Buying Selling Renting Don’t Let The Sun Set On Your LBI Dreams

Wonderful Winter Sunrise & Sunsets Winter sunsets are gorgeous. Since earth is tilted, the sun rises and sets at a lower angle during the winter causing the suns rays pass through more atmosphere. The different wavelengths will scatter and absorb causing a very colorful sunset. It’s worth the trip to witness these wonderful sunsets. Crisp winter air allows breathtaking views of the night sky. Sit on the beach and view the constellation Orion and his dog. Orion can only be seen (in northern hemisphere) during the winter months. It is hidden by the sun in the summer. Hence the name “the dog days of summer” referring to Orion’s dog.

“Keep off the Dunes

Photos and article by Pat Trotter

Sand dunes are beautiful to look at but they also serve important functions. Dunes proved to be vital to protecting many beach communities during the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy. They act as a natural barrier against storms and are home to many plants and animals such as shore birds, migrating birds, wildlife and vegetation. On LBI there have been on-going dune grass plantings in an effort to help protect the dunes. While beachgrass is vital to dunes, recent research places emphasis on planting a diverse mix of vegetation. In addition, dune grass should be planted in circles or randomly and not in rows as has been commonly done. The New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium recently published an updated dune manual, Dune it Right, available at njseagrant.org/dunemanual. The manual provides instructions on how to protect dunes and make them more resilient. Of course, staying off the dunes goes without saying!

Beach Paws

One of the great joys of living on LBI all winter is the opportunity to take your dog on the beach and to take long walks around the neighborhood fairly uninterrupted. But this privilege carries with it the importance of responsible pet ownership. If we want the beaches to remain open to our furry friends we need to be good stewards of the beach and ocean and mindful of others using the beach. Believe it or not, not everyone loves our dogs! Be sure not to let your dogs run on the dunes – when it says keep off the dunes it means them too. Note where and when you can and can’t take dogs on the beach. For instance the wildlife refuge at the south end of the island (Holgate) is off limits to dogs all year round. Every dog should have basic canine good citizen manners. When out walking your dog be mindful of where they are at all times, especially when walking through a crowded area. Just because your dog is on a leash doesn’t mean he is under control or not bothering people. A good practice is to carry dog treats with you at all times, or a favorite toy, to keep your dog’s attention on you. Practicing sits and downs also are useful. Just keep it fun and don’t use coercion or force. If you intend to take a walk on the beach with your dog, it’s a good idea to walk him along the street first and make sure he has relieved himself. Be sure to pick up after your pet – just because most people close up their houses for the winter doesn’t mean their yards are public bathrooms for your canine friends. Never leave dog waste on the beach – ever! Carry poop bags with you at all times and dispose of

them properly. Dog waste is an environmental pollutant. In 1991, it was labeled a non-point source pollutant by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), placing it in the same category as herbicides and insecticides; oil, grease and toxic chemicals; and acid drainage from abandoned mines. EPA even estimates that two or three days’ worth of droppings from a population of about 100 dogs would contribute enough bacteria to temporarily close a bay, and all watershed areas within 20 miles of it, to swimming and shell fishing.* If your dog does not come readily when called but you want to give him some space while walking on the beach you might want to invest in a 15 or 30 foot training line – this is better than a flexi lead which only encourages your dog to pull. Every time your dog returns to you reward him with a small treat. He will learn that being near you is the best place to be. So don’t forget: Carry poop bags with you at all times and use them! Carry treats in your pocket at all times to reward your dog for paying attention to you. Invest in a long training line to give your dog some space when walking on the beach. Keep dogs off the dunes and off the wildlife refuge year round. Enjoy the beautiful beach! *http://www.doodycalls.com/resources-toxic-dog-waste/

Don’t forget about wind chill factor. If you’ve ever noticed that the windier it is the colder it feels then you’re experiencing what is known as the wind chill factor. The wind carries away our body heat very quickly, and will do so even quicker when we are wet – this is what makes the temperature feel much colder than it actually is. Being a smaller body mass than us, and more likely to be wet from wading through snow, our dogs will feel the cold more quickly than we will .

The deep blue ocean continues sending waves to crash onto the cold wet sand. How I miss the hot summer days of bare feet and umbrellas but there is a beauty in the harsh winter day. A stillness as far as the eye can see. Yet life abounds below the surface. Dolphins, whales and seals are commonly seen. Our ocean is wonderful all year long. If you are lucky enough to leave close to the beach make sure you take the time to visit during the winter months.

They are able to do so comfortably due to the thick layers of blubber they have under their skin. This fat helps to keep them well insulated. Many people lump seals into the same category as whales and dolphins. While they do have quite a few similarities, there is one fact that sets them apart. All species of seals give birth to their offspring on land rather than in the water.

Feliz Navidad Christmas in Mexico is one of the biggest fiestas, or holidays, observed in the country. There are two full weeks of celebrations, and everyone tries to get those last two weeks of December off of work. The tradition of Christmas poinsettias originated in Mexico, where they are called flores de Navidad, or Christmas flowers.

In Northern Mexico, Santa Clos (Santa Claus) brings children large gifts on Christmas Day, and Los Reyes Magos give smaller gifts in January. Los Reyes Magos is Spanish for “the three wise men.” Presents are sometimes opened very early on Christmas Day, right after the midnight mass and accompanying feast.

10% off Entree 15% off Seniors Expires 1/15/18

The Christmas season in Mexico runs from December 9 to January 6, with one last related celebration on February 2. Candlemass is celebrated on February 2, as it commemorates the presentation of the Child Jesus to the temple. On this day, people bring their images of the Child Jesus to be blessed. These are elaborately dressed, traditionally in christening gowns but many other costumes have since appeared as well. Afterwards, tamales and atole are shared, purchased by the people who found the miniature Jesus images on January 6.

Special cake called Rosca de Reyes is baked for Three King's Day in January. The oval sweetbread is decorated with candied fruit and has a small figurine of Jesus hidden inside. Whoever gets the piece of cake with the figurine is responsible for hosting the celebration at Candlemas in February, as well as providing the new set of christening clothes for the infant Jesus in the Nacimiento at the church.

Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burns

Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgot, and old lang syne? CHORUS: For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we'll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne. And surely you’ll buy your pint cup! and surely I’ll buy mine! And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne. CHORUS We two have run about the slopes, and picked the daisies fine; But we’ve wandered many a weary foot, since auld lang syne. CHORUS We two have paddled in the stream, from morning sun till dine; But seas between us broad have roared since auld lang syne.
