the history of ARTICLE BY MELISSA DANG

In 1986, there was a dream in the mind of local businessman Mike Trephan. He envisioned an “oldtime” riverboat sailing the waters of Harrisburg and quickly set out raising money to make this dream a reality. In 1988, the Pride of the Susquehanna first sailed and the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society was formed to run it. Throughout the season you can’t miss the sight of this timeless red and white striped boat navigating the Susquehanna. The mission of this riverboat is to attract tourism to Harrisburg, as well as bringing education and the arts to the city through an unforgettable venue.

remarkable stained glass ceiling. The restroom doors and decorative oars are original to the RMS Queen Mary, the famed ocean liner that sailed before and throughout WWII. The Pride is much smaller than the Queen Mary, but a length of 65 feet, a width of 24 feet, and a weight of approximately 100 tons makes her the largest vessel in Central Pennsylvania. In 2016, the Riverboat Society celebrated their one millionth passenger; a landmark that many originally thought impossible. Beyond the glitzy dinner cruises and live music events, the riverboat also broadens its impact through education. The Susquehanna River School, a “floating classroom” for all ages, first sailed in 1998. Aboard, students learn about the History, ecology, and environmental issues affecting the Susquehanna River and its inhabitants. As the sunset dances across the water and the radiant light begins to illuminate the city and the many famous bridges of Harrisburg, tourists and locals alike enjoy the unforgettable sights and sounds of the Central Pennsylvania’s delight. The Pride of the Susquehanna sails the delicate balance between the past and the future.

The Pride is one of the only six remaining authentic riverboats left in America, run only through paddlewheel power. The paddlewheels are used for propulsion and steering—no propellers or jets are needed. This unique craft serves as a gem for the local area, just a few blocks from the Pennsylvania State Capitol. The riverboat’s construction was funded by local residents and businesses. The Pride is a reimagining of the riverboats from the late 1800’s, and that historic charm can be found throughout. Her interior contains a beautifully polished brass and copper interior and a LIVE. WORK. PLAY.

Dedicated to creating healthier downtown communities through partnerships between committed local businesses and residents working together for sustainable downtown growth. Contributed by Pat Craig.

The Pomfret Group began with 4 initial members in 2006, each a neighboring business and property in the first block of West Pomfret Street, historic downtown Carlisle, Pa. This neighborhood is a commercial/ residential mix of second and third floor residential apartments, ground floor offices, restaurants retail specialty boutique shopping in the C1 Historic District. The first block of West Pomfret Street has received its official title of So-Hi Arts District by long time Mayor Kirk Wilson in honoring its work establishing a growing arts center located south of High Street. The removal of a fence between two neighboring business properties became the launch pad for our belief:

We can be stronger together than apart. As both business and residential neighbors, it made financial sense to combine our efforts working together towards the same goals than struggling independently as island entrepreneurs. Bringing innovative ideas to work through hands-on partnerships, The Pomfret Group continues to grow the first block of West Pomfret Street into a neighborhood model supporting filled storefronts and offices, with a waiting list of residents desiring to live on our downtown block. These positive results are no accident but the living proof of dedicated and smart community teamwork. The Pomfret Group received its official non-profit status in 2015 for downtown community revitalization through the arts. Our members are active on many cross over boards and agencies throughout the downtown Carlisle community, working closely with 50

other non-profits. The Carlisle Arts Learning Center and The Charles Bruce Foundation are direct beneficiaries of Pomfret Group efforts and events. The Pomfret Group also supports many local charities through group donations for auctions, charity events and members volunteering their time. Our Green Space Initiatives continue to line our street with lovely flower boxes, planters and artworks through partnerships. We know the health and stability of any business is dependent on the strength of its direct financial support. In order to create a strong mixed use block for living and working, we must first create a strong infrastructure of healthy local businesses and involved property owners. Visitors to our photoworthy neighborhood will find filled storefronts behind our beautiful flowers and plantings during the warm months, public seating, charming courtyards and gardens offering alfresco dining at our restaurants and cafÊs, historic architecture, and charming painted carousel horses up and down the block. Two major ticketed events help fund the development of our block; Art, Music & Wine Walk in April and Art, Music & Beer Crawl in the Fall in Sept-Oct. Tickets for these events can be purchased in advance through our Facebook page, Shop The Block PA, or on the day of the event on the street. These small neighborhood events provide a fun day for visitors to check out our shops and meet our merchants. All ticket proceeds benefit The Pomfret Group’s revitalization initiatives. For further information regarding The Pomfret Group and our programs, contact President, Pat Craig, by emailing pac.pcs@comcast.net. The Pomfret Group can be reached at 30 West Pomfret Street in Carlisle, by calling 717-245-0382 or online at www.facebook.com/shoptheblockpa

LOCAL AUTHORS Growing up, author Dan Armstrong dreamed of becoming an FBI agent or a police officer. He hadn’t considered working as a cable guy. He didn’t know it was a profession. But when he was twenty years old, Armstrong began working for his local cable television company and hasn’t looked back. In The Adventures of a Real-Life Cable Guy, Armstrong recounts his experiences with dozens of characters, stories gathered during his thirty-year career—from the hilarious and the horrifying to the happy and the heartbreaking. He’s serviced a milliondollar mansion and a five-hundred dollar trailer on the same day. He’s been in homes where the cats outnumbered the humans. He’s saved a man’s life. And he was the last to see someone alive.

Spero Lappas, JD, PhD, is a writer, lawyer, educator, and artist. He is the author of Conquer Life’s Frontiers: A Philosophy of Personal Fulfillment (available on Amazon.com or at www.alithos.media/shop). Dr. Lappas was among the nation’s youngest attorneys named in the first edition of The Best Lawyers in America. Since then, he has been included in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, and other prominent publications and has been lead counsel in many of Central Pennsylvania’s most important trials. He teaches at the university level and frequently lectures on matters of public interest. 80

Throughout her career, she has balanced working in national politics and for corporate giants with her family, community leadership and outside interests. In 2018, she published her first book - “One Woman’s Camino” - about the magic and metaphor of walking 500 miles across Spain on El Camino de Santiago with 21-year-old daughter. An adventurer at heart and dedicated to making a difference, along the way, Tracy regularly asks herself, “If not, then when?” Tracy speaks to groups about her pilgrimage on El Camino in addition to travel and trekking, getting inspired, leadership action, and the challenges faced by professional women. She can be reached at her website, www.tracypawelski.com

This may be her first book, but Julie Zantopoulos has been writing online for over ten years and was published in a print magazine distributed nationwide in the United States through Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million. Now she runs a well established YouTube channel, Pages and Pens, discussing her love of books and writing. Julie graduated with a degree in Psychology from Cabrini College and lives in the Philadelphia suburbs. She’s a fan of whiskey, the Flyers, and gummi-bears.

Misty Simon always wanted to be a storyteller... preferably behind a Muppet. Animal was number one, followed closely by Sherlock Hemlock...Since that dream didn’t some true, she began writing stories to share her world with readers, one laugh at a time. She knows how to hula, was classically trained to sing opera, and co-wrote her high school Alma Mater.
