Publisher’s Welcome Whether you’re a guest to the Capital Region or have chosen the area as your home, I’m proud to showcase the best shopping, dining, attractions, and personal services to you! For the better part of 20 years, I opened and ran restaurants for small business owners. My mission in creating the Live.Work.Play. family of hardcover, regional guidebooks was to support the hospitality industry I come from and small business as a whole by creating an affordable, more focused platform that gives them the massive exposure they deserve. With that being said, I’m launching all four of our guidebooks in fall and winter of 2020. COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on all of our lives but specifically on small business. I urge you to take advantage of our interactive website and dining guides on pages 7 through 11. They will allow you to shop, book appointments, learn more, or make a reservation with our Live.Work.Play. family of small businesses. As many businesses have modified their hours, it will also give you the opportunity to get up-to-date information on how they’re conducting business. As you explore the beauty of the greater Harrisburg region, please let our Live. Work.Play. family know how you found them. They appreciate it and did, after all, make this beautiful guidebook possible. Enjoy! And be well,

DID KNOW? DIDYOU YOU KNOW ? • The Pennsylvania State Capitol was completed in 1906. The central dome rises to a height of 272 feet and was modeled on that of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, Rome. • 28 miles of the 2,181 mile long Appalachian Trail runs through the Harrisburg/Hershey Region.

• Harrisburg is the location of over a dozen large bridges, many up to a mile long, that cross the Susquehanna River. The Walnut Street Bridge, also known as The People’s bridge, now used only by pedestrians and cyclists, links the downtown and Riverfront Park areas with City Island but goes no further due to missing spans on the western side. Massive flooding resulting from the North American blizzard of 1996 destroyed them.

• The Rockville Bridge in Harrisburg is the longest stone masonry arch railroad bridge in the world. There are 48 arches measuring 70 feet each spanning the Susquehanna River.

// Photo © Paul Vasiliades

• Harrisburg is also known for the Three Mile Island nuclear accident which occurred on March 28, 1979 near Middletown.

• The Pennsylvania Farm Show, the largest free indoor agriculture exposition in the United States, was first held in Harrisburg in 1917 and has been held there every January since then. The venue also hosts an annual outdoor sports show and North America’s biggest auto show featuring new and classic cars.

Christine Goldbeck I approach life and art as an explorer. I am not afraid to make new paths and to experiment with new techniques and tools. My paintings and photographs are not direct renderings. I strive for essence, not likeness. For me, making art is about how the subject makes me feel. It is about sharing feelings and impressions through brushstrokes, colors, designs and textures in my paintings and through the translation of light in my photography.

STUDIO #104

No matter where I roam with subjects and styles, I seem to return to interpretative landscapes and florals because these are the spaces and things with which I love to work. I have a strong connection with nature and prefer to be outdoors, walking, biking, kayaking, painting, really just being.

Tami Bitner

STUDIO #210

Strongly influenced by nature, Tami Bitner’s creative use of transparency, layering, and subtle texture invites viewers to interpret her art through their own experiences and attitudes. Her imaginative use of composition and color create unique works reminiscent of our natural surroundings. As a painter using various mediums, her strong connection to both water and landscapes fuel her passion for working with both encaustic and acrylic paint. Pennsylvania’s distinct seasons and proximity to both mountains and the East coast provide a constant source of inspiration and growth. Art provides the creative escape Tami finds essential to release her adventurous spirit and communicate her emotions. Instagram @tamibitnerart, Facebook.com/TamiBitnerArtist, TamiBitner.com

Susan Bailey Susan Bailey is a mixed media artist living in Harrisburg, PA. After a 30 year career in logistics, budgeting and accounting, she finds the freedom in color and texture exhilarating! Putting down the federal regulations and picking up the color wheel, the rules of composition and experimenting with various papers is life changing! When Susan is not creating, teaching or learning about art, you can find her engaged in her second passion...traveling. Susan’s favorite quote is by Andy Warhol. “Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding make even more art.” www.CommentaryOnColor.com

DID KNOW? DIDYOU YOU KNOW ? • Chris Millard was a student at Elizabethtown Middle School in 1972. Shortly before he lost his three-year battle with cancer, he wrote a story about a great knight who sought out the four diamonds of courage, wisdom, honesty and strength, in order to be released from the grips of an evil sorceress. When Chris died of cancer later that year, his parents Charles and Irma Millard, included his story, “The Four Diamonds” in the package of papers they sent to Herb Kraybill at Hershey Medical Center, who was organizing a fund to help children with cancer. The Four Diamonds fund is now supported by THON, an annual fundraiser organized by students at Penn State University. Students have raised more than $180 million to conquer childhood cancer. • Hummelstown was founded as Fredrickstown in 1762 by a German couple, Frederick and Rosina Hummel. They purchased the land for 200 pounds sterling, then divided the area into building lots, which were sold to German settlers. During the mid 19th century, the Union Canal along Swatara Creek was an important factor in the development of the local economy, promoting trade and transportation. Today 200 pounds would be $255.64

• Milton Hershey built the first modern chocolate factory and model town. He wanted to create a self-reliant community where his employees could reside close to work. Hershey also wanted the community to be a place where his employees could have comfortable homes, an inexpensive public transportation system, a quality public school system, and extensive recreational and cultural opportunities. Mr. Hershey had tickets to board the Titanic, but didn’t follow through with the trip. We’re glad he didn’t! // Photo © George Sheldon / Shutterstock.com

DID KNOW? DIDYOU YOU KNOW ? • New Cumberland was incorporated on March 21, 1831. The historic downtown includes landmarks like the historic West Shore Theater and the yearly Apple Festival, which gathers hundreds of vendors and thousands of visitors. The West Shore Theatre opened on January 20, 1940 with admission of 25 cents for adults, 15 cents for children. The Apple Festival is held annually on the last Saturday in September in New Cumberland Borough Park. • Presented annually by the Mechanicsburg Chamber of Commerce, Jubilee Day is the largest, longest running one day street fair on the east coast attracting up to 70,000 attendees. The annual event features more than 300 vendors from near and far offering food, games, arts & crafts, business information, retail products, amusement rides, and more. There is a children’s area with activities for the very young including a free petting zoo and live entertainment on two stages. Admission is free. • The U.S. Army War College, located at the Carlisle Barracks, prepares high-level military personnel and civilians for strategic leadership responsibilities. Carlisle Barracks is among the oldest U.S. Army installations and the most senior military educational institution in the United States Army. • On the first Saturday in June is Foundry Day, a juried arts and crafts show. It’s held along the Children’s Lake on Front Street in Boiling Springs. Craft makers, organizations, and food vendor booths line the street from the Memorial Clock Tower, along the lake, right up to the walking bridge.

Winnie the Wrinkled Puppy felt different, until she realized that beauty is only skin deep. Eventually, she discovers her own beauty and finally blossoms into a beautiful show dog.

Dedicated to creating healthier downtown communities through partnerships between committed local businesses and residents working together for sustainable downtown growth. Contributed by Pat Craig.

The Pomfret Group began with 4 initial members in 2006, each a neighboring business and property in the first block of West Pomfret Street, historic downtown Carlisle, Pa. This neighborhood is a commercial/ residential mix of second and third floor residential apartments, ground floor offices, restaurants retail specialty boutique shopping in the C1 Historic District. The first block of West Pomfret Street has received its official title of So-Hi Arts District by long time Mayor Kirk Wilson in honoring its work establishing a growing arts center located south of High Street. The removal of a fence between two neighboring business properties became the launch pad for our belief:

We can be stronger together than apart. As both business and residential neighbors, it made financial sense to combine our efforts working together towards the same goals than struggling independently as island entrepreneurs. Bringing innovative ideas to work through hands-on partnerships, The Pomfret Group continues to grow the first block of West Pomfret Street into a neighborhood model supporting filled storefronts and offices, with a waiting list of residents desiring to live on our downtown block. These positive results are no accident but the living proof of dedicated and smart community teamwork. The Pomfret Group received its official non-profit status in 2015 for downtown community revitalization through the arts. Our members are active on many cross over boards and agencies throughout the downtown Carlisle community, working closely with 50

other non-profits. The Carlisle Arts Learning Center and The Charles Bruce Foundation are direct beneficiaries of Pomfret Group efforts and events. The Pomfret Group also supports many local charities through group donations for auctions, charity events and members volunteering their time. Our Green Space Initiatives continue to line our street with lovely flower boxes, planters and artworks through partnerships. We know the health and stability of any business is dependent on the strength of its direct financial support. In order to create a strong mixed use block for living and working, we must first create a strong infrastructure of healthy local businesses and involved property owners. Visitors to our photoworthy neighborhood will find filled storefronts behind our beautiful flowers and plantings during the warm months, public seating, charming courtyards and gardens offering alfresco dining at our restaurants and cafÊs, historic architecture, and charming painted carousel horses up and down the block. Two major ticketed events help fund the development of our block; Art, Music & Wine Walk in April and Art, Music & Beer Crawl in the Fall in Sept-Oct. Tickets for these events can be purchased in advance through our Facebook page, Shop The Block PA, or on the day of the event on the street. These small neighborhood events provide a fun day for visitors to check out our shops and meet our merchants. All ticket proceeds benefit The Pomfret Group’s revitalization initiatives. For further information regarding The Pomfret Group and our programs, contact President, Pat Craig, by emailing pac.pcs@comcast.net. One of the largest museums in the U.S. that portrays the whole story of the American Civil War. OPEN DAILY 1 Lincoln Circle in Reservoir Park HARRISBURG, PA 717.260.1861

Welcome to the National Civil War Museum The sweeping drive through Reservoir Park gives an unparalleled view of the majestic building atop the highest point in Harrisburg ~ The National Civil War Museum. As you approach the entrance to the Museum, you will be struck anew at the Moment of Mercy statue by sculptor Terry Jones, framed by the walk of valor. Take a moment to reflect here on the mercy given to the fallen soldiers by one brave man, Confederate Sergeant Richard Kirkland, during the Battle of Fredricksburg, forever memorialized in bronze. Once inside the Museum, let the grand rotunda’s splendor take you back to a time of sweeping staircases and grand dreams before you enter the Museum galleries and are forever changed by the history you will see. The National Civil War Museum will take you back in time to learn about the American Civil War, where over 620,000 Americans perished. The Museum seeks to tell the whole story of this most troubled chapter in American History while focusing on the issues, the people, and the lives that were affected and contains over 25,000 artifacts. A self-guided tour takes you through 17 galleries illustrating the war and all its consequences, beginning with A House Divided, 1850-1860: a timeline of incidents and issues prior to the Civil War and concludes with Lincoln: War & Remembrance: a retrospective of the war; the martyred President; the role of veterans after the war. In addition to our static displays and artifacts, our award-winning We the People video program, the continuing story of ten characters, lasts about one hour and concludes in the museum’s theater, as the Nation’s joy turns to sorrow in a 16-minute film discussing the end of the war and the assassination of President Lincoln. The vistas that are seen from the Museum grounds and our covered Observatory span four counties and the scenic Susquehanna River narrow. Also visible is the area of Harrisburg that contained Camp Curtin, the largest camp of rendezvous in the North during the war. The capital of Pennsylvania and a major rail hub for men and materials, Harrisburg played a vital role in the Civil War and was threatened by the invasion of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Before you leave the Museum, stop by the gift shop for that special gift and browse our amazing stock of books, some autographed that you won’t find anywhere else.

the history of ARTICLE BY MELISSA DANG

In 1986, there was a dream in the mind of local businessman Mike Trephan. He envisioned an “oldtime” riverboat sailing the waters of Harrisburg and quickly set out raising money to make this dream a reality. In 1988, the Pride of the Susquehanna first sailed and the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society was formed to run it. Throughout the season you can’t miss the sight of this timeless red and white striped boat navigating the Susquehanna. The mission of this riverboat is to attract tourism to Harrisburg, as well as bringing education and the arts to the city through an unforgettable venue.

remarkable stained glass ceiling. The restroom doors and decorative oars are original to the RMS Queen Mary, the famed ocean liner that sailed before and throughout WWII. The Pride is much smaller than the Queen Mary, but a length of 65 feet, a width of 24 feet, and a weight of approximately 100 tons makes her the largest vessel in Central Pennsylvania. In 2016, the Riverboat Society celebrated their one millionth passenger; a landmark that many originally thought impossible. Beyond the glitzy dinner cruises and live music events, the riverboat also broadens its impact through education. The Susquehanna River School, a “floating classroom” for all ages, first sailed in 1998. Aboard, students learn about the History, ecology, and environmental issues affecting the Susquehanna River and its inhabitants. As the sunset dances across the water and the radiant light begins to illuminate the city and the many famous bridges of Harrisburg, tourists and locals alike enjoy the unforgettable sights and sounds of the Central Pennsylvania’s delight. The Pride of the Susquehanna sails the delicate balance between the past and the future.

The Pride is one of the only six remaining authentic riverboats left in America, run only through paddlewheel power. The paddlewheels are used for propulsion and steering—no propellers or jets are needed. This unique craft serves as a gem for the local area, just a few blocks from the Pennsylvania State Capitol. The riverboat’s construction was funded by local residents and businesses. The Pride is a reimagining of the riverboats from the late 1800’s, and that historic charm can be found throughout. Her interior contains a beautifully polished brass and copper interior and a LIVE. WORK. PLAY.

Overdue for a get away?

Why you should use a travel agent to create the perfect, most affordable one, just for you. Often you get more than you expected for the same price. Even if your travel specialist charges a fee, the value you receive will be more than what you paid. They get perks from trusted travel partners and pass them along to you. They do research to find you the perfect vacation and are invested in their clients’ happiness and satisfaction. Their end goal is to make sure that every trip is packed full of positive lifelong memories. They listen to what you want, suggest and adjust when needed. Travel specialists also perform a function that is invaluable when things don’t go quite right, like getting you in or out during earthquakes or erupting volcanoes. They add a human element instead of an anonymous voice on the other end of the phone or live chat, and will sit on hold with short-staffed airlines and resorts to make your vacation perfect. Travel specialists are with you before, during and after your trip.

s e i r o m e M is MAKING them!

The Best Thing About

Ready to write your own travel story, one that will leave you with priceless lifelong memories? As a boutique travel agency, we will custom tailor your vacation from start to finish, by getting to know your unique travel personality and offering that perfect destination fit. And the best part? We take care of planning all the details, with no extra cost to you! Whether it’s poolside lounging, a visit to the Magic Kingdom, sipping wine as you sojourn down the romantic Danube, or non-stop adventure you seek - together, we’ll turn that dream into reality. With more than 85 years, collectively among us, we exist to enrich lives, through travel … one memory at a time. Specializing in Customized Group Travel

Your adventure awaits...

Located along the Anclote River where it intersects the Gulf of Mexico, Tarpon Springs is a rich mixture of culture, customs, and families. Its waterfront is a working seaport and shopping district with the unmistakable feel of a Grecian fishing village. Its downtown is a showcase of proud historic buildings and homes from the gracious Victorian era. It’s an unlikely blend of histories, and one you’ll find only in Tarpon Springs, Pinellas County’s oldest city. 86

| LIVE. WORK. PLAY.

Past Indian history in this beautiful coastal community predates the arrival of the first settlers in the early 1800’s. Soon after, the advent of the railroad and the building of the Anclote Key Lighthouse brought many positive changes to the area. The town’s Victorian influences stem from the late 1800’s to about 1905, when the seaside village became a playground for wealthy Northerners. These seasonal residents built luxurious estates along Spring Bayou. Soon Tarpon Springs gained fame as one of the great health centers and winter resorts of the time.

Two Cultures, One City... Tarpon Springs

Rich sponge beds, discovered in the 1880’s, spawned a flourishing new industry. In 1905, young sponge divers were recruited from the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. The sponge industry thrived, as did the Greek community, and the town’s focus changed. Some of the Greek immigrants who came to the area continue their traditional trade of sponge diving. Today Tarpon Springs is a showcase of both cultures, from its vintage Victorian era mansions and buildings to its lively Greek traditions and community.

Experience the flavor of Greece and the excitement of an authentic working waterfront on the Sponge Docks. Visit authentic Greek restaurants and bakeries, sponge diving and sightseeing tour boats, unique shops, antique shops and art galleries, and the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, home of the largest Epiphany celebration in the Western Hemispheres – No Passport Required!

one sun STUDIO

ABOUT The inspiration for One Sun Studio was generated from a hobby and a way to connect with my autistic son, and incredible boy who early in life was quiet, emotional and had a tough time expressing himself. During one of our trips he asked to use my spare camera. I gave him a crash course and he absorbed it all. During the process of pulling the photos from his camera, I realized that a connection has been made allowing me to see through his eyes and into his mind, a destination almost impossible to reach.

Dedicated to ending hunger for more than 30 years. Serving 27 counties, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the largest charitable food distribution organization in central Pennsylvania. The Food Bank solicits, inventories and distributes food and other donated products to more than 1,000 programs and partner agencies (food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, senior centers, children’s programs, etc.) that directly serve people struggling with hunger.

“Feeding my kids is top priority for me. The Food Bank takes a lot of stress off me as to how I’m going to pay bills and feed them.” - Christine, Columbia County

In 2019, the Food Bank distributed more than 11 million pounds of produce and provided more than 45 million meals! In central Pennsylvania, one in ten residents, including senior citizens, working families and children, veterans and current military personnel, struggle with hunger and may not know where they’ll find their next meal. That number includes one in six children who do not have reliable access to three nutritious meals each day. Whether it’s by advocating, educating, making a donation, or volunteering, YOU can help the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank make a difference and join us in our mission of fighting hunger, improving lives and strengthening communities.
