Welcome...

T

his issue we have our focus on Homes and Gardens. With the uncertainty that still shadows Brexit in March, many locals are choosing to stay put and do up their homes rather than risk moving. We have a wonderful range of local businesses - from Ayrton Windows to Zenkuchen highlighting what they have to offer home-owners. Read more from pg 7. Ten years ago I interviewed a young teenager, Matthew Ball, a pupil at the Royal Ballet School in Richmond Park. During what was one of my favourite days of publishing the magazines, I chatted to him about his love of ballet and then watched him, spellbound, as he trained in class. This month, a decade later, I interviewed Matthew again when he had just ended his lead role in Swan Lake at Sadler's Wells and was rehearsing for Don Quixote at the Royal Opera House. Find out how things have changed for this astounding young man on pg 26. Easter is nearly upon us and it can be difficult to keep the children active during the holidays, so catch up on where to take them and what to do on pg 41. Pippa, Editor

simple STYLE

homes & interiors

For a fuss-free and timelessly good-looking style, choose plain and simple chic

W

e all want our homes to be comfortable, practical and good-looking. Just as important as gorgeous colours and appealing accessories are necessities such as easy-to-clean surfaces, effective lighting and durable kitchenware. Which is where simple style – a combination of form and function that is completely unpretentious and always hard working – excels. It takes classic designs that have stood the test of time and combines them with the best of modern furnishings, using tactile materials and pale, neutral colours to achieve a look that is calm and quiet, comfortable and honest, and hugely pleasing to live with. Walls and floors are the starting point. Quick and inexpensive to achieve are walls in plain paint shades. Neutrals are fundamental, with a palette of soft whites ranging from chalk, ivory and bone through to deeper taupes and greys, with stronger accents providing contrast: sage green, midnight blue or earthy brown, for example. More finished surfaces, as appropriate to the room, could include grasscloth wallpaper, bevel-edge tiles or timber panelling. As for floors, the key is to combine the practicality of sturdy materials such as traditional stone flags, brick pavers or wooden floorboards with the softness of plain or minimally patterned carpets or conveniently placed, understated, elegant rugs. Furniture should be pared down in style, chosen for its strength, durability and comfort first and foremost, and always clean-lined as opposed to over-decorative. Windsor or ladder-back chairs, wooden stools, blanket boxes and traditional dressers are all just right for the simple interior, especially when made from natural wood or painted in a muted shade. Mixing eras works perfectly, too,

provided pieces are chosen for their inherent good design and plain style, transcending all fads and fashions. Rather than elaborate window treatments of any type, this style has a less-is-more feel, and where windows can be left bare, then why not? Panelled wooden shutters look elegant and discreet, while Roman blinds and gathered curtains are preferable to anything elaborate. Other soft furnishings might include the plainest of loose covers for chairs and sofas (avoid frilled valances or other flourishes) and cushions with no-nonsense fastenings and the most basic of trims. Linen, cotton and wool are ideal fabrics for this style: unassuming,

natural fibres that have been the backbone of classical decorating for centuries. Look for plain colours and stripes, adding a range of textures for interest. In addition to the soft drape of textiles, introduce a range of natural materials, such as woven willow, sisal, slate or timber, to provide an interesting atmosphere even in an apparently minimal room. To ensure a calm and airy feel overall, good storage is vital. Areas such as utility rooms, laundry rooms, boot rooms and dressing rooms are a great asset, but where space is more limited then well-designed cupboards, shelves and other storage areas are incredibly helpful in terms of clearing away the clutter and confusion of everyday life and making simple rooms feel more spacious and liveable. In kitchens, a free-standing storage piece such as a dresser, plate rack or butcher’s block breaks up the uniformity of fitted cupboards and creates a more timeless appearance. Finally, when it comes to lighting, inset spotlights throw light where needed without

drawing the eye, while classic fittings, such as glass pendants, Anglepoise table lamps or slender wall lights with ceramic shades can be added where necessary. As for finishing touches, beware an abundance of accessories, and choose essential items such as wooden peg hooks, hand-made soap, thick woollen throws and blankets, blue and white crockery, rustic bread boards and pillar candles, plus loose arrangements of gorgeous cottagegarden flowers. Key ingredients of simple style • Consider wooden panelling, tongue-andgroove boarding, textured wallpaper and classic tiles as options for your walls. • Opt for classic floorboards, stone or slate flags, brick pavers or terracotta tiles for the floor, combined with plain carpets and/or subtle rugs. • Combine soft white shades with a few deeper colours. • Choose natural materials such as wood, slate, wicker, wool and cotton. • Ensure rooms are clear of clutter by making the most of storage space. • Remember that good design applies across all eras, so combining old and new will work if furnishings are chosen carefully for both form and function. • Avoid bold patterns in favour of plains and stripes. • Fit wooden shutters, Roman blinds or softly gathered curtains at the windows, or leave them bare if you dare.

Why move - when you can improve for less With many locals now opting to stay put rather than sell in an uncertain market, Zenkuchen can transform your kitchen, so that you love the home you’re in

S

tamp duty and moving costs can often outweigh the benefits of moving house. So the answer for many is to add value to their existing home and give it a new lease of life. If you love the idea of a fresh update, Zenkuchen can help. We are a family run business in the heart of Richmond and can design and install your new kitchen, completely transforming your space for less than the charge of stamp duty and fees that it would cost to move. We have an experienced team of great builders, plasterers, electricians and plumbers to make your transformation come true. Our sister company, Zenstone, which has been installing work tops for private clients as well as other kitchen companies since 2012, is an added bonus to our team, as it means we can offer our clients half price stone, granite and Dekton work tops when you have one of our kitchens installed. Our ethos is not only great design, but also building strong working relationships with our clients. If you don’t want to do a full kitchen, we are also happy to supply and install work tops in your existing kitchen. If this is the route you wish to take, our principles are the same. We offer kitchens to suit all tastes and pockets. We have an entry level kitchen that compares in price to Howdens or chain store options and, once we install our beautiful stone work top for half price, we can make it look a million dollars without the expensive price tag to go with it. For our clients who love German engineering, we offer one of the best German cabinet companies available, with their

Inspiring, exciting and tailored garden design Chelsea award-winning garden designer, Matt Keightley, owner of Rosebank Landscaping, shares his thoughts on creating the perfect garden

A

t Rosebank we believe town gardens are some of the most exciting schemes to design, focussing on intricate detail and maximising use of space to form a stunning outdoor extension of your home. Your new garden will be a seamless transition from the interior to exterior, from you to your garden. Matt Keightley, Creative Director of Rosebank, has advocated the positive impact gardens have on both mental and physical health throughout his career: ‘I know myself how interacting with, and becoming engrossed in, a garden can relax you and provide sanctuary to reflect. We all lead such busy lives that it’s important to build in time for quiet contemplation. There is nothing I find more satisfying than nurturing and tending to plants that will ultimately make the garden look better or provide produce for us to eat.’ A report by The King’s Fund noted that gardens and gardening have “been linked to long-term reductions in overall health problems, including reduced levels of obesity and higher self-rated mental health”. Each garden design starts with a personal consultation with our design team at your location or in our design studio in Richmond Upon Thames. We will discuss your aspirations and style preferences for the space, as well as how it will develop over time and throughout the seasons. As a designer, Matt aims to inspire his clients to see their garden in a different light, to help them use it in ways they didn’t necessarily think was possible and exceed all expectations. As a design and build studio, we then work together with our customers from this point throughout the construction process to aftercare. Matt’s top tips to green up your space: • Get the family involved. I love showing my

girls how things grow. • Engage all the senses by choosing plants with different textures and fragrances, such as Pinus Mugo and Iris Sibirica Pansy Purple. • Include fragrances you equate with happy memories. Rosemary reminds me of growing up and playing in my grandparents’ garden with my brothers, so is one of my favourites. We have a wealth of experience from rooftop and residential gardens in London, to country retreats, public spaces such as RHS Wisley and award-winning Chelsea Flower Show Show Gardens. This diverse experience demonstrates our experience and expertise to deliver inspiring gardens, expertly crafted. Extending the life of your home

business profile

Make sure you use the right company when extending your home

E

xtending your home is a big investment in time and money, so you want to make sure the company you use is experienced. Dali Pro Services (DPS) has been transforming homes into bigger, beautiful spaces for more than 18 years. Says DPS owner, Dalibor Darak: ‘We belong to the Federation of Master Builders and the Guild of Master Craftsmen, so you know that every job is the result of excellent workmanship. We always provide a high standard in design, management and construction to ensure our customer’s happiness.' House extensions Adding ground floor space not only opens up your kitchen and living space, it can add value to your property, too. Depending on the size of your conversion, you will need to apply for a Building Notice or Full Plan Application. If you don’t know a fully qualified architect, DPS has their own architect and structural engineer, who are experienced in dealing with the local authorities. A typical extension takes eight to 10 weeks to build. Loft conversions Loft conversions are the most cost-effective way of improving your home. They only take around six to eight weeks to construct and by building upwards it means you are using usually dead space rather than sacrificing garden space. DPS offer a complete service from design to finished rooms and provide a fully itemised, fixed price quotation so you can be confident about the cost before work begins. Refurbishments If you don’t need an extension or loft conversion, but aren’t happy with the current layout of your home, DPS can help reconfigure your rooms to increase space, light and

useable areas. Or, if you just need your bathroom, kitchen or bedroom refitted, they can help with this, too. New builds DPS’s team are experienced in building everything from a one-bedroom flat through to a seven bedroom family home, multi-storey office or apartment block. They can build you the home of your dreams, with every last detail planned. The team’s knowledge, built up from years of experience, means they can offer you a wide range of building methods, techniques and materials. They can work with you from your first ideas through to design development, statutory planning and building regulation processes to the completed project. DPS Ltd dpsco.co.uk / 0800 0432 333

bulb aftercare

gardening

Look after your bulbs this year and they'll keep coming back, season after season

A

t the moment, gardens will be springing back to life with carpets of snowdrops, daffodils and crocuses. Without doubt this is a wonderful sight! I do believe that the success of this springtime display really does depend on how you treat the bulbs and corms during after flowering and dormant period, while they rest unseen in the soil.

© Valerie McBride-Munro 2019

Snowdrops If you are getting fewer flowers than last year, then it’s time to think about thinning out the over-crowded clumps. Unlike most other bulbs, snowdrops can be lifted when they are still in full leaf. When replanting, remember the snowdrop needs to be given some shade during the hot summer months. Also, it’s a good idea to mark where you’ve planted clumps, so that you minimize the danger of digging them up when you’re adding other plants into what looks like a ’space’ in the border. Daffodils It’s extremely important not to cut off daffodil leaves before they have time to die off naturally. This is Nature’s way of replenishing the store cupboard for the following year’s floral performance. You may see some gardeners valiantly tying leaves into neat bundles but this is also a dreadful thing to do as it cuts off their vital supply of food, and you may as well have used

the scissors in the first place! If you missed the autumn planting boat, worry not. Go to your favourite garden centre, buy up some miniature daffodils in pots (such as Tête à Tête) and then plant - pot and all into the garden or terrace pot. Crocuses Crocus corms dislike being in soggy soils, but they do respond well to being planted in warm sunny sites, in open gritty soils. They do well naturalized in lawns, but as leaves need to die back naturally to assist in the development of new corms, this might cause an issue when you start to cut the grass. Why not pop into Kew Gardens to witness the biggest display of crocuses in the country. In 1988, Reader’s Digest donated 1.5 million corms to Kew, in celebration of the the Digest’s 50th anniversary. Because sparrows have a well-known fondness to ripping gold crocuses to shreds, Kew’s carpet only uses mauve, purple and white. Food and water All bulbs need adequate water while in growth, and also for the six weeks after flowering. In late February, apply a high potassium fertilizer to encourage bulbs to flower well in the following season. In containers, use a liquid tomato fertiliser from early spring until six weeks after flowering. Valerie McBride-Munro is a qualified horticulturist offering a plant problem solving service. From pupil to principal Ten years ago I interviewed 14-year-old Matthew Ball, a pupil at the Royal Ballet School in Richmond Park. When I interview him again, Matthew is a principal dancer at the Royal Ballet, garnering rave reviews for his performances, writes Editor, Pippa Duncan

W

hen I went to the Royal Ballet School to interview Matthew Ball a decade ago, he was a gangly, tracksuited youth, all arms and legs hanging off the sofa, chatting to me about leaving home in Liverpool aged 11, to pursue his dancing dream. He spoke of how he had been inspired by Baryshnikov and Nureyev: ‘I want to make it to the top and become principal dancer, dancing the main roles in Swan Lake and Giselle,’ he said. We moved to the studio for his class, and I watched, jaw dropping, as he transformed into a ballet dancer – elegant, poised, those gangly arms and legs fluid in motion. Now, having just turned 25, he has already been promoted to principal dancer, already had the leads in both Swan Lake and Giselle¸ with more great roles ahead of him. Last month I watched him in the main role of The Swan/The Stranger in Matthew Bourne’s all male Swan Lake at Sadler’s Wells. He was totally mesmerising. When he was on stage you could only watch him. Powerful and beautiful as The Swan, all malevolent sexiness as The Stranger (and yes, actually, a slightly uncomfortable response when you’ve interviewed him as a teenager!). It’s been ten years of hard work to get to this

26

point, as I find out when I interview him again, as he rehearses for his next big role of Basilio in Don Quixote at the Royal Opera House. ‘In a dancer’s career, the best thing you can do is make sure you seize the opportunities you get, because a lot of it is in the hands of other people. I think I’ve been lucky in terms of the timing, the shift in the company, [which is] giving younger people opportunities to do these big roles.’ It is not a given that, having been to the school, you get a place at the Royal Ballet and there’s even less chance of being promoted to principal, the highest position. But Ball was always determined to stand out: ‘There’s a lot of talented dancers out there, but not necessarily all of them can tell a story. They can execute exciting technical movements, but not be exciting facially or with charisma, so that’s something I’ve always tried to kind of work on, to add to my performances.’ It’s certainly worked. His audiences are spell-bound and critics love him. His love of ballet started at a young age. His mother took him to an early production of Bourne’s Swan Lake. ‘It really touched me back then, particularly as the male dancers are obviously the main core of the dance rather than the female characters – that role of the black and white swan, I always wanted to do. I think it’s maybe a bit more special to be doing it as it feels like I’ve come full circle.’ Along with Billy Elliot, he feels these productions have really defined dance for a whole generation of boys. When we talk, he’s in rehearsals for Don Quixote, playing the role of Basilio. He’s relishing a completely different role: ‘It’s famous for real virtuoso show-off moments, with all the big jumps, so it’s going to be a challenge in terms of getting all that technique together to execute it, but also giving it the acting side of the cheeky Spaniard, which is good fun to play around with.’

I ask him if it’s hard to come down after a performance, to just go out for a drink afterwards or flop in front of the TV? ‘So, I’ve danced sometimes where you feel like you’re still on Cloud Nine and the adrenalin is still really up - then you tend to go out for a few drinks. But there are times when I’m not just physically, but emotionally exhausted; then it’s very hard to kind of return to normality. You really do get transported while you’re on stage. Swan Lake is like that, because of the climactic moment at the end, it’s really like a fight for your's and the prince’s life. At the beginning of the season, I danced the role of Crown Prince Rudolf in Mayerling… you almost suicide pact, you love her and kill her and yourself, so you have to go to such a bad place to express that to an audience. It leaves

you, I wouldn’t say damaged, but it definitely takes a while for you to feel like yourself again.’ He’s occasionally gone back to the school in Richmond Park: ‘I still get butterflies in the stomach! The success I’ve managed to have since being there is way beyond my expectations.’ We agree to a third interview in another 10 years’ time. ‘I wonder where I’ll be?’ he quietly ponders. I have no doubt he’ll be at the top. And I can’t wait. Don Quixote - until 4 April. Booking: roh.org.uk Matthew Ball peforms the lead role of Basilio on 22 March & 1 April.

A high street success While there is worry about the future of our high streets, it is shops like Yellow Print which are bucking the trend and proving that locals not only want to walk into a business where they see a friendly face and get a personal service – but make them feel part of their local community, too

W

ill van Aswegen (right), the charming East Sheen branch manager, knows that it is the personal touch as well as the quick turnaround service that keeps customers coming back: ‘If you’ve got a complex project that needs designing and printing to your specifications and you want to talk through the options, or you need a sameday service, you don’t want to order online. People are often surprised at the number of services we offer, right here on their own high street.’ Weddings, Christenings & Funerals Save the Date, Wedding Invitations, Order of Service, Thank You cards – Yellow Print can help you create your design and choose the right paper (there’s over 50 options of colour, paper weight and texture). Need a wedding table plan for the big day? Yellow Print can create a board with a design of the seating arrangements, so everyone knows where to sit. Digital Wallpaper Create a woodland forest in your child’s bedroom (see right), or sleep in your very own library. Yellow Print can create digital wallpaper mural, made from durable, flexible material, that will transform a room. Using selfadhesive or applied using normal commercial wallpaper paste, Yellow Print can install it for you.

Photographs Don’t keep your photos on your phone, the shop has two Kodak Picture kiosks, meaning you can print out your favourite photos – even from the comfort of your own home, so they’re ready to pick up when you are. Just download the Kodak app and you could be framing your beautiful photos the same day. And don’t forget, we can take your passport photos, too. Frosted Windows Need a little more privacy in your lounge or bathroom? Choose from a selection of frosts and prints. Part of the community Yellow Print is very much part of the local community – supporting local schools at their fund-raising events by sponsoring their banners. They also support Sit Stop – allowing elderly locals to sit and rest in their shop for as long as needed. They offer charity and school discounts – and often help them out with last minute orders. yellowprint.co.uk 369 Upper Richmond Road West SW14 7NX Call Will on 020 8875 0332

restaurant review

Gazette Caroline Clark finds a warm welcome awaits her in Putney at this relaxed French brasserie…

T

he staff welcomed us into the warmly lit, cosy restaurant which has wines and books displayed, along with nostalgic French memorabilia - and even an accordion! On a cold Monday night it took us back to warm French evenings. There were several other tables which were already full, so a good buzz and a bar to sit at if you just fancied an aperitif. My friend, Jo, who has lived north of Nice, was well versed in this cuisine and happy to join me. Gazette offers a varied menu of classic French dishes, from les escargots to moules-frites and tarte tomate as well as offering ‘savoury and sweet brunch’ breakfasts with a French twist. While choosing, the guests at the next table had a steak tartare prepared and spiced at their table - a nice touch and a bit of theatre for this classic French dish. A Monday special was Chateaubriand with frites and salad for £14.50, excellent value. Whilst very appealing, Jo settled for the smaller Bavette steak, frites and green beans. This arrived on a rustic wooden platter and had great flavour. As Alsace was the featured region I chose choucroute à l’Alsacienne – a hearty plate of rustic pork shank, Alsatian roasted pork belly, frankfort and new potatoes on a bed of sauerkraut – delicious comfort food. Earthy red wines Colombaud from Provence and Cotes du Rhone - matched perfectly. A nice touch is you can write your own personal

'Gazette offers a varied menu of classic French dishes...' message on the tables in chalk – a fun idea for kids and grown-ups! No French dinner is complete without chocolate, so Jo made a beeline for pot au chocolat with freshly made madeleines – the chocolate texture and taste was perfect. Instead of my usual weakness for an espresso martini, I chose Café Liégeois coffee ice cream, expresso and cream – very indulgent and generous. It was a perfect end to Monday. Nice for its simplicity, not far from East Putney station or a stroll up the High St from the River Thames, the restaurant is ideal for brunch or lunch if you’re thinking of watching the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race on 7 April. What causes SNORING ?

health

It’s National Stop Snoring Week 22-28 April. Snoring can affect your sleep, mental health, physical health and relationships, and may also indicate sleep apnoea. So, what causes it – and is it treatable, asks Alison Runham What causes snoring? Snoring occurs when parts of your oral or nasal airways vibrate as you breathe due to a restriction, which may be permanent or only occur when your muscles relax during sleep. Factors that can contribute to snoring include: • being overweight • smoking • drinking too much alcohol • sleeping on your back • taking sedatives or muscle relaxants • being middle-aged or older, as your muscle tone decreases Tackling snoring Try lifestyle changes and ensure you sleep on your side (a tennis ball taped to the back of your nightwear or a bed wedge can help). Struggle to sleep on your side? Elevate your torso with a bed wedge. If this doesn’t help, you need to identify the cause of your snoring by using The British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association’s questionnaires at britishsnoring.co.uk/itests to find suitable treatment. Problem: Your tongue partially blocks your throat. Solution: A mandibular advancement device, which helps to bring your tongue forward. Problem: Your mouth falls open when you’re asleep. Solutions: A chin strap, or a vestibular shield (worn in your mouth to make you breathe through your nose). Problem: Blocked or narrow nasal airways. Solutions: Nasal dilators or strips that hold your nose open, or sprays to reduce nasal swelling.

If these solutions don’t work, see your GP. They may refer you to an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist. Surgery is sometimes suggested, but it’s not widely available on the NHS and isn’t always successful, particularly long-term. Could you have sleep apnoea? Symptoms include: • loud snoring or breathing, especially when lying on your back, with your mouth open • short periods when you stop breathing, gasp or snort Risk factors include those for snoring, but also include: • a large neck (17+ inches for men, 15+ for women) • a narrowed or obstructed airway • nasal congestion • family history of OSA (see below)

OSA (obstructive sleep apnoea) occurs when the muscles and soft tissues in the throat relax and collapse. Apnoea: total blockage of the airway for 10 seconds or more. Hypopnoea: partial blockage that causes an airflow reduction of over 50% for 10 seconds or more. OSA sufferers may have repeated episodes of apnoea and/or hypopnoea throughout the night.

of brain function. OSA treatments include lifestyle changes, a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device that delivers compressed air through a mask, preventing your airway closing or a mandibular advancement device or surgery, if your OSA is caused by a physical problem that can be surgically corrected. The British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association: britishsnoring.co.uk

CSA (central sleep apnoea) is much rarer, occurring mainly in older people, opioid users and heart failure or stroke sufferers. The brain temporarily ‘forgets’ to tell your body to breathe. Don’t ignore symptoms as sleep apnoea increases risk of high blood pressure (hypertension), stroke, heart attack, heart disease and arrhythmia, type 2 diabetes (although possibly linked to the obesity risk factor) and gradual loss

Getting your joints back in shape Are you considering joint replacement surgery? Read how we can help you prepare and recover

W

inter is a popular time to have a hip or knee replacement – in the hope of being fit in time for summer. Many of our clients end up having both knees or hips replaced and it’s noticeable how much quicker they recover after the second because they know what to expect and are already familiar with the exercises. So, we urge anyone considering the operation to book a physio appointment about four months beforehand for some ‘prehab’. This ensures you’re as strong as possible and fully informed about what the surgery and rehab will entail. What are the effects of having osteoarthritis? Most clients awaiting surgery have had osteoarthritis for some years. It causes: • muscles to become weak • loss of joint movement, because of stiffness • ligaments and muscles to tighten up • a limp and usually limits walking distance, requiring use of a stick • everyday activities such as getting up from a chair or doing stairs to become harder • activity levels to become limited, causing weight gain How can physiotherapy prehab help? A comprehensive assessment of your range of movement, muscle strength, walking gait, posture and ability to do everyday activities allows us to tailor a programme of exercises that will help to: • build muscle strength • where possible restore some movement • improve your walking pattern and practise using crutches in advance of your surgery • practise everyday activities • understand the benefits of low impact exercise which, although may be painful, does not harm the joint or make it worse • understand the benefits of keeping weight under control to reduce stress on the joint

Sometime clients have been known to cancel their surgery as a result of working on their prehab, particularly if they’ve never had physiotherapy before being offered surgery. Your post-op rehab Sadly, in NHS hospitals, patients are discharged 'Clients have with little or no been known physiotherapy. It’s essential that to cancel their the muscles surgery as a result surrounding of working on the joint have their strength their prehab...' restored if you’re to get the most from your new joint. Many clients come to us a year after surgery still struggling with everyday activities due to poor muscle strength. The muscles of this region are the largest in the body. They waste quickly and need focused attention to be restored. They get you up from sitting, help you walk, go up and down hills and climb stairs. Our aim is to break all these tasks down into bite sized pieces and gradually progress the difficulty until you master the skill in question. Just call 020 8876 5690 or drop in for a chat.
