Welcome to the November/December issue of Living In Richmond, Kew & East Twickenham magazine. LIVING IN As well as celebrating Christmas in a few weeks time, I am also celebrating nine years of independently publishing this magazine. I can't believe how time has flown - on the right was my first front cover - I was very proud of it at the time! Starting out with just 2,800 copies I now publish 28,000 - definitely a reason to break out the bubbly! As usual, there's lots happening locally over the Christmas period. Make sure you don't miss out on all the great events by checking out pg 18. Before you get into the Christmas rush, do find time to see one of the many authors who are taking part in the Richmond Literature Festival in November - see who's appearing on pg 29. I interviewed local film director, Howard Webster, for this issue's A Day In The Life Of... He shot almost the whole of his movie Meet Pursuit Delange - in Kew. Read more on pg 31. Please remember to use local shops for your gifts this Christmas - they all need our support. Have a great Christmas! RICHMOND &

The tree is decorated and the cake baked, but are you ready to welcome friends and family home this Christmas? Katherine Sorrell outlines quick and easy ways to create extra space

Lounging around When you’re passing the Quality Street around in front of the Bond film, you’re going to need somewhere for everyone to relax in the living room. If the sofas and armchairs are full, bring in beanbags for the kids and pop cushions on top of coffee tables and benches to create a few extra TV-viewing spaces. A bed for the night No guest room? No problem. A sofa bed, day bed or futon – or simply a longish sofa – will do the trick. A good quality airbed is a great thing to have in the back of a cupboard, too. If your living room is acting as a temporary bedroom, clear away as much as possible so your guests have room to put down their luggage, and place a small lamp near the head of their ‘bed’ and a spare throw or blanket nearby. A box, bag or basket into which they can stow bedding during the day will also help keep things tidy.

a pad or cloth first), covered with a pretty tablecloth or flat sheet, making sure the edges aren’t too wobbly. Another way to tackle the problem is to create a separate dining table – maybe just for kids – using anything with a flat surface, from a trestle table to a coffee table, surrounded by cushions on the floor.

Dinner is served An extendable dining table is perfect for accommodating additional guests. Ideally, choose one that doesn’t require you to store an extra leaf in the loft or somewhere equally awkward. Alternatively, you could enlarge your table temporarily by topping it with an overhanging sheet of plywood (you might want to protect the table with

Any old china If you haven’t got enough crockery for all your guests, plan ahead and pick up extras at car boot sales, charity shops or vintage shops. If you pick a colour theme and mix with some plain white dinnerware, you can make a virtue of the fact that they don’t exactly match. The same goes for glasses and cutlery. If all else fails, have a stack of paper

plates to hand – no one will mind once the turkey is dished out, and at least you’ll save on washing up!

Hallway solutions Extra guests means a proliferation of coats, shoes, boots and umbrellas – which can all too easily end up in a messy pile just inside the front door. A simple stacking shoe rack will always come in handy, as will a few extra hooks mounted on

Are you sitting comfortably? If you have a shortage of dining chairs, consider investing in a few inexpensive folding chairs that you could hide out of the way when not in use. They might come in handy for picnics next summer, too. If you’re not keen on how they look, try covering them with pillowcases and adding a pretty cushion. you can stack everything neatly (clear plastic makes it easy to see everything at once). Bathroom bliss Regular de-cluttering is always a good idea in the bathroom – so have a good sort out before your guests arrive and clear plenty of space for them to store their toiletries. If you have really run out of room, look for bath and shower caddies that attach by hook or suction to the bathroom wall or door, allowing you to stock all sorts of products out of the way. As a finishing touch, provide clean towels on a separate hook or rail from your own – a clothes airer that hooks over a radiator is a great gadget for this – and some luxury soaps. Your visitors will never want to leave your home…

what's in your Christmas pudding?

gardening

Look at your Christmas pudding - at least four of its main ingredients are highly prized in ancient history, and have journeyed many thousands of miles

Š Valerie McBride-Munro 2015

Cinnamon Cinnamon is the inner bark of several trees from the genus Cinnamomum in the laurel family, native to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Malabar Coast and Burma. It was imported to Egypt as early as 2000 BC. The tree is grown for two years and then all stems are cut to ground level. These cut stems must be processed immediately after harvesting while the inner bark is still wet, allowing it to curl and be cut into those ‘quills’ that we readily recognize. Nutmeg The tropical nutmeg tree is unusual as it gives us two distinct spices from the same plant - nutmeg and mace. Nutmeg is the seed of the tree, roughly egg shaped and weighs around 5-10 g when dried. Mace is the dried lacy reddish covering or aril of the seed. The tree has to be 10 years old before any harvesting starts, and the trees reach full production after 20 years. Nutmeg is known to have been a prized and costly spice in European medieval cuisine as a flavouring, medicinal and preservative agent. In Elizabethan times nutmeg was believed to ward off the plague and as a result demand increased and its price skyrocketed. Cloves These are the unopened flower buds of a cultivated tree in the myrtle family. The earlist references to cloves are in ancient Chinese

'In Elizabethan times nutmeg was believed to ward off the plague...' literature. Courtiers and officers of state were required to have a few cloves in their mouths when addressing the Emperor to keep their breath sweet. At the height of the spice trade, sailors whiled away the hours by making model boats out of cloves. Go to Museum Number 1 in Kew Gardens to see an amazing clove model boat given to Kew in 1845 - it had been bought in the Moluccas at a cost of six shillings and eight pence. Ginger This familiar root comes from an herbaceous perennial and is one of the oldest and most important spices cultivated in Asia for more than 3,000 years. The rhizomes were easy to transport and so ginger was the first oriental spice to be widely introduced elsewhere, arriving in Europe in the first century AD. The rhizome is lifted and immediately scalded and scraped to kill it to prevent it sprouting. Even today its classic warming qualities are frequently used to calm digestive disorders. a day in the life of... a film director

Howard Webster is a local writer, director and photographer. He’s just finished directing his first feature film, shot almost entirely in Kew, called Meet Pursuit Delange: The Movie

'L

ife changes when you have two-yearold twins pulling your eyelids open at 5am, shouting, ‘daddy, wake up!’. So, a couple of years ago, after years as a writer and photographer, I knew I wanted to produce a semi-autobiographical film, based on my columns - what defines your life when your dreams haven’t come true? ‘It took a long time to get the funding together - there’s a lot of lunatics out there, people who pretend to be wealthy and say they want to back you, just to get in on the film scene. I shouldn’t have been so trusting! ‘But once we got the money, we could put the cast together and, because they loved the script, we got some great names: Jason Flemyng of Lock, Stock fame, Peter Bowles, Colin Salmon (a regular in the James Bond films and Strictly 2012 contestant, who’s now shooting with Bradley Cooper in New York), Stephanie Leonidas (Defiance) and the main character of Pursuit Delange, played by upcoming actor, Ben Starr. I thought it was going to be a bit of a dude’s movie, a male Bridget Jones, but at the screenings the women love all the good-looking men! ‘The film tells the story of a 32-year-old struggling writer who lives at Kew Cricket Club and earns a living doing odd jobs. He takes in two old school friends and somehow adopts a male Bullmastiff, called Audrey. When things go from bad to worse, the three friends find out what is really important to them.

‘We shot almost the whole film in Kew and at the cricket club, which we also used as the studio and production base. All the local shops, like Mark Westbrook’s, were great in helping us film 'The locals hadn't and Kew Gardens seen anything generously let quite like it us shoot some scenes. Every so before...' often the film breaks out into a song and dance routine and when we had the iconic British pop band of I’m Too Sexy fame, Right Said Fred and 30 extras playing the ghosts of cricketers past, dancing on Kew Green, the locals hadn’t seen anything quite like it before! ‘During shooting, my day always ended very unglamorously. When everyone had gone, I’d walk home with the day’s rushes in one hand and two bags of rubbish in the other. Once one exploded and I was on the ground, picking up banana skins and thinking, ‘Spielberg doesn’t have to do this…’’

CHRISTMAS past

local history

Many Christmas traditions date back centuries, but others may not be as old as you think

© John Moses 2015

T

he name Christmas comes from Christes Maesse. In mediaeval times, the festivities ran from Christmas Eve to Epiphany (6 January). The first record of Christmas festivities is the 14th Century romance, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which takes place in the hall of Camelot. Carols date at least from this period, as Sir Gawain, visiting another castle, joined his hosts ‘with Canticles of Christmas and Carols new’. Mince pies also date back to this time, but they then contained shredded meat (thus the name) and fruit and spices. Christmas dinner would have consisted of goose or venison, followed by plum pudding. The Tudor monarchs regularly spent the Christmas season at Richmond Palace. Charles I spent Christmas there in 1638 where a number of plays were performed for the Court. The Christmas tradition lasted until the Civil War, when the victorious Parliamentarian puritanical leaders banned all Christmas festivities including the Christmas dinner. After the Restoration, Christmas Day was once again a holiday, but more subdued. In 1660, Samuel Pepys wrote in his diary that after church he dined with his wife and brother on mutton and chicken and then again to church. In the 18th Century there was a change in attitude. George I reintroduced the custom of eating plum pudding and it was only in 1800 that Queen Charlotte introduced the German custom of the Christmas tree - though it did not become popular until decades later, when the Illustrated London News printed an engraving of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their family around their Christmas tree in 1848. Many Christmas traditions began in the Victorian era, such as the sending of cards, made possible by the introduction of cheap postage. In 1880, 11 million cards were printed and one can see from the Richmond and Twickenham Times that many Richmond shops

'Queen Charlotte introduced the German custom of the Christmas tree...' were advertising Christmas cards. Turkeys had been introduced from the New World sometime before, but the Victorians made it the popular Christmas dish. Before that, the well-to-do would have generally eaten roast beef. The Victorians also omitted meat from their mince pies. The custom of exchanging presents returned and many stores in Richmond were advertising their wares. Hammonds were offering Turkeys at 6s 6d, while Goslings were offering a 5% discount for ‘ready cash’. However, Christmas commuting has certainly changed. While these days thousands travel to get home for Christmas, in December 1900, the Richmond and Twickenham Times noted that, while at Christmas there were usually far less railway passengers than other Bank Holidays, that year was especially quiet! Have a healthier, happier Christmas

Christmas is often laden with expectations, anxieties, over-indulgence and family tensions. Alison Runham explains how you can make Christmas happier and healthier Take the pressure off

If your family is getting together over Christmas and you know there are some family conflicts, talk to those involved before Christmas day and see if you can resolve them beforehand. You can’t please all of the people all of the time, so ask everyone involved (including yourself ) which one or two things really makes their Christmas. Agree on a plan that includes these things and also encourage walks or other group activities. Allot tasks to ensure one person doesn’t do everything. Bake and freeze food in advance where possible.

Food preparation

Things can slip with extra food, extra cooks and extra time pressure, so remember to defrost food thoroughly and then cook or refrigerate immediately, ensuring your fridge stays below 5°C and there’s room for cold air circulation. Large turkeys take a long time to defrost, so always check the inside for ice crystals. If you’re serving buffet food, don’t leave it out for more than four hours. Chill leftovers rapidly and reheat them thoroughly (just once).

The lunch

No one wants to hold back when tucking into the Christmas dinner, but there are ways to avoid overdoing the calories. When serving nibbles, avoid crisps, salted nuts and chocolates, but offer carrot sticks or unsalted nuts. Poultry fat is predominantly in the skin, so when cooking the turkey, prick it then cook it on a rack, so the fat drips down. Keep portion sizes sensible - people can always go back for seconds. Forget goose fat roasties, use a healthy oil spray and microwave, steam or boil vegetables in minimal water until just soft. Add herbs or lemon juice rather than butter.

Drink wisely

Even small amounts of alcohol affect judgement and reactions. Absorption depends on many factors, so no set amount guarantees you’re under the legal driving limit - and Scotland has a lower limit than the rest of the UK. Don’t exceed NHS recommended weekly limits: 21 units for men and 14 units for women. Alcohol and salty snacks contribute to dehydration, making people irritable, so don’t forget to also provide jugs of chilled water jazzed up with winter berries or citrus peel. Try to enjoy the day - take time out to relax, and remember: a burnt turkey isn’t the end of the world!

Get them a bike for Christmas We all remember the thrill of getting a shiny new bike on Christmas morning

C

ycling is a great way to spend time with your kids and as they learn to get around on two-wheels, their confidence grows, giving them a sense of adventure and independence and, of course, keeping them fit. At Moore’s Cycles, we start at the very beginning of a child’s cycling journey by offering a range of aluminium or wooden balance bikes. These help teach balance and co-ordination. Our range of children’s bikes takes them from 18 months right up until their first adult bike. orthodontics Did you know that while many dentists have some training in orthodontics, only a few have specialist training? Dev Arya is one of them

W

e go to the dentist for any number of reasons, whether it’s to have a cavity checked out or a veneer fitted, but you always want to know that you are in expert hands. Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the development, prevention and correction of irregularities of the teeth, bite and jaw. Although many dentists have had some training in this area, only a few have had the many years of specialist training needed to correctly diagnose and treat cases. Dev Arya of Kew Dental Care trained in the UK and is registered on the Specialist List for Orthodontics. Says Dev: ‘The criteria for entrance to the list includes successfully completing a three year postgraduate training Masters programme in Orthodontics. I have been on the Specialist List for Orthodontics since 2001 and am an active member of the British Orthodontic Society and World Federation of Orthodontics.’ But it is not only her credentials that make Dev loved by her patients - as well as having many years of experience, she is calmly reassuring and takes the time needed to explain treatment options and do a great job. So why choose to go privately? The NHS is constrained by tight budgets which means only certain cases are eligible for treatment, using limited materials. It is also extremely

difficult to get adult orthodontics on the NHS. With private care, there is more time to spend with patients and treatment options are tailor-made for you. Private care can offer more orthodontic 'With private care options, such as: there is more time • conventional to spend with fixed braces but with toothpatients...' coloured brackets and less obtrusive wires (like Tom Cruise) • Lingual braces, that go on the inside of the teeth so that they are not visible (as worn by Kate Middleton before her wedding) • Invisalign - very thin, clear gum shields, worn almost invisibly over the teeth (pictured, bottom left). As an added bonus, where appropriate, the final set of aligners can be used as tooth whitening trays, so you can really show off your new smile! Dev says: ‘More and more adults are choosing to improve the look of their teeth and the lingual braces are particularly useful as they fit on the inside not the outside, so are almost undetectable. ‘Working alongside restorative dentists and an implantologist allows us at Kew Dental Care to provide comprehensive treatment planning for everyone, so do get in touch.’ Kew Dental Care 020 8878 7833 www.kewdentalcare.co.uk

fter an exciting summer picking up awards, the new season is now well under way at KPR. I’ve waved goodbye to my Under 18s, many of them moving on to university or the adult team. Now I face a new challenge – and it will mean big adjustments in my expectations. From strong-minded, newly independent young adults I will be keeping a bunch of butterfly brains focused on football and having fun – not as easy as it sounds! Welcome to the world of the Under 6s! The difference in ability within the younger groups is enormous, some already ‘get’ football while others have barely kicked a ball and that challenge will be to keep all players engaged every session. However, the really fascinating part of coaching is not just teaching players techniques and skills, it is about giving them

Theatre...

The Distance - 28 Nov - 19 Dec Good friends should be there for one another – no matter what. One night in Brighton, things threaten to slide into chaos... The Distance is a sharply funny play about motherhood (and fatherhood); about keeping control and letting go and about the bond of female friendship.
