DID YOU KNOW ?

Tampa Bay

• On January 1, 1914, the world’s first scheduled passenger airline service took off, operating between St. Petersburg and Tampa. The St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line was a short-lived endeavor at only four months but it paved the way for today’s daily transcontinental flights. • José Martí Park, located at 1303 East 8th Avenue in Ybor City, is technically Cuban soil. The 0.14 acre tract of land has been owned by the Republic of Cuba since 1956. The park is a tribute to José Martí, a 19th-century Cuban freedom fighter from Havana. Known as a patriot, writer, poet, lawyer and orator, Martí’s ideas and actions were a universal inspiration for the Cuban people. • Ybor City takes its name from Vicente Martinez Ybor, who started things rolling with a cigar making business in 1850s Cuba. In 1885, after one Cuban revolution too many erupted, he bought 40 sandy acres near Tampa and turned it into the cigar capital of the world. In 1929, the factory at Ybor City rolled approximately 500 million cigars! • Dunedin is the oldest town in Pinellas County and began as a remote settlement in 1852. It was originally named Jonesbor. Two Scottish immigrants renamed the settlement to Dunedin in 1882. The name Dunedin comes from the Sottish-Gaelic form of Edinburgh, Scotland, Dùn Èideann. • Safety Harbor used to be home to a sizable Native American population. Philippe Park pays homage to this with its monument to the Tocabaga tribe. The Temple Mound is historically recognized as having once been used for religious purposes by the tribe. Founded in 1948, the park is the oldest in the county. It spans some 122 acres. • Tiki Gardens was a South Seas Polynesian theme park in Indian Shores. The park, which opened in 1964, was closed in the 1980s. It was sold to Pinellas County in 1990 and was turned into a public beach access parking lot. Although the Tiki Gardens were a big part of tourism in Pinellas County, the only thing left is the sign at the entrance letting visitors know that they’ve arrived at the Tiki Gardens Park Beach Access. • Caladesi and Honeymoon Island used to be one island, until a hurricane separated the two in 1921.

invented IN FLORIDA KEY LIME PIE

The key lime pie has been traced back to the early 20th century. Its exact origins are unknown, but the first formal mention of key lime pie as a recipe may have been made by William Curry, a ship salvager and Key West’s first millionaire; his cook, “Aunt Sally”, made the pie for him. Some people believe that Aunt Sally simply modified the recipe for lemon icebox cake and used key limes instead of lemons because both recipes require sweetened condensed milk and citrus juice.

INCANDESCENT LIGHT BULB?

The incandescent light bulb was invented in Florida? This one is only partially true. Thomas Edison’s primary residence was in New Jersey during most of the time that he was inventing the incandescent light bulb, but he spent his winters at his home in Fort Myers. He worked on many of his 1,093 patented inventions there. So Florida gets some of the credit.

SUNSCREEN

One of the first popular sunscreen products was invented for the United States military by Florida airman and pharmacist Benjamin Green in 1944. This came about because of the hazards of sun overexposure to soldiers in the Pacific tropics at the height of World War II.

MIRANDA RIGHTS

You know the part of the Miranda rights where they say “If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you”? Clarence Earl Gideon was a man with an eighthgrade education who ran away from home when he was in middle school. He spent much of his early adult life as a drifter, spending time in and out of prisons for nonviolent crimes. Gideon was charged with breaking and entering with the intent to commit a misdemeanor, which is a felony under Florida law. We can thank this unlikely hero for public defenders.

FROZEN CONCENTRATED ORANGE JUICE

Frozen concentrated orange juice was invented by University of Florida’s Citrus Research and Education Center. In the 1940’s, C.D. Atkins was asked by the Florida Citrus Commission to improve the quality of processed orange products, to help produce better juice for the armed forces, and at the same time improve the efficiency of Florida’s orange crop.

COLD-AIR PROCESS OF REFRIGERATION

John Gorrie (born October 3, 1803, Charleston, SC died June 16, 1855, Apalachicola, FL) was the American physician who discovered the cold-air process of refrigeration as the result of experiments to lower the temperature of fever patients by cooling hospital rooms. In 1842, Gorrie designed and built an aircooling apparatus for treating yellow-fever patients.

GATORADE

Gatorade was formulated in 1965 by researchers at the University of Florida in an effort to help the then-struggling Florida Gators football team.

Bondo putty is an automotive body filler; a twopart mix of talc and plastic. It was introduced in 1955 and developed by World War II veteran and automotive repair shop owner Robert Merton Spink of Miami. Commonly used as a term to describe any type of automotive repair putty, the word Bondo is actually a trademarked name of a product from the company 3M (Minnesota Mining Manufacturing).

NEW SUPERCAPACITOR

The new supercapacitor was invented in FSU’s AeroPropulsion, Mechatronics and Energy Center (AME), and Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS) by Jim P. Zheng, a Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering professor. The new technology addresses current supercapacitor weaknesses that limit their effective use compared to traditional rechargeable battery technology.

ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT OF 1973

Nathaniel Reed, American environmentalist and political aide from Florida who served as an environmental adviser to Florida Governor Claude R. Kirk Jr. in the 1960s, co-wrote the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Among the first species protected were the Florida panther, manatees, and alligators.

NASCAR

The driving force behind the establishment of NASCAR was William “Bill” France Sr. (1909-1992), a mechanic and auto-repair shop owner from Washington, DC, who in the mid-1930s moved to Daytona Beach. The Daytona area was a gathering spot for racing enthusiasts, and France became involved in racing cars and promoting races. France felt there was a need for a governing body to sanction and promote racing. He gathered members of the racing community to discuss the idea, and NASCAR was born, with its official incorporation in February 1948. France served as NASCAR’s first president and played a key role in shaping its development in the sport’s early decades.

The Center in the daytime is bands practicing, art students creating, and camps full of kids.

If you only know the Center when the sun is shining, or when the moon is out… you are missing out on the dance!

At night, the Center is live music, theatre, and art receptions.

CarrollwoodCenter.org /(813) 922-8167 ENTERTAINMENT • COMMUNITY EVENTS • CLASSES & WORKSHOPS • GALLERY 14“Night PLAY. by Michael Young. Photography by Craig Nowicke | LIVE. for WORK. Day” sculpture

Let the magic begin. That was our message when we opened in March 2008. After years of preparations, the only thing left to do was to open our front doors and let the magic happen. The first spark of magic for the Center began several years prior through a unique partnership between Hillsborough County and the Friends of Carrollwood Cultural Center (FCCC), a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents through arts and culture. Located in the heart of Carrollwood Village, the campus includes a 26,000 sq. ft. main building complete with a stage, dance floor, art studios, computer lab, and conference rooms as well as a sister building, The Studio, with additional space for classes, performances, room rentals, and gallery displays. However, when we opened in 2008, there was no gallery. No outdoor sculpture. No sound system. No coffee bar. No monthly market. What we did have was a supportive county, community, and dedicated volunteers led by a spirited board of directors.

We were in a beautiful building surrounded by stark arcticwhite walls with one painting on display, perched on a bronze easel in our lobby. Over the years, our gallery has grown to include several mini-galleries, with proper gallery lighting, allowing us to exhibit several shows at one time. When we first opened, you could eat off the art room floor. Clean without a speck of paint on them. After years of hosting visual art classes, the dried paint on the floor has turned into a work of art of its own. Even the ceilings are painted! Completed pieces created by young campers, making the Center a place for arts education, from the ground up – literally. For more than a decade, the art rooms, pottery studio, music lab, and dance studio have hosted students of all ages and skill levels, led by an impressive team of instructors. Shortly after opening, we received a Shigeru Kawai grand piano, which was beautifully displayed on the wooden stage of our Main Theatre. The stage was unmarked, showing no signs of life. Now our stage resembles that of a working theatre, with markings that tell stories as entertaining as the performers who perform here, such as jazz musicians, thespians, dancers, tribute bands, and classical musicians.

We always knew that affordable rental space was needed for groups and special events in north Tampa. We have had the opportunity to host many special events: 50th-anniversary parties, office parties, birthday parties, memorial services, piano recitals, music festivals, outdoor markets...we have even hosted a bodybuilding contest! Our opening team had four people. Now our staff is 15 strong. Hardworking people who, with the help of the community, have built every aspect of the Center. The Carrollwood Cultural Center is much more than a building. It’s the place where strangers become friends and friends become family. Above all, it’s a place where a community came together to prove—and continue to prove– that ordinary citizens can, through their labors and generosity, determine the culture of the place in which they live out their lives. Paul Berg, Executive Director Carrollwood Cultural Center

Florida’s history stretches back to the last glacial period, with indigenous people settling the state over 14,000 years ago. European discovery and settlement by the Spanish occurred in the 16th century, nearly a hundred years before the English founded Jamestown.

Your adventure awaits...

Located along the Anclote River where it intersects the Gulf of Mexico, Tarpon Springs is a rich mixture of culture, customs, and families. Its waterfront is a working seaport and shopping district with the unmistakable feel of a Grecian fishing village. Its downtown is a showcase of proud historic buildings and homes from the gracious Victorian era. It’s an unlikely blend of histories, and one you’ll find only in Tarpon Springs, Pinellas County’s oldest city. 36

| LIVE. WORK. PLAY.

Past Indian history in this beautiful coastal community predates the arrival of the first settlers in the early 1800’s. Soon after, the advent of the railroad and the building of the Anclote Key Lighthouse brought many positive changes to the area. The town’s Victorian influences stem from the late 1800’s to about 1905, when the seaside village became a playground for wealthy Northerners. These seasonal residents built luxurious estates along Spring Bayou. Soon Tarpon Springs gained fame as one of the great health centers and winter resorts of the time.

Two Cultures, One City... Tarpon Springs

Rich sponge beds, discovered in the 1880’s, spawned a flourishing new industry. In 1905, young sponge divers were recruited from the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. The sponge industry thrived, as did the Greek community, and the town’s focus changed. Some of the Greek immigrants who came to the area continue their traditional trade of sponge diving. Today Tarpon Springs is a showcase of both cultures, from its vintage Victorian era mansions and buildings to its lively Greek traditions and community.

Experience the flavor of Greece and the excitement of an authentic working waterfront on the Sponge Docks. Visit authentic Greek restaurants and bakeries, sponge diving and sightseeing tour boats, unique shops, antique shops and art galleries, and the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, home of the largest Epiphany celebration in the Western Hemispheres – No Passport Required!

Inside, she feels lost and empty.

It’s not always easy to tell when someone is going through a crisis. The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay is there 24 hours a day as the community’s gateway to help, hope and healing. Last year alone, we responded to over 165,000 requests for help from people who were experiencing life’s challenges.

CALL 2•1•1 Be Heard.

HOPE & HEALING

FLORIDA RECOVERY SCHOOLS OF TAMPA BAY, INC. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office Opioid Overdose Assessment, fifteen children ages 10-17 years old overdosed between January 2020-July 2020. Two of those young people lost their lives. Many young people are silently screaming for help through their destructive decisions and criminal behaviors to escape the hurt from childhood trauma and pain. Overdose deaths are preventable and drug addiction can be treated with individualized recovery plans and special support in a healing centered environment. Together, we will save lives!

Florida Recovery Schools of Tampa Bay, Inc. aims to be a beacon of hope and provide wraparound services to our students ages 14-19 years old. Students will receive a tuition-free hybrid education and unique opportunity to lead substance free lives. Our school is an incredible asset and of great benefit to our children, families, and community. This non-profit school will collaborate with our existing public schools to unite and enrich students' lives. We seek to create a community of learners that ignites academic passion in the individual as well as fosters positive social connections between students sharing a recovery journey. The curriculum at our school is designed specifically to meet the individual needs of our students, with an emphasis on issues that research indicates often arise in students with addiction, such as ADHD and other co-occurring disorders. When students feel connected to their school community, they want to be there, and the number of suspensions goes down as well as many benefits to the individual, family, and community.
