Spring

T

on the

southside

here’s no better place to spend the few perfect days of spring than the hottest, fastest growing area in Fort Worth: the South Side. On Magnolia Avenue alone,

there are tons of entertainment, food, and retail options. There are also some exciting new places and a few more on the horizon. South Side is also quickly becoming a hot spot for concerts and all-day music festivals.

Bottoms up: Order up your favorite prohibition-era cocktail and soak up the ambience at The Usual.

One of the most recent additions to the ‘hood is The Usual, a swanky but unpretentious upscale bar, featuring prohibition-era cocktails. The interior is clean and modern, with light woodtones accented by shimmering silver flourishes. The Usual is Fort Worth’s only non-smoking bar open until 2 a.m. It’s a unique place that is perfect for date night, an after-dinner cocktail, or a nightcap. On the restaurant scene, a few highly anticipated places have finally opened their doors. Cat City Grill on West Magnolia Avenue has already been hailed as one of the city’s best. Opened by the former chef of Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House and the owner of the beloved Lili’s Bistro, Cat City offers steaks, seafood, and unique sandwiches. Also new to Magnolia is Mamma Mia Italian Grill and Pizza, offering cozy Italian food that tastes like an Italian grandmother cooked it. On the menu are multiple seafood options, all of the comforting classics -- all of which can be drenched in Mamma’s tasty marinara -- and an entire menu of pizza varieties.

Some great new restaurants are also on the horizon on Mad-nolia. Coming to the historic Gunn’s Cleaners building is Zio Carlo Brew Pub, a micro-brewery and Italian eatery. Also coming soon is Jack Tanner’s Patio Grill, which will have a full service bar, with two patio areas, and will offer a “family-inspired” menu. All of these new places will only bolster Magnolia’s reputation as the premier restaurant row and night-life scene in the city, which already includes some critical darlings like Lili’s Bistro, the Spiral Diner, Ellerbe Fine Foods, the Chat Room Pub, Yucatan Taco Stand, Junsuree Thai House, and many others. Magnolia Avenue Salon, the South Side’s premier Paul Mitchell focus salon, has made the move to their new location around the corner at 1210 S Main Street. Its brick interior and all around funky vibe provides the setting for dozens of services and seemingly limitless options for color. Look for their grand re-opening to coincide with ArtsGoggle in May. Spring on the South Side also means the return of First Friday on the Green, a concert series held at Magnolia Green Park and presented by Fort Worth South, Inc. Last year’s shows included a widerage of local and regional touring bands that provided the soundtrack to family fun out in the sun. Arts Goggle, a biannual celebration of art and music hosted by Southside businesses, is a great excuse to walk around the neighborhood this spring while experiencing some of the city’s finest art and listening to some great local bands. The Southside is the place to be in any kind of weather, but those perfect spring days are a great excuse to get off the couch and experience one of the city’s fastest growing areas.

Let an artist be your guide... F

ort Worth artist Gregory Story travels more than 20,000 miles a year to show at major art festivals from coast to coast, but there will be no place like home April 8-11. That’s when MAIN ST. Fort Worth Arts Festival (MAIN ST.) opens for its 25th year and draws a crowd to the city that boasts some of the world’s most celebrated art collections and museums. An estimated $4 million in art is bought and sold at the show, and Story has been a part of it for 10 years as an exhibitor, volunteer, juror, and member of its Artists Advisory Committee. He’s the go-to guy for advice on what to see and do when MAIN ST. takes the town. Take these tips from Story when bound for MAIN ST. in pursuit of fine art and fun. • Know your show. “Research the show ahead of time,” Story recommends. Start with the online Artist’s Gallery at www. mainstreetartsfest.org and follow links to artists’ individual sites. 10

downtown fort worth

• Don’t forget your walking shoes: At MAIN ST., a guest will walk at least two miles to see all of the more than 200 exhibiting artists’ booths. • If you must have it, buy now. “Visit your top 10 artists before you buy, but if you see something you love, don’t wait, assuming it will be there when you return,” Story said. “It won’t be.” • Respect the value of an artist’s time and talent. “Don’t haggle over one piece,” Story said. “If you’re buying multiples, then you can talk about price.” • Ship, don’t schlep. “Don’t be afraid to ask the artist to ship your purchase, and ask if you need help installing the piece,” Story suggests. • Stay over. Story tells friends to extend their stay at least a day to take in Fort Worth’s museums and galleries. MAIN ST. packs downtown Fort Worth each spring with a celebration of fine arts and crafts, music, film,

april 2010

and food a mile long. More than 200 juried artists and fine crafts exhibitors line brick-paved Main Street, joined by musicians and dancers on three stages. Performance artists and food and drink vendors complete the scene. 2010 Grammy nominee Jonny Lang, Los Lonely Boys, jazz man Kirk Whalum, and Poi Dog Pondering headline the 2010 Music on MAIN schedule, which will rock three festival stages with more than 100 live performances. Festival hours will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, April 8; 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 9-10; and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 11, 2010. Admission is free to the public. MAIN ST. Fort Worth Arts Festival is presented by Coors Light and produced by Downtown Fort Worth Initiatives, Inc. For more information, visit MAIN ST. online at www.mainstreetartsfest. org.

Sushi Axiom The newest member of the Montgomery Plaza restaurant family is Sushi Axiom, and what a welcome arrival it is. In the spot formerly occupied by another swanky sushi restaurant, Sushi Axiom is in the right location for light lunches, lunch dates, dinner with the friends, or a romantic dinner for two. Surrounded by places like Wine Styles, Dolce Vida, Uncommon Angles, and other upscale retailers, Sushi Axiom is easily accessible while running errands or on your way to BoomerJack’s across the street to watch the game (if you have a hankering for superior sushi rather than a juicy burger). With another location down the road (4625 Donnelly Ave.), Sushi Axiom in Montgomery Plaza has a feel that’s familiar and inviting. The water-wall at the entrance gives visitors a welcoming sense of calm, and the low-pulsing trance music softly playing allows you to converse at a normal volume. Vaulted, beam-exposed ceilings top

an urban room filled with blacks, whites, silvers, and other eye-catching organic hues. One of the coolest décor touches is Sushi Axiom’s set of bright “red sun” doors to the right of the sushi bar backed by a vibrantly colored fish tank. A knowledgeable server is a well-tipped server, and Sushi Axiom’s know enough about the menu to match your tastes and deliver a meal you didn’t even realize you were craving. One of the best secrets in town: Sushi Axiom’s bento boxes. Sure the $11 price tag may have you stunned at first, but we are talking about several pieces of sashimi and sushi, an entire roll, a huge sesame salad, and a perfect miso soup -- this box is two days’ worth of food! Not in the mood for sushi? Try Sushi Axiom’s New York strip, tiger prawns, grilled salmon, chicken teriyaki, beef tenderloin, or duck. And, of course, the perfect accompaniment to any meal is a cool beverage. Sushi Axiom’s

bar and martini menus are worth the trip even if you aren’t hungry. Sample the warm saki, extra dry saki, wines, beers, or a specialty martini such as the alltoo-easy-to-drink Dragon Lady (raspberry vodka, Framboise, Cointreau, lime juice, cranberry juice, pineapple juice, and champagne). Seriously perfect summertime in a chilled glass.

YOU GOTTA TRY THIS

Though Mamma Mia Italian Grill & Pizza’s original location on East Belknap Street is still going strong, the traditional Italian food institution has just opened another location, this one on West Magnolia Avenue on the near-South Side. One part of the menu not to pass up features the Neapolitan pizzas. The Florentine comes covered with garlic, mushrooms, spinach, and tomatoes. The sauce is light and zesty, and the cheese is spicy and melted to gooey perfection. You won’t even need any ranch dressing. The toppings are fresh, and the crust is crispy on the outside with just enough soft, warm goodness inside. Order the Tony’s salad with artichoke hearts, mushrooms, black olives, and tomatoes in lemon olive oil topped with mozzarella and Parmesan, and you’ll be feasting like a king, with leftovers for your court.

beat the clock Zippy’s All American Grill The setting: At Zippy’s All American Grill, you get a country twist on the old-fashioned diner. The Sundance Square diner located on Houston at 3rd has wooden crayon-colored booths, a double-sided bar for hungry folk to belly up to, high-top metallic tables, and, yes, even an original table-style Ms. Pac-Man video game that doubles as an extra seat. A jukebox on the wall will serenade you with old-time country or current hits. The menu: While standing in line, guests can view the full menu written on a chalkboard or another board with daily specials. Half-pound burgers made to order are stacked high with fixings, juicy, and peppery. The quarter-pound hot dogs are also pretty tasty. Try the Junkyard Dog, with mustard, grilled bells, onion, chili, relish, cheese, sauerkraut, tomato, and jalapenos. Don’t forget to order fries -- Zippy’s are quite possible the best, crispiest crinkle-fries in town. Smother them with cheese if you like. They’ll hold up no matter what you pile on them. Zippy’s also caters to the health conscious by offering low-carb plates, including grilled chicken and even a veggie burger.

The service: Ordering at the counter and having your food brought to you is one way Zippy’s is perfect for a quick lunch or dinner. Because things can happen in an instant. At 7:10 p.m., on January 2, 2008, everything changed for Chesleigh and Blake Lloyd. Suddenly, and three months early, their son decided it was time to be born. In an instant, a perfectly normal pregnancy turned into a high-risk delivery. Next thing they knew, Chesleigh was being transferred from her hospital to the one hospital in Tarrant County renowned for high-risk deliveries. Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, with a Level III NICU and the distinction of being named “Best Place To Have A Baby”.* The Lloyds could not have been in better hands. Today, their baby is happy and healthy, and, as Chesleigh notes, “he’s here because they were there.” The lesson from all of this? Simple. You might as well start at the hospital you might end up at. 1-877-THR-Well | TexasHealth.org

Kidding Around

for the young, and young at heart

The fun-filled faces of April: (left) A bright, shining, and painted face of Mayfest; (bottom) The notso-cute-and-cuddly, but still colorful, faces of MOLA.

T

he big deal this April is Mayfest, an annual outdoor party/ concert/fair that goes through the titular month but begins in April. There’s always enough stuff for parents and adult relatives to do -- specifically, imbibe in the adult beverages for sale -- but Mayfest is at heart a kids’ event. Look at all that’s offered: really bad-for-you-but-delicious food and snacks, more than 20 booths of games and activities, and five sprawling areas of attractions and rides. Mayfest begins on Thu., April 29, and lasts until Sun., May 2, at Trinity Park. Tickets are $5-8, and children five and under get in free. Visit www.mayfest.org. For an edutaining experience, head over to the Fort Worth Zoo, whose new 30,000 square foot Museum of Living Art, an indoor/ outdoor herpetological facility, has recently opened. Formerly known as “the snake house,” MOLA houses more than 100 amphibian and reptile species, representing more than 850 16

animals. The Puerto Rican crested toad, the spring salamander, Chiricahua leopard frog, Annam leaf turtle, Utila Island iguana, Houston toad, Chinese threestriped box turtle, Grand Cayman blue iguana, and Malayan painted river turtle are just some of the exotic creatures on display. Tickets are $9-12, and children two and under get in free. Visit www.fortworthzoo.com/conserve/ mola.html. At the beginning of April, round up the little princesses for Casa Manana’s production of the classic fairytale Cinderella starring the lovely Kimberly Whalen. The story of true love in the face of evil takes place from Fri., April 2, through Sun., April 18, at Casa Manana Theatre, 3101 W. Lancaster Ave. in the Cultural District. Tickets are $1517. For more info, visit www. casamanana.org/playhouse or call 817-332-2272.

spring fever in cowtown

If

springtime love isn’t in the air this month then at least music and dancing feet will be.

Central Market (4651 W. Fwy., 817-989-4700) and Fort Worth Weekly’s Thursday Night Live concert series has just kicked off. The first band to play, Fort Worth-based post-punks The Burning Hotels, filled CM’s spacious patio with everyone from people with kids to single folks to people without any kids but not single to people with kids but single to, oh, you get the point -- the crowd was diverse. Expect to see similar faces throughout the rest of the month. Next up on the CM patio stage is the jump-bluesy Big Daddy Alright (April 8), followed by Texas Music purveyors the Casey Thompson Band (with The Will Callers) (April 15), trad-C&W musicians’ musicians 100 Damned Guns (April 22), and another Texas Music artist, Kyle Sherman (April 29). The shows are from 6 ‘til 9 p.m. and are free. Another great free show happens on the first Friday of every month at Magnolia Green Park on the near-South Side. This year’s inaugural performance of First Friday on the Green will feature headliners The Gourds and opener Darrin Kobetich, a Fort Worth guitarist who specializes in bluegrass, blues, and jazz. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and your friends -- of both the two- and four-legged varieties -- to the massive park area in the 1100 block of Lipscomb Street between Rosedale and Magnolia avenues. But keep the coolers at home. Beverages -- and food -- will be available for sale on the premises. The first First Friday on the Green of 2010 with The Gourds and Darrin Kobetich will be on April 2. April, of course, also means Mayfest. (?!) That’s right. The annual springtime event begins the last weekend in April and continues

18

downtown fort worth

through the beginning of the titular month. Though Mayfest is totally family friendly, there’s a lot of stuff for adults to do, especially, y’know, imbibe in adult beverages. You’ll be able to enjoy a couple (or more) cups of beer, margaritas, or wine while taking in the live music on any one of the seven stages spread throughout the 33 acres of Trinity Park where the festival takes place. Tickets are $5-8. Children five and under get in free. Visit www.mayfest.org. April also means the official beginning of patio-partying. In all, there’s a different 817 patio for every mood. Margaritas and sunshine? Try Chimy’s Mexican Cerveceria (1053 Foch St. in the West 7th corridor, 817-348-8888), whose regular crowd is a mix of TCU students and young professionals. Ice-cold beer and good eats? Try Fred’s Texas Café (915 Currie St. in the West 7th corridor, 817-332-0083), where cowboys, professionals, and neohippies rub elbows. Or maybe you just want to enjoy some cold beer while doing some people watching? In that case, you’ll want to swing by 7th Haven (2700 W. 7th St., 817744-8550), whose regular crowd is

april 2010

equal parts hipsters and TCU’ers, or Flips (6613 Fossil Bluff Dr. in North Fort Worth, 817-847-4424), a singles hotspot. Dancing -- and flying and twirling -- feet will be all over the stage at Bass Performance Hall (525 Commerce St. in Sundance Square). From Fri., April 9, until Sun., April 11, Texas Ballet Theater will present The Sleeping Beauty, TBT artistic director Ben Stevenson’s production of the classic fairytale. Set to music

Rock on: (top) 100 Damed Guns perform at Thursday Night Live; (left) The Gourds kick off First Friday on the Green.

Beauty and modern movement: New York City-based dance troupe BODYART explores the space between geographical and metaphysical extremes in LIMBO.

by Tchaikovsky, TBT’s The Sleeping Beauty revolves around Princess Aurora, who is cursed on her 16th birthday to sleep for 100 years unless awakened by a prince’s kiss. The sets of TBT’s production will be lavish, and the dancing will be, as usual, superb. Tickets are $19-99. Visit www. texasballettheater.org. Later in the month at Bass Hall, on Mon., April 26, Performing Arts Fort Worth will present a performance by BODYART, a New York City-based troupe founded in 2005 by TCU grad Leslie Scott that creates original theatrical works via both human movement and technological wizardry. BODYART’s

multimedia productions result from the company’s collaborations with composers, video artists, and designers.
