rom the moment you walk into Seawall ARTifacts, located in the Spray Beach neighborhood of LBI, you are taken on a journey under the sea as your body, mind and spirit take in the beauty of “Nature Behind Glass.” Seawall ARTifacts is a gallery of original shadowbox artwork and custom mirrors which showcase the beauty of various seashells and sea life. From a simple array of white starfish, sand dollars and purple clam shells to the delicate pink sea urchin, sea fan and Nautilus shell, Seawall ARTifacts has something for everyone. Owner and artist, Steve Fritz, has been inspired by what he calls “the beauty and simplicity of found items in nature.” With this inspiration, he has created a collection of original pieces that engulf the true essence of what draws us to nature. Since creating his first 2

piece 3 years ago, Steve has sold his collection across the United States, Canada and throughout the Caribbean. Each piece is handcrafted by Steve from beginning to end and is unique in its own way, just as each shell is. In addition to the artwork collection, Seawall ARTifacts offers a variety of Artisan and sea glass jewelry, tabletop items and loose seashells of various non-endangered species. Also featured in the gallery are limited edition maps of Long Beach Island that are sure to add something special to any space in your home. Custom sea-life art pieces are available upon request. If you are looking for something extraordinary to add to your home or office, you need a beautiful memory of your time on Long Beach Island or just need a tranquil place to appreciate the beauty of what nature beholds, Seawall ARTifacts has something for everyone.

Goddess of poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, weaving, crafts, magic, and music. Barnegat Light's newest Bed and Breakfast

Give the gift of a seaside stay to someone you love (or yourself!) Named for a beloved matriarch of their family, who loved LBI, Minerva’s by the Sea is owned and operated by FourLaps, LLC, a family business composed of retired college professor Emma Lapsansky and her three children (hence Four Laps), who have lived in many places around the world, and have more than a decade of experience in the B & B business. But the name Minerva has more than just familial meaning. Minerva was a mythical ancient Roman goddess. Because her specialties include wisdom and trade, she is often used as a ship’s masthead. Granddaughter of Oceanus—(born of the sea)—and daughter of the powerful Jupiter, Minerva was also the goddess of medicine and healing, and of crafts, poetry and music. For many decades, Barnegat Light, supplier to fish-lovers all over the world, has also been a favorite haunt of various crafts-people, writers, and musicians. Minerva’s by the Sea—Barnegat Light’s newest bed and breakfast—is an office building, built in 2003 and magically-transformed in 2007 to an enticing B and B featuring “you”-centered hospitality, (it’s all about you—the guests!) healthy gourmet breakfasts and the works of local artists on the walls—and of course easy access to the healing qualities of the sea! Located at the northern tip of Long Beach Island, in the shadow of Old Barney, one of New Jersey’s most beloved lighthouses, Minerva’s is near the clean, expansive, often uncrowded beaches of this beautiful, surprisingly unspoiled barrier island, and close to tasteful shopping areas and a variety of restaurants. Call us for reservations or gift certificates.

e at ADMS offer you many services to help you make the right decisions. We can help you with changes, large, small and in-between. Many times it is simply painting, adding, wall art and accessories that can make a room “pop”. Sometimes it may mean upgrading appliances which are not only old but are not energy-efficient. Flat-screen TVs are almost a “must” in today’s market as are other entertainment amenities. Our design team can help not only with the changes but also with great price advantages through our connection with many diverse suppliers. Once the hectic summer season ends our thoughts turn to a restful fall and winter to recoup our energy. Unfortunately this time of changes does not last as long as we would like. We begin thinking of next spring and yet another busy summer rental season. This is the perfect time to evaluate the past season and asses the good points and perhaps the difficult

This is the time to do something positive to make your rental home the best investment it can be. one and see how next summer can be better and more financially successful. The relatively quiet winter season also allows us to decide on those changes we know should be made and which we have put off far too long. Questions like “what will make my property more attractive to renters?” or “what must I do to improve the quality of my home so that it attracts a larger cross-section of quality potential renters?” or “what problem or issues must I absolutely resolve to correct right now?” Needless to say there could be many more things to consider. For example, we do not know what the market will be like by next summer considering the still somewhat precarious position of the economy. A newly upgraded property always has more potential to attract a quality tenant for a premium competi-

tive rate. Let Accent Design help you make the best choices for the design of your investment property. Once your "new" home is ready for rent ADMS will stage your home for beautiful photos and a video to be placed on our website for tenants to view. We pride ourselves with almost immediate response emails and follow through all phases of the rental until your renters depart your home.

We are in touch with your tenants to make sure that everything is the way it should be while they are in your home and follow up with them for a guest review. We can provide cleaning, concierge, and management services as well. Let ADMS’s professional staff manage the responsibility of renting your home so you can relax and enjoy your summer. im De Francesco named the business for a coin in circulation in Bermuda, to which he has traveled frequently. Services include repairing old film, transfering VHS to DVD and transfering home movies to VHS or DVD, among other work. It's been more than 30 years since Jim De Francesco started his Hogpenny Studios on Long Beach Island, and, according to him, business has never been better. De Francesco, a 64-year-old ex-Philadelphian who purchased his small Ship Bottom house with his wife in the mid-1970s, has undertaken many projects, from producing documentaries about the island's history to filming local government meetings to shooting wedding videos. But in recent years, De Francesco said his business has found its niche, focusing on transferring old home movies from film to VHS or DVD. The service is popular mainly among two groups of people, according to De Francesco. One group is senior citizens who want a way to watch their old films. The other, he said, is younger people who find home movies their parents or grandparents shot in the 1940s or 1950s and want to preserve them for the sake of family history and because they make good gifts. "When they do the home-movie transfer, they become the hero of the family," De Francesco said. "And more than a few have said, "It sure beats the sweater from Macy's.' " De Francesco said rates range from $15 and up, depending on the service, size of the film and other factors. He declined to discuss revenue, but did say it has grown substantially in recent years. "Over the last two years, it's quintupled," he said. During his three decades in Ship Bottom, De Francesco has become a well-known figure on Long Beach Island and one with a reputation of community involvement. In addition to his business, he's a part-time print journalist, writing features for southern Ocean County publications. His resume is a diverse one, including a lengthy career as a public affairs officer with the Defense Department and work in radio and in television, but he's also involved in the arts locally. Family members describe him as a man whose interests are wide-ranging. "He's always into exploring new things and sharing with others," said his daughter, Danielle De Francesco, 29, who lives in Baltimore. "Whatever he finds, he always wants to share with everyone."

Wishbook 2010

Barrier islands are constantly changing. They are influenced by the following conditions: • Waves - Waves continually deposit and remove sediments from the ocean side of the island. • Currents - Longshore currents that are caused by waves hitting the island at an angle can move the sand from one end of the island to another. For example, the offshore currents along the east coast of the United States tend to remove sand from the northern ends of barrier islands and deposit it at the southern ends. • Tides - The tides move sediments into the salt marshes and eventually fill them in. Thus, the sound sides of barrier islands tend to build up as the ocean sides erode. • Winds - Winds blow sediments from the beaches to help form dunes and into the marshes, which contributes to their build-up. • Sea level changes - Rising sea levels tend to push barrier islands toward the mainland. • Storms - Hurricanes and other storms have the most dramatic effects on barrier islands by creating overwash areas and eroding beaches as well as other portions of barrier islands.

Winter on LBI

L

ast Winter was a snowy wonderland on LBI. What fun it was to walk down snowy streets. The cold wind whipped and snow drifts covered our cars. Up at the beach, it was hard to see because the wind blew the sand into our faces. Watching the angry ocean was both exciting and scary. Huge, powerful waves pounded the beach. Helplessly we watched the waves carry sand out to sea. The dunes did their job and held the ocean back. Will this year be the same? We can only hope. The snow was exciting and the winter flew by. I'm not a fan of the cold, but the snow was beautiful. Down by the bay, the shallow water froze. Sunsets were gorgeous as they reflected off the icy water. -Lisa Ball

Christmas Time Is Here From The Charlie Brown Christmas Special Christmas time is here, happiness and cheer, fun for all that children call their favorite time of year. Snowflakes in the air, carols everywhere, Since the 1930s, the toy that meant Christmas to young boys and girls olden times and ancient was the trains that chugged around the circle of track under the Christrhymes mas tree. Even today, when most children have never been on a train, and love and dreams to share. the toy still ranks among the 10 most-asked-for Christmas gifts. Sleigh bells in the air; beauty every where; yuletide by the fireside and joyful memories there. Christmas time is here; we'll be drawing near; oh that we could always see such spirit through the year, such spirit through the year.

Timeless Toys

An Early Start

S Remember playing? Recently I was shopping in a local toy store and memories came flooding back. I flashed back to building my dream home with Lincoln Logs while Gumby rode up on the back of Pokey. We still play, but as an adult we call it day-dreaming. Playing taught us to day-dream. We baked in our Easy Bake Ovens and had a tea parties with stuffed animals. Now we day-dream about our daughter’s wedding. We’re just “playing” as we plan the menu and browse through wedding magazines. Even a simple toy like a slinky, taught us to dream. Placing the coiled metal at the perfect spot caused it to slink down the stairs. It was just practice for college science. Turning the dials on an Etch A Sketch prepared us for video games. Remember “Pong”? Toys are a valuable tool for learning to day-dream. The stronger our dreams, the harder we work to realize them. I just wonder if Mr Potato Head was preparing me for the man of my dreams?

eptember, October, November are very busy shopping months. School supplies, new clothes, Halloween candy, Thanksgiving turkey all are practice shopping for the final exam.....the holidays. Every year I tell myself that I will get an early start. But, life always gets in the way. There is always something. This year I will not make any excuses. I’ll start in September and by the end of October, I‘ll have everything wrapped and ready to go. Last Christmas eve, I needed one last gift. Tired, hungry and grouchy, I stopped in a little shop on LBI. The shop owner welcomed me with cookies. Her warm friendly smile, instantly changed my mood. I took a deep breath and wondered if I had traveled back in time. The shop was filled with lovely items. It was difficult to decide between the hand painted mermaid dish or the gorgeous necklace. “Would you like me to wrap it?” She asked. “Wrap it?” It was music to my ears. “Yes, please”. Why didn’t I start my shopping on the island? I could have saved myself time and energy. Great gifts, no crowds, friendly service and free gift wrapping! I knew at that moment that I would start shopping early and never leave the island. Yes, this year I’ll start early.

"The first year we had 25 entries with about 57 scarecrows" states Lori Pepenella Destination Marketing Director "Last year we had 61 entries with well over 100 scarecrows, creating the largest scarecrow contest on the Jersey Shore ." The Chamber notes that participating in the Decorated Scarecrow Contest is probably the most unique form of promotion that can be done for a business or group, especially this year with the online voting component that put members in front of thousands potential customers. This year, scarecrow entries have already started coming into the Chamber. “We are anticipating another great turn out this year,” says Lori Pepenella, Destination Marketing Director. "Everyone loved these scarecrows last fall, the creativity is something that makes our area stand out ." Businesses and groups are invited to create a scarecrow that best interprets their business. The Chamber will list each scarecrow location on its Scarecrow Row Flyer which is distributed during Chowderfest Weekend, as well as online and at the visitor center for the rest of the month. Anyone choosing to take part in picking this year’s winner will be asked to register their vote at www.visitLBIregion.com. Scarecrow entrants are encouraged to further promote their business and their scarecrow by reaching out their email list or adding the link to other customer communications. The scarecrows will not only be displayed beginning October 2, but a digital photo they

send to the chamber will be uploaded and the Scarecrow Row Gallery will go live online. Voting will take place online at www.visitLBIregion. com from October 2 to October 17 with a popular vote winner in the business and non profit category. Last year the public embraced the contest, calling into the chamber office if internet was not available to them. Over 840 votes were tallied; the top scarecrow display to take the Business Category is Sea Crest Village in Little Egg Harbor. With the most individual votes, came in on top with their multi scarecrow display of joy riders depicting happy residents in the nursing facility. Last year, they took first place honors with their Nurse and well chair patient scarecrows. The top Non Profit Organization is the Pine Shores Art Association in Manahawkin with their life like Norma Rockwell. The scarecrow

Feather Christmas Trees First created in Germany during the late 1800's, the feather tree was the first artificial tree designed with the intention of conserving forest land. These tabletop trees were brought to America by German immigrants and also produced to sale in the dime stores during the 1920s and '30s. Made of mostly goose feathers, but sometimes turkey feathers, the branches had a berry tip and feathers wrapped around wires to create the bottle brush style branches. As a cottage industry, bases varied some round, others wooden. Iron bases were created to accompany these trees and the most elaborate were the musical bases that rotated the trees.

While composition berries are found on most of the antique trees, occasionally you can find one with candle clips on the tips and even more unusual, electrified ones with a light bulb at the tip of each branch. Prices for antique feather trees fall into the $100/foot range. Inspect for damage. Some damaged trees can be repaired, but I've seen some with feathers too brittle to do anything with except leave them alone and love them as they are. Dennis Bauer of Hometraditions specializes in feather tree repair. Feather trees are wonderful to decorate. There is plenty of room between the branches for ornaments and garland to hang from. I've seen feather trees for doll houses at 3 inches high. Hometraditions carries them from 9 inches up to 7 feet. They come in many colors and can be customized; width, height, number of rows and colors, even two-toned color combinations. Feather trees can be used for all seasons; white, ivory and pale green are the colors most adapted to every season, pink, lavender, yellow and pale green for spring, and black and orange for fall/Halloween. All of the colors work for Christmas depending on your theme and ornaments. By far, the most popular color is dark green. Feather trees can look historical or contemporary. Feather trees can be purchased through www.hometraditions.com. For those interested in antique

Christmas collecting, the Golden Glow of Christmas Past is an organization of pre-1966 Christmas collectors. Their website is www.goldenglow.org Feather trees should be stored in a closet or climate controlled location, never in a basement or attic. Heat will burst the berries, and dampness will damage the tree. Cover with a pillow case or paper bag and include cedar blocks (to repel moths), rather than storing in an airtight container. Display in indirect sunlight, so not to fade the paper wrapping on the trunk. With proper care, your feather tree will last for years and years. One more note about storing your trees - I do not fold my feather tree's branches up when I store them. I keep them open - the branches are made of wire, so repeated bending and unbending will eventually weaken the wires.

SEAGATE HOUSE is a riveting tale of family lineage, filled with passion, intrigue, mystery and adventure. Ella treasures her childhood summers at her ancestral home, on the shores of Long Beach Island, a beautiful barrier island off the New Jersey coast. On a moonless night, nine year old Ella experiences a terrifying incident at Seagate. Being an imaginative, precocious child, she will continue her search for the meaning of that night, wondering if the generations old ancestor journals can unveil any connection to that happening. Accounts are written of the oppressive European times the ancestors left behind and their brave voyages across an unforgiving ocean to the New World. Ella reads of the cautious Dutchman and the determined Spanish Captains and their dangerous involvement in the Revolutionary War, their relationship with the local Indians and the challenges they faced on an island inhabited only by the early whalers. Through the written pages of long ago, tales are revealed of her ancestors’ treks along old Indian trails inland to Manahawkin and Batsto, then into Bucks County, Pennsylvania and Trenton, New Jersey where Washington is busy routing the Hessians. Sail vicariously with Ella’s ancestors to the Amsterdam Port on Manhattan Island─then continue north to Boston, a hotbed of the 40

Revolutionary War. Turn south and navigate through hazardous ocean waters, rife with pirates while following the trail of the explorers, Mey and Hudson. Come back to the present and the descendants’ reunion, where the surprising truth of Ella’s black night is finally uncovered. At the same time, a long hidden reality comes to light, shocking the entire family. Unravel the mystery as Seagate House presents a family saga like no other, that will capture the reader’s attention and will be remembered long after. About the Author

For (the sake of) old times

Robert Burns Version

English Translation Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgot, and old lang syne?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne? CHORUS: For auld lang syne, my jo, for auld lang syne, we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.

CHORUS: For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we'll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp ! and surely I’ll be mine! And we’ll tak a cup o’kindness yet, for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup! and surely I’ll buy mine! And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne. CHORUS

CHORUS

We two have run about the slopes, and picked the daisies fine; But we’ve wandered many a weary foot, since auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes, and pu’d the gowans fine; But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit, sin auld lang syne.

We two have paddled in the stream, from morning sun till dine; But seas between us broad have roared since auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere! and gie's a hand o’ thine! And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught, for auld lang syne.
