Gettysburg
DID YOU KNOW?
• The Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 1–July 3, 1863), was the largest battle of the American Civil War as well as the largest battle ever fought in North America, involving around 85,000 men in the Union’s Army of the Potomac under Major General George Gordon Meade and approximately 75,000 in the Confederacy’s Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by General Robert Edward Lee.
• President Abraham Lincoln was the second speaker on the day that the cemetery at Gettysburg was dedicated. His Gettysburg Address is only 272 words, but is considered one of the most important speeches in American history.
• Gettysburg Eddie (Eddie Plank) is from Gettysburg. He was a pitcher for the Philadelphia Athletics and was the first left-handed pitcher to win 300 games.
• John Studebaker was born in Gettysburg. If you know classic cars, the name Studebaker may sound familiar to you. He would go on to become one of America’s foremost early car manufacturers and one of the largest until 1954 when he merged with Packard.

Our MUSEUM tells the story of Gettysburg’s civilians & features artifacts, 3-D & hands-on exhibits & the popular Cellar Experience—placing YOU in the shoes of Gettysburg’s townspeople during the battle.
The award-winning, American Battlefield Trust-produced ANIMATED MAP offers the best ORIENTATION of the Battle of Gettysburg.
Gettysburg’s Heritage Center answers one of Gettysburg’s top questions!
Many people ask one question about their Gettysburg trip— “Where do I start”? Gettysburg is so rich in history and other activities that it can be overwhelming to answer that question. But the Gettysburg Heritage Center has made it easy.
“We are here to be YOUR Gettysburg headquarters,” said Heritage Center President Tammy Myers. “We offer personal attention and top-rated customer service, and we can answer your questions, get you oriented to the Battle of Gettysburg and get you on a tour.”
Located in Gettysburg’s vibrant Steinwehr Avenue neighborhood, within walking distance to the Gettysburg National Cemetery, key battlefield locations and many hotels and restaurants, the Heritage Center offers a museum, an animated map for orientation, many tour options, a popular gift store and book shop, special events throughout the year and visitor information. Ample parking is available, and group rates and programs are available.
Museum
The Heritage Center Museum tells the story of the Battle of Gettysburg from a different perspective—from that of Gettysburg’s civilians who struggled before, during and after the battle that remains to this day the largest on the continent. The historic tales come to life with modern exhibits that use 3-D technology and interactives, making the stories relevant for people of all ages. The popular Cellar Experience allows visitors to enter a replica basement, sit in a darkened room, and, through sound, light and small videos, immerse themselves in the lives of civilians who were forced to shelter in their own homes as the warring armies moved through the town.
Animated Map
The award-winning American Battlefield Trust-produced animated map helps visitors orient themselves to the battle, which took place over three days from July 1-3, 1863, and is considered a major turning point in the Civil War and in our nation’s history. Even return visitors will welcome this overview and review of how the battle happened. It is the perfect preparation for a battlefield tour.
Tours
The battlefield at Gettysburg is a large place, covering 6,000 square acres and 30 miles of roads. But the Heritage Center is your hub for tours of all kinds—all of which can be booked in advance via the Center’s website. Many can be booked upon arrival, based on availability.
Options include:
• Licensed Battlefield Guides—Gettysburg’s renowned guides are supervised by the National Park Service, and each guide studies for years before passing an extensive written and oral exam. Private tours with guides—in visitors’ own vehicles—are often touted as the best way to see the battlefield.
• Horse and Carriage—Horseback tours can be booked through the Heritage Center, and carriage rides leave from the center, allowing visitors to have a scenic, “pace of history” tour.
• Scoot Coupes and Electric Bikes—a new and unique way to see the battlefield, these mini cars and electric bikes are road ready, and Licensed Guided tour options are available.
• Bus—Bus tours can be arranged and can feature a Licensed Battlefield Guide.
Gift Store and Book Shop
The center’s large museum store offers special gifts and souvenirs, and the extensive book shop is often referred to as the best in town.
The Gettysburg Heritage Center offers visitors a headquarters to ensure an exciting visit. Details can be found at www.gettysburgmuseum.com/LWP or by calling 717-334-6245. Find the Heritage Center on Facebook and Instagram @GettysburgHeritageCenter.

The Lincoln Highway was our nation’s first coast-to-coast highway, stretched from New York City to San Francisco in 1913. It’s the one route that changed America forever – marking the birth of popular American tourism – vacationing by automobile. Early motorists traveled to see where history was made, to experience the beauty of nature, to learn about regional differences and to have outdoor fun...the same reasons people take automobile vacations today!
