Get out of Town As a town that began during the 1850s when a significant amount of gold was found, Heathcote seems to have struck gold once more with it’s world renowned wine industry. Italian Mussels

The perfect recipe full of lovely authentic Italian flavours to be enjoyed on a lazy afternoon.

Ingredients

Method

1 kg of mussels, cleaned

To make the sauce, heat the olive oil in a large saucepan, add the onions, celery, garlic, basil and bouquet Garni, cook over a low heat for 5 minutes or until softened but not browned.

1/2 cup dry white wine 1 tbsp olive oil

2 onions, chopped

1 celery stalk, chopped

1 garlic clove, chopped

1 tsp chopped fresh basil, plus extra to garnish Bouquet Garni 1 tbsp tomato paste

500gms ripe tomatoes, peeled and chopped Salt and pepper 1 tsp sugar

Mix in the tomato paste, tomatoes, salt, pepper and sugar and simmer gently for 30 minutes.

Put the mussels into a casserole dish with the wine over high heat and bring to the boil. Cook for a few minutes only, until the mussels have opened, stirring frequently to ensure they are cooked.

Pour off the cooking liquid, discard any mussels that have not opened and return the opened mussels, in their shells, to the casserole dish

Pour the hot tomato sauce over the mussels and heat through. Sprinkle with chopped basil and serve at once.

Being such a small suburb in size, Bonbeach is limited when it comes to food options, with just a couple of cafés and take away options. However, the neighbouring suburb of Chelsea offers an extensive range of dining establishments for all tastes and times of the day.

Bonbeach has just the one school; Bonbeach Primary School, located on Breeze Street. Bonbeach Pre-school is also situated on the same site. For secondary education, Patterson River Secondary College is located in nearby Carrum.

SHOPPING

The small strip of shops opposite the train station on Nepean Highway offers a selection of specialty retailers and services, as well as cafés.
