In the earliest neighborhood of a beautiful river city called Harrisburg, a stately mansion recalls the first settlement by an English pioneer named John Harris, Sr. And the best part is, you can visit this place and discover the fascinating story that took place over three centuries in a fine, old house. A friend of the William Penn family, John Harris, Sr. arrived here in the early 18th century to establish relations with the Native Americans and to facilitate the westward movement of settlers. This he did by establishing a trading post and later a tavern and ferry for crossing the wide, but usually shallow, Susquehanna when it became too deep to cross with a wagon. His was one of the most important outposts on the frontier, for Native Americans, with whom he dealt fairly, and for European settlers. After Harris died in 1748, his son, John Harris, Jr., carried on his father’s enterprises and established himself as a preeminent citizen on the frontier. In

1766, he built a stone Georgian-style house on a rise above the riverbank. Not much is known about the layout of the house, but it is surmised that there existed four rooms downstairs and four bedchambers upstairs. The house still stands, having had a number of owners who altered and enlarged it to suit their needs. One owner was Thomas Elder, who bought it in 1835. A prominent attorney for more than forty years, Elder served as state Attorney General, then organized the Harrisburg Bridge Company, which built the first bridge over the Susquehanna River. Elder was president of the Harrisburg Bank from 1816 until he died in 1853. Upon Elder’s death, his heirs sold the house to the Rev. Beverly Roberts Waugh. Along with his wife Sarah, Waugh administered the Pennsylvania Female College, a school for young ladies, in the house. The mansion must have been an active place then, with numerous students from LIVE. WORK. PLAY.

Harrisburg’s best families and boarding students, many from southern states. The approaching Civil War and its turmoil, along with the death of Waugh in 1861, caused the school to close. In 1862, a prominent Pennsylvania entrepreneur, politician, and President Lincoln’s first Secretary of War, Simon Cameron, a native of Lancaster County, bought the house, just before leaving that post to become Ambassador to Russia. With his family, Cameron traveled through Europe and sent home furnishings and such items as Italian marble mantles, French mirrors and stained glass from Bavaria. Upon his return, the house was re-designed in the Victorian style, most popular in the second half of the 19th century. While the interior is more elaborate, the exterior may have been spared the ornamentation applied to many older buildings so that Harrisburgers could remember that this was the home of the city’s founder and that owning it brought reflected prestige to Cameron. Here Cameron lived with his family when his presence was required in Harrisburg. He had other residences in both Dauphin and Lancaster counties where he spent much of his time. Being in Harrisburg allowed Cameron to keep an eye on 16

the goings-ons at the Pennsylvania State Capitol a few blocks north. In addition, he was able to entertain his colleagues and greet dignitaries passing through town. He even had a window/ door installed in his office so visitors could come and go without entering the family home. Cameron enjoyed gardening and often had the latest new plant in his garden. There were greenhouses along the side street, and he built a glass solarium where he could take his breakfast each day and look out upon the rose garden. When Cameron died in 1899, the house passed to his daughter Margaretta and then to his grandson Richard Haldeman, the last owner. Before his death in 1933, Haldeman added an alcove on the west side that housed a sitting room below and a spectacular Art Deco bathroom above. By 1941, the house was presented by Cameron heirs to the Historical Society of Dauphin County. Recently the house, a National Historic Landmark, underwent a nearly $500,000 exterior restoration, and more work continues on the interior. A plan for re-designing the gardens popular in the Victorian era is underway. The mansion is furnished with objects dating from the

era of Native American occupation of the site to Colonial, Federal and Victorian times, as well as other furnishings reflecting the entire timespan of the inhabitation of the home by some of Harrisburg’s – and America’s – most prominent families. The Alexander Family Research Library, housed in an adapted 1890 brick stable adjacent to the mansion, contains 3,700 books on local history and genealogical data related to Dauphin County. All sorts of encyclopedias, community histories, genealogies, church, marriage and death information are found here, as well as Civil War regimental histories and books relating to Native Americans, transportation history, local buildings and businesses. The archives, growing for over 130 years, contains 20,000 items in collections of historical records of individuals and families, businesses, agencies, organizations, institutions, schools, churches, military units and other entities located in Dauphin County. The photo archives contains more than one million images dating from the 1850s to the present, including collections from prominent families and photographers, and the Allied Pix newspaper collection of 1952-1994.

The mansion is open for visitation by groups and individuals on a regular schedule throughout the year, and the public rooms are available for rental for meetings, seminars, parties, weddings and receptions. In addition, public programs on topics of local interest are provided monthly. The library is open to the public at a nominal daily charge. There is free parking behind the mansion, located just south of the Harrisburg Hospital at 219 South Front Street, between Mary and Washington streets, overlooking the Susquehanna River and the grave of John Harris, Sr. Current ticket prices, days and hours of operation for both mansion and library and directions are available at www.dauphincountyhistory.org or by calling (717) 233-3462.

the history of ARTICLE BY MELISSA DANG In 1986, there was a dream in the mind of local businessman Mike Trephan. He envisioned an “oldtime” riverboat sailing the waters of Harrisburg and quickly set out raising money to make this dream a reality. In 1988, the Pride of the Susquehanna first sailed and the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society was formed to run it. Throughout the season you can’t miss the sight of this timeless red and white striped boat navigating the Susquehanna. The mission of this riverboat is to attract tourism to Harrisburg, as well as bringing education and the arts to the city through an unforgettable venue.

remarkable stained glass ceiling. The restroom doors and decorative oars are original to the RMS Queen Mary, the famed ocean liner that sailed before and throughout WWII. The Pride is much smaller than the Queen Mary, but a length of 65 feet, a width of 24 feet, and a weight of approximately 100 tons makes her the largest vessel in Central Pennsylvania. In 2016, the Riverboat Society celebrated their one millionth passenger; a landmark that many originally thought impossible. Beyond the glitzy dinner cruises and live music events, the riverboat also broadens its impact through education. The Susquehanna River School, a “floating classroom” for all ages, first sailed in 1998. Aboard, students learn about the History, ecology, and environmental issues affecting the Susquehanna River and its inhabitants. As the sunset dances across the water and the radiant light begins to illuminate the city and the many famous bridges of Harrisburg, tourists and locals alike enjoy the unforgettable sights and sounds of the Central Pennsylvania’s delight. The Pride of the Susquehanna sails the delicate balance between the past and the future.

The Pride is one of the only six remaining authentic riverboats left in America, run only through paddlewheel power. The paddlewheels are used for propulsion and steering—no propellers or jets are needed. This unique craft serves as a gem for the local area, just a few blocks from the Pennsylvania State Capitol. The riverboat’s construction was funded by local residents and businesses. The Pride is a reimagining of the riverboats from the late 1800’s, and that historic charm can be found throughout. Her interior contains a beautifully polished brass and copper interior and a LIVE. WORK. PLAY.

Dedicated to creating healthier downtown communities through partnerships between committed local businesses and residents working together for sustainable downtown growth. Contributed by Pat Craig.

The Pomfret Group began with 4 initial members in 2006, each a neighboring business and property in the first block of West Pomfret Street, historic downtown Carlisle, Pa. This neighborhood is a commercial/ residential mix of second and third floor residential apartments, ground floor offices, restaurants retail specialty boutique shopping in the C1 Historic District. The first block of West Pomfret Street has received its official title of So-Hi Arts District by long time Mayor Kirk Wilson in honoring its work establishing a growing arts center located south of High Street. The removal of a fence between two neighboring business properties became the launch pad for our belief:

We can be stronger together than apart. As both business and residential neighbors, it made financial sense to combine our efforts working together towards the same goals than struggling independently as island entrepreneurs. Bringing innovative ideas to work through hands-on partnerships, The Pomfret Group continues to grow the first block of West Pomfret Street into a neighborhood model supporting filled storefronts and offices, with a waiting list of residents desiring to live on our downtown block. These positive results are no accident but the living proof of dedicated and smart community teamwork. The Pomfret Group received its official non-profit status in 2015 for downtown community revitalization through the arts. Our members are active on many cross over boards and agencies throughout the downtown Carlisle community, working closely with other non-profits. The 72 76

Carlisle Arts Learning Center and The Charles Bruce Foundation are direct beneficiaries of Pomfret Group efforts and events. The Pomfret Group also supports many local charities through group donations for auctions, charity events and members volunteering their time. Our Green Space Initiatives continue to line our street with lovely flower boxes, planters and artworks through partnerships. We know the health and stability of any business is dependent on the strength of its direct financial support. In order to create a strong mixed use block for living and working, we must first create a strong infrastructure of healthy local businesses and involved property owners. Visitors to our photoworthy neighborhood will find filled storefronts behind our beautiful flowers and plantings during the warm months, public seating, charming courtyards and gardens offering alfresco dining at our restaurants and cafes, historic architecture, and charming painted carousel horses up and down the block. Two major ticketed events help fund the development of our block; Art, Music & Wine Walk in April and Art, Music & Beer Crawl in the Fall in Sept-Oct. Tickets for these events can be purchased in advance through our FaceBook page, Shop The Block PA, or on the day of the event on the street. These small neighborhood events provide a fun day for visitors to check out our shops and meet our merchants. All ticket proceeds benefit The Pomfret Group’s revitalization initiatives. For further information regarding The Pomfret Group and our programs, contact President, Pat Craig, by emailing pac.pcs@comcast.net. The Promfret Group can be reached at 30 West Pomfret Street in Carlisle, by calling 717-245-0382 or online at www.facebook.com/shoptheblockpa
