Our Client St John’s Cathedral, Brisbane A renowned Brisbane landmark, St John’s Cathedral attracts a diverse congregation. The Ministry seeks to bring Anglican tradition into dialogue with today’s issues and needs. The Brief A lack of comfort and flexibility were the driving factors behind the decision to replace existing pews and chapel chairs at St John’s Cathedral with new, more comfortable and versatile chairs. Furniture Solution Howe 40/4 chairs in walnut veneer were the Ministry’s chair of choice. The considerations of the ministry were manifold: Comfort. Legendary for its comfort, the 40/4 chair has been in production since 1964. Longevity. The chairs carry a 15 year warranty. Servicing requirements are carried out locally by Living Edge. Amenity. The chairs can be linked to form rows to prevent unwanted movement. When stacked in trolleys, 160 chairs can be neatly stored using just 1.7m2 of floor space. Overseas Experience. St Paul’s Cathedral in London has had 2,500 Howe 40/4 chairs since 1973. The chair is also used in Cathedrals in Salisbury, Oxford, and in many other eminent locations across the globe.
“The chairs allow the cathedral to be used in flexible configurations... and provide the opportunity to develop reflective spaces and places for prayer focus in the chapels.” – Reverend Peter Catt, St Johns Cathedral

Our Client St Barnabas Church, Sydney Founded in 1850, the original St Barnabas chapel was the oldest in the inner-city suburb of Glebe. Sadly, the building was destroyed by fire in 2006. Leading Australian architects Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp were enlisted to design a new church for a modern city, and in 2006, St Barnabas became the city’s first major new church building in 100 years. The new chapel incorporates elements of the old building within a modern, calm and light space. The Brief The parish was looking for chairs to be used within their flexible 600-seat worship space. They wanted furniture that had a small individual footprint, to allow as many seats as possible within the space. They needed to be comfortable enough that elderly parishioners could sit without discomfort for extended periods of time. It was essential that the chairs compliment the aspirational interiors. The Furniture Solution
Howe’s 40/4 chairs in ash were chosen for their functionality and design credentials. Tactile. “Not only is wood beautiful and reflects the light in our interior spaces, but there is also something about it which is inviting. The material is tactile, it makes people want to see and touch it,” says St Barnabas’s. The material also brought warmth to the neutral colour palette. Small in size, big on comfort. It was critical that the width between the linked chairs was as narrow as possible, to maximise the number of seats. Generous and comfortable without padding, the 40/4 chairs were an ideal solution.
Stackable and robust. Because the space was multipurpose, the chairs needed to be easily stacked. “We looked at a number of chairs across the market, and the way in which the Howe 40/4 stacks so compactly and becomes so easy to manoeuvre in and out of storage was absolutely crucial to us,” says Reverend Paget. Enduring. Renowned for longevity and with a 10-year conditional warranty, the 40/4 chair has given the community peace of mind.
