Wine R

A Wine Tour of Tarrant County

W

e love drinking wine in the summertime –– the Texas heat demands cooling off, preferably by a dipping pool. With at least a dozen different wineries and wine bars in Tarrant County, there are plenty of places to sample favorites that beat the heat. Plan a day on the patio at any of the area’s local wine stops featured here, or pick up a bottle to enjoy at home. A few local wine experts have even recommended some choices for your consideration.

Times Ten Cellars

“My personal summer favorite is actually a red,” said Madeleine Shero, one of Times Ten Cellars’ founding partners. “It’s a Grenache, a Spanish varietal. There are lots of raspberry and red fruits up front, and it has a nice spicy finish to it. It’s really good with pizza or Spanish tapas.” Times Ten opened in Fort Worth last fall to the delight of those seeking the atmosphere of a boutique winery without having to travel far. Located in the always-growing area of West 7th Street, Times Ten offers a dark, comfortable setting that’s easy on the eyes. This winery sources its grapes 6

and makes most of the vino in-house. Shero’s Times Ten Grenache pairs perfectly with a pepperoni pizza from Rocco’s, which can be ordered in. 1100 Foch St., FW. 817-336-9463. www.timestencellars.com.

Zambrano Wine Cellar

“I really enjoy a good, bone-dry French rosé,” said Cef Zambrano when asked about his summer fave. “It is refreshing but also has the minerality that goes well with so many foods. You can serve it with salads and many seafood dishes.” Zambrano has a few French rosés on his extensive wine list at Zambrano Wine Cellar. His cozy bar opened

nearly three years ago downtown and has pleased the palates of local patrons and visitors. Try the towering Caprese salad or the signature, thickcrusted pizza with jamón serrano, artichoke hearts, and red peppers. 910 Houston St., FW. 817-850-9463. www.zambranowines.com.

Sunset Winery

“I generally prefer full-bodied, bold red wines,” said winemaker Bruce Anderson, of Sunset Winery. “These go really well with grilled foods, such as steak, butterflied leg of lamb, or salmon steaks.” Anderson has many recommendations for wine pairing

and summertime grilling. With steak, try Sunset’s Twilight Tango, the winery’s malbec. Grilled lamb pairs well with Sun Ray Cabernet. Anderson even says dropping an ice cube or two in Pink Rainbows, the winery’s rosé, is perfectly fine to keep the light, crisp wine cooler longer. Don’t miss Sunset’s monthly “Wine Down,” featuring jazz music on the deck. 1535 S. Burleson Blvd., Burleson. 817-426-1141. www.sunsetwinery. com.

Cross Timbers Winery

“My summer favorite is the Cross Timbers Viognier,” said owner Don Bigbie. “It’s served chilled, has a wonderful bouquet, and goes with all of the standard chardonnay food groups. It’s also delightful as a stand-alone.” Located in a house built in the 1870s, Cross Timbers features its namesake wines along with wines produced from its sister wineries in Mexico and Austria, including chardonnay, merlot, and cab from Casa Madero and Riesling and Grüner Veltliner from Winzer Krems. 805 N. Main St., Grapevine. 817488-6789. www.crosstimberswinery. com.

Lightcatcher Winery

Caris Turpen –– Lightcatcher owner, winemaker, and chef –– likes “a crisp, citrusy sauvignon blanc” for the summer. “It goes with lighter summer foods,” she said. “Everything from grilled sturgeon to pizza margherita, to sushi and salads.” Recently named one of Fort Worth’s best-kept secrets by Fort Worth Weekly, Lightcatcher offers dining amenities that set it apart from many other area wineries. Turpen creates a new dinner menu every weekend. A recent weekend featured halibut baked in a puff pastry with spring peas and cream, and a soy-ginger-grilled flank steak with smoked gouda and white truffle mac ’n’ cheese. 6925 Confederate Park Rd., FW. 817-237-2626. www.lightcatcher.com.

Winslow’s Wine Cafe

table scout

Taverna

T

ime to revisit an old favorite. Taverna has been a staple in downtown Fort Worth for many years and still holds up as one of the top restaurants in town. If you haven’t visited already, know that this classic neighborhoodstyle Italian eatery is one you should put in your permanent rotation.   Dark woods, creamy walls with crimson accents, and subtle Italian decorative touches help transport you to Florence. A large, open air, woodfire oven is on the left as you pass the bar area with enough seating to be an entirely separate restaurant. Bar, table, and island seating is available for you to either sip wine, beer, or cocktails with friends or have a more casual dinning experience. The wine list is extensive, and even Taverna’s house wines are premiums. Plus, with beer like Peroni on tap, this bar could become a regular happy hour stop for any crowd.   Taverna’s brunch is

served every Saturday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. You can create your own omelet or choose your egg style, but don’t pass up offerings like the two fried eggs with sausage served over crispy garlic bread topped with truffle oil and served with breakfast potatoes or, a twist on the favorite, warm, soft vanilla French toast served with creamy mascarpone and fresh fruit. Also, purchase an entrée, and bottomless mimosas and bellinis are just $5.   The dinner menu expands on the lunch menu with classic starters like bruschetta, caprese salad, and focaccia with olive oil and parmesan cheese. Pastas of all shapes and sizes can be found dressed up in ways you never imagined, like the delicate gorgonzolaand-pear-filled pasta served with walnuts and wilted arugula in a rich and creamy dolce latte sauce. Taverna also offers whole wheat pasta with Sicilian-

Whether plain or piled high, Taverna’s pizzas are exquisite. style turkey meatballs in a vegetable ragu that will make you feel as healthy as if you just ran a marathon. If you want to try something other than Taverna’s delicious pastas, there’s plenty to choose from. Beef tenderloin, sea bass, salmon, chicken stuffed with fontina cheese and ham, and other noodle-less masterpieces await. A signature dish at Taverna is risotto. A handful of risottos, from the simple to the more complex, are offered, including saffron with mixed seafood and

topped with parmesan cheese and truffle oil. And don’t forget about that pizza oven that greeted you on the way in.   A trip to Taverna today will remind you why you loved this restaurant in the first place.

Taverna 450 Throckmorton St., F.W. 817-885-7502. Mon-Thu 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Fri & Sat 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sun 10 a.m. -10 p.m.

YOU GOTTA TRY THIS Though Mamma Mia Italian Grill & Pizza’s original location on East Belknap Street is still going strong, the traditional Italian food institution has just opened another location, this one on West Magnolia Avenue on the near-South Side. One part of the menu not to pass up features the Neapolitan pizzas. The Florentine comes covered with garlic, mushrooms, spinach, and tomatoes. The sauce is light and zesty, and the cheese is spicy and melted to gooey perfection. You won’t even need any ranch dressing. The toppings are fresh, and the crust is crispy on the outside with just enough soft, warm goodness inside. Order the Tony’s salad with artichoke hearts, mushrooms, black olives, and tomatoes in lemon olive oil topped with mozzarella and Parmesan, and you’ll be feasting like a king, with leftovers for your court.

beat the clock Red Cactus

Time in: 11:40 a.m.

The setting: With a sleek contemporary interior and a bright red exterior, Red Cactus is anything but introverted as it sits boldly along the outskirts of the TCU campus. A big front window and brightly colored walls, furniture, and fixtures welcome you to this counter-service restaurant of super fresh Mexican food. The menu: How do you know it’s “super fresh”? They cook it right in front of you! Step up to the glass counter and order a burrito, taco, torta, quesadilla, or even fajitas, and the cooks will grab your meat and veggies and put them right on the grill in front of you. The grilled veggie burrito is huge and stuffed with zucchini, onions, and peppers. Your choice of fixings includes rice, three different styles of beans (including vegetarian black beans), more veggies, and all the toppings you can imagine –– even queso. The grilled fish tacos are juicy, fresh, and topped to order. Nachos are piled high with refried beans, melted cheese, guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream, and the meat topping of your choice. Breakfast options like a simple bacon and potato burrito or a more extravagant way to welcome your morning, chilaquiles con pollo (think: morning chicken nachos), will get you off to a great start.

Time out: 12:10 p.m.

Light eaters have salads to choose from, and kiddos can enjoy tacos, quesadillas, or flautitas. The verdict: Whether you are starving, picky, or just looking for a snack, Red Cactus serves up something for everyone to love, and not just because you tell them how to make it.

Counter-Service Fresh: Only your imagination limits you at Red Cactus.

T

he big deal this April is Mayfest, an annual outdoor party/ concert/fair that goes through the titular month but begins in April. There’s always enough stuff for parents and adult relatives to do -- specifically, imbibe in the adult beverages for sale -- but Mayfest is at heart a kids’ event. Look at all that’s offered: really bad-for-you-but-delicious food and snacks, more than 20 booths of games and activities, and five sprawling areas of attractions and rides. Mayfest begins on Thu., April 29, and lasts until Sun., May 2, at Trinity Park. Tickets are $5-8, and children five and under get in free. Visit www.mayfest.org. For an edutaining experience, head over to the Fort Worth Zoo, whose new 30,000 square foot Museum of Living Art, an indoor/ outdoor herpetological facility, has recently opened.
