To: lisa@LivingLBI.com Sent: Sunday, July 21, 2013 7:14 PM Subject: Post Card from the Past Dear Lisa, "Post Card from the Past" brought back so many wonderful memories for us here at the Murphy house. In fact, Ocean View Court was our first vacation on LBI. We usually went camping or did our day trips to the Island. My husband had a boat that he docked at Garabos Marina in Holgate. Both of us, as small children, used to go to the island for day trips with our families. Of course we didn't know it then, as we lived 5 miles, different towns from each other. The island always lured us to its beaches and the bay. 1984 was the year that began our true love of LBI. Ocean View Court as you know, were one bedroom efficiencies. A co-worker of my husband and friend, had recently bought the motel. He offered us a very good rate for two weeks at the motel. My three children bunked in the bedroom while my husband and I slept on the sofa bed. My youngest at the time, was just 2 years old, didn't care for showers, so we bathed her in the kitchen sink. What memories we had of that motel! I didn't know the previous owners before we stayed there but that year was the beginning for us. Your article has brought back so many memories for us. After seeing the article I had to call my children and tell them, my two oldest remembered being there. We have so many memories of the Island and finally settled on renting in Ship Bottom. In fact we have been using Mary Allen Realty for years for our rentals, John and Linda Belitz always took care of us. This year we were unable to rent, but will be staying at my cousins home in September in Brant Beach for a week. As you and everyone who loves the Island knows, it is a piece of Heaven. Thank you for publishing the article in Living LBI! I look forward to each new publication when we visit the Island, which is often. Sincerely, Mary Jane Murphy Cinnaminson, NJ

It’s Firefly Season!

riving down River Road at night, it’s clear that summer has arrived in full force. The air is hot and humid, the insects and toads are calling at full volume, and the trees are full of tiny flashing lights- it’s firefly season! After up to two years spent underground in their carnivorous larval stage, they emerge in early to midMay to glow and develop into pupae, then fully-grown adults! Once they develop into adults, they can be seen searching for a mate via their distinctive flashes. Though fireflies can be found all over the world, in North America they’re almost never seen west of the Rockies. This surprises many who grew up on the east coast, to whom the little critters are synonymous with summer nights. We can also be surprised by the sheer number of names given to fireflies- Lightning Bugs and Fireflies seem to be interchangeable, but glow-worm can alternately refer to the glowing larvae, or certain species of wingless female fireflies. It’s hard to keep them all straight! Despite being nearly ubiquitous on the east coast, most people are completely oblivious to the lives of the fireflies in their yard. For example, I had no idea that New Jersey is actually host to several different kinds of fireflies, each with their own unique flash pattern. I also had no idea that adult fireflies only live for a few weeks, making it all the more important that kids and adults handle them with care and make sure to release them after admiring their flashing lights. As New Jersey becomes ever more densely populated, the local firefly populations have begun to dwindle as they have in many parts of the world. Nobody’s entirely sure why this is, but researchers at Boston’s Museum of Science have some ideas. They suggest that the use of certain pesticides, as well light pollution and decreasing open space can impact firefly larvae, as well as adult fireflies, and harm the population. To get involved with their efforts to track firefly populations, and learn more about these little beetles, visit the Firefly Watch homepage on the Museum of Science website-

Fireflies Manëtu is an impish spirit who lives in a discarded milk bottle at the bottom of Barnegat Bay. Several centuries ago a Lenape Indian medicine man brought Manëtu into his world to provide some enjoyment to Indian children who had a very hard life. Manëtu, being composed of pure energy, was invisible except for a tiny bluish-green flicker of light that was easy to see in darkness. He could, however, take many physical forms. Soon the children named him Manëtu, the Indian word for “spirit,” and they played with him all day long. Manëtu became famous for the tricks he constantly played on the Indian children. Eventually, the mothers complained to the medicine man that the children were not seeing to their chores and were not learning the skills they would need to survive in those very harsh times. Sadly, the medicine man realized that Manëtu had to go, so he sealed him in a magic oyster shell that he threw into Barnegat Bay. The shell became buried in the sand, and centuries passed before it disintegrated and Manëtu was released into the 21st century. Manëtu quickly learned about modern times and used the milk bottle he had found on the bay floor to rest and provide a place of solitude. During summers he emerged to play tricks on the children who vacationed on Long Beach Island. It was getting late one evening in July, and many of the children had retired to their homes. Manëtu was feeling very lonely. Then, as he flew above Barnegat Bay, he noticed miniature flashes of light coming from the shore of the Mainland. Flying closer to explore them, a rush of excitement overcame him! Could it be that these were creatures just like himself? It would be wonderful to have playmates of his own kind who could engage in far more diverse activities than the children he loved.
Because he could fly at the speed of light when he wanted to, it was only an instant before he was among them. The flashing yellow-green lights were all about him, but they suddenly seemed to stop when they noticed his bluish-green blinking. They obviously were very afraid. Manëtu immediately realized that these creatures were not like him, even though they had flashing lights. So he approached one of them who was very apprehensive. “Who are you,” Manëtu asked. “I am a firefly,” came the timid response. “Who are You?”
him, attempting to bite him. But to their astonishment, there was nothing to him except “flash.” They were unable to bite him, but still they persisted. Manëtu finally had enough of this and summoned what, for him, was a small burst of energy. When this energy was emitted, it stunned all predators in what must have been the area of a football field. They fell to the ground appearing lifeless. But in a minute or two, they slowly began to twitch, then move their wings and legs, and soon they were able to fly again. They did not remain for long, however, and fled in panic in the direction from which they had come. They certainly would not be back for some time to come.
“My name is Manëtu, and I am a spirit composed of energy. That's why I flash like you do. I do not mean you any harm.”
Manetu's friends who had fled saw what had happened. They could hardly believe their eyes, and one-by-one, they returned hesitantly to where Manëtu fluttered in space. “How did you do that?” one of the fireflies asked.
Slowly the other fireflies gathered around Manëtu, and their flashing returned to its normal pattern.
“It's just something I am able to do,” Manëtu replied. “I didn't want to hurt them.”
“We thought you were one of the predators, a species of fireflies that is carnivorous. We are peaceful and eat only pollen and the nectar of plants. If we are not careful, the predators will attack and eat us.”
The fireflies clamored around Manëtu and asked if he would live with them. Manëtu told them that he would visit them from time to time, but that his destiny was to play with children, and so he must return to Long Beach Island. Thus, with sorrow they parted, and they watched as Manëtu's flashing light slowly disappeared over Barnegat Bay.
Manëtu listened to this story very carefully, and he understood why his appearance had frightened them so. All his life he had done nothing but play with children. At worst, he once had to prevent a mean cat from catching a squirrel. But this was different. This was a life-or-death matter for those he hoped would be new-found friends. “Where do these predators live?” he asked. “They live on the other side of the bog. They will soon be awake and come looking for us.” Manëtu then asked, “How can I help?” The fireflies replied, almost in unison, “You can't. When you see us fly away, this means the predators have been sighted, and you must also try to escape as fast as possible.” Manëtu considered this for a moment, and realizing his vast powers, he was certain he could be of assistance to these peaceful fireflies. He was about to say something, when a number of fireflies shouted, “Flee!”
(Volume 1 of Manëtu's story can be ordered by completing the Order Form contained in this issue. Volume 2, a complete saga of Manëtu's exploits among the fireflies, will be available for order soon.)

Sea Sirens: The End of a New Beginning It is very early morning. Like countless times before, I stand up against a strong wet breeze with my toes hidden in the cold gritty sand. My only companionship at the moment is the predictable rhythm of waves, which collapse with a noisy splash again and again on a beach surrounded by a silent fog. Although I have seen a horizon as wide as one’s hope through my summer stay, right now it is as invisible as any lost soul. I am reminded, anew, of how anyone begins again after losing all. The wet white cloud that clings to my face will lift. The exuberant dance of diamonds on the ocean during many a summer morning on Long Beach Island will return. Without me. Today, I must say “goodbye” to a place I have been growing to know, anew. Right now, even though only my ears believe the sea exists, my tan and sun-bleached hair prove that a summer sun remembered to return.
The Sea Siren of Beginnings is beside me as I venture towards Fantasy Island one final time before I leave. I am glad it is still early in the day. Soon, the sounds of children, hopeful children, will squeal with delight and will enjoy ice cream and taffy, as if all is exactly as they remember. I glance once more at the gazebo that is, no longer. The one where a wreath would hang each winter, and my husband and I would patiently wait for our son to complete his weekend seven-mile runs from Ship Bottom while preparing for the New York City marathon several years ago, before terror and trauma invaded the iconic event, wherever it takes place. The cyclone fence by the bay at the St. Francis community Center lay beaten down through the winter. But the statue, resolutely in the same place, reminded us throughout the dark, the windy, the cold--that we can still be an instrument of his peace.
Oh, how thankful I am that familiar stores and restaurants reopened. How grateful I have been that some new ones replaced those that did not. I am revitalized for my own journey home and forward, which promises to be a trail, not yet blazed, as I navigate the next season.
Wishing us all a safe ride home. I’ll keep my eyes straight ahead, as I pass the memory of the shack on my left this time, with a winter’s worth of new memories to warm my soul. Until we meet, again, on your island, our island, LBI. Written by Judy Horowitz www.senoraonline.com

16 LivingLBI April 2013
After graduating with the first class of Pennsauken High School Rudy retired from professional music and enrolled at the Temple University School of Pharmacy. He completed his studies in 1967 and was drafted and served at the Ireland Army Hospital in Ft. Knox, Kentucky. While in Kentucky he met his beloved Judy Jobe. She traveled the world painting “en plein air” but her favorite paintings are her prints done from at Vangoghagain Printers are usually from the tri-state area.
Bookends by PJ Teller
For me the beach is always a time for regeneration - feeling young again through relaxation and simple enjoyment of the day - so I did the whole series “Beach Play of kids loving the beach. I watched my kids grow up on the beach with a yearly weekly rental in different towns getting to know different places. But capturing different moments of fun in the form of art for the walls for me brings our vacations home with us year round. The originals of Bookends and The Perfect Cartwheel were bought by families who were looking to do the same thing, bring the vacation home, so I got prints made for anyone else who has watched their kids in the surf each summer. The original of Universal Laughter is still available. And also the fact that I am very thankful to Valerie for discovering my work and including it in her artistic niche!!! LivingLBI.com 21

The Diamondback Terrapin is a medium
sized, coast hugging turtle found in the brackish bay waters along the coasts of eastern and southern North America, from Cape Cod to the Gulf of Mexico. “Terrapin” means “edible” and they’ve been bouncing on and off the watch list since the early 1900’s. On Long Beach Island’s North end, a huge population is on the verge of being wiped out. Their habitats are disappearing, their numbers declining. Within the very near future there will be no new juveniles to replace the aging females. I started the Terrapin Nesting Project in June of 2011, with no funding, very little time for planning and a month of precious nesting season already lost. What we had was a goal that touched the hearts of everyone we spoke to: protect the nesting female terrapins, their eggs and their hatchling. To accomplish this, we would have to relocate nests laid in unsuitable areas to a protected hatchery on the bay beach at the end of Sunset Blvd. in High Bar Harbor. A better location I couldn’t have chosen, for this is where I met Grace. Grace aka the “Turtle Girl” was six years old when I stumbled onto her parents bay property. With the natural instincts of a “Terrapin Tracker” and a healthy dose of turtle DNA, she joined me as I shadowed a female terrapin on her quest to find the perfect nesting site. Grace has been my intern ever since. I thought she was older, not based on her physical size, but on her patience, insight, understand-
and the “Terrapin Nesting Project” ing and focus. We make a wonderful team. Grace and her parents became my first volunteers. The community, local businesses and vacationers embraced the project. ‘Terrapin Awareness’ signs were posted in local businesses. Volunteers joined the cause. There wouldn’t be a terrapin project without their support. I have never worked with so many incredible devoted, enthusiastic people. Our ‘Pilot Year’ was a huge success! We were able to successfully relocate, incubate, hatch and release more than 200 new hatchlings into the bay in Barnegat Light by September of 2011. An amazing 91% success rate! Children, parents and grandparents helped release the hatchlings into the bay in Barnegat Light. The first in over two dozen years!! The project is in its infancy. For this to be considered a success it must continue to grow. Last year with a grant from The Sierra Club, we expanded the project, community awareness, added to our volunteer base and began working with homeowners to protect nests laid in suitable areas on their properties. A volunteer built 2 10’ x 10’ hatcheries to accommodate the relocated nests. Thanks to the generosity of the Garden Club of Long Beach Island,
Eggs are planted inside these corrals. The number in the clam are ide “Turtles Crossing” signs were placed along the bay roads to alert traffic about the terrapins. We also added an educational outreach program. Grace, her mom Tracey and I took turns at the hatchery ‘talking terrapin’. Teaching about terrapins opens the door to nature and its environmental issues: habitat loss, litter, the effects of plastic on wildlife, the havoc balloons and straws wreck on the environment. Awareness is vital. By season’s end we released over 1,000 terrapin hatchlings, a 93% success rate. We are now in our third year of the project. We received additional donations from the Garden Club and the Taxpayer’s Association of High Bar Harbor. Our goals have broadened to “Research and Educate”. Our long term goal is to ‘restore the balance’, leaving ‘natural nests’ when possible. We’ll still relocate nests when necessary to insure the population remains stable. Education is the key to saving a species. Grace has shared her knowledge with her school on several occasions, presenting programs to her classmates throughout the school year. She will continue to be a major force in the “Terrapin Nesting Project’s Education Program” as we expand the program to include local elementary schools. We believe if you teach the children, they will educate their peers and their parents. The Sierra Club so strongly believes in our cause, they are presenting the “Terrapin Nesting Project” with an award for “Outstanding Achievement” at a ceremony this September in San Francisco, California. I couldn’t be more proud of our Island and its residents. Stay tuned for “The Release”. We have over 1,400 eggs incubating in the hatchery! Visit us on Facebook @ Terrapin Nesting Project - HBH Hatchery for details!! Kathy Lacey/Terrapin Nesting Project Terrapin Nesting Project is a N.J. What is ReClam The Bay Up to in 2013? Clam Shuck’en, Passport to LBI, Spanish translation!
Our mission is to involve and educate the public about the estuary’s water quality and the importance of shellfish. We believe that by involving the public in the care, feeding, and life cycles of the shellfish they will better understand what an integral role shellfish have in our lives. ReClam the Bay uses the hard clam and oyster as living representatives of the bay ecosystem that includes the coastal bay and its watersheds. We educate people about the requirements of shellfish that serve as watchdogs for good water quality. Finally we explain the impact of people on these natural resources and that people must be stewards of the natural resources that we share. Some new stuff: Helping our bay men by explaining that the shellfish are healthy and healthy for you as ever. RCTB, with a donation of 750 middle neck clams from McCarthy Wholesale Clams, served them up at the raw bar at the Long Bach Township Thank You Fest on June15, 2013. The folks loved them…And for many of the people, like the interns from Alliance for a living Ocean, it was the first time they ever ate a raw clam!
A
s many know ReClam the Bay is a local non-profit environmental organization that promotes environmental involvement and education in a constructive and helpful way. Together we grow and maintain millions of baby clams and oysters. As we grow seed clams and oysters to stock our local bay we teach everyone how important and fragile the shellfish population and our environment really is.
Part of what we help people to understand is that everything is connected. Participating in Passport to LBI is one way to explain it. The air is connected to the bay through the rain and the water that runs down the streams and our culture is linked to nature through art. And we are all connected through our language. This year the Interpretive Center at the LBI Foundation, 120 Long Beach Blvd. Loveladies, offer Spanish translation. Weddings Marc and I met on match.com. Living over an hour apart and dating was rough with 3 children between the two of us so after 6 months we decided it was time to move in together. When we got engaged, we wanted to have a small, intimate wedding, near our home. We live in Bedminster NJ and I had lots of friends that went to LBI for their summer vacations. I started looking online and reading about weddings in LBI. I was instantly hooked and decided this was where we wanted to have our family gather. I found the Wed and Bed and it looked perfect for us, our children, and our parents. I sent an email to my siblings asking them to look into renting houses nearby and explained that next summer we would be having a beach ceremony, just the family. A few weeks later we decided to head out and see the neighborhood. We were excited to be having our wedding on the shore at a time when we knew local businesses needed to get back up and running and business was slow. When we stood on the beach by the Wed and Bed, we felt it was just perfect. The beach was small and intimate, steps from the house, just like the ceremony we envisioned. And, like our vision, our ceremony was beautiful. Simple, powerful, and moving. With just our immediate family surrounding us. Everyone had found local accommodations and we had a 3 day weekend, including Friday night dinner on the marina, Saturday cocktails, ceremony and dinner (followed by some dancing in the living room!) and Sunday brunch at the house. We couldn’t have been happier with our special event and our family was so happy to be part of it.

Weddings are all about sharing the Love! And many want to share their love of LBI with their guests as well. Destination Weddings are in full fashion nowadays and also a great way to concentrate on what is important. Cut the invite list, and focus on your family and closest friends. A destination wedding can double as a mini reunion. Hanging out with cousins again or reliving childhood memories for a couple of days is like music for the soul. Time is precious and times with our closest ties are far and few in adulthood. At “The Wed and Bed” we know how much family and friends mean to the wedding couple and can plan your beautiful stay on LBI accordingly. A Destination Wedding is an easy way to show your love. The Wed and Bed sleeps 16, is 3rd from the beach with amazing views and has all the amenities of home and then some. The 5 bedroom home has a living room on the first and second floor, as well as an outdoor living area on the 4th floor rooftop deck. The back yard is perfect for a BBQ and catching up with everyone. Having a large home for the wedding family or wedding party to stay at as a group adds to the fun of a destination wedding. While staying at The Wed and Bed everyone will have a chance to get to know each other better and have some quality down time when incorporating it into a minimoon /vacation.
