Title: The Calling of a Sinful Man SPS: To emphasize how central “belief/conviction” is for us as a follower of Christ. Key Scripture: Luke 5:8 Supporting Scriptures: Luke 4:33-40, Matthew 16:23, Luke 22:61, Psalms 62:8 Introduction: Read Luke 1:1-8 Why did Peter say “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!"? If we do not understood what Peter understood, we are not truly grasping the core of what it means to be a follower of Christ. 1. Peter’s example a. Peter had already seen Christ do miracles. See Luke 4:33-40. Note the previous chapter where Christ healed the sick and cast out demons. Peter's own Mother was healed. b. Luke 5:5 Simon questioned Christ when He gave him some instructions. c. When Christ’s instructions resulted in a miracle, Peter recognize how fundamentally wrong his attitude toward Christ was - how limited his view of Christ was. Though he had seen Christ’s power in one scenario, he was not able to extend his trust in Christ to a different scenario. d. When he realized how fearfully wrong it was to literally argue his doubts with God, it horrified him. e. This was a lesson that he confronted again later in his time with Christ. i. Matthew 16:23 (NKJV) But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men." ii. Luke 22:61 (NKJV) And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." 2. Us a. What will it take for us to really grasp and believe “reality”? Peter recognizes how his lack of faith was fundamental to his relationship with Christ. b. Peter’s recognition of his weakness was keyed to his recognition of his lack of conviction and belief in God.

c. Key issue here is “belief”. Peter saw Christ do miracles in one scenario, but doubted Him in another. Do we do the same? Do we have faith in God in academically, but don’t translate that into the rest of our life? d. Can we recognize - and be absolutely humbled - by the limitations we put on our trust, belief and conviction in God? Conclusion Psalms 62:8 (NKJV) Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God [is] a refuge for us. Selah
