t was only a few years ago that a good chunk of the West 7th area of Fort Worth was reduced to ruble. Giant cranes dotted the landscape and the beeping of industrial trucks filled the air. In an amazingly short amount of time, the entire area has been transformed into a cultural and entertainment hub. Now, the area once occupied by auto shops, warehouses, and a long-defunct department store is thriving.

Montgomery Plaza and the So7 developments embody the area’s transformation. Montgomery Plaza, was once a historical, albeit empty and weather-damaged department store building but now boasts some of the hottest retail, residential, and restaurant spaces in the city, and has become the new blueprint on how to preserve important parts of the Fort’s history while attracting new businesses and residents. Just across the street, the So7 development has already attracted some of the city’s most established

restaurateurs and promising retail names. The two developments are a huge part of what has made the West 7th area the fastest-growing retail and restaurant setting in one of the fastest growing cities in the United States.

Now in its fifth year, Montgomery Plaza is well established as a retail and restaurant hot-spot. Anchored by a Super Target and just minutes away from the Fort Worth Cultural District, the plaza filled with cool shops and restaurants in short order. Now it’s like a one-stop shop for everything you might need or want.

The restaurant scene is eclectic and well-reputed. BoomerJack’s Grill & Bar serves up classic Americana cuisine in a casual and fun setting. The menu features their signature half-pound burgers, freshcut fries, cold beer, and banana pudding. There are also more than a dozen huge flat-screen televisions that always have the game on.

A second Sushi Axiom location is coming soon to Montgomery Plaza.

American cuisine with swanky décor, exotic drinks, and allnight salsa dancing. Mac’s on 7th serves an eclectic menu of steaks, seafood, and prime rib with a Southwestern/Cajun influence. Everything is made from scratch, and the wine list is to die for. Pei Wei Asian Diner has some new twists on classic Asian fair. Coming soon to the Montgomery Plaza restaurant row is Sushi Axiom, which offers Japanese fusion in modern setting.

For anyone who just wants a snack, a nice drink, or a great glass of wine, the Plaza is also home to a Starbucks and Wine Styles, which offers hundreds of bottles to take home and tastings.

The shops at Montgomery Plaza have something for everyone. For the best in high fashion the city has to offer, Dolce Vita offers boutique clothing and accessories in an unpretentious setting. Uncommon Angles is one of the most unique galleries in town, featuring hand-crafted artisan hand-blown glass pieces and sculptural ceramics, and a gallery of exciting, new art. Edible Arrangements has both beautiful and delicious gift ideas.

Montgomery Plaza will soon welcome Innovations Medical Spa, which specializes in the best treatments available for skin care, body shaping, and other cosmetic procedures. Many of the procedures practiced at the Spa will not be available anywhere else in the country.

Just across the street, the So7 complex offers a striking view of both the Trinity River and downtown Fort Worth. In just a short amount of time, the development has attracted some of the city’s culinary heavy-hitters.

Celebrity chef Tim Love’s Love Shack So7 has already been turning out award-winning burgers in a fun patio setting for several months now. Love’s party patio has live music, yard sports (like horseshoes and washers), and a lively crowd.

On the surface, the Love Shack appears to be just a laidback burger joint. But anyone who is familiar with the Chef’s meticulousness and tastes, understands that the quality of ingredients and creativity of the food put Love Shack So7 in a class of its own. The burgers are a combination of prime tenderloin and prime brisket and are ground fresh every day.

Another veteran of the Fort Worth culinary scene will soon make his mark on the So7 complex. Jean Michelle Sakouhi, who previously owned The Balcony and The Vault, will open his latest restaurant, So7 Bistro, in late January or early February. So7 Bistro will feature seasonal ingredients in a casual setting. Sakouhi said that the location was ideal for his modern French-American restaurant.

“It’s really nice, and it’s brand new,” he said. “I see a lot of young people living around there.”

The burgeoning development also features a growing list of one-of-a-kind shops. The Ft. Worth Running Co. is a family-owned business that offers the best running apparel and training in Fort Worth. The staff has more than a dozen years of experience in coaching and was awarded “Best Racing Coach in Texas” by White Rock Marathon in 2007.

Chester by Glenn Arthur features some of the most luxurious boutique clothes in the country. The South African designer uses only the finest handcrafted suede and leather from Bali, Indonesia. His collection includes unique shawls and wraps, intricately designed jackets, pants, shirts, and accessories. Arthur’s collections are also found in places like New York, London, Aspen, and Monte Carlo. He employs natives of Bali, who have handed down their craft over generations.

The restaurant scene is eclectic and well-reputed.

Tillman’s Roadhouse Frito pie made with venison chili, blood orange margaritas, and Lynyrd Skynyrd on the overhead speakers combine for a rocking fun time at West 7th’s new Tillman’s Roadhouse restaurant. Joining us from Oak Cliff, where the original is located, Tillman’s will easily become the new goto spot for special occasion dining, patio lounging, and apps and drinks before a night out in Fort Worth.

Smack in the middle of the flashy new West 7th developments, the restaurant offers classic Texas favorites prepped gourmet-style. For example, the house burger is made with sirloin-foie gras and paired with truffled goat cheese tater tots. The venison chili features chunky tomatoes, white cheddar cheese, and scallion greens plated with an

open bag of Fritos. S’mores, featuring housemade maple-, orange-, and coffee-flavored marshmallows, are assembled tableside over an open flame.

Everything is served by waiters wearing plaid pearl-snap shirts, jeans, and cowboy boots, reminding you of Tillman’s touted “come-asyou-are” environment.

If you’re as impressed with the décor as we were, note that the vintage chandeliers, elegant damask-print walls, and cabin-like stacked logs above the bar were all the work of designer and Tarrant County native Rob Dailey.

Probably not the best spot to catch a big game, Tillman’s has three medium-sized flat screen TVs that hang amid a wall of pretty pictures. All are visible from only one end of the bar. However, the music played in the restaurant is a surprising perk. At dinner, we found ourselves quietly singing along to Foreigner, Tom Petty,

Al Green, and even Boy George. Maybe it was the salted margaritas that had been hit with a good dose of Patrón.

Regarding the service, waiters were nothing but nice, although our appetizer ordered at the bar was forgotten. But the sweet potato, parmesan, and purple potato trio of fries served with house-made catsup and horseradish pickle mayo were well worth the wait by the time they arrived to our dinner table. Enough to easily feed four, the extras went home in to-go boxes.

Make reservations early, like at least a few days before, especially if you’re hoping to visit on a Friday or Saturday

night. Otherwise you can arrive before dinner is served at 5:30 p.m., and the hostesses will do their best to get you in. Like we said, Tillman’s is Fort Worth’s newest go-to spot.

The Movie Tavern at West 7th is open and serving up great food and flicks. A must-have from the menu is the Monte Cristo Wrap ($8.50). Stuffed with hearty portions of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, the wrap is fried until golden brown, sprinkled with powdered sugar, and served with raspberry jam. Part confection, part sandwich, the concoction is a symphony of sweet and sour. Coupled with a side of fries and an ice-cold beer or beverage of your choice, the Monte Cristo is a surefire award-winner. Don’t have time for a movie?

The setting: Part family restaurant, part sports bar, Jake’s offers plenty for both the appetite and eyes. Wherever you look, there’s either a big-screen TV or an attractive waitress to gawk at. The place is partitioned into several compartments, has upstairs seating, and features a décor of decorative-stone walls and soft-green wooden planks, giving the space a calming aspect even when it’s hopping.

The menu: Established in 1985 and with locations all over the Northeast and Florida, Jake’s chooses to keep its menu vast but simple: burgers, sides, and salads. Sure, you can start off with Jake’s sinus-clearing Jalapeño Bottle Caps ($3.95) or decadent Cheddar Fries ($5.25) and end your meal with a refreshing Oreo Shake ($2.95) or sweeet Bananas Foster Bites ($2.95). But just make sure to save enough room for the beef. The Jake’s Special ($5.99) is a massive, succulent double-meat cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, and, adding just the right kick, Thousand Island dressing. Add a side of seasoned Jumpin’ Jake Fries ($1.79) or, for just $1.75, slightly crunchy Beer-Battered

The service: Everywhere you look, friendly and charming waitresses are around to assist you. Whether you plan on sitting casually at the bar or having a party, they’re always smiling and are quick and efficient (and nonintrusive).

The verdict: The newest burger joint in downtown Fort Worth is definitely one to please meat-lovers and vegetarians alike.

very January is Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo time, and while some kids are genuinely interested in the cowboy stuff -- the bull riding and calf roping -- most little guys and girls are all about the Midway. Spreading across six acres on the east side of the Will Rogers Coliseum, the stock show and rodeo’s amusement park is kind of like a mini-Six Flags. There are some adult rides, like the MegaDrop -- a free-

he first month of the year here means the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, which means a lot of partying, a lot of spectatin’, and a lot more partying. And not all of the 2010 stock show fun will be happening around the Will Rogers Memorial Center, the site of the event that runs from January 15 through February 7.

The rest of downtown will also be swinging. And for good reason: You can’t limit a good cowboy event in Cowtown! to just a few square miles, right?

In addition to the bull riding and the calf roping and all of the other feats of cowboy awesomeness, the stock show and rodeo also has something new to offer, namely the WinStar Rodeo Roadhouse concert series.

Slated to perform is a slew of marquee stars, including Billy Joe Shaver (Fri., Jan. 22), Joe Ely (Fri., Jan. 15), The Killdares (Sat., Jan. 16), Kelly Willis (Sat., Jan. 23), The Derailers (Sun. Jan. 24), Gary P. Nunn (Thu., Jan. 28), Ray Wylie Hubbard (Sun., Jan. 31), Chris Duarte (Fri., Feb. 5), and Dale Watson (Sun., Feb. 7). Several Fort Worth boys are also on tap: Brad Thompson (Sat., Jan. 23; Fri., Feb. 5), Kurt South (Sun., Jan. 24), and Phil Pritchett and his band (Thu., Jan. 28).

The area by the Will Rogers complex also will be hosting some high culture in January. From the 26th through the 31st, Casa Manana (3101 W. Lancaster Ave.) will present The Color Purple, a poignant musical based on the 1982 Pulitzer Prizewinning novel by Alice Walker and 1985 Oscar-nominated film by Steven Spielberg. Set in a rural area in the early 1900s, the story revolves around Celie, a young African-American woman who “triumphs over tremendous odds to find joy in life and her true inner beauty.” The musical was nominated for 11 Tony Awards when it came out in 2005, and the score –– featuring a mix of jazz, blues, and gospel –– earned a Grammy nomination. The “low” (or “low”-ish) part will come from what specifically will be performed by the world-renowned orchestra in the world-renowned venue. From Fri., Jan. 15, through Sun., Jan. 17 at the Bass (525 Commerce St.), that “low” will be disco music. For Disco Days and Boogie Nights, the FWSO will perform classical versions of such disco-era stringed-instrument-heavy hits as the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive,” Gloria Gaynor’s anthemic “I Will Survive,” and many, many more.

On Sat., Jan. 23, at the Bass, the “low” will come courtesy of The King. Elvis Presley will be the subject of a tribute show by one of the best Elvis impersonators in the biz, Kraig Parker, who has the looks, the voice, the moves –– and the clothes –– to make you think you’re back in Vegas circa 1974.

The place located in The Tower is also one of the handsomest sports bars in town, perfect for either a night out with the guys (or gals) or a date.
