his issue our focus is on Homes & Gardens. If you've just moved into the area or want to do up your home, this is the issue for you! Most people know Barnes resident, Alistair McGowan, for his BAFTA-winning series The Big Impression, but, as I found out when I met him, he is a man of many talents and is part of the Barnes Music Festival - find out more on pg 24. In the 12 years that I have been publishing the magazines, one of my main aims has to been to promote local businesses and the magazines have given a voice to hundreds of them over the years. Richmond town centre, while having many bigger chains, also has many wonderful independent businesses, so I was keen to talk to Erick Kervaon, chairman of Be Richmond, which now represents Richmond Town Centre, about how these shops are being helped to thrive in a difficult economic climate. refresh your home for SPRING As our gardens start to grow and blossom fills the trees, it’s time to think about refreshing and re-energising our homes ready for a stylish spring, says Katherine Sorrell Clear the clutter There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned tidy up to make your home feel re-booted. Heavy winter duvets, furry throws and cableknit hot water bottles can all be stored out of the way, while at the same time this is a good opportunity to go through shelves and cupboards and get rid of anything you no longer need. Give it to charity, hold a car boot sale, sell it in on Ebay – whatever works best. If it’s broken, mend it or throw it away; don’t let worn out, unusable and unnecessary items take up much-needed space. Let go of them and you’re bound to feel better: it’s like therapy for your interior. Clean house Now that you have lots of lovely clear space, you will probably notice that some of your house could do with an extra-special deep clean. How good will you feel when you have washed down your front door, wiped all your shelves and light fittings, shampooed your rugs, washed your loose covers and curtains and taken your duvets to the launderette? To say nothing of cleaning your mirrors and windows – there’s nothing like a bit of scrunched-up newspaper and white vinegar for giving them a wonderful sparkle. Have a brush with paint Take a long hard look at your paintwork. Be honest: has some of it seen better days? Perhaps windows need sanding and
repainting, or door frames need touch-ups where they’ve had knocks and bashes over the years? Or maybe a whole room could do with a makeover? You simply can’t beat the spickand-span look of a newly painted space; it’s a relatively quick and inexpensive DIY job that creates an overall impression going above and beyond the effort involved. Introduce colour Now’s the time to ditch dark, heavy and gloomy winter shades and get fresh with spring-like colour. Yellow, blue and green are all traditionally associated with spring – and it just so happens that Pantone’s colour of the year is gorgeous ‘Greenery’, described as ‘a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew’. Use liberally with plenty of bright white for a really clean, fresh look for the season.

Include a dash of pattern Your clean, clear backdrop of pale spring colours is perfect for adding pops of pattern to make an impact. Chevrons are still having a moment, as are triangles and geometrics in general (especially if they have a tribal feel), as well as tropicals, textures (think chunky knits or grassy weaves), graphic botanicals such as ferns and leaves and the natural patterns of marble and stone.
Bring the outdoors in Now the warmer weather is here, open the windows as much as possible, and get some air circulating around your home. It might even be warm enough to sit outside in a patch of sunshine – so think about pressure washing your patio, scrubbing up your barbecue and cleaning down your outdoor furniture ready for some outdoor entertaining. After all, it’s not that long until summer…

Up your game with accessories Out with the old and in with the new: replace accessories that have seen better days with on-trend items such as cushions and throws, duvet covers, vases, prints, small storage containers, mirrors, clocks, table lamps and plants (quick tip: grab a succulent, a cactus or an air plant for fashion-forward houseplant style). You really don’t have to spend a fortune to overhaul your look dramatically. Add some scent We all want a beautifully scented home – try reed diffusers with essential oils, or simply arrange locally sourced, scented flowers (the ones imported from abroad don’t tend to smell so good). And one last thing – if possible, try to dry your laundry in the sunshine outdoors – you just can’t beat that beautiful fresh smell.

FEEDING TIME
Just as the human body needs the right food for health and vitality, so do your garden lovelies
I
n the food world, we have become quite used to reading pack labels to establish ingredients – low fat, salt content, etc. so I’m now advocating that you do the same with plant fertilisers. First let’s take a brief look at the three major nutrients that are vital to a plant to guarantee it a healthy life.

Nitrogen (N) This is the plant’s leaf maker and is a major component of chlorophyll - the stuff that makes leaves green. Plants that will have the greatest need for nitrogen are those vegetables grown for their leaves and lawn grasses. If your plant’s lower leaves are turning yellow, but the growing tip remains reasonably green, your plant is calling out for nitrogen.

Iron is needed when the upper leaves look mottled green/yellow. However, if your flowering plant is producing lovely leaves, but it isn’t flowering, then the chances are you are feeding it too much nitrogen and not enough potassium (see below). Phosphorus (P) Often described as the plant’s root-maker. It’s a component of DNA and regulates the rate of growth and reproduction of cells at the plant’s growing tip (and this includes the growing roots, too) and germination of seeds. In a nutshell, no phosphate, no plant growth! Potassium (K) Potassium is needed by the plant to set flower buds, which then go on to give the plant sufficient energy for the buds to open to then set fruit and seeds. If your flowering plant is either not flowering at all, or getting to the point of producing flower buds that fail to open, then potassium is needed. All plant fertilisers must declare their nutrient content on the label. It’s expressed as a ratio, giving the values in a block of three numbers. For example, the plant food that I always recommend for flowering plants – a slow release granule product where one application will last for six months – the NPK ratio looks like 12:7:19. This reading tells me that there is a higher ratio of potassium to nitrogen and therefore perfect for all plants but the grass. With tomato food this will be twice the amount.

Alistair McGowan, best known for his BAFTA-winning TV show, The Big Impression, thrives on having a varied career. But appearing in front of a local audience at the Barnes Music Festival is possibly his biggest challenge yet
A
listair McGowan is not what I expected. Having seen him impersonating everyone from David Beckham to Jeremy Clarkson, I imagined he would be extrovert and super-confident. But meeting him at the private bar at The Olympic in Barnes, he is both charming and unassuming - and ever so slightly nervous at playing his biggest piano concert yet at The Barnes Music Festival. He has just done four hours of practise when we sit down and says he has been rehearsing way beyond what he does for other shows. ‘I feel very fortunate to play here. It goes without saying that I do a lot of preparation, but I will have to walk past all these people for the rest of the year – and I am sure some will come just to see how many mistakes I make!’ He is doubtless putting himself down – he released an album last year (The Piano Album), which was well received – and has a tour booked for August, combining piano with impressions. The album came about after he first appeared at the music festival in 2016. A representative from Sony happened to be in the audience and asked if was interested in doing an album. ‘I thought, hold on, that’s the only piece I can play!’ But he spent the next year honing his skills and ended up with 18 pieces for the album. While Alistair had a couple of earlier stints of playing the piano – as a child and again in his 30s – he only really started playing properly just over three years ago, happily limiting himself to pieces that mean something to him: ‘That’s the beauty of coming back to music as a mature adult. I know what I want to play, why I want to play it and how I want to play it. 24
As child you can be told to play a certain piece that doesn’t really interest you, but desire is such a huge part of playing and I really feel I’m making up for lost time.’ While performing music has come later in life – he’s 53 – his career took off from his student days at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. A friend, seeing him doing impressions, told him he should take it further and he got his big break on the award-winning The Big Impression, acting alongside his then girlfriend, Ronnie Ancona. ‘I always wanted to be an actor. The one thing I never wanted to do was impressions! It just happened by default as I was good at it. I made a name for myself, but it was never what I set out to do.’ As a comedian Alistair has appeared in countless shows, both on TV and radio, including The Clive James Comedy Show, Spitting Image and First Impressions, as well as playing straight roles in Bleak House and Leonardo. His first stage play, Timing, was nominated for Best New Comedy. Last year he took on the role of his favourite composer, Erick Satie, playing an ‘all-nighter’ in Birmingham. As well as writing books, presenting and directing, he is also a keen environmentalist and won’t drive. He has just started working on a new set of characters for the first time in nearly five years for upcoming TV and radio shows, including Judge Rinder, Eddie Redmayne, Will Self and Piers Morgan. To get into character, rather than watching hours of footage, he concentrates on a snapshot of that person: ‘You can get a person’s mannerisms and the way they speak in just one minute of speech. There’s almost a musical element to it – you’re trying to learn the music of their voice.'

At the Festival, Alistair will be performing with his teacher, the internationally renowned pianist and fellow Barnes resident, Anthony Hewitt, as well as his wife, the singer Charlotte Page, whom he met when they performed in The Mikado together. There will be a real cross section of music, including Marcello, Liszt, Grieg, Ravel, with a little bit of Gershwin and, of course, Satie. He’s not pretending to be the most accomplished musician in the world but wants to share his love for classical music and part of his mission is to bring it to a wider audience: ‘You don’t hear classical pieces as much as you used to. I’m under no illusions about my ability, but I suppose I’m trying to inspire people.’ He loves living in Barnes and has been here for 17 years – ‘I moved to Brighton for a year, but I missed it, so I moved back’ – and uses all the independent shops - ‘Two Peas in a Pod is our lifeblood!' – so performing amongst his neighbours is a big deal. ‘I really want to do well. Tucked away behind Putney High Street, something really special...
Y
ears ago I used to work near what is now called Putney Wharf, but back then was just a yard with offices above old stables. While the charm of the old buildings has gone and the area regenerated, they have been replaced by a more vibrant collection of restaurants, cafes and, towering above them, swanky apartments. Once a month I attend an early morning networking event and, more alert than I should be at that time of the day, I have always noticed Bistro Vadouvan – in a great location on the river. While the décor is rather pedestrian, the food is very definitely not. When we arrived, we received a warm welcome from the staff. The restaurant is French cuisine with elements from the Middle East, Asia and India. For my starter I had the Middle Eastern beef tartare with smoked aubergine, tahini dressing and flaked almonds (£9.50, pictured). Exquisitely presented – finely chopped raw beef on a bed delicate salad and the soft, warm aubergine – and, really, heaven on a plate. The nearest I have been to tasting such a dish was at Petersham Nurseries. Maybe not surprising the flavours were so tangible as the chef-patron comes from a Michelin-star background. Durga Misra worked under Eric Chavot for five years at his two Michelin star Capital hotel in Belgravia, before becoming head chef at Joe Antunes’s Kitchen and then heading up Chavot’s Brasserie Chavot in
Mayfair. And now at Putney Wharf. Lucky us. My husband, Alex went for the Green Vadouvan Salad (£8) – a combination of tenderstem broccoli and green beans tossed in coconut, lime and Vadouvan dressing. The taste lingered as the spices hit their spot and the crunchy firmness of the vegetables were enveloped in the sweet and sour of the coconut and lime. Alex, not usually one to be able to express his feelings, said the flavours just kept coming and was in raptures. For mains, I was keen to try the lamb and Merguez winter warmer (£17.50) - slow cooked shoulder of lamb, tahini yoghurt and Yemeni zough (green chilli relish). The lamb, was tender and the zough – a first for me – was a delicious accompaniment. Alex’s Cornish Brill was poached in coconut broth with shitake and enochi mushrooms, accompanied by prawn ravioli (£17.50). The flavour was all down to the broth and the taste of fresh coriander. He said he’d died and gone to heaven. Thoughtfully, were both given spoons to mop up the juices. We went for very different puddings – Alex chose from the specials, having the crème fraiche custard tart with rhubarb (£6.95) while I had exotic cheesecake with passion fruit creameux (£6.50). Richmond businesses Erick Kervaon talks to Pippa Duncan about Be Richmond, which represents businesses in the town
W
hile Richmond recently topped a poll as the happiest place to live in London, it was also voted as one of the Top 10 most vibrant retail destinations, beating other centres such as Westfield Stratford, Canary Wharf and the West End. But it takes hard work behind the scenes to make the town attractive and to keep pulling in visitors as well as locals, and the area’s success has, in part, been due to the launch of Be Richmond, the ‘brand persona’ of Richmond BID (Business Improvement District) in 2016, which represents the businesses within the BID area. The BID – a non-profit organisation launched following a vote of local businesses, with larger businesses contributing a levy which goes towards improving and promoting the area. So how is the town centre, with its large chains and small independent businesses, benefitting? As a keen supporter of independent businesses myself, I talked to Erick Kervaon, Chairman of the Be Richmond board, alongside his full time job as General Manager at The Bingham hotel and running two independent businesses in the hospitality industry, to find out what the future holds. Erick, what is Be Richmond? ‘Be Richmond is now the brand representing Richmond town centre. We wanted to promote more than just the local businesses, as Richmond offers so much more – we have beautiful scenery, a long history and local personalities, which all contribute to the area and which is why we want to promote it as a place to live, work and explore. If we can improve the look and feel of the area, then both businesses and residents are benefitting.’ Larger local businesses pay a levy – what are they getting for their money? ‘We wanted to make the whole area look
more appealing so, with that in mind, we’ve worked with Richmond Council to have extra cleaning in the streets and with the Met Police to help make the area more secure. We’ve improved the signage, so that it’s easier for visitors to find their way around. Part of our strategy is employing a marketing company to create a great website (berichmond.london) and spread the word about what a great place Richmond is to visit.’ What about the smaller businesses, who haven’t paid the levy – is their voice still being heard? ‘Yes! We are really keen to help every

business registered in Richmond. Apart from the project director, we are all volunteers at Be Richmond, so we need businesses to come to us – big and small - and tell us what they would like improved in the area and how we can help them. We’d love to build up the website and would welcome contributions from smaller businesses – the more information we have about local businesses, the more useful the website will be.’ Are you just flying the flag for shops – or also those businesses without a ‘shop front’? ‘We are trying improve the area as a whole, which will benefit every business in Richmond and encourage more people to visit, work and spend their money here. And it’s not just businesses we help – I was recently asked by residents to get the telephone box on Richmond Green re-painted. They’d been fighting for this for years, but there just wasn’t the budget. I promised them it would get done – and ended up painting it myself!’ How can local businesses find out what’s going on and how they can contribute? 'We hold quarterly networking meetings in Richmond and would love more local businesses to attend. It’s a great way to build contacts, promote your business, learn about the work we are doing and also to find out how everyone can get involved. We all need to work together to make Richmond an even better place to work and live. Nobody is there to sell anything, we all just want to share our knowledge and understanding of what’s happening locally.' What are the plans for the future? ‘As well as making it the cleanest and safest place to live and work we are also working on a new Be Richmond app, which will help workers and residents benefit from promotions and events hosted by local retailers. We will also be organising future May Fairs on Richmond Green and intend to make it a destination event to bring more people to the area.’

'The mad women of Kew' This year we are celebrating 100 years since women first got the vote and local women played an active part in the suffragette movement. But it was the destruction of orchids and the arson attack on the Tea Pavilion in Kew Gardens, in February 1913, that made headline news

I
n the early hours of 20 February 1913, two women crept into Kew Gardens and made their way to the popular Tea Pavilion. Shrouded by darkness they started a fire that soon enveloped the whole building. A Kew worker spotted the women and raised the alarm and two policemen, who had seen the flames, ran towards the Gardens and pursued the women as they desperately tried to escape, throwing away incriminating evidence as they ran. The first campaign to give women the vote started in the 1860s and led to the founding of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) by Millicent Fawcett in 1897. Their aim was to seek the vote by constitutional means but, as the years went on, many women felt there needed to be a more militant campaign. So, in 1903, Emmeline Pankhurst formed the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), moving away from
traditional political pressure through lobbying, to direct action. While violent protests had taken place before 1912, this escalated after the Prime Minister, Herbert Asquith, made it clear that he was against women having the vote. The violence reached its peak in 1913, both nationally and locally. The burning of the Pavilion wasn’t the first act against Kew Gardens: only days earlier the Orchid Houses were attacked - with windows broken and many orchids destroyed - but the culprits were not caught, only leaving leaflets supporting the suffragettes, resulting in the newspaper headline ‘The Mad Women of Kew’. Acts of protest often occurred locally: potassium permanganate was put in post boxes in Kew, Richmond and Twickenham, the corrosive material destroying the mail; protest meetings were held at Marble Hill Park and a house was burned down in Hampton by Mary Richardson,

who later went on to mutilate Velazquez’s Rokeby Venus in the National Gallery. There were active WSPU branches in Richmond and Hampton and Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, living Local suffragette, Princess in a grace and Sophia Duleep Singh, whose favour home jewellery was seized for at Hampton non-payment of taxes Court Palace, became the president of the Hampton branch. She led the Tax Resistance League, refusing to pay taxes, saying it was ‘taxation without representation’. Her jewellery was regularly seized for non-payment of taxes and auctioned at Twickenham Town Hall, but friends bought the sequestered articles back for her.
The two women caught running away from Kew were Lillian Lenton and Joyce Locke (real name Olive Wharry) and they were taken immediately to Holloway Prison. They both went on hunger strike and the Daily Report on Suffragette Prisoners for Lillian reads: ‘Has taken no food since reception. Smashed up everything in the cell she was first placed in. Removed to a special strong cell. Kept apart from all other prisoners and not allowed to communicate. All privileges suspended.’ They were both force-fed but Lilian became so ill that she was discharged earlier than Olive who had managed to hide her hunger strike by giving her food away to others. By 1914 the NUWSS considered the WSPU were undermining the suffragette cause by their direct action campaign. However, on 4 August 1914, war was declared and many women, regardless of whether they believed in direct action or not, played a leading part in the war effort. On 31 January 1918, women over 30 were granted the right to vote in parliamentary elections. Change had begun.

•Kew Pond needs help! Did you know that the pond next to Kew Green – often seen with a wonderful array of birdlife - needs to be regularly re-filled? The pond is thought to date back to the time of the Norman
Conquest. It became part of a fishery in the 10th century but, by the 18th century, had become a horse pond – a place for riders and horse-drawn carriages to let their horses drink and cool down after a long journey. Cattle and livestock also used the pond, which made it unsanitary. Because of this, there were calls to have it filled in, but it has been saved many times, thanks to locals. Volunteers planted vegetation to improve the look and also open and close the valve from the river every month, to allow it to fill up. Persistent stress can affect our health and even cause serious illness, so we need to know how to deal with it

tress can refer to two different but related things: situations or events that put pressure on us, and our reaction to that pressure. Stress can affect your mental health, causing problems such as depression. It can also affect your physical health by disrupting sleeping or eating habits and cause excess cortisol and adrenaline release. What causes stress? There can be many factors, but common ones include: • A big life event, such as bereavement, moving home, financial crises, exams, redundancy, retirement, job change, a relationship breakup, illness or injury • Continual pressure: in your job, health or relationship or overwhelming responsibilities • Feeling out of control and unable to change situations • Uncertainty, such as potential redundancy
• Lack of change, purpose or activity • Clutter and disorganisation, for instance, always running late. Research shows just the sight of clutter causes stress. Your stress threshold may depend on your perception of the situation, your positivity, your mental health and emotional resilience and the support you receive.
