see businesses struggle, and unfortunately some close their doors. I ask myself, “What can I do to help? How can the readers of this guide help?” First, continue to eat, shop, live, work, and play in your local community. And when you do, please share your experiences with others. On page 9 of this guide, you will find a list of FREE ways to support local businesses. You will be surprised at just how simple and easy it can be. Thank you for paging through one or more of our four hard cover or digital guides. Our readership continues to grow, and I am proud to say we have reached readers in over 290 states and countries and close to 2,000 cities.
Now get out there and visit a brick-and-mortar business today. And, as always, enjoy your next Live.Work.Play. adventure! In gratitude,

Free Ways to Support Local Businesses In the spirit of the Live.Work.Play. mission to support small businesses, we have compiled this list of quick, easy, and FREE ways that you can support local businesses.
Review them on Google
The best way to support any business, next to purchasing their services or product, is to give them a Google review. It takes less than a minute and helps them with online exposure. Reviews influence search engine results and a business will rank higher if they have more reviews. Reviews also build credibility and help attract new customers.
Share their posts on social media
Go one step further than hitting the “Like” button—consider sharing a post. On Facebook, there is typically a share button on the lower right bottom of the post. On Instagram, you can take a screen shot of the post. Use the arrow icon which allows you to share to stories or other platforms. You can also download a repost app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store which allows you to share a post.
Sign up for their newsletter
Show that you’re a fan, but also be the first to know about events, new products, or special promotions.
Refer a friend or family member
Refer a business by word-of-mouth. Your family members or friends will likely trust and remember them more if it is shared personally. You can even do a referral by including a business card in a gift to someone.
Pass these tips on to others! What business did you come in contact with today? Did you have a good experience? Whether it’s a dry cleaner, landscaper, shoe store, coffee shop, local artist, class instructor, take a moment to tell the world! Put a smile on a business owner’s face today!

Michelle Haring
Michelle Haring is a bookstore owner turned author. She began her book career in 1987 and has owned Cupboard Maker Books for over 25 years. Because she has been so immersed in the bookstore world, she decided she didn’t want to set her cozy mystery series within one. Death Motors was born from the realization that the car business is a natural setting for murder. When Michelle isn’t writing, you can find her reading and sorting through the plethora of books at Cupboard Maker Books. She’s found all sorts of items in books, but has yet to find herself living in a cozy mystery scenario. Death Of A Salewoman is the first book in the Death Motors series. You can learn more at DeathMotors.com 10 | LIVE. WORK. PLAY.

One of the largest museums in the U.S. that portrays the whole story of the American Civil War. OPEN DAILY 1 Lincoln Circle in Reservoir Park HARRISBURG, PA 717.260.1861

TH
Welcome to the National Civil War Museum The sweeping drive through Reservoir Park gives an unparalleled view of the majestic building atop the highest point in Harrisburg ~ The National Civil War Museum. As you approach the entrance to the Museum, you will be struck anew at the Moment of Mercy statue by sculptor Terry Jones, framed by the walk of valor. Take a moment to reflect here on the mercy given to the fallen soldiers by one brave man, Confederate Sergeant Richard Kirkland, during the Battle of Fredricksburg, forever memorialized in bronze. Once inside the Museum, let the grand rotunda’s splendor take you back to a time of sweeping staircases and grand dreams before you enter the Museum galleries and are forever changed by the history you will see. The National Civil War Museum will take you back in time to learn about the American Civil War, where over 620,000 Americans perished. The Museum seeks to tell the whole story of this most troubled chapter in American History while focusing on the issues, the people, and the lives that were affected and contains over 25,000 artifacts. A self-guided tour takes you through 17 galleries illustrating the war and all its consequences, beginning with A House Divided, 1850-1860: a timeline of incidents and issues prior to the Civil War and concludes with Lincoln: War & Remembrance: a retrospective of the war; the martyred President; the role of veterans after the war. In addition to our static displays and artifacts, our award-winning We the People video program, the continuing story of ten characters, lasts about one hour and concludes in the museum’s theater, as the Nation’s joy turns to sorrow in a 16-minute film discussing the end of the war and the assassination of President Lincoln. The vistas that are seen from the Museum grounds and our covered Observatory span four counties and the scenic Susquehanna River narrow. Also visible is the area of Harrisburg that contained Camp Curtin, the largest camp of rendezvous in the North during the war. The capital of Pennsylvania and a major rail hub for men and materials, Harrisburg played a vital role in the Civil War and was threatened by the invasion of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Before you leave the Museum, stop by the gift shop for that special gift and browse our amazing stock of books, some autographed that you won’t find anywhere else.

Your adventure awaits...
Located along the Anclote River where it intersects the Gulf of Mexico, Tarpon Springs is a rich mixture of culture, customs, and families. Its waterfront is a working seaport and shopping district with the unmistakable feel of a Grecian fishing village. Its downtown is a showcase of proud historic buildings and homes from the gracious Victorian era. It’s an unlikely blend of histories, and one you’ll find only in Tarpon Springs, Pinellas County’s oldest city. 72 | LIVE. WORK. PLAY.
Past Indian history in this beautiful coastal community predates the arrival of the first settlers in the early 1800’s. Soon after, the advent of the railroad and the building of the Anclote Key Lighthouse brought many positive changes to the area. The town’s Victorian influences stem from the late 1800’s to about 1905, when the seaside village became a playground for wealthy Northerners. These seasonal residents built luxurious estates along Spring Bayou. Soon Tarpon Springs gained fame as one of the great health centers and winter resorts of the time.
Welcome Center 1 N. Pinellas Avenue Monday–Friday, 10 am–5 pm Visitors’ Center 100 Dodecanese Boulevard 7 days, 10:30 am–3:30 pm 727-937-6109 TarponSpringsChamber.org
Two Cultures, One City... Tarpon Springs Rich sponge beds, discovered in the 1880’s, spawned a flourishing new industry. In 1905, young sponge divers were recruited from the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. The sponge industry thrived, as did the Greek community, and the town’s focus changed. Some of the Greek immigrants who came to the area continue their traditional trade of sponge diving. Today Tarpon Springs is a showcase of both cultures, from its vintage Victorian era mansions and buildings to its lively Greek traditions and community.
Experience the flavor of Greece and the excitement of an authentic working waterfront on the Sponge Docks. Visit authentic Greek restaurants and bakeries, sponge diving and sightseeing tour boats, unique shops, antique shops and art galleries, and the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, home of the largest Epiphany celebration in the Western Hemispheres – No Passport Required!
