Title:​​ “Teaching with Authority” Key Scripture: Mark 1:22 (NKJV) And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. SPS: To show that we can speak with authority when we speak the words of Christ. Supporting Scriptures: Matthew 16:18, 1 Timothy 2:4, John 14:26, 1 Corinthians 8:1 Introduction: One thing that set Christ apart from other teachers of His day was the fact that He spoke with authority. Read ​Mark 1:22 If we speak from our own opinions, thoughts and experience, our words our only ours. But if we we rely on God’s Word and speak from God’s Word, then we can speak with the same authority as Christ. 1. The Word is our source of strength a. Mat 16:18​​ And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 2. God desires us to grow in grace and knowledge. a. 1 Timothy 2:4 ​(NKJV)...​who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. b. Knowledge is important to God c. But knowledge can be our downfall. i. 1 Corinthians 8:1 ​(NKJV) Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. d. If we resist the temptation to go from ​learning ​to ​teaching with ourselves as the authority​​, we can be a powerful tool in God’s hands 3. If we look to Him, and defer to Him, He will stir up our memory of what we have learned from Him! a. John 14:26 ​(NKJV) "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. b. This is true if we are giving sermonettes, sermons, or just speaking to our neighbor c. If we are pointing attention towards God’s Word and not our own “authority”, then we can actually speak with the same authority as Christ - since we are speaking His words! Conclusion:

When Christ was confounding His listeners with the words that He spoke, and the authority with which He spoke, remember that He was speaking the Father’s words! (John 14:24). In other words, His authority came from the Father. We can follow His example in our conduct, and in our teaching. If we speak His words, we are speaking the truth, and we can speak with authority - not ours, but His!
