Michael Craig-Martin has been referred to as the godfather of ‘Brit Art’ due to his influence on a younger generation of artists whom he taught at Goldsmiths College in London, including Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Gary Hume and Julian Opie. He has exhibited extensively around the world, becoming widely known for his vibrantly coloured paintings and silkscreen prints of everyday objects depicted in his distinctive graphic shorthand. He is committed to the idea that the made or constructed world helps to define who we are and the moment we are living in. Commenting on art and design, Craig-Martin has said: “I increasingly think that invention is the realm of design, and observation is the realm of art”. Craig-Martin was elected into the Royal Academy, London, in 2006 and was knighted for his services to the arts in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2016.

Antony Gormley is one of the world’s most prolific and acclaimed contemporary artists. For four decades, his practice has unwaveringly focussed on the dynamic of the body in space. Underlying his works on paper, sculptures and expansive site-specific installations, is a profound engagement and questioning of how the inside of the body relates to the outside, and where human beings stand in relation to both our immediate surrounds and the cosmos beyond. Gormley has achieved significant international notoriety with a number of large-scale public artworks including: Angel of the North (1998), a twenty metre tall, fifty four metre wide, steel sculpture of an angel overlooking the A1 motorway in England; Event Horizon (2007-), thirty one life-size anatomically correct sculptures cast from the artist’s own body originally displayed in London, then in New York, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Hong Kong; and Inside Australia (2003), fifty one metal figures installed on the vast sodium crust of Lake Ballard, Western Australia. Antony Gormley won the Turner Prize in 1994. He was knighted in 2014.

Every… Bernd and Hilla Becher Gable Sided Houses (2008) Idris Khan emerged as a force in contemporary art and new conceptual photography soon after graduating from Royal College of Art, London, in 2004. He gained immediate attention for his layered images derived from multiple photographs and scans of key philosophical and theological texts, seminal musical scores, and iconic artworks sourced from art history. Every… Page of the Holy Quran (2004), for example, condenses every page of the Quran into a single undecipherable but sublime image; whereas Every… page of Susan Sontag’s Book ‘On Photography’ (2004) reads as a more basic attempt to somehow inject knowledge into a photographic image. At the core of Khan’s practice is the metaphysical collapse of time into a single moment, the desire to compress or highlight memory, and an elevation of poetics over politics. A major public commission by Khan was unveiled at the new Memorial Park in Abu Dabi in 2016. The New Art Gallery Walsall presented a retrospective of Khan’s work in 2017. He was awarded an OBE for his services to art the same year.

Fox Talbot’s Articles of Glass (bottoms up) (2017) Cornelia Parker is a brilliantly inventive and acclaimed British artist. She came to prominence 30 years ago with Thirty Pieces of Silver (1988) in which she flattened a selection of silver-plated objects including teapots, spoons, trophies and musical instruments under a steamroller, then suspended them from the ceiling so they appeared to defy gravity, levitating just off the floor. She likened this work to placing a coin on a railway track, where a destructive act can create an alternative imaginative currency. In the three decades since, Parker has consistently captured the imagination with a remarkable body of work underpinned by her beautifully poetic and oddly humorous view of the world. Subsequent projects have included getting the army to blow up a garden shed, resurrecting the charred embers of a church which had been struck by lightning, firing pearls through a shotgun and placing a piece of the moon at the bottom of a lake.

Cornelia Parker was named UK Election Artist for 2017. She won the Artist of the Year Apollo Award in 2016 and was awarded the Roof Garden Commission at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. In 2010 she received an OBE and was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts. She was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1997. Her works are held in numerous major collections worldwide including Tate, London, and MoMA, New York. In 2019/2020 the MCA in Sydney will stage a major retrospective of Cornelia Parker’s work, featuring over forty | living edge works, her entire career. filter fine art spanning

Animal Spirit (pink) (2016) Grayson Perry is widely known for his ceramic vases, tapestries, elaborate prints and cross-dressing. His work dissects prejudices, hierarchies, stereotypes, social class, fashion, popular culture and the contemporary art scene. In 2012, Perry was among the British cultural icons selected by artist Peter Blake to appear in a new version of his most famous artwork – The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band album cover. Perry has held numerous solo exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world including the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2002), The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh (2006), The British Museum, London (2011/2), and MCA Australia (2015/6). He was awarded the Turner Prize in 2003 and appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2013.

Gold Triple Pop (2009) Gavin Turk is a British born, internationally renowned artist. He pioneered many forms of contemporary British sculpture now taken for granted, including the painted bronze, the waxwork, the recycled art-historical icon and the use of rubbish in art. Turk’s artworks deal with issues of authenticity, value and identity. Concerned with the ‘myth’ of the artist, originality and the ‘authorship’ of a work, Turk’s engagement with this modernist, avant-garde debate stretches back to the ‘readymades’ of Marcel Duchamp, and explores how particular pieces of art achieve masterpiece status and how artists themselves become celebrities. Turk’s wide-ranging practice often incorporates iconic images of figures taken from popular culture and art historical sources. A series of life-size waxworks incorporate the artist assuming various poses as different characters, including Sid Vicious, Joseph Beuys and Che Guevara. Turk’s work has been collected and exhibited by many major museums and galleries throughout the world. Prestel published Turk’s first major monograph in 2013, showcasing more than two decades of his work, and in 2016/7 Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery, London, staged a comprehensive retrospective of his work.

At Night (2010) Tracey Emin is one of the most talked about artists working today. Using all aspects of her life, she turns intimate autobiography into broader statements about sex, love, death, freedom and everyday life. Her work has taken the form of diaristic or confessional drawings, paintings, films, sculptures and written stories, all of which convey the same combination of frustration, pain, compassion and wit. Emin was appointed professor of drawing at London’s Royal Academy in 2011 and was awarded a CBE in 2013. She represented Britain at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 and has recently completed a major public commission in the heart of Sydney’s CBD comprising 60 strategically placed handmade bronze birds.

Damien Hirst erupted onto the international art scene in the early 1990s and has captivated audiences ever since with artworks that explore beauty, love, faith, desire, death, science and religion. From sharks and cows preserved in tanks of formaldehyde to diamond-encrusted platinum skulls, his works challenge contemporary belief systems, tracing the uncertainties that lie at the heart of human experience. Hirst won the Turner Prize in 1995 and remains one of contemporary art’s greatest provocateurs, continually coming up with new ways to compel and excite the viewer.
