Barnegat Light’s commercial fishing industry began in the late 1800’s and its reputation continues to grow to this day. Commercial fishing is the lifeblood of our community, the livelihood of many local residents and thus our heritage. Several generations of fishermen make their home in Barnegat Light, NJ. Each day numerous commercial fishing vessels depart from Barnegat Light’s docks to head out into open seas. Each excursion is unpredictable. Over the years as well as just recently, tragedies have occurred resulting in the deaths of dedicated, devoted fishermen. Island are embracing a new community project called the “Fishermen’s Story Memorial”. A magnificent bronze sculpted monument is under construction to honor all those who have died at sea pursuing their livelihood by commercial fishing, which remains the country’s most dangerous profession. The construction of this monument will serve to honor their memory and become a place of reverence and reflection for family members, friends and the general public. The project has been approved by the NJDEP and the site of the monument is in the Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, the most frequently visited State Park in New Jersey. It will sit just to the west of “Ole Barney” certainly the most recognized Lighthouse in New Jersey. The complete cost of the project is estimated to be in excess of $80,000. Most local residents and small businesses have already donated. Fundraiser events are being held but we are in need of more money. This monument will serve as a beacon of enlightenment for many generations long past our lifetime. Our dedication will be taking place this summer on a date to be announced. All are welcome to attend. To send in a donation, please use the voucher. Follow our progress on Facebook: Fishermen’s Story Memorial Fund.

www.DiscoverBarnegatLight.com Last fall, the Harlequin Ducks were often inside the inlet, hugging the rocks. For decades, this has been the best and most consistent spot in the state for these beautiful northern ducks. They usually linger until early April, rarely into the first week of May. The triangular lagoon formed by the new breakwater in the old jetty was filled with Sea Ducks last fall. Ten common eiders and all three Scoters were joined by Red Breasted Mergansers and Oldsquaw. King Eider also occur here each year. It will be interesting to see how the shifting sands will affect this area; it might fill in completely.

One of the most abundant birds across North America, and one of the most boldly colored, the Redwinged Blackbird is a familiar sight atop cattails, along soggy roadsides, and on telephone wires. Glossy-black males have scarletand-yellow shoulder patches they can puff up or hide depending on how confident they feel. Females are a subdued, streaky brown, almost like a large, dark sparrow. In the North, their early arrival and tumbling song are happy indications of the return of spring.

Belted Kingfisher

With its top-heavy physique, energetic flight, and piercing rattle, the Belted Kingfisher seems to have an air of selfimportance as it patrols up and down rivers and shorelines. It nests in burrows along earthen banks and feeds almost entirely on aquatic prey, diving to catch fish and crayfish with its heavy, straight bill. These ragged-crested birds are a powdery blue-gray; males have one blue band across the white breast, while females have a blue and a chestnut band.

GREAT BLUE HERON

The tall, long-legged great blue heron is the most common and largest of North American herons.

Great blue herons are waders, typically seen along coastlines, in marshes, or near the shores of ponds or streams. They are expert fishers. Herons snare their aquatic prey by walking slowly, or standing still for long periods of time and waiting for fish to come within range of their long necks and blade-like bills. The deathblow is delivered with a quick thrust of the sharp bill, and the prey is swallowed whole. Great blue herons have been known to choke to death by attempting to swallow fish too large for their long, S-shaped necks. Though they are best known as fishers, mice constitute a large part of their diet, and they also eat insects and other small creatures. 10 Summer 2013

Migrating Butterflies Flying

utterfly migration takes place every spring and fall. If you are fortunate enough to be on LBI in the spring or fall you'll see them everywhere. They migrate to Mexico, where they lay eggs and die. Their first generation offspring will be born around March and continue the migration north. They'll lay eggs and die around May. The second generation will be born and continue the migration. The cycle will continue with the third generation. They'll then make it to the Great Lakes area where they will die. It is the forth generation that will fly back to Mexico. Once they reach Mexico, they will hibernate for the winter. In the spring they start the flight back north, lay eggs and die. It takes three generations to get back to the north but only one generation to fly south.

Spend the day on our natural expansive beaches. Experience the

majesty of our mountainous sand dunes. Unlike any other town, we operate a tram ride to the waters edge between 4th and 9th streets. 13th street offers a nature trail and many of the street ends have boardwalks for easy accessibility. Climb the Lighthouse and see the outstanding views of the bay, inlet and ocean. At dusk, sit under Barney’s new beam and watch the rotating laser ray of light over the water. Pick up a basketball game, a tennis match or risk it all at the skate park. Take your best friend Fido to romp in the dog park. Walk along Bayview Ave and checkout the silhouettes of the commercial fishing fleet at sunset. Barnegat Light is a great place to ride a bike, rent a boat or fly a kite.

If you see these signs…. don’t take offense. Barnegat Light cherishes and protects its dunes. You may hear a little grumbling about the walk to the beach, but its Barnegat Light’s beautiful massive dunes that wrapped their arms around us and kept us safe from Sandy. Paths are clearly marked and beach mats make the trek easier. Barnegat Light also offers a tram ride (like a fun tractor hay ride- with no hay) between 4th and 9th street beaches during lifeguard hours. There is proof there is beauty in the mountains of sand as long as it stays put where it should be and not in our first floors. Barnegat Lights’

Berry Delightful

Beach Plum Jelly A Barnegat Light treasure, wild beach plum bushes grow close to sea level nestled in the dunes. About five feet high with jagged egg shaped leaves, they bear white blossoms in early May to June. If weather conditions permit, purple fruit berries are abundant in September. Beach plum jelly makers brave ticks, thorny bushes, and cranky property owners foraging for these tangy berries about the size of a marble. Hot spots are a deep dark secret as berries are scarce depending how the weather has influenced this temperamental and unreliable harvest. Come August you will hear “any berries this year?” As beach plum jelly is such a local prize many hope for every September.

beaches are “au natural” as we don’t rake our beaches, keeping the sea shells grasses and sea life at the high tide level which attracts many of the birds you see in this issue of Discover Barnegat Light. Every Fall Boy Scouts, school groups, Tax payer and community groups do dune grass plantings encouraging vegetation to build them. So as you get your workout walk to the water – stop and say thank you and appreciate this gift from mother nature – as we all know after Hurricane Sandy – she can giveth and taketh away………

1 1/2 gallons of fresh beach plums the goal is 4 cups pure strained juice 7 cups sugar 1 pkg certo pectin (sure gel) Combine washed berries and 1” of water in a large pot boil for 20 minutes Pour through jelly bag or metal sieve Combine 5 cups of this fruit juice, 7 cups of sugar and 1pkg of pectin Bring to a full rolling boil -- continue for a full minute Ladle into 1/2 pint sterilized jars - tighten lid and then unscrew 1/2 turn to allow air to escape If lid does not pop down -- refrigerate - in a few hours jars will fully cool and gel

Tip- put a few teaspoons in a microwavable bowl and zap it a few seconds - pour over vanilla ice cream -- Yum! Discover Barnegat Light Magazine

SINBAD, The well-traveled dog mascot of the Coast Guard cutter Campbell, had just returned from Japan bedecked with campaign bars and battle stars. His biography, “Sinbad of the Coast Guard,” was on the nation’s bookstands, and he was reveling in the fame which he so justly deserved. Sinbad had just completed a personal appearance tour which took him to New York City, Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago, and neighborhood cities too numerous to mention. Displaying all the boredom typical of human celebrity, however, Sinbad showed that he was tired of it all. After having presented with the “keys” to numerous cities, Sinbad made a stopover in Washington, D.C., both for rest and to see his former skipper, Captain Samuel F. Gray, at Headquarters. Ignoring all the attention being lavished upon him by a bevy of Spars, and forgetting all military courtesy temporarily, Sinbad closed his weary eyes, and fell asleep in the Captain’s Office. It was imperative that one hundred copies of Sinbad’s book be sent out that afternoon for distribution, and the Captain decided to have Sinbad “autograph” them. The one hundred books and an ink pad were set out on a table and Sinbad was called to do the honors. He refused to budge. He was tired after so many personal appearances, and was making no bones about it. Lifting Sinbad bodily, I placed him on the table alongside the books and the ink pad. While a Spar opened each book to the fly leaf, I lifted Sinbad’s right paw onto the ink pad one hundred times and impressed his “autograph” on as many books. Without once awakening, Sinbad autographed the entire one hundred books. -By Don Flamm

Finding the “We were on a quest to find the Barnegat Lightship. What we found surprised us all.” By the river, peeking through the trees, finally they saw the light. They ventured into Camden looking for the lightship. All that they knew was that it was near the Ben Franklin Bridge but not much else. Circling what seemed for hours, they were on the street where the lightship was supposed to be located but the ship was no where to be found.

At the end of the road the Delaware River flowed and looking over the trees, they spotted the top of the mast and the light of the lightship. Ah, they were near! A sign covered by leaves was nailed to a tree at the entrance of the dirt road. The scene drastically changed and the excitement grew. They left the city behind and entered a boaters paradise. The dirt road was lined with large, lush trees. The lot was lined with a marvelous history of antique boats. Just around the bend, the masts crowned with lights that once guided ships safely through Barnegat Inlet and the red bow of the Barnegat Lightship was visible.

Rodney Sadler smiled and welcomed the visitors that took such an interest in his lightship. Rodney is the current owner of the Barnegat Lightship. After the lightship was decommissioned on October 13, 1967 it was donated to Chesapeake Maritime Museum, St. Michaels, MD, where it remained there until the early 1970´s. Then it was sold to Heritage Ship Guild for floating display at Penns Landing, Philadelphia (PA). The group disbanded and transferred ownership to the present owner Mr. Rod Sadler who started a new group called Camden Museum and Learning Center. Mr. Sadler, owner of the Pyne Poynt Marine Services, wants to refurbish the ship and move it to the Camden waterfront. In 1980, Rodney S. Sadler founded his Marine Services in North Camden. In 1992, he was hired by Camden County to open and operate Wiggins Park Marina, where he is currently the harbourmaster. Sadler has volunteered his time as the President of Save Our Waterfront. Currently the lightship is on private property. No public viewing is allowed.

The ship sat 9 miles offshore and it replaced the fixed lighthouses in Barnegat Light and Amborose Lightship and Five Fathom Lightship and other places along the Jersey shore. The Coast Guard manned the ship. When the Lt. Ship was serviced a relief ship was sent to light the way. The lightships were replaced by buoys. The lighthouses, lightships and buoys were vital for navigation.
