Jelaina Jones

Jelaina Jones grew up a voracious reader and lover of all things fantasy. She believes that magic is real and is still bummed she never received her Hogwarts letter. When not reading, attending book clubs at her favorite local bookstore, or rearranging bookshelves, she’s writing, cooking, or working as a Navy civilian. What she does for the Navy, no one quite knows, as she would have to kill anyone who found out, (not really). She shares her Central Pennsylvania home with her two crazy cat familars, one hyperactive dog and one gamer boyfriend. Her first novel, a second chance romance, is set to be published in 2022. 26

Mouse

Mouse the Bookstore Cat and his siblings were born at Cupboard Maker Books in April 2020. He was chosen from the litter to stay and become a new addition to the store’s bookstore cats. Mouse goes on adventures with his bookstore family throughout Central Pennsylvania and shares photos of them on Cupboard Maker Books’ social media platforms. He is also an author of Mouse The Bookstore Kitten: The Beginning, Mouse’s Adventures: Year One, and Primce Fluffytail Chases A Dragon.

Michelle Haring

Michelle Haring is a bookstore owner turned author. She started her book career in 1987 and has owned Cupboard Maker Books for over 20 years. Because she has been so immersed in the bookstore and publishing world, she decided she didn’t want to set her cozy mystery series within one. Thus, Death Motors was born. When Michelle isn’t writing, you can find her reading and sorting through the plethora of books at Cupboard Maker Books. She’s found all sorts of items in books, but has yet to find herself living in a cozy mystery scenario. Death Of A Salewoman is the first book in the Death Motors series. You can learn more at DeathMotors.com

Cupboard Maker Books

Cupboard Maker Books is 6,500 square feet with ample parking, and is located right on Routes 11/15 in Enola, PA. One of the largest museums in the U.S. that portrays the whole story of the American Civil War. OPEN DAILY 1 Lincoln Circle in Reservoir Park HARRISBURG, PA 717.260.1861

www.nationalcivilwarmuseum.org 50

| LIVE. WORK. PLAY.

TH

Welcome to the National Civil War Museum The sweeping drive through Reservoir Park gives an unparalleled view of the majestic building atop the highest point in Harrisburg ~ The National Civil War Museum. As you approach the entrance to the Museum, you will be struck anew at the Moment of Mercy statue by sculptor Terry Jones, framed by the walk of valor. Take a moment to reflect here on the mercy given to the fallen soldiers by one brave man, Confederate Sergeant Richard Kirkland, during the Battle of Fredricksburg, forever memorialized in bronze. Once inside the Museum, let the grand rotunda’s splendor take you back to a time of sweeping staircases and grand dreams before you enter the Museum galleries and are forever changed by the history you will see. The National Civil War Museum will take you back in time to learn about the American Civil War, where over 620,000 Americans perished. The Museum seeks to tell the whole story of this most troubled chapter in American History while focusing on the issues, the people, and the lives that were affected and contains over 25,000 artifacts. A self-guided tour takes you through 17 galleries illustrating the war and all its consequences, beginning with A House Divided, 1850-1860: a timeline of incidents and issues prior to the Civil War and concludes with Lincoln: War & Remembrance: a retrospective of the war; the martyred President; the role of veterans after the war. In addition to our static displays and artifacts, our award-winning We the People video program, the continuing story of ten characters, lasts about one hour and concludes in the museum’s theater, as the Nation’s joy turns to sorrow in a 16-minute film discussing the end of the war and the assassination of President Lincoln. The vistas that are seen from the Museum grounds and our covered Observatory span four counties and the scenic Susquehanna River narrow. Also visible is the area of Harrisburg that contained Camp Curtin, the largest camp of rendezvous in the North during the war. The capital of Pennsylvania and a major rail hub for men and materials, Harrisburg played a vital role in the Civil War and was threatened by the invasion of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Before you leave the Museum, stop by the gift shop for that special gift and browse our amazing stock of books, some autographed that you won’t find anywhere else.

CARLISLE THEATRE Opened in 1939, and originally known as the Comerford, it was the premier movie palace in the area. Being the first air conditioned building in town and able to seat nearly 1000 people, the Comerford was hugely popular with patrons of all ages. After falling into disrepair in the 80’s, it was renovated and reopened as the Carlisle Theatre in 1993. Now hosting movies, live shows and even ghost tours!

This site originally held a stone Methodist church, built in 1827, that was used for Dickinson Commencement services. It was replaced in 1877 with the Centenary Church in recognition of America’s Centenary celebration. It was sold in 1889 and housed many businesses including a pharmacy, retro clothing and flower store. The building was ravaged by fire in 1999, and was reinvented to include modern apartments and retail spaces while maintaining its historic exterior. 3

OLD PUBLIC GRAVEYARD Originally deeded to Carlisle as a public cemetery, the first occupants were interred here in the 1750’s—however the most notable, Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley, a.k.a. Molly Pitcher, was buried here in 1832. She didn't receive a recognizable headstone until 1876, the flag and cannon were added in 1905, and finally with the statue in 1916.

After the death of his wife, Stephan Duncan sold the house to his brother-in-law, Benjamin Stiles. The grandest in town when it was built, the formerly red brick home still garners significant attention from onlookers. 8

Established in 1900 by the heirs of J.H. Bosler who wanted to “give the young men in town something to do” the Bosler Library is an architectural jewel designed, like many at the time, to resemble a Greek temple. In 1905 the library maintained a collection of over 4,400 books and rare manuscripts. Today it ranks as one of the most visited libraries in the county.

Known as the first college in the United States of America, Dickinson College was created in 1783 by Philadelphia physician Benjamin Rush. Centered around the “Old West” building, built in 1793, Dickinson always had a place in history. Tragically the original Old West was destroyed in a fire soon after completion. Benjamin Latrobe, the architect responsible for the U.S. Capitol, volunteered to create a new design for “West College.” Since then, it served as classrooms, a Civil War hospital and now, administrative offices.

Located in Memorial Park, Hope Station used to be known as Passenger Station in 1900’s. The original station was constructed in 1936 after the station on West High was removed. Thousands of people showed up to witness the first train arrive at the inauguration of the new station on October 16th, 1936. Currently the non-profit community group Hope Station resides there.

Built in 1846, after an arson fire destroyed the building that contained the earlier courthouse, town hall, and the firefighting apparatus. NEW COURT HOUSE The new courthouse came into existence amidst contentious debate over the original intention of the land. Deeded to Carlisle by descendants of the Penn family for the purpose of a public market “in perpetuity.” Various buildings existed on this location until a prominent Victorian structure was built in 1878. The advocates for the new courthouse fought for a modern courthouse. In 2009, community members were able to bring back an outdoor market known as Farmers on the Square which is open on Wednesday afternoons.

Originally the site of the home of Judge Hamilton, this property has seen multiple iterations and reinventions. After a brutal murder, Hamilton’s home was razed, and the Orpheum theatre was built. The eastern section of Memorial Park is Lincoln Cemetery, a segregated cemetery, where Carlisle’s Black community buried their loved ones. In the 1960s, residents requested that the borough take ownership of the cemetery. The space was subsequently made into a park. Fleta Mae Jordan petitioned the court and when the conversion was complete, the Jordan family headstone was the only headstone remaining.

Imagine from 1838-1936 a giant steam locomotive stopping here to provide transportation for hundreds of travelers, 24 times a day on this street. The station was originally across the street as part of the Mansion House hotel. In 1891, the train station at 101 W. High Street was built and acted as the welcoming front door for visitors to Carlisle.

Your adventure awaits...

Located along the Anclote River where it intersects the Gulf of Mexico, Tarpon Springs is a rich mixture of culture, customs, and families. Its waterfront is a working seaport and shopping district with the unmistakable feel of a Grecian fishing village. Its downtown is a showcase of proud historic buildings and homes from the gracious Victorian era. It’s an unlikely blend of histories, and one you’ll find only in Tarpon Springs, Pinellas County’s oldest city. 66

| LIVE. WORK. PLAY.

Past Indian history in this beautiful coastal community predates the arrival of the first settlers in the early 1800’s. Soon after, the advent of the railroad and the building of the Anclote Key Lighthouse brought many positive changes to the area. The town’s Victorian influences stem from the late 1800’s to about 1905, when the seaside village became a playground for wealthy Northerners. These seasonal residents built luxurious estates along Spring Bayou. Soon Tarpon Springs gained fame as one of the great health centers and winter resorts of the time.

Welcome Center 1 N. Pinellas Avenue Monday–Friday, 10 am–5 pm Visitors’ Center 100 Dodecanese Boulevard 7 days, 10:30 am–3:30 pm 727-937-6109 TarponSpringsChamber.org

Two Cultures, One City... Tarpon Springs Rich sponge beds, discovered in the 1880’s, spawned a flourishing new industry. In 1905, young sponge divers were recruited from the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. The sponge industry thrived, as did the Greek community, and the town’s focus changed. Some of the Greek immigrants who came to the area continue their traditional trade of sponge diving. Today Tarpon Springs is a showcase of both cultures, from its vintage Victorian era mansions and buildings to its lively Greek traditions and community.

Experience the flavor of Greece and the excitement of an authentic working waterfront on the Sponge Docks. Visit authentic Greek restaurants and bakeries, sponge diving and sightseeing tour boats, unique shops, antique shops and art galleries, and the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, home of the largest Epiphany celebration in the Western Hemispheres – No Passport Required!

Where I Live

A first geography book for young children in the State of Pennsylvania

Teachers, parents, and grandparents all agree that young children today are missing the vocabulary and language of basic geography. Ask a child what “state” they live in, their response might be the “United States”!

Debra Hervitz is a retired teacher, reading specialist, mother and grandmother. She is from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and is a graduate from Pennsylvania State University. She wrote this geography book because it is a fun picture book that gives children the language and other skills to understand and express where they live in this world.
