Is the old adage “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning” true, or is it just an old wives’ tale? Weather moves from west to east in the mid-latitudes. The prevailing winds are westerlies. This means storm systems generally move in from the west.

www. sailbarnegatwitch.com 6 Summer 2013 6

The colors we see in the sky are due to the rays of sunlight being split into colors of the spectrum as they pass through the atmosphere and ricochet off the water vapor and particles in the atmosphere. The amounts of water vapor and dust particles in the atmosphere are good indicators of weather conditions. They also determine which colors we will see in the sky. During sunrise and sunset the sun is low in the sky, and it transmits light through the thickest part of the atmosphere. A red sky suggests an atmosphere loaded with dust and moisture particles. We see the red, because red wavelengths (the longest in the color spectrum) are breaking through the atmosphere. The shorter wavelengths, such as blue, are scattered and broken up.

Red sky at night, sailors delight.

When we see a red sky at night, this means that the setting sun is sending its light through a high concentration of dust particles. This usually indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Basically good weather will follow.

Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning.

A red sunrise can mean that a high pressure system (good weather) has already passed, thus indicating that a storm system (low pressure) may be moving to the east. A morning sky that is a deep, fiery red can indicate that there is high water content in the atmosphere. So, rain could be on its way. (For more fun science facts visit: www.loc.gov)

In 1886 a railroad trestle was

built across Manahawkin Bay, connecting railway between Beach Haven and Barnegat City . Previously travelers rode from Tuckerton (or Edge Cove) or Toms River and connected to steamships or ferries to reach LBI. Seven miles of track was laid for the northern extension; last stop Barnegat City (Barnegat Light). A small fishing village, Barnegat City was home to two luxurious hotels, The Sunset and The Oceanic. The new railway allowed visitors and goods needed for more comfortable living to reach the shore quickly. The Tuckerton, Pennsylvania Railroad and Baldwin Locomotive were all principal stockholders and brought this project to life. Wealthy friends from Philadelphia and New York built houses along the railway between 1880-the 1920’s. Several rotten old wheel barrow parts have been found in the woods and dunes between 10th and 15th street that were used for hauling luggage from the train to visitors’ cottages.

Small communities popped up along the railway between Beach Haven and Barnegat City- Spray Beach 1889; Beach Haven Terrace, Brant Beach and Surf City 1899 and Harvey Cedars 1894. Although most of the houses built were seasonal, the presence of the railroad made business and year round living more comfortable. Twelve and Central Ave., Barnegat City was the last stop on the line where pound fishery dock workers loaded fish to be shipped to metropolitan markets. The salt hay that was gathered in the meadows relied on the railroad to create the eel grass industry. In 1914 the first automobile bridge is built connecting the mainland and after severe winter storms damaging the beaches diminished the use of the railroad. In 1935 the railway bridge to the mainland was washed away leaving the entire island without railway service and it was never replaced.

Discover Barnegat Light Day

Interested in learning more about what makes Barnegat Light a wonderful travel destination? Curious about what earned it the Frommer’ 2010 accolade as “one of the coolest small towns in the US”? Then be sure to mark your calendar for this year’s Discover Barnegat Light Day! On Monday, July 13th, the Barnegat Light Tourism Coalition will host this 2nd annual event. BLTC President Dan Malay indicates, “Through this event, we seek to highlight all that makes Barnegat Light unique and special.” The day is sure to do just that, with stops and stations throughout town. Stop by the Coast Guard station for a boat tour, or check out the Clam Upweller at 10th St and the Bay to learn more about local efforts to replenish the clam population in the Barnegat Bay. The Police K-9 demonstration is always a hit with the kids, as well as an opportunity to climb through a fire truck and ambulance. Always a crowd-pleaser for the whole family is the Viking Village Dock Tour and seafood tasting; a great opportunity to get a glimpse of the inner workings of one of the East Coast’s busiest commercial seafood port, and the foundation of Barnegat Light’s rich historical heritage. The highlight of the day includes plans for a mini street fair along Broadway Avenue. Carnival-type attractions and an antique car show all set to live music will anchor this aspect of the day’s events, and worth a stroll through. While you’re there, be sure to cast your vote for your favorite antique car! (Trophies will be awarded to the winners). Local businesses will also host all types of unique stops, including face painting, tattoos, and Bed & Breakfast tea tours. For a nightcap, come on out for the tunes of a local band at the evening concert, part of Barnegat Light’s Monday Night Summer Concert Series. At the start of the concert, we’ll draw winners for the day’s raffle giveaways, including gift baskets that feature the “Taste of Barnegat Light” and the “Threads of Barnegat Light.” Don’t forget to enjoy local Barnegat Light restaurants and ice cream shops before taking on a night climb at the Barnegat Lighthouse! For more information about Discover Barnegat Light Day, visit www.DiscoverBarnegatLight or contact BLtourism@yahoo.com. Please note that all events featured above were accurate at the time of publishing, and are subject to change.

SINBAD OF THE COASTGUARD, mascot of the USS CAMPBELL AND OF BARNEGAT LIGHT This famous war dog lived at the Barnegat Light Coast Guard Station until his death in 1951. He was honored with a full military funeral and was placed to rest at the foot of the flag pole at the Barnegat Light Coast Guard Station, his grave is marked by a bronze plaque. Thoughout the centuries many ships have had mascots--cats, dogs, moneys, parrots-- especially during World War 11. Many were adopted as part of the ship’s crew but none ever achieved the stature of Sinbad. His fame extended to sailors of all countries and to ports around the world. Sinbad was a full member of the U.S. Coast Guard with his own service number, medical history, bunk, uniforms, and battle station.

The Commander and the crew considered Sinbad essential to the morale of the sailors. Sinbad was so much a part of the Campbell that when the famous naval historian Samuel Eliot Morison had a coat of arms designed for the ship, Sinbad was placed on top of the crest). Sinbad’s memory lives on the new Campbell Cutter where a stature of Sinbad has a special place on the mess deck. It is considered a good luck symbol for the ship. When the ship is underway it flys a large “Sinbad Lives” flag while underway. War dogs are as important to the service men today as they were in the 1945 and there are many Sinbad’s helping to keep America safe today.

…at Barnegat Light’s Dog Park

There’s a magical place on 10th Street in Barnegat Light, and it’s especially delightful during the dog days of summer. Stop by on any given day and you’re likely to find dogs and their humans enjoying a visit with each other. Local residents strive to make Barnegat Light a unique and special place for visitors each summer with its historic Lighthouse, little shops, beautiful beaches, great restaurants, charming fishing village and historic homes. Now it’s even more so! Why? Because it’s dog friendly and has the only Dog Park on Long Beach Island!! Who Runs Barnegat Light’s Dog Park: The dog park is owned by the Borough of Barnegat Light and maintained by the Public Works Department.

How it Came to Be: In 2013 Since it’s inception the Dog Park has become the gathering place for fun, frolic, socialization and unbounded canine energy. Dogs relish the chance to bring their favorite toys to chase, catch and share with their doggy friends. It’s here that they can burn off endless energy and meet new friends while their families are vacationing. What Makes the Dog Park so Happy? Those fabulous Dog Portraits of Barnegat Pooches. The idea for the Dog Portraits was conceived a few years ago by local resident Cricket Luker, owner of

Wildflowers By the Lighthouse and Wildflowers Too! Cricket’s love of dogs (and all animals) goes back to her childhood. 12 Years ago, she began the Annual Barnegat Dog Show held on August 13 as a birthday party celebration and community fundraising event for the local Humane Society. It has become a beloved summertime tradition each year with dozens of dogs participating in the red carpet event vying for prizes in multiple categories like best costume, tricks, and best kisser. While a customer was visiting Wildflowers they began discussing the upcoming Dog Show. The customer mentioned her son painted dog portraits. That planted a seed in Cricket’s creative mind. Later that evening as she was preparing prizes for the next day’s Dog Show, she had an idea to marry the local interest with local talent. As the idea grew from creative concept to reality others joined in to the project. All dogs would be local residents or visitors to Barnegat Light. A plan was made, a sponsor was needed, space was donated, materials were purchased, artists were hired, dogs were interviewed, owners commissioned their pet’s portraits, and portrait sittings were scheduled to take place over the course of two weeks in August of 2013. Whew! The portraits were painted on exterior plywood with exterior paint and finished with a sealer. Next they were safely stored at Wildflowers Too!

Art Gallery while logistics were worked out. Finally Cricket met with the borough council to secure permission and approval to hang the portraits. The result was eight fabulous and colorful 4’ x 4’ Dog Portraits that you can see on display at the Dog Park. The portraits are available to view from Memorial Day through the Fall Chowder Fest held in October. Then they are removed to storage to protect them from the harsh elements of winter for next season. While the Portraits were first hung in August of 2013, they have become another local landmark within the community of dog lovers for all to enjoy. Now you know why Summer Yappy Hour is so much better in Barnegat. No one appreciates the very special genius of your conversations as your dog does. As someone once said, “Dogs laugh with their tails.”

75 years of Grace! Zion Lutheran Church is celebrating its 75th Anniversary as a Community of Faith this 2015! Barnegat Light, founded in 1694 has always defined herself by the rugged beauty of the bay and sea united by a small strip of land. This land breeds a people who love the majesty of the water, the sand and all the creatures great and small who thrive therein. Barnegat’s earliest residents were Scandinavian in origin and made their livelihood fishing the seas and the harvesting the bounty of the bays surrounding our island. They had a hard life working the sea but they were determined to survive and thrive in this new land along the New Jersey coast. From this hearty stock of Norwegians and

Swedes came a people rooted in the Christian tradition of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. Seeking to have a church of their own, the Lutherans of Long Beach Island met in the 1930’s to discuss the possibility of establishing a Lutheran congregation of their own. And so it began, the Lutheran Church on Long Beach Island. Slowly, steadily and not without its struggles and disappointments, yet with the grace of God and the determination of God’s People, the first Lutheran congregation was launched in 1940. Initially, the Lutheran Church at LBI began with two sites for worship. One in Beach Haven, named Holy Trinity and the second in Barnegat Light named Zion! And the story continues from there. Nineteen forty seems like such a long time ago, but in the life of a congregation these years tell of an amazing story that continues to grow. Seventy five years is not too long a time for a church community. In fact Zion is 24

feeling rather young and spry as we celebrate this 75th Anniversary year. This past year we saw new upgrades at many levels to the congregation’s life. A new Video/ Camera was installed, a new contemporary outdoor summer service begins, the bell chimes in the steeple are repaired, a new interactive web site is launched and new mission opportunities and celebrations are planned for the 75th Anniversary Year. The Story, Zion Lutheran’s story is one of people loving God and their community, working together for the good of all. We respect our heritage in the Lutheran Christian tradition yet really find ourselves a very ecumenical community of people from many different denominations and ways of life. We want to thank God for his faithfulness throughout our history and look forward to the amazing future that God has in store for us all. Please feel warmly welcomed to stop for a visit! You’ll find a young at heart community of people of all ages who love their church home and want to invite others to share the bounty of God’s grace as we make our home by the sea at Barnegat Light!

Gone Fishing...

Barnegat Light, known for its wide variety of fishing, is located “six miles at sea” on the north end of fabulous Long Beach Island, New Jersey. This summertime paradise provides many outdoor activities, especially fishing for all kinds of edible seafood. Recreational and commercial fishing activity thrive in this area due to easy access to the rich open waters of the Atlantic Ocean, which is actively maintained for safe passage. It’s close in proximity to Barnegat Bay, also abundant with sea life. All types of fishermen can take advantage of these healthy resources.

Whatever your age, income level, or fitness ability, anyone can participate in recreational fishing. Whether its fishing off the beach or jetty anytime of day or renting a private boat, little investment is needed. Charter boats are available where a private group can rent a larger boat with their own captain for a private excursion, but if you prefer a fun crowd, jump on a headboat; the Miss Barnegat Light or the Carolynn Ann III are open to anyone and sail daily in the summer months.

Commercial Fishing

Since 1692, when the British deeded the community, fishing has been a serious business venture on LBI and profitable because of their abundance. For many years, codfish was the most abundant fish to catch, and also very close by. Fish are caught off Barnegat Light and sold in markets all over the world, past and present, providing for a major financial contribution to the local economy. Moreover, commercial fishing is Barnegat Light’s heritage. It was one of the first businesses along our coasts and provides a wonderful, intriguing attraction to visitors who are interested to find out about the commercial fishing industry. Visit Viking Village and learn about our history and what we do here, at a dock tour: July & August at 10AM every Friday! Also, don’t forget to enjoy a local fish dinner at your favorite restaurant or visit a local fish market to get something ready to cook at home. Two commercial docks have operated for many years in Barnegat Light: Independent Fish Co. (now known as Viking Village) and Myers Dock (now known as Lighthouse Marina).

The traditional fishing methods included gillnetting and pound boat fishing which were not far off the beach, catching fluke, weakfish, bluefish, and shad. In recent years other fisheries have flourished using larger offshore vessels, including scallopers and longliners, which catch pelagic fish and tilefish. Tilefish became a very important longline fish caught on the edge of the deep water canyons in the 1970s and is still being fished today. Seasonally, longliners venture offshore to catch prized bigeye and yellowfin tuna, along with swordfish and mahi-mahi, all great for the backyard grills! Sea scalloping has become the most active and lucrative fishing, caught with a dredge being towed across the bottom of the ocean. Gillnet boats still go out on a daily basis, weather permitting, targeting fish such as bluefish, monkfish, croakers, and various types of sharks, including spiny dogfish. Trawlers (draggers) are also actively catching mostly fluke, sea bass, squid,

and porgies on a very limited schedule.

Today’s Challenges With such a demand for seafood and the popularity of catching it for sport, commercial and recreational fishermen have been overwhelmed by heavy government regulations. Management plans limit what all fishermen can catch, how many, and what size. Environmental pressure has become the norm to protect our local, wild species, and fishermen have responded with strict conservation practices. Responsible and sustainable fishing practices are exercised by both fisheries, making fish stocks healthier than ever, now and for future generations to come. Be sure to check the limitations of rod and reel fishing before you venture out to catch what you hope is your dinner. Not knowing the laws could result in substantial fines.
