Summer in Texas is more than a season. It’s a right of passage for everyone who lives through it. But it doesn’t have to be miserable. Of course, it’s very easy to shake your fist at the heavens and curse the hundred-degree temperatures. But for those who embrace the heat, it’s a great opportunity to shed your skin and remake yourself into the summerparty person you’ve always known you could be. All it takes is a little imagination, the right accessories, and a little guidance to complete your summer makeover. A good place to start is with your clothes. If you’re looking to cowboy up but need something a little more high-end than Wranglers, Teskey’s Uptown, located in the heart of the West 7th development, offers a “rock and roll meets cowboy soul concept.” Started out of the back of a truck in Weatherford, Teskey’s has become the foremost name in all things cowboy, including

saddles, boots, riding gear, jewelry, dinnerware, and designer cowboyclothing. Teskey’s Uptown offers contemporary boutique-y western threads in a massive storefront. Bess and Evie’s Vintage specializes in one-of-a-kind vintage clothing for men and women, including a legendary wall of cowboy boots. Bess and Evie’s offers a variety of western, Hawaiian, guayabera shirts, and an assortment of vintage dresses, tops, handbags and accessories. The store specializes in embroidered “hippy” tops that are cool and fun for all occasions. Pappagallo Classiques is an upscale women’s one-stop boutique, featuring everything from the latest runway fashions to expert shopping consultants. Pappagollo, the “girlfriend boutique,” as it is known, has been in business for 26 years and has six locations. Their clothing lines are limited runs, so you won’t be showing up to the party wearing the same dress as someone else. For your inner-badass, DeanKingston offers a wide variety of

It’s not ironic that a place called Cowtown is on a community garden kick. After all, the beloved nickname reflects the desire locals have to farm and grow in environmental sustainability. Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to thrive should be what life is all about –– whether you are talking carrots, cash, or cows. Community gardens have a rich history of boosting morale and keeping “community” the central focus. They started out as Victory Gardens, begun during World War I, when food was rationed, to help keep food prices low and, indirectly, help feed U.S. troops fighting overseas. Thousands upon thousands of people rolled up their sleeves, dug into the earth, and planted seeds all in the name of being patriotic. Wars would come and go over the next few decades, and Victory Gardens morphed into community gardens to promote healthy eating with the right for safe and affordable food –– while still keeping “community” central. Fairmount Community Garden at 1504 and 1510 5th Avenue at Maddox in the Fairmount neighborhood in the Near Southside opened in May and offers 76, 8’-by-4’ plots for $35 a year. Garden organizer, Susan Harper says all plots are full, but don’t hesitate to put your name on the waiting list. After a plot lease is not renewed, calls are made to people waiting. Harper also stresses you do not have to be a member of the Fairmount neighborhood to join the garden. Want to get your hands on some locally grown goods yourself? Opportunities are popping up all over. Be warned: You will need to head out early for the best pickings because once everything is gone, it’s gone. Fresh-from-the-farm products don’t sit around long. Here are just a few of your options to get you started: North Texas Farmers Market Association has the Cowtown Farmers Market every Wednesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. ’til noon at 3821 Southwest Blvd., just west of the traffic circle. The New Public Market is temporarily holding its Market Day at Into the Garden (4600 Dexter Ave.) from 9 a.m. ’til everything is sold out (usually by 2 p.m. at the latest). They’ve recently submitted a proposal to renovate the Public Market Building on Henderson and turn it into their new market space. Beach Street Local Market holds a market on the third Sunday of every month from 10 a.m. ’til 2 p.m. at 3789 N. Beach St.

The Trinity River Vision The Trinity River Vision project is moving ahead quickly, with bridge design changes, land acquisition, and even plans for a wakeboarding park along the Trinity River. “This is an exciting time for the people in Fort Worth because of this project,” said J.D. Granger, executive director for the Trinity River Vision Authority. “We have been able to reduce costs but still fulfill the integrity and mission of the project. We will continue to do that in the future.” The bridges –– which will cross over the future bypass channel at White Settlement Road, Henderson Street, and Main Street –– are pedestrian-friendly and involve iconic architecture. Bridge construction is scheduled to begin next year. The TRV also was part of a purchase in June of 42 acres of property around LaGrave Field, home of the Fort Worth Cats. The acreage cost $17.5 million, which was paid by the Tarrant Regional Water District. The land will be used for right-of-way acquisition, canals, easements, and levee works. The Cowtown Wakepark will be the nation’s newest wakeboarding park and the first one built in a downtown environment. Rather than being pulled by a boat, wakeboarders will be pulled from an overhead metal cable line. The park will be built along the Trinity River near Northside Drive. Construction is scheduled to begin next year. While many have emphasized the flood control and economic development aspects of TRV, access to

parks and trails along the river are a vital component. The renovation of Gateway Park’s Riverside Oxbow area includes the planting of 80,000 trees. The wakeboarding park will have a new trailhead, which will enhance the trail connection between the Northside and downtown. This emphasis on trail access along the river led to a very prestigious award for the TRV in February. The Texas Trails Network awarded TRV its top annual honor, the “Great Texas Trailhead Planning” award. TRV was recognized not only for its specific plans for trails along the river but also for how it used public input to significantly enhance the region. Bailey’s Prime Plus Wow. To say that the newest restaurant to open in the West 7th Corridor, Bailey’s Prime Plus, exudes opulence is an understatement. The posh restaurant features a grand dining room that is an oasis of tranquility, with a raised fountain of running water through giant trees, elegant table settings, massive chandeliers, and, adorning the walls, contemporary artwork. High-backed booths and tables spaced far apart give you the feeling of private dining even when the restaurant is at capacity. Don’t let the setting intimidate you. Bailey’s has a decently priced lunch menu, and even dinner can be affordable if you choose correctly. Either way, the food is exquisite, and well worth it. Cooked to perfect and served in large portions are Bailey’s starters such as the lobster-stuffed avocado (tart, lemony lobster filled packed inside a fried avocado) and the crisp and creamy wedges of almond-crusted brie served with a tart strawberry balsamic ginger jam and sweet Marsala wine jelly. You could also rave about

The Slice salad: chilled iceberg lettuce, heirloom baby tomatoes, crispy applewood smoked bacon, and strong and nutty blue cheese served with a blue cheese-and-chive dressing. But shouldn’t we get to the, uh, meat of the matter? Bailey’s knows steaks. The restaurant’s filets, cuts of prime rib, and ribeyes all come in various sizes and are cooked to order. There also are tremendous seafood offerings. For the most part, they are presented in non-traditional recipes such as the jalapeno-and-onion-crusted bass served with a spicy tequila-and-red-chile cream sauce or the sesame-andshiitake-mushroom-crusted rare tuna with ginger tamari and honey sauces. If you can’t choose between steak or seafood, go for the pairings such as the classic surf and turf or the spin on the classic, the Steak and Cake, a 6-oz. filet with a king crab cake. Our medium-rare filet was meltin-your-mouth delicious, and the crab cake had a slightly charred exterior that gave a nice earthy balance to the zesty, creamy, not-too-fishy insides. Not so adventurous?

Bailey’s Prime Plus knows more than just steak. Broiled salmon, lemon sole, and pan-roasted chicken proved to be equally delectable. Already have dinner plans? Don’t worry. Bailey’s wine list is so extensive you could spend every night there for a year and never have the same thing twice. Plus, Bailey’s also has live music (usually jazz fusion or adult contemporary) every Friday and Saturday in the bar, so think of Bailey’s as a place for all occasions. Owner Ed Bailey’s newest Bailey’s location in Fort Worth is a far cry from his days as a McDonald’s franchisee –– even though

his McDonald’s were unlike any other in the world. They had Ralph Lauren wallpaper, tablecloths, and even servers. Bailey believes people want to enjoy eating in nice places and has stuck by this principal no matter the genre of restaurant. And he is right.

beat the clock McKinley’s Fine Bakery and Café

The setting: Tucked away in the southwest corner of University Park Village, McKinley’s Fine Bakery and Café is an oasis of sorts. Surrounded by stores such as Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Pottery Barn, Francesca’s Collection, Origins, Williams-Sonoma, the new Apple Store, and more, this Fort Worth culinary treasure makes for a welcome break from a full day of shopping or a hard day’s work. The diner is filled with tables that are easy to pull together for parties of 10 or more and tables just for two. Hungry diners wind through a line to order at the counter, a line that conveniently runs past a display case of freshly made pastries, cakes, cookies, and more. McKinley’s is oldfashion bakery dining at its finest. The menu: You guessed it: breakfast, soups, salads, and sandwiches. But we are talking hot chipotle chicken sandwiches with melted provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a drippingwith-goodness chipotle mayo or chicken salad with dried cranberries and toasted pecans tossed in a sweet orange honey mayo on wheat bread. Even the classic bakery pimiento cheese sandwich has a twist: a blend of mild green chiles and poblano peppers. There’s even a Cuban panini: mouth-watering ham and gooey melted

cheese on fresh, perfectly pressed bread. Salads are crisp, cool, and refreshing. The strawberry spinach salad with blue cheese, walnuts, and a strawberry vinaigrette dressing practically tastes like summer –– the tartness of the fresh strawberries is a welcome cooling delight. Breakfast comes in the form of pancakes served with maple syrup and bacon, hearty oatmeal with raisins, brown sugar, and strawberries, breakfast burritos, and more. The verdict: Whether you are already planning a trip to University Park Village for some shopping or you just need a great quick meal, McKinley’s deserves to be first on your list.

Kidding Around

for the young and young at art

There’s no end to the number of things to do to keep the kids busy during the summer –– having them wash the car repeatedly is always a good idea. But even the most rambunctious little ones might tend to get bored with the repetitive motions and the fumes from the noxious wax and the scrubbing with a toothbrush. So give ’em a break. One sure-fire hit anytime of the week this summer will prove to be Stockyards Station. Perhaps the biggest event of the summer will be on Sat., July 24, Fort Worth Stockyards National Day of the American Cowboy. American Cowboy, the best Western lifestyle magazine, named the event the best of its kind in the nation –– and for good reason: The day includes a “Texas-Size” art contest, cowboy celebration parade, watermeloneating contest, Fort Worth Herd’s CowCamp, the most worn-out boot contest ($5 entry fee), best mustache contest, Riscky’s rib-eating contest ($5 entry), Cowboy Idol (modeled after American Idol), and, of course, the Fort Worth Cattle Drive. This year, Chris Cox, two-time Road to the Horse winner, will perform training demonstrations in Cowtown Coliseum. For tickets or more information, call 817-625-1025. For

tickets to Pawnee Bill Wild West Show at Cowtown Coliseum (2:30 and 4:30 p.m.), call 817-625-1025. All of the activities will be taking place along East Exchange Avenue in the heart of the Fort Worth Stockyards. For more information, call 817-625-9715. No matter what you do this July, you’ve got to make time for the kiddos to explore their imaginations (and preferably in great airconditioned indoors). The Kimbell Art Museum will be one place to be. Storytelling, other performances, film programs, and, here’s the best part, hands-on activities will be going on throughout the month of July at the world-class museum at 3333 Camp Bowie Blvd. From 1 to 4 p.m. on Sat., July 31, there’s Michelangelo, Matisse, and Me, a leisure event that will allow participants (of all ages) to “explore their own original ideas through creative activities inspired by European paintings in the collection,” according to the museum. No reservations required. Admission is free. For more information, call 817332-8451, ext. 297. And have you ever looked at

a piece of Abstract-Expressionist art and thought, “My kid can do that?” Well, you’re just like millions of other crazy-talking folk, which is why Amon Carter Museum is presenting the adult tour My Kid Could Do That: Demystifying Abstract Art, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sat., July 10. Amon Carter’s Sara Klein will use the Carter’s current exhibit, Constructive Spirit: Abstract Art in South and North America, as a point of departure into a discussion on the theoretical –– and applied –– underpinnings of abstract art and its cultural significance. Then maybe you’ll stop thinking Junior is better than Picasso. Admission is free, but reservations are required –– seating is limited. Call 817-989-5030 or e-mail education@cartermuseum.org.

jazz and blues in july

Beating the heat is the name of the game this July in downtown Fort Worth –– and our local theaters and bars/restaurants are here to help. The essence of the blues –– survival, perhaps even triumph in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds –– is manifest in Jubilee Theatre’s July production. Running from Fri., July 23, ’til Sun., Aug. 15 at 506 Main St., Blues in the Night is a dramatic revue of 26 numbers originally written or performed by the likes of Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, and more, all telling of the tale of a lying, cheating dog of a man who’s done three women wrong. The story isn’t connected necessarily by dialogue –– there are very few un-sung exchanges among characters –– but rather by the dramatic trajectories of the songs. For more information, visit www. jubileetheatre.org or call the box office at 817-338-4411. You can bet that a little blues has been sneaking its way into the Scat Jazz Lounge (111 W. 4th St., 817870-9100) every Sunday night since last month, when the venerable downtown hot-spot decided to resurrect the Sunday night jazz jams that regularly took place at the dearly departed Black Dog Tavern (both the downtown location and the one in the West 7th Street corridor). Back in the day, the biggest party in town on Sunday nights was at the Black Dog, where jazz-heads, service-industry folk, yuppies, college

students, and more came together to listen to some of the sharpest jazzbos in town. Beloved Black Dog owner Tad Gaither relocated his club to the West 7th corridor to be in on the ground floor of the development that he knew was coming (and that is here now in all of its glory). But a confluence of hostile business factors forced Gaither to close up shop –– not long after, he passed away; a shame also because Gaither was fascinated by urban development and would have loved to have seen all of the construction that’s been going on in town. He also would have been heartened to learn that before moving out of town bandleader Dave Karnes tried to resurrect the Black Dog jams at Lola’s Saloon in the West 7th corridor and also that the Scat is bringing back the jams today –– and there’s no reason why the Scat can’t succeed. The place bears an uncanny resemblance to the first Black Dog, the one on Throckmorton: The Scat is underground and also has a clientele that’s classy but not afraid to have fun. Gaither would be proud. Lovable Tad would also be glad to learn that Flying Saucer Draught Emporium (111 E. 4th St.) is keeping local original music alive downtown. You’ll still hear your fair share of cover artists there, but you’ve still got to applaud a place that’s booking local original acts –– and on weekends, not in the doldrums of Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays. Slated to play the Saucer in July are some good’uns, including Dirt & Earthy

Vibes (Thu., July 1), Luke Wade (Thu., July 15), Pablo and the Hemphill 7 (Sat., July 24), Villain Vanguard (Fri., July 30), and The Boss Level (Sat., July 31). For more information, visit www. beerknurd.com/stores/fortworth or call 817-336-7470. Blues –– and reds and greens and golds –– will be coursing throughout Bass Performance Hall from Fri., July 23, through Thu., July 29, when Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is presented by Casa Manana. A re-telling of the biblical story of Joseph, his fantastical abilities, and his even more fantastical coat, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical premiered in London in 1968 and has been performed on Broadway and the West End multiple times. “Close Every Door” and “Any Dream Will Do” are just a couple of the rousing, pop-friendly songs that make up the musical that’s appropriate for children and adults. For more information, visit www.basshall.com or call the box office at 817-212-4280. At nearby Circle Theatre (230 W. 4th St.), Something Intangible will be running until Sat., July 24. Set in 1940s Hollywood, Bruce Graham’s dark comedy is about two brothers –– one is a visionary; the other a numbers man –– who are trying to run a failing studio on the brink of a major technological innovation. “If they don’t kill each other first, together they will create … something intangible,” Circle says. information, visit www.circletheatre. com or call the box office at 817877-3040. At Stage West (821 West Vickery Blvd.), Alan Ayckbourn’s RolePlay will be running until Sun., July 25. Think of it as a funny British guy’s version of Meet the Parents. Anal-retentive Julie-Ann is having something of a meltdown over the immediate prospect of the party –– the parents are late, and the weather outside is frightful. The absence of a single pudding fork sends Julie-Ann out into the inclement weather for a replacement. No sooner does she exit the stage than does former exotic dancer Paige land on Justin’s balcony, seeking refuge from her mobster boyfriend and with her bodyguard Micky in tow. And then Julie-Ann’s hyper-conservative parents and Justin’s “tipsy” mother arrive … For more information, visit stagewest.org or call 817-784-9378.
