Let’s Do Brunch! by Celestina Blok

The holidays are here, your family is in town, and they’re looking to you for all meal planning. Designate a day to take a break from the kitchen and enjoy a weekend brunch together. Your family will appreciate the mimosas, the omelets, and the alone time with you, away from your mixer and cutting board. The following list is far from comprehensive, but it will be enough to get you started.

Café Modern

3200 Darnell St., 817-840-2157 Saturday & Sunday 10 a.m.––3 p.m. Impress your relatives by showing your cultured side with brunch at Café Modern, inside the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. The chic café offers salads, soups, sandwiches, and breakfast items, including sticky bun pancakes with butterscotch-pecan sauce, baconwrapped cinnamon rolls (so unusual but so good), and jalapenocheddar grits with buttermilk biscuits and sausage gravy.

The Pour House

2725 W. 7th St., 817-335-2575 Saturday & Sunday 11 a.m.––3 p.m. A hot spot for college footballand NFL-watching parties, The Pour House is the perfect place to send the fellows for a few hours if needed. But the entire family will find something on the extensive menu, including chicken-fried steak and eggs, breakfast quesadillas, and “green” eggs and ham, with a jalapeno-cilantro pesto.

Fred’s Texas Café

111 W. 4th St., 817-348-0633 Sunday 10 a.m.––2 p.m. If you haven’t tried Simply Fondue, brunch is a great time to visit. Guests receive three courses, including cheese fondue, a salad, and choice of entrée. Mimosas and poinsettias are only $1 each. 1314 W. Magnolia Ave., 817-332-8834 Sunday 11 a.m.––5 p.m. Even tried-and-true carnivores will devour the delicious brunch specialties at this totally vegan restaurant and bakery. All-you-can-eat pancakes, biscuits and gravy, breakfast sandwiches, and taquitos combine for a totally unique menu that’s healthy, hearty, and very tasty.

Cantina Laredo

530 Throckmorton St., 817-810-0773 Sunday 11 a.m.––3p.m. The entire lunch menu is available here, but brunch items include huevos rancheros, carne asada and eggs, chicken fajita omelets, and a complimentary mimosa or bloody “Maria.”

2600 W. 7th St., 817-332-6227 Sunday 10 a.m.––2:30 p.m. Mac’s has an extensive brunch menu with traditional egg dishes, including omelets, eggs Florentine, and steak and eggs. Also enjoy grilled fish dishes, chicken-fried steak, or a bacon-wrapped filet. 915 Currie St., 817-332-0083 Sunday 10:30 a.m.––1 p.m. Any out-of-towner will instantly fall in love with the Texas charm and eclectic atmosphere that Fred’s provides; not to mention the food. Winslow’s Wine Cafe

4101 Camp Bowie Blvd., 817-546-6843 Sunday 11 a.m.––2 p.m. We love the blackened salmon with cheddar-bacon grits here, and both children and adults will enjoy the banana sandwich, featuring Applewood bacon, peanut butter, fresh apple fries, and honey butter.

Button’s

6100 Camp Bowie Blvd., 817-737-8427 First and third Sundays only 11 a.m.––1 p.m. This is one of Fort Worth’s best-kept brunch secrets. Don’t forget to bring your own alcoholic beverages.

840 Currie St., 817-332-1555 Sunday 10 a.m.––2:30 p.m. Recently adding a Sunday brunch to its weekly schedule, Brownstone shines with a unique menu, including bread pudding toast with eggs and maple bacon, and flapjacks with apple butter. Brunch drinks are fun, including a potent coffee concoction called the “West 7th Café.”

2201 N. Commerce St., 817-626-4356 Saturday & Sunday 11 a.m.––3 p.m. If you can’t get in for dinner (because the waiting line is too darn long), consider Joe T.’s for brunch. You’ll still get the margaritas, chips, and salsa you came for, plus a longer list of menu options. Try the migas: a hot dish of corn tortilla strips sautéed with a Mexican tomato sauce then scrambled with eggs and shredded chicken. 4701 W. Fwy., 817-735-4900 Sunday 11 a.m.––4 p.m. Easily one of the liveliest brunch spots in town, Button’s provides a good time along with great food that will warm the soul. The buffet is the best deal here, but if you have a hankering for those famous chicken and waffles, you’ll have to order those as an entrée. And the mimosas are bottomless!

6

Brownstone

1208 W. Magnolia Ave., 817-916-5333 Sunday 10:30 a.m.––2 p.m. Diners can choose from omelets, sandwiches, crepes, quiche, and more. Standouts include the sweet and savory crepes, which include: one with ham and brie, one with wild mushroom, and one with peanut and banana drizzled with chocolate.

Culinary School of Fort Worth

Taverna

450 Throckmorton St., 817-885-7502 Saturday 11 a.m.––3 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.––3 p.m. Popular brunch items include the shrimp and asparagus omelet, eggs Benedict with crabmeat, and vanilla French toast served with Mascarpone cheese. Mimosas and Bellinis are no longer bottomless but are still inexpensive at just $1 each.

Cowtown Diner

305 Main St., 817-332-9555 Saturday & Sunday 10 a.m.––4 p.m. Eggs Benedict is the star on this downtown brunch menu. The poached egg dish is offered five different ways: with short ribs, steak fingers, smoked tenderloin, Texas chili, or even Thanksgiving turkey.

nigiri, maki, and more, so don’t be intimidated if you aren’t sushiliterate. The edamame (soy bean) hummus served with crunchy and slightly sweet Japanese cucumbers, carrots, and crisp crostini toast drizzled with olive oil is the perfect starter. The lettuce wraps come ready to build-yourown-masterpiece-style and are presented beautifully, with rows of options like the hummus, sesame rice noodles, more crisp Japanese cucumbers and carrots, and even cilantro and sunflower sprouts that actually make you understand what “green” tastes like. The wraps are accompanied by three delicious sauces: creamy cilantro, spicy peanut, and a yogurt curry. The Wasabi-seared ahi tuna plate is meaty and cooked to perfection.   Whether you want sushi or Blue Sushi Sake Grill to dine from the grill of more substantial meals such as beef tenderloin, potato-crusted salmon, and Anthosan’s chicken, or to Blue Sushi Sake Grill 3131 W. 7th St., FW stop in for happy hour and take 817-332-2583 advantage of the great prices on 11am-10pm Mon-Thur, 11am-12pm Fri-Sat both drinks and some munchies, (bar stays open later), 12pm-10pm Sun Blue Sushi Sake Grill delivers.

Tamales are a Texas tradition year-round, but when the holidays are upon us, tamales seem to be everywhere, thanks mainly to Las Posadas, a nine-day celebration from December 16-24 that is celebrated by feasting on homemade tamales (along with participating in other traditions). If getting your hands gooped in masa and corn husks isn’t your style –– but you love tamales –– head over to Hot Damn, Tamales! on the South Side. Since 1997, Hot Damn, Tamales! has been making authentic tamales (though not with lard) as well as tamales that stretch the imagination. The vegetarian-friendly wild mushroom tamale has an earthy and smoky flavor (courtesy of some chipotle peppers) and is rolled with Texas goat cheese. In the beef tenderloin tamale with jalapeños, onions, and garlic, Negro Modelo is used to cook the meat. Seafood and dessert tamales are also available.

Cour tesy Blue Sushi Sake Grill Facebook

he recently opened Blue Sushi Sake Grill had a buzz around Fort Worth for months before opening up. The Nebraska-based restaurant group has three locations throughout Omaha and could think of no better place to expand the Blue Sushi brand than right here in Fort Worth, the West 7th Street corridor specifically. Why would a successful sushi restaurant from Omaha want to bring its unique concept to Fort Worth? Simple: We love sushi! Piranha Killer Sushi, Sushi Axiom, MK’s Sushi, Hui Chuan, Tokyo Café, and many other sushi restaurants are staples in the city.   Walking into Blue Sushi demands that you to look up at the high, exposed industrial-style ceilings and make your way down the walls of blues and reds that are interrupted only by lighting and contemporary Oriental accents. The huge screens above the sushi bar play surfing scenes, with waves crashing, that are transportative.   The staff at Blue Sushi not only greets you with a smile but also is well versed on the offerings and will help with any decision: sashimi,

beat the clock So7 Bistro

Time in: 11:45 a.m.

Time out: 12:35 p.m.

The setting: Straight from France, Jean Michel Sakouhi has sprinkled North Texas with a handful of culinary delights, including The Balcony, Tramontana, Paris Bistro, The Vault, and more. Now with his recently opened So7 Bistro in the West 7th Street corridor, Sakouhi continues to spread his elegant penchant for fine food as well as design. Earthy reds, greens, and yellows cover the walls that extend to the second-floor bar level and added seating area. Huge glass windows on two of the walls frame the natural light perfectly throughout the day. Simply put: So7 Bistro is a contemporary space whose design adds to the gustatory experience. The menu: So7 Bistro’s ambiance never changes, but the menu does twice a day (and even more frequently on Saturdays). No matter when you come, you will be delighted by the offerings. Classic onion soup au gratin, calamari, and even escargot and pâté are a few of your hors d’oeuvres choices. The So7 Bistro salad of spinach, pear, feta, beets, and walnuts drizzled with fresh raspberry vinaigrette is a light option to start with before devouring a bistro

burger or grilled steak sandwich with caramelized onions, emmental cheese (think Swiss), horseradish, and fresh au jus that is mouthwatering. The steak was succulent, not dry, and came on a warm, buttery roll. One lunch entrée that seems simple to pass up needs to become a staple in your diet: So7 Bistro’s macaroni and cheese. So7’s perfectly al dente penne pasta covered in melted gruyere cheese with prosciutto (or bacon) was sinfully delicious, a decadent blend of flavors and textures. Vegetarians can ask to have it sans meat but also enjoy the assorted fresh vegetable plate or even any of the handmade pizzas. The verdict: So7 Bistro sounds like a fancy place. Though between the escargot and coq au vin (braised chicken cooked in wine), the selections are very affordable and will transport you to France for just a few American dollars.

Entertainment

a merry december F

ort Worth is a pretty Holidayshappy town. Sundance Square is always decked out in festive lights, and there are always a lot of tinsel-strewn things to do here every December. One event that’s become an annual tradition is the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Handel’s Messiah. With conductor David Thye and the Southwestern Seminary Master Chorale, the FWSO will perform the sacred masterpiece on Mon., Dec. 6, at Bass Performance Hall (525 Commerce St.). The message is spiritual, and the music is majestic enough to make a true believer out of the even coldest heart. For more information, visit www.fwso.org. Cowboy poet Michael Martin Murphey returns to Bass Hall this December.

INSIDE fort worth

Cowboy poet Michael Martin Murphey returns to Bass Hall to perform his Cowboy Christmas, in which he shares songs and poetry about the American frontier, all set against a twinkling seasonal backdrop. Cowboy Christmas is one night only: Tue., Dec. 14.   On Tue., Dec. 21, at the Bass, the FWSO will present Christmas with the Canadian Tenors, who will be making their American debut with an orchestra. New songs and traditional favorites will be performed. For more information on this or any other Bass Hall show, call the box office at 817-212-4280.   Through Sun., Dec. 26, at Jubilee Theatre (506 Main St.), catch God’s Trombones, a seasonal classic by Jubilee founder Rudy Eastman and composer Douglas Balentine. Based on the sermon poems of James Weldon Johnson, God’s Trombones is returning to the Jubilee stage after a several-years-long hiatus and promises to “lift your spirits and rock your soul,” according to the theatre company. For more information, visit www.jubileetheatre.org or call 817-338-4411.   Every year for the Holidays, The T pulls out all the stops, offering its annual bus tour of decorated homes. The tours this year are on Sat., Dec. 11, and Sun., Dec. 12. They start at Stockyards Station (130 E. Exchange Ave. in the Stockyards). Load-in for departure is from 6:30 p.m. ’til 7 p.m., but get there at 5:30 p.m. to enjoy pre-tour activities, including facepainting, a balloon artist, holiday music, hot chocolate, Christmas cookies, and visits with Santa. Ticket

price is only $5 per person and free for children 5 and younger. The tours take about an hour and a half and will pass by about 200 homes. No reservations required. A group of carolers will greet each bus during the tour, and costumed elves will distribute candy canes to the children. For more information, call 817-215-8600 or visit www.the-t.com.   New Year’s Eve is also pretty happenin’ in Fort Worth. Nearly every bar/restaurant has something special planned. At the Wild Rooster (3204 Camp Bowie Blvd.), Wayne “The Train” Hancock will perform with The Dan Family and Whiskey Dick. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. For more information, visit www.wildroosterbar.com or call 817-332-WILD.   And since New Year’s Eve is on a Friday this year, a lot of people who normally avoid the holiday might get the sticks out of their butts and hang around after work for a few cocktails –– and perhaps stay out late enough to ring in the new year. One part of town that’s sure to be rocking is the West 7th corridor. Just park your car somewhere over there and make the rounds on foot (and be sure to call a cab when you’re ready to head home). All within easy walking distance of one another are Lola’s Saloon (2736 W. 6th St.), The Pour House (2725 W. 7th St.), Shamrock Tavern (2708 W. 7th St.), Poag Mahone’s (700 Carroll St.), and 7th Haven (2700 W. 7th St.). And just a short walk away are Fred’s Texas Café (915 Currie St.), The Durty Crow (2801 Crockett St.), Capital Bar (3017 Morton St.), Magnolia Motor

The FWSO will present Christmas with the Canadian Tenors at the Bass Hall. Lounge (3005 Morton St.), Pop’s Safari (2929 Morton St.), The Grotto (517 University Dr.), and Delaney’s Irish Pub (2973 W. 7th St.). If you’re not afraid of traveling by car, you’ve got a few more options, including BoomerJack’s (2600 W. 7th St., Montgomery Plaza), Love Shack So7 (817 Matisse St.), M Lounge (835 Foch St.), and Chimy’s (1053 Foch St.).   Another part of town that’ll be hoppin’ is Magnolia Avenue. All of the independently owned restaurants over there will be filled with revelers, and the three nightspots –– The Chat Room Pub (1263 W. Magnolia), The Usual (1408 W. Magnolia), and Yucatan Taco Stand (909 W. Magnolia) –– will no doubt be packed.   Don’t forget about the TCU area. Though the students will be on break and ostensibly

away from campus, the nearcampus bars will still be running specials. Some popular hot spots include The Aardvark (2905 W. Berry St.), The Moon (2911 W. Berry St.), The Cellar (2916 W. Berry St.), the University Pub (3019 S. University Dr.), the Oui Lounge (3509 Bluebonnet Cir.), Tiff & Andi’s Place (3516 Bluebonnet Cir.), the Poop Deck (3560 W. Seminary Dr.), Rock Bottom (3468 Bluebonnet Cir.), Mellow Mushroom (3455 Bluebonnet Cir.), Fuzzy’s Taco Shop (2917 W. Berry St.), and Old Rip’s (3105 Cockrell Ave.).   And lastly there’s the West Side. All a short drive from one another are The Mule (5731 Locke Ave.), Oscar’s Pub (6323 Camp Bowie Blvd., Ste. 125), Baker Street Pub & Grille (6333 Camp Bowie Blvd.), and more than a few restaurants.

The T pulls out all the stops, offering its annual bus tour of decorated homes.
