Hanging

Gingerbread Houses A simple and fun take on the traditional Gingerbread house, hang these on your tree or give to family and friends as a gift.

Ingredients

Method

100g butter 1 cup, firmly packed brown sugar 1 cup treacle 2 eggs, lightly whisked 4 cups plain flour 1 cup self-raising flour 1 tablespoon ground ginger 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 2 egg whites 2 2/3 cup pure icing sugar 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

Place butter, sugar and treacle in a small saucepan over low heat stirring until the butter melts and sugar dissolves. Set aside for 10 mins to cool slightly. Combine butter mixture and egg in a large bowl. Sift the combined flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and bicarbonate of soda over the butter mixture. Stir until well combined. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead until smooth. Shape into a disc and cover with plastic. Place in the fridge for 1 hour to rest. Preheat oven to 180째C. Line 2 trays with baking paper. Divide the dough into 2 portions. Roll out each portion on a lightly floured surface until 5mm thick. Cut dough using a house-shaped cutter and place on baking trays. Make small holes big enough for a piece of string at the top of each biscuit. Bake for 5 mins or until golden. Set aside on the trays to cool before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Place egg whites in a bowl and lightly beat until foamy. Sift over icing sugar and stir until smooth. Stir in lemon juice. Spoon icing into a piping bag and pipe onto the biscuits to decorate. Set aside for 1 hour to set. To finish thread a piece of string through the holes and hang to display. Makes 30 (approx.)
