Mission

The mission of The Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay is to encourage philanthropy among women of all ages and backgrounds, and support and expand opportunities for all women and girls.

It’s Our Goal To...

support opportunities that hold the promise of encouragement, self-esteem and leadership for local women and girls.

You Can Help

Give to the Women’s Fund and be a Girlfriend in the truest sense of the word. Big or small, your contribution is an investment in local women and girls, helping them to achieve, to compete, to realize their dreams and someday, to help and inspire others in their own right.

The Seed Was Planted

In Green Bay, the Women’s Fund seed was planted in 1995 by a group of community-minded people. The fund has been quietly granting small amounts of money for over 10 years. Thank you to those in our community who had the vision: Michael Bina, Jan Campbell, BJ Cassidy, Kathy Cawman, Vivi Dilweg, Lise Gammeltoft, Flo Garland, John Gilman, Connie Greenawald, Tita Plouff, Julie-Ann Kress, Barbara Lawton, Eileen Littig, Sharon Lutsey, Sandy Mathy, Paul Mongin, Bonnie Platten, Peter Platten, Sheri Prosser, Susan Reinfeldt, Mary Schaupp, Joan Schaupp, Kay Sonneland, Michael Troyer, Ron VanDenHeuvel, Jane VanLanen, Julie Vidani, and Terry Wickman. In 2005 an energetic group was ready to grow this fund and make an even greater impact on the needs of women and girls. We are making great progress!

Power of the Purse

A Letter from the President September 17, 2009

Welcome to the Fifth Annual Power of the Purse celebration, and thank you so much for joining us. We’re here to encourage giving among women, and to expand opportunities for women and girls. The Power of the Purse is one of the major fund raising events for the Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay. Your presence here today, as well as your participation in the auction, raffle, and donation opportunities, will help us all achieve our mission. So how have we been doing in our quest to achieve our mission? Prior to 2009 we have granted $65k to several local organizations that align with our vision. The stories are inspiring – this tribute book will bring the impact of grants we have made this year to life. Together we have changed lives. It’s wonderful to be part of an organization that makes such a difference. Help us continue to build a confident sparkle in women and girls throughout the Greater Green Bay Area – those who donate and those who gain hope from our grants. Make a donation to support our efforts today. Our new tagline says it all: We are … Empowering Women Inspiring Girls! This year we are updating our website so you can donate via major credit card on-line. Check www.womensfundgb.org to see when that capability is available. I’d like to give special thanks to Sue Porath of Navigator Planning Group, and Jeanne Stangel of UWGB for their direction and guidance as co-chairs of this year’s event. Efforts like theirs keep 800 women (and a few good men) looking forward to this event each year. Margaret Mead once said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” If Margaret Mead were here today, she’d look to you as a proof. Thank you for your wisdom and generosity.

Grant Recipients

Women’s Fund Grants

The Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay benefits from a partnership with the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation. This year the Women’s Fund was able to extend its discretionary resources because generous donor clients of the Community Foundation gave additional funds to support a number of the following projects.

Applicant: Boys and Girls Club of Green Bay Project: Girls Torch Club Summary: The Girls Torch Clubs of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater

Green Bay provide adolescent females meaningful and exciting opportunities to develop character and leadership. In small groups, girls age 10-13 plan their own activities, including a service project that addresses community needs of concern to the girls. Learning of their own leadership and philanthropic potential, amidst giggles and friendships, the Girls Torch Clubs help girls become more confident of their own futures and capabilities. With the help of the Greater Green Bay Women’s Fund, this program will serve six dozen girls.

Applicant: Chappell Elementary School of Green Bay Project: Girls Circle Summary: While so many girls struggle with low self-esteem, Green Bay’s Chappell Elementary School has developed two single-gender classrooms uniquely designed to improve student achievement, develop leadership skills, and expand student aspirations. A Greater Green Bay Women’s Fund grant will provide career exploration opportunities, a mother/daughter book club, experiences in the arts and leadership curriculum to the fourth and fifth grade girls of this program, of which 76% receive free or reduced lunch. Daring to dream, having the strength to maintain those dreams, and developing the skills to achieve dreams, matters in the lives of young girls. Applicant: United Hmong and Asian American Community Center Project: Hmong American Women’s Leadership Project Summary: Hmong women traditionally have had fewer opportunities

than Hmong men for formal education, community leadership, and civic engagement. The Hmong American Women’s Leadership Project, funded by the Greater Green Bay Women’s Fund and based in the United Hmong and Asian American Community Center, seeks to strengthen Hmong women’s abilities to make social change for themselves, their families, and their communities. This Project will provide wide-ranging leadership development programs for approximately 150 Hmong women and girls, while helping them to develop the support systems necessary for personal and structural social change.

Women’s Fund Grants Applicant: Green Bay West High School Project: Girls Leadership Group Summary: This fall, girls at Green Bay’s West High School will have the

wonderful opportunity to celebrate the strengths of being female while working on leadership, personal responsibility, awareness and empathy, and respect. While so many teen girls struggle to imagine themselves as capable leaders, through weekly meetings this group will organize and attend activities designed to help them dream, set goals, and anticipate road blocks. A Greater Green Bay Women’s Fund grant will cover the costs of materials and activities.

Applicant: YWCA of Green Bay-De Pere Project: TechGYRLS Summary: The YWCA’s TechGYRLS program encourages at-risk preteen and teen girls to build on their existing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) interests in order to improve their futures. This program, aided by a grant of the Greater Green Bay Women’s Fund, broadens girls’ knowledge and interests in the STEM areas, helps them gain the confidence necessary to use technology tools, and expands their awareness of career possibilities. Not only does TechGYRLS focus on expanded aspirations, but it is designed to help girls make better educational and relational choices.

Power of the Purse

Women’s Fund Grants

At the July board of directors meeting of the Women’s Fund, the directors established that future 2009-2011 grant making will be directed toward self esteem and leadership programs for women and girls. In addition, grant reviewers will look for organizations that consult and collaborate with other agencies to enhance existing programs and augment opportunities; have a board, staff, and volunteers that reflect the diversity of the community served; and demonstrate women and girls served are involved in planning and implementation of the projects and programs. The Emergency Fund of The Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay was established to be responsive to unexpected community needs and to assist nonprofit organizations with programs serving women and girls in times of emergency. Emergency requests can be given at any time during the year. The Women’s Fund Emergency Fund is defined as an unexpected event that affects the operation of a program or organization serving women and/ or girls and threatens the ability to provide service to women and girls. Grant amounts for emergency funding requests are dependent upon funds available and the evaluation process. Contact the Community Foundation for more information. Dates to remember for 2010 grant request: July 1, 2010 – Deadline for submission of grant proposal September 2010 – Funds available

Donsia Strong Hill

A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart, and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words.” Donsia Strong has been my friend since 1989. Through the years, our friendship has endured long distances and long absences. When she moved from Washington, D.C. to Green Bay, I thought she’d lost her mind. But no, she just lost her heart and found her soul in a beautiful city I saw last year when I spoke at this powerful event. Every time I see her, she reminds me of what we’re here for: to live a life of purpose. She also reminds me to laugh. No one laughs, no one works, no one loves her community more than Donsia Strong Hill. Her dear friend, Rochelle Riley Ann Arbor, Michigan

Sally Thompson

Special recognition is in order for Sally Thompson. Throughout your life you have unselfishly given of yourself to family, friends and your community. You have been a skilled elementary teacher, caring mother to our three boys, loving and loved grandmother to eight, close friend to many, admired community leader and my valued buddy and wife for over fifty years. Many have told me and our family that there is little Sally can’t accomplish when she applies her considerable, but often silent, organizational skills and passion for results. This was especially true, Sally, when you served as President of Service League, of your PEO chapter and of the Heritage Hill Foundation. You have been an inspiration to me, your family and many others around you. Thank you for being Sally and impacting so many lives. Our deepest love and respect, Ed and a grateful Thompson family

Jonie Paye

A friend to many, Jonie jumps in with gusto and passion for the causes she believes in and loves. She is devoted to her husband Lyle and to her family. There is never a question that they come first in her life. Jonie manages to balance her time well among her family, her work at WBAY-TV, and her community volunteer activities. Over the years, she has generously given her time, her skills, and her leadership to her favorite causes including Service League, the Back-to-School Store, Encompass Child Care, PEO, the Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay, and the Girlfriends Event. Her efficient, effective, positive, energetic manner, make her a true role model. We are all inspired by her unwavering dedication and enthusiasm to her projects, her quick-witted humor, her contagious laugh, and her tireless energy to help children, women and families in this community. A Tribute to Our Mom: Our mom is a very loving and caring woman not only for her family but for others. She enjoys spending time with her family and students. Our mom is not only beautiful on the outside, but on the inside as well. We couldn’t ask for a better mom; she would do anything for us. Most importantly, our mom has an awesome sense of humor and is someone we can call a friend and count on. Annie, Carly and Evan

Suzy and Ron Pfeifer

Quietly and passionately, Suzy and Ron Pfeifer are devoted to helping children and to making our community a better place. Over the years, they have served as benevolent leaders and volunteers for numerous local organizations including The Women’s Fund, Encompass Childcare, The Boys and Girls Club, the Art Garage, Scholarships, Inc., Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Green Bay Symphony, Bellin College of Nursing, and UWGB Basketball, just to name those we are aware of. Beyond their charitable commitments, they are truly dedicated friends. While the past year brought us formidable challenges and sadness, Suzy and Ron have always been there for us. Without a pause, Suzy compassionately helped us through what we couldn’t do for ourselves. We knew just how devoted to us they were when they left a UWGB Girls Basketball game (Ron’s love) to help us through a difficult evening. Always attentive and thoughtful of Hopie, they are our family here. We give a loving tribute to Suzy and Ron for being the wonderful individuals they are. Love and hugs, Hopie, Bevie and Don

Frequently Asked Questions

Grants are a powerful catalyst for social change. The Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay was established to support programs that will improve the well-being of women and girls. The Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay considers making grants its most powerful important work.

What is a women’s fund? The Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay is a partnership of donors, grantees, and volunteers working to support programs for women and girls. All local funds are held at the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation. Today over 132 women’s and girls’ foundations are thriving throughout the United States and abroad. Since 1985 these foundations have given over $250 million in grants and raised another $300 million for endowments and programs to increase the impact of women and their philanthropy. Currently in Wisconsin, there are Women’s Funds established in Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, La Crosse, Madison, Milwaukee, and Racine. Why target programs for women and girls? Despite the dramatic advancement in recent decades, women are still far more likely than men to be homeless, to live in poverty, to be unemployed or under-employed, to face violence, and to suffer inadequate housing and health care. Women today bear disproportionately the burdens of working and taking care of children, husbands, and aging parents. Although programs that address the needs of women and girls benefit families, communities, and our society as a whole, less than 6 percent of national foundation budgets each year go to causes specifically earmarked for women and girls. Our goal is to increase financial resources available to programs for women and girls in our region now and in the future. Why another fund in Green Bay? This is an opportunity to pool our money and directly help women and girls in our community. The Fund is not duplicating, nor replacing. Rather it is embracing and supporting what other wonderful organizations in the Green Bay area are already doing and then some. Think of The Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay as a type of insurance policy or a savings account. We want to establish a fund to guarantee that opportunities will be available from one year to the next to help women and girls. We will support already established programs that need financial assistance and develop new initiatives that address women’s and girls’ issues and opportunities that are not already being addressed. Is The Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay separate from the Community Foundation? The Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay is a designated field of interest fund within the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation. The fund has a 501(c)(3) status. Who decides what organizations receive grants from The Women’s Fund? We are part of the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation’s granting cycle. A volunteer committee reviews applications and makes recommendations.

What are our goals? To raise $1 million in our endowment by 2009 and grant out $50,000 per year, every year. Can I make my commitment over time? Yes. In order to have funds available for grants, we are encouraging payment within 3 years. What is a planned gift? Women are increasingly comfortable making planned gifts with their inheritances and earned wealth. Of the largest major gifts and planned gifts around the U.S., women are rapidly catching up with men, in terms of gift size and frequency. Planned giving, especially methods that generate income during one’s life, are logical options for older women who may worry about having enough income to last for their lifetime. The Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay has a gift acceptance policy that outlines how a planned gift will be spent once received, i.e., endowment, grant-making and operations. Can I volunteer for The Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay? Yes. We offer several opportunities for volunteer involvement. Contact Barbara Braun at Bellin Health (920) 431-5506 or email barb.braun@bellin.org or Martha Ahrendt at the Community Foundation at (920) 432-0800 or by e-mail at Martha@ggbcf.org.
