SPRING INTO SUMMER

IN WOODBRIDGE

W

ith warmer weather in prospect, there’s a real energy around town, which is reflected in this, our sixth edition (where does the time go?) This issue is crammed full of stories about interesting people, including the very talented Clarissa Vincent. Not only is she an amazing musician, Clarissa set off on a single-handed voyage of discovery, and now calls Ferry Quay home. Details of her adventure are on page 13. Few towns can boast their very own violin maker, as we do, and so it was lovely to spend time with the talented Russell Stowe in his Market Hill shop. Russell tells all in this edition’s Movers and Shakers on page nine. The picture of his cellos, taken by photographer John Ferguson, has made one of our favourite front covers yet. On the home front, we’ve been talking with local interiors specialist Philippa Rudd. The story of her Seckford Street renovation can be found on pages six and seven. A firm believer that our homes should tell a story of who we are, Philippa also shares her budget-friendly tips for giving your property that wow factor when selling up. With the festival season almost upon us, we’ve put together a one-stop guide on page 25. It gives a snapshot of local festivals including the town’s very own SpringFest, organised by DJ Marco Spina and his partner Ian Matthews. As Clare Perkins takes over as Mayor of Woodbridge, she tells us her plans for what is an exciting year ahead for the town, as well as her passion for fashion, and working with Sir Norman Hartnell. Her fascinating story, including how love brought her to Woodbridge, can be found on page 34. Happy reading!

Inge even had to carry her own water, bedding and food

SUPERMUM Inspirational Woodbridge mum Inge van Tuinen recently ran a staggering six marathons in five days in the Sahara Desert to raise much-needed funds for Ipswich Hospital’s neonatal ward. Dutch-born Inge took part in the Marathon des Sables, otherwise known as the toughest foot race on earth, to raise £10,000 for the specialist unit where her prematurely-born daughter, Emma, was cared for back in 2009. The super-fit mum-of-two, who has been running marathons for the last four years, completed the 251km multi-stage ultra-endurance challenge back in April. Not only do competitors have to run across tough desert and mountainous Moroccan terrain in stifling 45–50°C temperatures but they have to be completely self-sufficient, except for a ration of 11 litres of water a day. “You don’t really sleep very well for several days, and mixed with that you’re carrying everything from your food, clothes, sleeping stuff and first aid kit on your back,” smiles Inge. “Lots of interesting life lessons were learned by stripping back everything that we normally have in society. It was an amazing experience and you’re going through it with around 1,200 other people. Everybody goes back to basics. By day four you’re used to the fact that there’s no toilets and that there’s nowhere to hide either! Some may be exhausted and some may have injuries but it was amazing how supportive and helpful people were, even if they didn’t speak the same language – there were 52 different countries being represented in the race. Everyone just pulled together.” Inge says the low point for her came on day two. “I felt totally exhausted and it was about 48-50 degrees and we had some difficult terrain that day and quite steep inclines of up to 800m to climb – unfortunately I fell down and injured my hip and backside and that was halfway through the day which really knocked my confidence. By the end of the day I was in tears thinking; ‘what have I done?’ But there were some amazing runners who kept saying; ‘look where you are,’ and ‘stay positive!’ And that started to trickle through and really helped me!” Inge says she was overjoyed when she finished the gruelling race – not least because she finished in the top 5 per cent of female finishers. “It was an amazing achievement and an experience I’ll never forget,” she says. Now she’s busy organising a pub quiz at the King’s Head on May 21 as she’s still got another £3,000 to go to reach her £10,000 target. “There will be teams of six and if people want to get in touch with me to book tables, that would be great,” she says. “I’m quite desperate to hit the £10,000 mark as that will buy the vital equipment they need for pre-term simulation for babies. Plus it would pay for chairs for the feeding room for the mums to help make them more comfortable.” Inge, who underwent an emergency caesarean when she was 28 weeks pregnant with Emma, seven, says her gratitude for Ipswich Hospital’s neonatal unit runs deep. “During the race when it got difficult and when I questioned why I was doing it, I’d think of all we’d gone through. I nearly lost my life with my little one being born that early – that was the spur that kept me going.” l To book a table at the quiz, call Inge on 07726 871587. To donate money for the Ipswich Hospital neonatal unit, go to www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ Inge-Mission-marathondessables l The town’s Tony Moorcroft completed the London Marathon, raising almost £6,000 for the St Nicholas Hospice which included hosting a fabulous charity event at the Tea Hut. A LOT FOR YOUR MONEY Property buyers in Woodbridge are flocking to Goldings Auction this month (May) to see who will snap up Lot 14. The Old Bakery (pictured below) on Chapel Street has caused a stir with its tantalising guide price starting at £125,000. The former bakery, which comes complete with its own parking space, offers two bedrooms with a monopitched single-storey section and a two-storey brick addition. Director Luke Golding says the property has attracted enormous attention. “We get phone calls every hour asking us all sorts of things – namely, can they buy before it before the auction! This property is triggering people’s imagination, we’re hearing lots of ideas on how to develop it,” he says. “One caller was even talking about designing a glass-panelled interior garden! The neighbouring property has just been sold for £1.6million. You can’t get a better location than this - you just walk past Shire Hall down the hill and take the first left onto Chapel Street then walk 50 yards and the bakery is on your left.” Clearly this hot property will go for well over the asking price though Luke couldn’t guess what. “It depends how the planning department react to initial enquiries,” he says. “People are looking at adding additional floors and doing all sorts but if planning tells them; ‘no chance’ then that will affect the price.” Luke adds: “If I had a hundred of these properties, I could sell them a hundred times over,” he says. “Prices are going crazy in the town.” l For further details go to www.goldingsauctions.co.uk

But mum is just heartbroken.” And to make matters worse, the family say some ‘missing’ posters they had put up around the local area have recently been ripped down. “That was the worst thing,” says Christie. “It’s as if someone doesn’t want the word to get out about Stanley. We found posters ripped down and scrunched up on the floor. Someone knows something. They need to do the right thing and come forward.” Angie added: “I’ve lived in Woodbridge for 30 years and can’t believe someone could do something like this. WHO’S TAKEN OUR DOG? Heartbroken Woodbridge resident Angie Hill has made an emotional appeal to the town to help find her beloved dog Stanley. The rare teacup chihuahua was stolen from a small park on Beresford Drive just minutes after Stanley escaped from her back garden in Nelson Way. “I don’t know how he got out,” she says. “But he’s like a baby to me, the whole family is devastated. When Stanley disappeared from her back garden on April 12th she was just minutes behind him. Two local girls who were in the nearby park saw Stanley running around and actually picked him up but then a boy on a black BMX bike came up and claimed the dog was his. A HOME FOR KEEPS Passionate about interiors, Philippa Rudd welcomes us into her recently renovated Seckford Street house Pictures by John Ferguson

ince cutting her renovation teeth on a Victorian villa on the Thoroughfare last year, Philippa Rudd has steamed ahead on her latest project: a total revamp of her old Seckford Street property, a former bakery, in just six short months. “The house on the Thoroughfare was a great project, but this one’s for keeps,” says Philippa. Having returned to her hometown of Woodbridge in 2015 after living in Portugal for 20 years, Philippa has completely immersed herself in property and interiors. Working as a residential sales consultant at Neals Estate Agents since the new year, she is also a member of the Home Staging Network, helping sellers present their house or flat in the best possible light. Although the Seckford Street property had been on the market for more than a year, Philippa instantly saw its potential. “I was looking for a house that needed lots of work, but which could become home and a new start for me and my daughters, Matilda and Isabel, when they came back from uni and boarding school, respectively. This ticked all the boxes. “As I walked in, I was instantly buzzing with ideas, but this wasn’t just a cosmetic makeover. This house needed everything doing.” When asked about the property’s star qualities, Philippa quickly replies:

“The view – our garden, albeit small, overlooks the beautiful grounds of The Abbey; its central location; and its potential. It was all of those in equal measure.” Renovations included remodelling the underutilised space by the front door to create a small but perfectly formed utility area, as well as taking space from the second bedroom to accommodate an en suite for the master bedroom. Complete with sliding doors that lead onto a terrace, the main bedroom is flooded with light, and affords views across the Abbey grounds. “I’m particularly thrilled with the glass balustrades from Ipswich-based Vista Glass, as they bring an instant contemporary look and feel. The existing 1970s wrought ironwork had to go,” smiles Philippa. Features like the marble fireplace in the lounge also appealed. “The previous owner had moved this fire surround with her from three previous homes, so I was absolutely thrilled when she kindly agreed it could stay with me. “Initially, I considered removing the bay windows in the lounge, to replace them with bi-fold doors. Now painted my ‘go-to’ RAL 7016 anthracite grey, I couldn’t be more pleased that they stayed, as they give a real uniqueness to the room. “I then had the door to the garden and all the window shutters made in

the same colour, to complete the look and feel.” The pièce de résistance is the stunning Crittall-effect window between the kitchen and lounge. “I knew it would transform the whole house. Panels of nine glass panes are very often used in period properties, so it’s in keeping with the original architecture, and it lets so much light through into the kitchen.” A keen upcycler, Philippa constantly looks at ways to give life to old pieces. “The kitchen cabinets were here when I arrived, but they’ve been spray-painted inside and out, and now look brand new. “Never about one particular style or trend, I’m a great fan of eBay.

KITCHEN RENOVATION: BEFORE AND AFTER

“Your home should be filled with pieces that tell the story of who you are” “I’ve also found lovely eclectic bits at Richard Rush at The Granary Antiques in Hasketon, and the-barn.co at Friday Street. And I’m always picking up great pieces in Vanil and 10 Church Street.” In her spare time, she loves working on ad hoc interior design projects. “It’s never the size of the property that appeals to me, but the synergy between the owners and how they want to live in the space. Your home should be filled with pieces that tell the story of who you are.” l Philippa’s Instagram: matisadecor or email: matisadecor@gmail.com

PHILIPPA’S TIPS FOR SELLING YOUR HOUSE l Declutter – It’s incredibly simple, but it can prove so effective at increasing the appeal of your home. l Give rooms clear definitions – Prospective buyers will need to know how their lives could best be accommodated in your property. l Create a focal point in each room – Something to draw the eye, like a large picture on the wall or a vase of fresh flowers, instantly creates a positive feature and detracts from any negative ones the room may have. l Freshen up the garden or terrace – A few pots or lanterns make a huge difference, helping to transform even the smallest spaces.

AND SHAKERS Left: Russell boasts 30 years of experience restoring and repairing violins, violas and cellos Below: He firmly believes in the importance of finding the right bow, and allows his customers to trial a selection of them at home Pictures by John Ferguson

Russell Stowe qualified from the prestigious Newark School of Violin Making, and has been repairing and selling instruments at his acclaimed shop, Woodbridge Violins, since 1991 What can you tell us about the job? As well as restoring the instruments and bows, I increasingly find myself spending time on the computer, emailing and answering enquiries. I often contact customers that way to find out their requirements for violins, violas, cellos and bows. Our business is run on trust and over the years I’ve built up good relationships with many players who regularly visit and bring their instruments for tweaks, repairs or upgrades. And we work closely with string teachers to make sure their

pupils choose an instrument fitting for them in quality and budget. What have been the highlights? For a start, being based on Market Hill. It’s a really lovely location that overlooks life in our beautiful town. Another is working with my great team, Jonathan and Katherine – colleagues who are now friends. Both have worked here for more than 10 years now. I also feel very privileged to regularly work on beautiful instruments and bows. Do you play the violin yourself? Yes, I got my first one aged 11. It was Czechoslovakian and I think it cost my parents about £40. Any plans for the business? I have no ambitions to change much about the shop; it’s already everything I wanted it to be. So the plan is to continue selling and restoring instruments to players all over the country, and to keep working closely with musicians. We recently spent time improving our website to bring us more in line with the modern world. In the 26 years you have lived here, what has been the most significant change to the town? The type of shops now starting to appear – far more boutiques and coffee shops and fewer antique shops. It’s great to see so many

independent retailers, and many visitors to the town comment on it. I think Woodbridge has gone more upmarket in the past 20 years. Property prices obviously reflect that. If you could have one wish granted for the town, what would it be? That every one of the shops has its own car park!

“I have a brick dedicated to me on Market Hill!” What makes Woodbridge special? Personally, to have my great friend Ugur running The Galley restaurant 200 yards away from my shop! Aside from that, it has a unique location next to a fantastic river and an intimate, friendly atmosphere. You can’t walk into town without bumping into several people you know – at least! What is your defining moment? Professionally it would be feeling so proud to have such a great shop in a wonderful town. Tell us a secret about yourself. I have a brick dedicated to me on Market Hill! l You’ll find Woodbridge Violins at 26 Market Hill. Call 01394 383150 or see www.woodbridgeviolins.com ISSUE ONE… SUMMER 2016

Since launching IP Twelve six months ago, business is booming for Jamie Curran. We caught up with him to find out what he’s been up to

J

amie Curran’s increasingly popular IP Twelve agency has created quite a stir in the local property lettings market. In just six short months he has become one of the leading go-to agents for lettings. “The Rightmove statistics for the period 1st January to 1st April confirm the company as being second place out of 31 companies in the IP12 and IP13 post code areas, for new instructions,” smiles Jamie. “We’re also number two for the number of lets agreed and volume of available stock. “I had to do a double take at the reports as in my wildest dreams I wasn’t expecting to be knocking on the top spot so quickly. The company that pipped me to first place has been in the business for over 25 years, so I’m pretty chuffed.” With faultless feedback from clients – both landlords and tenants - Jamie is riding the crest of the wave. “I think I’ve struck a chord with people because the service I’m offering is transparent, honest and without the expected sales hype that simply doesn’t deliver. “People tell me they like the name – IP Twelve. They say that it gives them confidence that I know the market here, not just the generic lettings market, but here in Woodbridge.” Whilst most of Jamie’s business comes from IP12, already he has clients in Felixstowe, Ipswich and Wickham Market on his books. “A beautiful house to let in Wickham Market came on the market on a Friday and it was let by Monday,” he says. Offering both tenant find and full management services, it’s the management of multi properties on behalf of landlords that has exceeded Jamie’s expectations. “Previous clients with numerous rental properties have decided to join me at IP Twelve, which is a huge compliment to the service I’m offering.”

The support Jamie has received since setting up from other businesses across Woodbridge, including estate agents, has been a pleasant surprise. “There’s a real team spirt in town, which is great. It’s a bit like a collective with everyone pulling together.” With properties on his books from the bijou and quaint, to the grand with river views, the service Jamie offers remains the same. “Whatever size of property, I only give honest feedback on the rental yields which I believe are achievable and my marketing is the same whatever the rental potential. I set up IP Twelve with a clear vision of the values I wanted to run my business by; these won’t change regardless of how many properties I represent.” Based at Deben Mill, there’s no plans just yet to move further into Woodbridge. “Deben Mill is a great spot and close enough to town for people to visit the office. Ultimately my website is my shop window, and this is working fantastically well.” The risks and bureaucracy involved in setting up your own business are enough to deter many from taking the plunge nowadays. But not Jamie. “I just love being my own boss. I wake up earlier than ever before, I’m speaking

f you hanker for a day by the water, but going to the coast feels like a trip too far, why not head to Waldringfield? Only five miles from central Woodbridge, there’s a pub with views to die for, a beach (if you get the tides right), riverboat rides and crabbing nets, as well as a permanent ice cream van in the summer holidays. It’s even got its own sailing club, which is always keen to welcome new members, whether they are experienced sailors or beginners. There’s also a ‘learn to sail’ summer programme for children. Mark and Emma Barton took over Waldringfield Boatyard in November 2012 and have never looked back. Commuting daily from his Woodbridge home, Mark says: “Where else can you work

outside doing a job you love, and then at the end of the day walk just 20 paces to enjoy a cold beer, looking out at one of the best views in East Anglia?” From the boatyard, you can also take a two-hour trip aboard Jahan, a 38ft boat licenced to carry up to 54 passengers, to take in the river and its beautiful surroundings. Alternatively, you can hop on board Oystercatcher, an open launch that seats 12 people, for a half-hour exploring the Deben. “Waldringfield is a little like time stood still,” adds Mark. “With its beach huts, river walks and kids happily crabbing and messing about in the river on a sunny day, it’s hard to beat. “You can even buy lovely fresh eggs and garden produce from the roadside as you’re heading home.”

Woodbridge’s Clarissa Vincent sailed alone from the UK to West Africa – a journey that would set her life on a different course … Pictures by John Ferguson Is grey just so last year?… Jojo Humes Brown on colours

e’re having a cuppa at the Pavilion Cafe on Kingston Playing Field, deep in conversation. It may be warm and snugly inside but the goosebumps are forming as Clarissa Vincent tells tales of her single-handed attempt to sail from England to Spain. It was a trip which would unexpectedly see her sail on to Senegal in her cheaply bought yet beloved 1960s-built boat, Storm Petrel. And for Clarissa it was the start of a journey that would see her embrace a new identity – one with which she could live on her own terms. It’s hard to imagine what it‘s like to sail away from the safety of dry land without a phone signal for emergencies, surviving on little more than your wits, tinned rations, and torturously-timed 15-minute sleeps so as not to crash the 27ft vessel into a passing ship. “To be honest, I always thought I was going to bucket out,” smiles Clarissa, who you may recognise from busking with her saxophone and dog, Hamish, around town. “But at a certain period, when I was far enough out to sea, maybe three days in, I realised: All I’ve got to do now is carry on doing this. “The thought of arriving in Spain

was such a huge draw, I didn’t really care about what would happen after that.” Having to stay at a heightened level of alertness must have been hard enough, but what about coping with the isolation? “I really enjoy doing things on my own – you don’t have to worry about anyone else,” she smiles. “I’d read enough books about lone voyages to understand what to expect. I really wanted to see for myself what it was all about.” And it was all about survival. “Even throwing a banana skin overboard after eating it was a very hard thing to do, both mentally and physically,” she says. “It was that act of letting something go out of the boat, when instinct was telling me to protect and preserve everything in it. I was that self-contained.” Seven days after she set off from her then-home in Bristol, Clarissa arrived in Spain, emerging from her boat a new member of an exclusive elite of fearless lone voyagers. “I couldn’t believe I’d actually done it!” smiles Clarissa, who has since penned two autobiographical books, self-published under her

artist label, Girl in a Gale, which also chart her incredible journey on to Senegal and The Gambia. “I started to feel this new sense of self-esteem, like: Anything could happen now.” Clarissa insists she’ll never make that journey again, though admits sometimes, when she looks out of her riverboat across the River Deben, a familiar feeling of excitement washes over her for just a second, wondering what it would be like to set sail again …

aking the reins of a popular 90-bedroom hotel from your parents is no easy feat. But Tarnia Robertson, the MD of Ufford Park Hotel, did just that two years ago, and has never looked back. “Dad had retired from running his successful building company, Aldous Homes, and was often at the golf course here. When the unfinished hotel building came on the market, it seemed like a perfect second career opportunity for him and Mum. But never did I think that one day I would be heading up the business.” Tarnia’s father, Colin Aldous, purchased the hotel in Melton back in 1991, and since taking over its full-time management, Tarnia has been steadily making her mark and expanding Ufford Park’s appeal.

“We’ve worked very hard to gain a reputation as a great independent family hotel”

Work on the restaurant was recently completed, and its contemporary look and feel has already made a huge difference to business. Now we’re definitely considered a wonderful choice for non-residents looking for a Sunday roast or a special meal out.” In fact, business is booming – and Tarnia is delighted. “These days, the Suffolk coast is a place to visit in its own right,

Woodbridge is winning accolades as the best place to live in East Anglia, and social media enables incredible levels of customer engagement. “Since severing links with the Best Western brand several years ago, we’ve worked very hard to gain a reputation as a great independent family hotel. That is borne out by the fantastic feedback we receive, both directly and on TripAdvisor.” And what about the future? “This year is all about continuing with our refurbishment efforts and celebrating our 25th anniversary. “Next year we’ll be going for our VisitEngland silver award and then we’ve got our eyes set on gold. With several boutique hotels in the area, we’re more than happy to retain our three-star hotel position, and that all-important family appeal. But our aim is to be the best three-star hotel in East Anglia and always exceed customers’ expectations.” With more than 150 staff working at peak periods, teamwork is crucial to Ufford Park’s ongoing success. “It’s not an ‘us and them’ culture here, we all pull together,” she says. “Ninety-five per cent of our feedback praises the customer service guests have received while staying with us, which makes me very proud.” While Tarnia’s parents are no longer involved, Ufford Park is still a family affair. Her husband, Stuart, has worked on the golf side of the business since 1992 and now runs Doctorgolf, the hotel’s golf academy. Their eldest son Joshua, 21, is also part of the team. Joshua’s brother, Oliver, is studying dance in Leeds and their sister, Georgia, is still at school. “We’re a local family and business. I’m planning to be here for the next 10–15 years,” smiles Tarnia. “Right now, it’s about celebrating 25 years of the hotel. But who knows what the future will bring?” l Call Ufford Park on 01394 383555 or visit www.uffordpark.co.uk ISSUE ONE… SUMMER 2016

W

aterfowl like wigeon and teal are on their way back to The Northern Forests and the Arctic Tundra to breed, while our summer visitors are arriving, most of which will be travelling all the way from Africa. It’s an epic journey for even the most hardy of travellers, so for a small bird weighing just a few ounces, surviving it borders on the miraculous. Unfortunately many of the birds perish en route, either through natural causes such as predation, or illegal trapping and hunting which is rife on some of the Mediterranean islands, such as Malta and Cyprus. As a result lots of our spring migrants are in serious decline – some species by up to a third or more. The turtle dove population has plummeted a worrying 95 per cent since the 1990s. This inspired my friend Jonny Rankin and a small group to set up the operation, Dove Step. Their latest adventure saw them walking more than 700 miles across the length of Spain to raise money and awareness of the plight of this beautiful farmland bird. Here in Woodbridge we’re still blessed

to have the turtle dove as a summer visitor. Listen out for their ‘turring’ call from which they get their name. Walking around Kyson Point over the coming weeks, you could also be rewarded with the glorious song of the nightingale. You’ll know one when you hear it – very loud and with a distinctive rattle. There’s also the cuckoo – another unmistakable sound of spring and again in sad decline; 65 per cent since the 80s.

“Walking around Kyson Point, you could be rewarded with the glorious song of the nightingale” So as we march on into summer, keep your eyes and ears open as you enjoy those riverside walks and you could be in for a treat. Winter was kind to us in Woodbridge, as we were lucky to have a lovely flock of waxwings visit us, which flew all the way from Siberia to spend a few days in the trees and gardens of Old Barrack Road in town.”

Jonny Rankin and a small team recently completed a 700-mile walk across Spain in aid of turtle doves. To find out more, head to www.operationturtledove.org

M

ost of us now have smartphones which we carry wherever we go. We have become increasingly reliant on them. The average person checks their phone 85 times a day, and young adults typically use theirs for five hours in every 24. Even if you only use it for 90 minutes a day, that adds up to more than three weeks a year! As a result, those of us in clinical practice are seeing younger and younger patients with painful neck and upper back problems. Known as ‘text neck’, the issue even affects school-age children. The neck is a stack of bones balanced on top of one another, connected by discs and supported by muscles. Your spinal cord runs inside it, as do the nerves to your arms, which come out through small gaps between the bones. Your head sits on top of this stack like a melon balanced on a Lego tower. It weighs around 10lb and relies on your muscles to hold it up. Spending hours with your head flexed forwards, looking at a screen, puts enormous strain on these muscles. In fact, bending

your neck forward can put up to six times the amount of stress on your spine than if your neck is upright. For comparison, hold a shopping bag close to your chest and then hold it out at arm’s length. When your spinal muscles are repetitively or continuously overloaded they can’t properly perform their role in supporting the head, neck or torso. In turn, this can result in: l Pain in the neck or upper back, from a dull ache to severe spasms l Headaches l Shoulder pain l Numbness or tingling in the arm if a nerve becomes compressed How do we deal with it? Well, prevention is the key. Always try to keep your screen as close to eye level as possible. Not just your phone, but laptops, iPads and Fitbits too. Take frequent breaks and limit time at a screen to no more than 30-minute chunks if possible, walking around in between. Try to use voice recognition too. But sometimes the preventative stage has passed – what then? Thankfully the treatment is usually

straightforward. Physiotherapy or osteopathy is usually all that is required to loosen off tight muscle, strengthen weak muscle, and work on your posture. That eases pain and helps prevent recurrence.

“Bending your neck forward can put up to six times the amount of stress on your spine” While I have not yet encountered a case of the condition that needed something as drastic as surgery, there is growing evidence that it can lead to earlier degeneration of the neck. This is of particular concern in the growing spines of children and adolescents, and may become a problem that needs more invasive treatment at a later stage. Although it might seem terribly alarming, text neck can be avoided and, even if it becomes an issue, it can be treated in a simple and straightforward way. You only have one spine. Look after it – before I have to!”

‘THE KING’S RIVER’ RETOLD

This eagerly anticipated production is the talk of the town. Co-producer, Sam Simpson, explains more

T

he new Whisstocks development will be taking centre stage this summer with its official opening and the debut of the dazzling theatrical performance of ‘The King’s River’. Co-producer of the project, Sam Simpson, says: “Not only does ‘The King’s River’ celebrate the story of Woodbridge and those who discovered the Sutton Hoo treasure, but it’s a fantastic example of bringing together all parts of the community, young and old; all who share a passion for where we live. “We’re delighted that nine local schools are involved as the children play key roles such as the elements, fire, water, air and earth, with the younger children playing treasure, swords and shields. The artistic team includes so many extraordinarily talented local people, from our librettists, composer, musical director, costume

designers, choreographer, the list goes on. And everyone has been so generous with their skills and time.”

“This is such a special project and we hope will be remembered in the town’s history for a long time to come” Over 100 performers, mainly school pupils take to the stage in Part One, set in Whisstocks’ new open space area and which tells the story of the burial of King Raedwald, the first Christian king of East Anglia. For Part Two the audience relocates to the Riverside Theatre where they’ll take up the story set in the 1930s

in Mrs Pretty’s house, which stands adjacent to Sutton Hoo. It takes us back to this local lady’s interest in spiritualism and her dream which led to her having the burial mounds in her grounds excavated and the subsequent world-famous discovery of the treasure. With four evening performances (11th – 14th July) at 6.30pm and a matinee on Saturday 15th July Sam urges everyone to buy their tickets as quickly as possible. “We’ve got a capacity of 250 per show and already tickets are selling fast,” she adds. l For full details and tickets, simply visit www.thekingsriver.co.uk

THE HEART OF BUTLEY Pub lovers are flocking to Butley’s refurbished Oyster Inn which has been lovingly restored by its new owners Judi and Andrew Newman. The historic pub, which was starting to become derelict after closing down four years ago, has been transformed into a vibrant, welcoming pub serving traditional home-cooked food. “The pub had been closed since the end of 2012,” says Judi, from Melton. “It had clearly sucked the life out of the community and we felt it was such a wasted asset, just sitting there empty.” With Judi’s successful background in charity and Andrew’s in green energy they pooled their wealth of experience and decided to reopen the 18th century pub with its legendary link to folk music – a tradition they plan to revive. The couple’s builders’ Stowe Building Contractors Ltd are now

busy converting the barns into a microbrewery, a holiday let, a games/ cinema room and a village shop – work is due to be completed this July. “They’ve done a great job,” says Judi. “We really care about rural communities and ultimately people need jobs.” The couple are delighted that the pub is now in expert hands, being run by experienced landlords Rob and Tracy Butcher who are serving up some delicious pub favourites. “They were trained by Greene King and used to run Isaacs in Ipswich, which was very successful,” says Judi. “Rob’s got lots of ideas at the moment for the microbrewery – he’s still trying out recipes and has lots of plans! The four of us have become a little team. We’ve been on a real journey together.” l Go to www.butleyoyster.com

HONEY + HARVEY EXPANDS! Honey + Harvey is opening up a second site at Riduna Park in Melton in a couple of months, with a third spot in Suffolk in the pipeline! Owner Harvey Allen, who established the artisan coffee shop in October 2011, The new site in Melton says: “The success of our business is not by chance, but down to the relentless enthusiasm of our staff and the hard work of the local producers that supply us.” The Woodbridge branch is now open on Friday and Saturday evenings, serving a range of cocktails, wine and beer, as well as a selection of small tapas style plates. Friday nights are ‘party nights’, while Saturdays are a more chilled affair. l Go to www.honeyandharvey.co.uk

TEA HUT HAPPENINGS With everyone now out and about, things are busier than ever at The Tea Hut. Owner, Sharon Wolff explains: “There’s lots of really exciting things happening at the moment, including being nominated as a finalist in this year’s Suffolk Food & Drink awards. So, a very big well done to the team.” “We’ll also be grooving throughout the summer months with some great music evenings planned, including Tallulah Goodtimes on 27th May playing

vintage sounds of yesteryear and beats and bass from today with her Goodtimes electro-swing,” adds Sharon. “And we have the return of our Psychedelic Shack Nights, our next is on 10th June and guaranteed to have everyone grooving on the dance floor.” The Tea Hut also hopes to host some food nights this summer which would include a themed three course meal. l For more information on their action-packed summer of events go to www.theteahut.co.uk

SpringFest 26th-29th may various venues in woodbridge It is the festival to kick off the season and here at Living In … Woodbridge we’re very excited to be the proud sponsors of this year’s action-packed SpringFest. According to acclaimed DJ Marco Spina, the event’s all about bringing together the people of Woodbridge and beyond to enjoy great music. Marco and partner Ian Matthews are the driving force behind it – the town’s very own music festival. With more than 55 acts playing in four venues across Woodbridge, there’s something for everyone. Keen to showcase emerging and accomplished talent from Suffolk and further afield, SpringFest helps create a platform for new acts, as well as more seasoned musicians. Marco says: “Some bands you won’t have even heard of before,

but rest assured they’ve all passed SpringFest’s strict quality control!” Headlining on Friday, 26th May is Reno & Rome, who are playing at The Kings Head on Market Hill. “We discovered them at Ipswich Music in the Park last year, and we immediately asked them to play at SummerFest 2016,” says Ian. “Their high-energy sound, subtly inspired by 80s pop, blew us away!” Friday Fox Recording are DJs and producers who Marco and Ian first met at SpringFest 2016. “Since then they have released commercial dance tracks under the name Christian B & Lavvy Levan, and worked with chart-topping producer Stonebridge,” says Marco. “We were their first Silent Disco and they’re coming back for more this year. You can check them out on Saturday, 27th at The Angel on Theatre Street.” Ian explains more: “Our decision to host gigs in local venues is an important element of SpringFest. The footfall it brings to businesses

around town gives them a boost and they’re so supportive of what we’re doing. This year, The Crown and The Kings Head are joining us, alongside The Table and The Angel.”

“SpringFest helps create a platform for new acts” Both passionate believers that music can help and engage with people, Marco and Ian are looking for groups to join forces with. “We really want to team up with a charity or group which is all about helping people through the power of music, and that can play a part in our future events,” says Ian. “If they’re based in East Anglia so much the better. If you know of any, we’d love to hear from you.” Check out the full line-up by going to www.spring-fest.co.uk. For latest updates, see www.facebook.com/ springfestsuffolk. SUFFOLK’S HIDDEN GEMS Suffolk Hideaways is an ambitious new holiday lettings agency which recently opened its doors for business on Aldeburgh High Street. At the time of its launch, it had a portfolio of 25 marketed properties, ranging from houses on the exclusive Sibton Park Estate in Heveningham to thatched gems sitting among the lush green hills of Constable country. An award-winning team at Donalds Garage

TOP OF THE CLASS Donald’s Garage in Ipswich has been recently named as one of Volvo’s top performers. First awarded Volvo’s Regional Dealer of the Year accolade back in 2014, it has again scooped the gong which is determined using key performance indicators from a variety of measures including new car sales, used car sales, parts and accessories sales and customer satisfaction. The award comes as Donald’s recently announced exciting plans to build a flagship Volvo outlet, in one of Ipswich’s most soughtafter retail parks. Scheduled to open early 2018, the dealership at Futura Park, Nacton, will be the region’s first state-of-the-art dealership, designed to meet the specifications of Volvo’s ‘Retail Experience’ standard. The Volvo Retail Experience concept is a showcase for the brand’s Scandinavian design philosophy and, like its cars, aims to effortlessly combine a cool and stylish exterior with a warm and welcoming interior. Daniel Le Cocq, Donald’s general manager, says: “This is a fantastic achievement for the entire team who work incredibly hard to deliver high levels of service to our customers. As an allround measurement of the business, the award underlines how important all roles are within the dealership. Everyone here works together as a team to continually meet our customers’ requirements so we’re naturally delighted to be recognised for our efforts.” Jon Wakefield, managing director, Volvo Car UK said: “It’s hugely rewarding for us to be able to acknowledge the stand-out performers within our dealer network throughout the year as part of the Dealer of the Year challenge. The winning dealerships have all demonstrated outstanding levels of service and commitment to their customers on behalf of Volvo, and I hope they take great pride in their awards.”

THE MOULD

We chat with Charles Rowett, Gotelee’s new and visionary CEO, about taking up his new position and returning to his adopted county

I

t’s been a busy few months at Gotelee Solicitors with the opening of the new Woodbridge office at Quay Point, Station Road, as reported in our last issue, and a new CEO, who joined the team at Easter. In this edition, we catch up with Charles Rowett, the new chief executive. A passionate man with a big warm smile, he very much breaks the mould of who you would expect to head up a law firm. Firstly, he’s not a lawyer. A Yorkshireman, with a serious business background, including being HR director of Hutchison West Ports in Felixstowe, and CEO of Yorkshire Cancer Research, Charles relished the opportunity to return to Suffolk, his adopted home. “We lived in and around the Woodbridge area for more than 20 years and raised our boys here. I also knew of Gotelee’s strong reputation before moving back to Yorkshire. The idea they were looking for a non-lawyer to head up the firm, to build real relationships with local people, was hugely appealing and, in my book, showed their inspiration to grow the business. “Of course a good law firm needs first-rate people with the skills to practice law, and we have that in abundance. We

need to allow them to focus on what they do best, which is serving clients. My role is to manage the broader aspects of the business and develop new opportunities.” Offering the full range of legal services from every office, Gotelee’s specialist lawyers can meet clients in the most convenient location in Ipswich, Hadleigh, Felixstowe, Woodbridge and Melton. Home and office visits can also be arranged. “We want to be as accessible as possible to clients, existing and new. You shouldn’t need to go anywhere else for your legal needs, whether for your business, yourself or your family. “It’s a lovely blend of accessibility, professionalism and quality, which is a rare combination these days.” With the new Woodbridge office now open for business, Charles says: “Woodbridge is thriving, with new businesses opening all the time, and this growth is what sets the town apart. The area needs the full legal spectrum – more than what was currently on offer to the town. “It’s a magnet for people from the City, those relocating permanently or setting up a holiday home. We’re in a unique

position to offer that full legal service locally – from property, residential and commercial, corporate, family, private client, for example Wills, tax trusts and probate and employment. If somebody is thinking of buying a business in Woodbridge or launching one, we’ve got the experts to help.” With many law firms consolidating offices and relying on call centres to interact with clients, Gotelee’s strategy is the polar opposite. “Personal relationships count with us, not big swanky offices or online call centres. Like our strapline says, we’re ‘on your side, at your side’ and by that we place ourselves at the heart of the community”. The law firm is also a keen supporter of the local community and has been heavily involved with an array of events including last year’s Shuck Festival, the Woodbridge 10k, the Woodbridge football, rugby and golf clubs, and sponsoring July’s regatta. Gotelee’s recent acquisitions of Margary & Miller – both

“We’re committed to providing local people and local businesses with straightforward, no-nonsense practical legal services, that help them deal with the pressures of modern life.” the Woodbridge and Melton offices – and Blocks in Felixstowe, prompt a question about the future. “We’ve got a year of consolidation ahead of us, as we want to make everything we’ve currently got work as efficiently as possible for the benefit of our clients,” says Charles. “In the last three years, our head count has doubled to 126 people, and we’re looking to further recruit new talent to meet our growing client demand. So we are always interested in hearing from high quality solicitors who want to develop their careers. Currently, with our acquisitions and new offices, we’re attracting new talent, which is a very positive place to be. “Future expansion is likely to be through a combination of organic growth and acquisition, with interesting opportunities along the coast or in mid-Suffolk which could, in the longer term, be very exciting.” On a final note, Charles adds: “This whole move feels like it was meant to be. We couldn’t be happier to be back in Suffolk. I’ve rejoined Woodbridge Golf Club and love a game of league squash at Martlesham Leisure. We’ve come home.”

MAYOR BY DESIGN! Talented dressmaker Clare Perkins is hoping to bring a creative theme to her new role

T

his month sees the town’s Clare Perkins embark on her new role as Mayor of Woodbridge. A talented fashion designer by trade Clare says: “I’m actually getting a bit nervous, which surprises me. I suppose I just want to fulfill the role to the best of my abilities. I’m so lucky to be Mayor in what is turning out to be a very exciting year for Woodbridge. Not only have we got the forthcoming opening of Whisstocks, we also have a wonderful musical gala, ‘The King’s River’ performed by local artists from 11th – 15th July. Woodbridge has also been voted the best place to live in the east of England and we’ve recently done very well in the Suffolk Food Awards. There’s lots going on.” After a stint living in Canada, due to her late husband’s work, Clare has lived in Suffolk for more than 30 years, raising a family and focusing on her design work. She moved to Woodbridge five years ago after meeting and falling in love with local solicitor James Lightfoot, who is chairman of the acclaimed business and tourism association, Choose Woodbridge. “It’s such a special place,” smiles Clare, now engaged to James, “In 2015 I decided I wanted to give something back and was absolutely thrilled to be elected as a Woodbridge Town councillor. Being a creative I’ve always been a free spirit and I was a little out of my comfort zone at first! But I’ve really enjoyed learning how best to serve the town.” And she says she was spurred on enormously by the help and support of her fellow town councillors. “I’m so proud and honoured to have been elected as Mayor and will do my utmost to help members of the community,” she says.

Clare originally graduated as a designer from the London College of Fashion and Clothing Technology. In 1972 she went on to work with leading British designer Sir Norman Hartnell in London, where she says she was privileged to work on many royal outfits and gain valuable haute couture experience. For many years she worked as a freelance designer from home then in 2008 started her company Silk Rose, specialising in bespoke bridal design. She also runs workshops at the popular Fiona’s Fabrics in Gobbitts Yard. “I like to help people gain confidence through sewing,” she smiles. “So many of these skills have vanished over the years and it’s so important - it’s in our nature to make and create things, whether it’s art, music, dance, pottery, spinning or more.” Her love of the arts will be a running theme in her mayoral duties for the next year as she’s planning to set up the Woodbridge Creative Arts Legacy Fund which will help people who may not have the funds to develop their art skills. “For example, someone might need an easel for painting or a loom to weave,” she says. “It will also help provide fulfilment through therapeutic creativity. This will be achieved by helpers using their diverse skills.” Clare is simply brimming with ideas for her new role and is clearly passionate about the town. “Woodbridge is so creative and arty, we need to embrace that more,” she adds.
