Fun Facts about Old Barney • The site of Barnegat Lighthouse on the northern tip of Long Beach Island in Ocean County was regarded as one of the most crucial “change of course” points for coastal vessels. • There are 217 steps in the Lighthouse. • The Lighthouse is 172 feet above sea level.Approximately 500,000 people visit the Lighthouse annually. • Picnic tables are located along Barnegat Inlet where visitors can picnic, relax and observe the waterway. The “Story of Barnegat Lighthouse” is showcased in the newly renovated Interpretive Center at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park adjacent to the Lighthouse. The Interpretive Center depicts the history of Barnegat Lighthouse from shipwrecks to first class seacoast light. The park is open daily

Barnegat Lighthouse…Through the Years “Old Barney”, Barnegat Lighthouse is the second tallest lighthouse in the United States. 1824: It was originally

constructed in 1824 but by 1855 Barnegat Lighthouse had fallen into such a state of disrepair that replacement was essential. Lt. George G. Meade, a government engineer, was assigned to design a new lighthouse.

1857- 1859: The second

Barnegat Lighthouse was built and Old Barney was commissioned January 1, 1859.

1926: Barnegat Lighthouse was turned over to the state.

1927: It was decommissioned

1927. The original lens was removed and replaced by a lightship anchored off the coast of Barnegat Light. Down the road at the Barnegat Lighthouse Historical Society’s Museum, the original lens is still on display.

1957: The Lighthouse was dedicated as a state park.

1988: A $660,000 renovation

of the tower was undertaken including the addition of a new jetty at the base to help to prevent further erosion.

2009: On a cold January 1,

the beloved Lighthouse was illuminated again- exactly 150 years to the day that it was originally lit in 1859. Thousands of fans watched and cheered.

2014: Today, Barnegat

Lighthouse is shining again in all its proud glory. Friends of Barnegat Lighthouse, a nonprofit, dedicated to preserving and promoting the park, raised funds to purchase a new Coast Guardapproved lens. The new light creates a single beam that is visible up to 22 nautical miles.

Fishing Saltwater anglers have access to the bulkhead along the picnic area where they can catch striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, summer & winter flounder, and black sea bass. A 1,033’ concrete walkway with handrails on the south jetty provides fishing access. Picnic areas and walkway are accessible for people with disabilities

Maritime Forest Trail

One of the last remnants of maritime forest on Long Beach Island is found at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. Black Cherry, Sassafras, Eastern Red Cedar, and American Holly trees dominate the park. The forest is an important resting and feeding area for migratory birds on their long journey to and from their breeding sites. It is also an excellent area to observe many species of birds during the spring and fall migrations. A New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife program provides seasonal fencing of critical nesting areas on the beach adjacent to the park. Did you know that the Maritime Forest Trail has a 1/5-mile long, self-guided loop trail through this unique environment? Continued on page 6

Sailors’ Valentines

In the early nineteenth century, during the days of the magnificent sailing ships, it was customary for sailors to come home from their long voyages bearing gifts. These seashell creations were typically for wives, sweethearts, mothers and daughters who were at home praying for their safe return. Some were the handiwork of the sailors themselves, however the majority of surviving 19th century sailor’s valentines were made by craftsman of the British West Indies and sold to the sailors while in port. Home Improvement Contractor #13 VH00057300

Typically octagonal in shape to resemble a mariner’s compass, the valentines were displayed in wood boxes with hinged glass top lids ranging 8-15” in width. Intricate symmetrical designs of small shells, the patterns often featured a compass rose or heart design, or spelled out a sentimental message. Sailors Valentines today are rare collectibles (some have even been found to have old British West Indies newspaper for backing) and valued for their intricate mosaic beauty.

Pound Boat Fishing Photos by Margaret Thomas Buchholz Island Album, Down the Shore Publishing

Pound boat fisheries operated off the Ocean County shoreline between the 1850s and1950s. This type of fishing consisted of long, stationary poles that were pounded into the ocean floor about 2-3 miles off the beach. The fish would follow a long, straight row of poles lined with nets until they were “impounded” in the square pocket in the middle. This was called a weir. There is a detailed model of this trap in the Barnegat Light Museum on 5th St in Barnegat Light. Six to eight strong, husky men, mostly Scandinavian, launched wide-beamed 22 ft.wooden skiffs off the beach, then rowed out to the pound trap, where they hauled in the nets and scooped the fish into woven baskets. “We had what we called a bar pole, a pole sticking up outside the breakers, and we had a cable from there up to the beach. We rolled the boat on rollers down to the water and grabbed the cable and we pulled the boat off to the nets,” Chris Halversen remembered in an interview years ago. “The line stayed there all the time. We’d pick up the line when we came in and ride the breakers in. We picked a wave that we hoped 10 Summer 2014

Viking Village would land us up on the beach so we wouldn’t get too much water in the boat.” After they landed back on shore, horses, and later motor-driven tractors, towed the skiff up onto the beach again to unload. Fish were sorted and put in wooden boxes, iced over and sent by railroad to the big city markets. Bluefish were the most popular but striped bass and porgies were also caught. This was dangerous business but paid very well. After the 1944 hurricane, and postwar vacationers discovered the shore as a getaway, the pound boat industry faded away. The vicious nor’easter in November 1950 wiped out the last of the pounds and weirs.

The Statues of BarnEgat Light Brian Hanlon, is a classically trained sculptor whose career started in a dark and drafty chicken coop in Toms River, N.J. He specializes in bronze sculptures and has created over three hundred pieces found in parks, churches, universities, arenas and stadiums all over the world. Quoting from his website- hanlonsculpture.com, “I try to create a soul in the piece to create a spiritual connection with the people who live in the community. The story has to be great to be inspired.” Barnegat Light is home to two of his works, the Celebration to Commercial Fishing Statue at Viking Village, 19th and Bay Avenue, and The Fishermen’s Story Memorial Statue overlooking the Inlet at Lighthouse Park on the south side of Broadway. The Celebration Statue

20 Summer 2014 2013

at Viking Village is in recognition of the importance of Commercial Fishing to the history, growth and charm of Barnegat Light dating back to the late 1800’s. The sight of commercial fishing vessels transiting the inlet provides interest to residents and visitors unique to Barnegat Light. Proposed by Kathy Larson, daughter of Viking Village dock owner John Larson, it took several years of fund raising to complete. Paver bricks of contributing sponsors funded the statue as a community effort, dedicating it to the brave men and women who have fished from this port, raised families here and defined the character of this small fishing village. “It represents both the bounty of the sea and the

sacrifice of the work,” says Kathy Larson. Visit vikingvillage.net for more info on the commercial fishing village and industry. The Fishermen’s Story Statue at Lighthouse Park honors all those who lost their lives at sea pursuing one of our country’s most dangerous profession, commercial fishing. The statue serves as a place of remembrance for family and friends of Barnegat Light’s fishermen who over the years and also recently did not come home. The statue is placed where many wives, children and girlfriends wave good bye to their family members leaving for a fishing trip out the inlet. The Memorial was funded entirely through donations through the area’s many local businesses and donations of both part time and full-time residents, fundraisers and T shirt sales helped to make the

project a reality led mostly by the efforts of the Mears Family who lost Jim Mears tragically one January night in 2012 on the fishing vessel Mandy Ness. According to Beth Mears Schofield, Mears’ sister, “After the loss of Jim, we wanted to create a Memorial similar to the Gloucester, Ma., statue to recognize those lost fishing out of Barnegat Inlet. We hope to not make any more additions any time soon, but the statue is a reminder of the perils our men face each time heading out to sea. “Others names on the statue include Castor Svelling 1948, the Terri Lei Crew: Dennis Lyons, Adam Randall, and David Leite in 1993. For more on this story: fishermensmemorial.wordpress.com After visiting these monuments one can see the story, although sad, is great and the artist was inspired. Discover Barnegat Light Magazine

Chief Sinbad sculpted by Rita BrueStanziani was presented to the USCG Campbell in 1990. Rita Brue – Stanziani a noted and talented New York City artist became interested in the celebrated life and history of Mascot, Chief Sinbad and created two bronze sculptures. The sculptures were an exact likeness of Sinbad in Bronze, 16’’ High, 9 ¼’’ Wide, 15 ½’’ Long, and weighed 27lbs. One was placed atop Sinbad’s grave site in Barnegat Light in front of the US Coast Guard Station where it remained for several years. We have not been able to locate the second sculpture, but we would love to have it back in Barnegat Light. Although the grave site remains at the Coast Guard Station in Barnegat Light, one statue of Sinbad was moved and is now placed in the mess hall of the USCGC Campbell to protect the ship, which is located at the Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, NH. Chief Sinbad served in combat in World War II. The captain and crew believed that nothing bad could befall the ship if Sinbad was aboard. The legend that he brought good luck to the Coast Guard Crew and to the ship continues today. No one but Chiefs may touch Sinbad or the rawhide bone balanced on his nose, or else suffer bad luck! The current motto is “Sinbad Lives”. His legend lives on through books, videos, and more, which is available at Americana by the Seashore. Proceeds will be donated to help veterans cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Contributions will also go to Local Animal Shelters.

St Peter’s at the Light

Episcopal Church 1507 Central Avenue Barnegat Light, New Jersey

609-494-2752

Located on the scenic New Jersey shore, St. Peter’s-at-the-Light Episcopal Church is nestled on the northern tip of LBI in the quaint fishing borough of Barnegat Light, under the sweeping beam of the “Old Barney” Lighthouse. It was originally constructed at the behest of ship builder Benjamin Archer in 1890 as a chapel for visitors to the Oceanic Hotel. In 1937, the building was sold to the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey and designated a summer chapel.

St. Peter’s closed in 1946 for several years, but was reopened in 1955. By the late 1980’s services at St. Peter’s were conducted year round, and the church achieved Mission status in 1992. Construction of a Parish House at St. Peter’s was completed in 1992. With its large kitchen, meeting hall, modern restrooms, and office, this facility provides space to host meetings, classes, and community suppers. A magnificent triptych, depicting the life of St. Peter, graces the east wall behind the altar. Its panels, Threedimensional carvings and panels along with Renaissance-style paintings portray scenes in the life of St. Peter, interspersed with flora and fauna of Long Beach Island. The late Lewis Carr of Barnegat Light, a consummate artisan, created this exquisite work of art around 1957. He was commissioned by Diocesan Bishop Alfred Banyard to paint the triptych and execute its carvings for the reopening of St. Peter’s Church. Mr. Carr painted the sanctuary red to represent the throne of God, with a blue ceiling to represent Heaven, setting it apart from the Nave, which represents earth. The gold-stenciled designs of the cross and the keys to the Kingdom are symbols of St. Peter. The two side panels illustrate scenes from the life of St. Peter. The center panel features the Lord as Christ Triumphant ~ Christ the King. The Lord is garbed in a green chasuble, representing everlasting life, woven with a pomegranate design - a symbol of Resurrection; the red lining notes his sacrifice. In the Lord’s hand is the chalice and host, representing the Body and Blood. Surrounding the throne of God are four Archangels. Memorial Windows

361-CONE 607 Broadway, Barnegat Light The spectacularly beautiful glass memorial windows were installed in the 1970’s. The first was the St. Peter window, dedicated to the memory of Lewis Carr. Other windows quickly followed in memory of individuals and families who had worshipped there.

In addition to St. Peter, these gemlike windows portray the Virgin and Child, St. Cecilia, St. Francis, St. Dorothea, St. Andrew, and John the Apostle. Among the symbols they bear, many are associated with the Christian church, as well as with the New Jersey coast environment. Also adorning this historic and artistic edifice are many relief carved-oak furnishings, rich with religious symbols and a nautical flavor, by local artist Tom Martie.
