Turramurra North Real Estate
a secret no longer
At this time of year we see new life surrounding us with lush vegetation flowing through our parks and gardens. We are well aware of the benefits of living in the upper north shore and it appears that this is no longer a well kept secret. In recent years we have noticed that many of our buyers grew up within the area and are now wishing to return with families of their own. However, a large percentage of buyers have only recently discovered the advantages of the upper north shore in comparison with other parts of Sydney.
We tailor individual strategies for each and every vendor At Turramurra North Real Estate (TNRE), buyers continue to visit our office hoping to be able to find the home of their dreams, or an investment for the future, resulting in a long list of prospective buyers held in our database. We ensure regular contact is maintained between our office and these buyers, and our personal approach often results in a great sale in a short period of time.
Why choose Turramurra North Real Estate? • We believe every vendor and property is unique • No “one size fits all” marketing strategy • Personalised service with a tailored approach for each property whether marketed by auction or private treaty • We work closely with you to ensure complete customer satisfaction • TNRE principal Julie Rodgers has 20+yrs property sales experience in the area • All staff are local We understand that selling your home can be an overwhelming process, therefore here at Turramurra North Real Estate we ensure that you benefit from our experience enabling you to achieve your desired result. For an obligation free appraisal, please contact Julie Rodgers on 9449 3075 or 0418 606 006.

Meet the new owner of Eastern Road Quality Meats Hello and welcome to our first edition of our new chapter in Living Local.
itself on ethically-raised quality produce, exceptional customer service (a priority for me too) and it is situated in a supportive, friendly community. Eastern Road Quality Meats is backed by very passionate staff who are all staying on, so the faces you have come to know and love over the years will still be here to serve and prepare our quality produce, which will still come from Allan’s farm. It will be business as usual and not a lot will change. There may be a few new and exciting products in the coming months but good old quality and service will remain paramount.
As the new official owner of Eastern Road Quality Meats, let me please start by saying a big thank you for how welcoming everyone in the community has been so far – it is very encouraging and humbling. My name is Luke Orchard and I started my career as a Retail Butcher 16 years ago. In that time I have been blessed to work in many prestigious butcher shops across New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory, where I learnt many things and came across a range of innovative products. I have a passion for food – in particular fine food based on Quality Local Produce. This started at a young age for me, being raised on the land in the Northern Tablelands district of NSW. I looked at many shops to purchase but Eastern Road Quality Meats was an easy choice: it prides 12

I have big shoes to fill as Allan is well known in the community for his many years of service but I look forward to the challenge and am excited for the many good years to come. We wish Allan and Kate all the best for their future adventures. Allan will still be a part of the processing stage as he will spend more time growing our lovely produce. We look forward to meeting many new faces over the coming months and providing old-fashioned service with a new-fashioned flare. Until we meat again, thank you!

Suburb Safari GREAT PLACES TO PLAY ON THE NORTH SHORE
Luna Park is an old favourite sitting in such a picturesque spot on the most beautiful harbour in the world, and there’s so much to do. I reckon it’s a must see spot in Sydney for you and your children. Don’t just leave it to the tourists!
BY ELISSA TOMLINS, LOCAL MUM
... LET’S TALK LUNA PARK
We caught the train; Luna Park is an easy and pleasant stroll from Milsons Point station. I also suggest heading down through Bradfield Park to the foreshore first and taking a wander, especially if it is a pleasant day. Your little one will love spotting the ferries and yachts, and when they tire of that, you can always watch the swimmers in the North Sydney Olympic Pool for a few minutes. After you have finished your day, catch the bus up the hill back to Milsons Point or North Sydney station and avoid the walk. Once you arrive at Luna Park, you will need to buy a day pass. You will also need to pay for an accompanying adult for most of the rides, so make the commitment to spend the whole day to get the best value. Buying tickets online or visiting on a school day may also help. There are plenty of rides that little children (over 90 cm tall) can go on and there is even a section for pre-schoolers at the far end of the park. There are four rides that do not need an accompanying adult. My daughter loved the thrill of the Whirly Wheel, Spaceship and the mini Ferris Wheel. The Carousel was also a favourite. There is always a promotion of some sort. My little one enjoyed meeting some large characters from the latest Ice Age film, but you never know what will be the flavour of the month when you arrive. Like all fun parks, food is available to purchase but not wonderful or inexpensive, so consider a packed lunch and just purchase the treats. We stopped for some old fashioned fairy floss, it was big enough to feed all three of us! I’m sure your parents took you to Luna Park when you were a child, so now it’s time to pass the experience onto the next generation.

Two locals solving parking congestion BY SPACER SELF STORAGE
For many Sydney commuters parking options are scarce and inconvenient, particularly around stations on the North Shore.
simply by renting out their unused single lock-up garage space for storage. Traditional self-storage brands (Kennards, Storage King) dominate the storage landscape and gorge off the lack of options available for consumers. Common complaints include high costs and extra charges for insurance, lock-in contracts for minimum periods, inconvenient locations, and inconvenient access within facilities. The traditional self-storage market is worth $1 billion as an industry but what is called the grey market – parents storing their kids’ goods in their garages – is worth an additional $5b. Peer-to-peer self-storage provides the convenience of a location in your local neighbourhood. It is a relatively new concept in Australia, however in Europe there are now thousands of people sharing space. It follows in the footsteps of Uber and Airbnb in the rising tsunami that is collaborative consumption. Initially sceptical about renting out her garage, Lindfield resident Kylie was convinced by testimonials and Spacer’s thorough vetting process, as well as the fact that she could accept
Shrinking living spaces and a rapidly growing urban population means that our cities are becoming severely overcrowded. Space is expensive and becoming more so, and as it does, so too does the cost of metropolitan storage space. A new start-up has emerged to disrupt the industry and significantly reduce storage costs. Two North Shore entrepreneurs have teamed together to build online service, Spacer.com.au. Both founders have successful track records in establishing startups and venture capital. Mike Rosenbaum is a tech nerd and cofounder of Auction Brokers and Deals Direct, before selling the business to Grays Online. Roland Tam has completed in excess of $200m worth of private equity and M&A transactions. Spacer is an online marketplace for storage space. The business connects hosts (people with a garage, yard or room) with renters looking for affordable, convenient and accessible storage options. Being a peer-topeer service, storage costs are up to 50% cheaper than traditional storage solutions and Spacer manages the vetting of all renters, payments and property guarantees on behalf of all users. Spacer Hosts (typically empty nesters or young families) make on average $3,000 per year, 16

or reject renters on her terms. "My space is my sanctuary and I didn’t just want any stranger storing stuff in it. But looking at the website and understanding that I was in control gave me confidence to try it out, and I couldn’t be happier." Kylie now rents out her lock up security garage to a fellow North Shore resident for $220 per month, who uses it to store personal items and supplies. The garage is centrally located and with full secure and remote access the renter can access equipment as they need. "The extra income is handy, but best of all, I know my unused space is being used for a social purpose and that absolutely delights me." Spacer.com.au launched in September 2015, raising $1.3m for seed and angel investors. Since then the business has grown remarkably, having just hit over 1,500 listings across Australia, proving the sustainability of the model. "We are delighted with the initial uptake and market response," says Rosenbaum, "our focus at present is building up the number of hosts we have on-board to ensure we can meet demand."

Remember the 90’s? They’re baaaaack!!! This season channel your inner Baywatch babe with high cut one piece suits and plenty of cropped tops to go around. We thankfully get a break from the monochromatic palette of last year with some seriously far-out, vibrant 90’s inspired computerized prints. An easy way to coordinate with the vibrancy of these prints is to simply over lay with lacey white bridal-esque dresses and kaftans. This bridal trend is set to hit stores for our swimwear too with lacey or white laser cuts swimsuits a plenty!

Sporty, athletic cuts are unquestionably a stand out trend this spring. High neckline tops, long sleeve spring suits, performance designed one pieces, cropped tops and midrise bikini leg cuts make this trend not only practical but flattering as well. Zippers, exposed stitching, capped and long sleeves all contribute to make this athletic look my most desired.

HOW TO:
Clean out your makeup bag BY ELLEN MALONE, BEAUTY EXPERT
T
he makeup bag is the inner sanctum of a woman’s handbag- one that all too often remains undisturbed in its contents. Spring is the perfect time to dust off the cobwebs and venture into those murky depths. Your mission: only carry what you actually love, that’s fresh, clean, and currently suits you. STEP ONE. Pull everything out of the bag, and wash the actual bag. If it’s old and ratty, now is the time to buy a new one. A clear bag is a great choice- easy to clean, and you can see what you have. STEP TWO. Wash all your brushes, applicators, and sponges, and throw out anything which doesn’t survive the washing process. Wash sponges and foundation brushes with laundry soap, and hair / bristle brushes with shampoo. You can even condition hair based brushes if they are dry or scratchy. STEP THREE. Throw out any makeup which is out of date. Makeup actually has a little jar symbol with a number on it- this is to tell you how many months it can be used after opening. Powders last the longest ( 24 months ) then liquids ( usually 12 months) down to mascaras ( only three months!). If you’re not sure how old it is- assess the smell and texture. If it smells off, or has a film of discoloured gunk on it, it’s off. Be ruthless- it’s not worth an infection.
STEP FOUR. Throw out anything you haven’t used for more than nine months. You don’t love it, so it’s just taking up space. STEP FIVE. Review your foundation, powder, and concealer colour. Most people are at least a shade darker in summer, even if they wear sunscreen. Your current season foundation should match your chest colour. STEP SIX. Restock! Your basic makeup kit should contain: a foundation or tinted moisturiser, a brightening under eye concealer pen, a neutral eyeshadow ( single or palette ) which enhances your eye colour, eye liner, a great mascara, blush/bronzer, a great lippie, lip balm, something for brows, and a few well chosen makeup brushes. Optional extras: white eyeliner for the inner rim, highlighter, an alternate lipstick, finishing powder, and one metallic or smoky eyeshadow for night. STEP SEVEN. Enjoy your beautiful fresh makeup bag.

Inspire Series Former Australian Olympian
Elka Whalan PASSIONATE ABOUT WOMEN, RELATIONSHIPS, MOTHERHOOD AND ENCOURAGING OTHERS
1. WHO ENCOURAGED YOU TO PURSUE YOUR SPORT? I am one of four children, so growing up I would go along to swimming training to watch my older sister and brother. Living on the Northern Beaches you’re surrounded by water. So Nippers at Under 5’s and swim lessons started young because I loved it and for Mum and Dad it was important we did things as a family but also knew our water safety. I have super long legs so I remember winning the State Under 7’s wade at Nippers nippers for Manly and my parents laughed because the water was only ankle deep for me. My costumes never fitted me as my legs were little twigs. Manly Swim Centre and Manly Nippers were our locals so many dear friendships formed.
2. WHAT SCHOOL DID YOU ATTEND AND HOW DID IT INFLUENCE YOUR SUCCESS?
Attitude in life is everything.
I attended Balgowlah Heights Public School along with all my siblings, they were and still are sports oriented and I loved being involved in everything: playing handball early morning at school, netball practice and long jump – it was endless fun. When I was in Year 4 I jumped up and told everyone for show and tell I was going to the Olympics for Swimming so already at age 9 I believed it. I went to Mackellar Girls High School, the motto being “Mackellar girls can do anything.” Again it was highly sport oriented and I dabbled in so much softball, soccer and hockey. Swimming always came naturally to me. One incident I do remember was sitting down telling a prominent staff member I www.livinglocalguide.com.au
wanted to go to the Olympics and do Pathways (Year 12 over 2 years). They replied in a negative way and it still sticks with me now that they didn’t quite understand the dreams of a young woman and wanting to put it all on the line. That one negative comment was outweighed by so many positive moments and such support from so many teachers. The sport staff were incredible: Robyn Brettell, Sue Williams, Michael Murphy, John Donnelly, Mrs Jones and of course Debbie Watson. When she made her comeback for the 2000 Olympics we drew a lot from each other – me being a student and her a teacher but both aiming for the same dream. It was amazing learning from her. Mackellar totally supported me in going for that Olympic Dream and I’ll never forget it.
3. DID YOU EVER FEEL LIKE GIVING UP WHILE YOU WERE TRAINING? There are certainly moments when you think, “Why?” It would be easier to walk away but harder to stay. In life the road less chosen will always take you to greater heights. I’ve always wanted to be an Olympian and the support I’ve had by my parents, siblings and friends has never wavered. I stuck 150 colourful positive quotes up around my room so every morning when I woke I would have the right attitude. Attitude in life is everything.
4. WHO ENCOURAGES YOU NOW? A range of people from my parents to our pastors at church , www.livinglocalguide.com.au
to watching amazing mums do life, to authors and to any person starting a new dream and – instead of doubt or fear holding them back – they go for it. I learn and am inspired by my three young children every day they teach me something new.
5. DIET AS AN ATHLETE? It was important, particularly in certain training phases. The education around that now is so amazing, you can’t go wrong. In Australia we’ve really stepped up in the nutrition department and I was grateful for all the knowledge and support I had from NSWIS and Australian Swimming.
6. DIET NOW? It’s almost even more important now that I’m not training two times a day. Also with three young children under six, teaching them the importance of healthy eating is vital. As always parents know children watch everything you do, say and eat, so having the right food in the house is a must. I’m a low carb, high protein kind of girl.but BUTI I also have a “let-go day,” which is Wednesday, where whatever I feel like I’ll have: Eggs eggs Benedict, chocolate milkshake, cheesecake – you name it, totally guilt free. You have to live.
7. HOW IMPORTANT IS A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE? Super important. If I’m addicted to anything it’s my faith, my family and my fitness. I love running, free weights and swimming. Even dips in the ocean are so refreshing. Often “Dream, Inspire, Grow”

Inspire Series I’ll train in the backyard and the kids will join in. My husband also exercises and together the five of us love all the sports we play and watch together!
8. CAN YOU SHARE SOME HEALTHY DAILY TIPS/ ROUTINES? I try to be active once a day. The children swim, play tennis, do ballet, jujitsu and gymnastics during the week. It certainly makes life full but we meet amazing new friends and the children realise how incredible their bodies are.
9. HOW DID YOU MEET YOUR HUSBAND? We met at the 2004 Athens Olympics, literally in the village, in the computer block. There was one spare seat and it happened to be next to him. Meant to be. Thomas has been to four Olympics and captained the Men’s Water Polo team. I say the greatest blessing that came from swimming was meeting him! I married my best friend and 8 years on we’ve created a family. It’s not your normal “We “we met at the pub” story but it’s special to us and always a reminder of how powerful an Olympics can be.
10. HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK, AND BEING A WIFE AND MUM? Does anyone ever really balance? I sit down and prioritise what’s important. Faith, family, friends, exercise, work, holidays, all are super close to me. I tell myself to do the juggle without the struggle. I wake up every day choosing to be happy and know when it’s time to stop, breathe and take some time out. I truly 30

... I married my best friend and 8 years on we’ve created a family ... love life, I always have. My mum tells people I was born excited. Having a roof over our head, food to eat and a healthy, happy family is everything. There are days that are so crazy, like today as I write this the three children are misbehaving and the pile of washing is beyond, BUT will the children remember the pile of big washing, or that I sat down and read a book to them tonight, cuddled them, engaged with them, and didn’t rush. So to answer your question, “How how do I juggle it all:?”like Likeallallwomen women with enlarged capacity, a full heart and a happy grateful head, wanting to encourage and lift others up. “Dream, Inspire, Grow”
11. HOW HAS HAVING CHILDREN CHANGED YOUR LIFE? It is the most rewarding role in the entire world and also the most challenging. It is upsetting when you hear people say to someone who is areexpecting, expecting, “Well “ well there there goes goes your your life. life.””II think, what positive words are you speaking to these parentsto-be. 12. WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR? So, so much. A strong belief and a great family, both immediate and extended, wonderful friends and new people I’m always having the chance to meet. The opportunity of great jobs and media roles. That I’m healthy and that we truly live in the best country in the world.
13. HOW DO YOU STAY CONTENT? I run. It clears my head. Or I’ll power-walk and listen to a podcast that I have the chance to learn from. I read a lot and I have a wonderful husband who makes me laugh.
14. WERE YOU WATCHING THE RIO OLYMPICS? IF SO, FAVOURITE SPORT TO WATCH? I certainly was. I also worked on radio and TV during the Rio Olympics which was very exciting and brought back amazing memories. To have so many people stop and watch over those two weeks shows you the power of sport. Of course I’m extra interested in the swimming!
15. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO ATHLETES – IN SPORT, AND IN LIFE? Always be happy. Never allow anything outside of you to have an influence unless you choose it. How to save when you have kids BY BLAKE CHANDLER The University of Canberra estimated that it cost an averageearning household $812,000 to raise two kids from birth to leaving home; for a higher income family, the estimate was $1.09 million while a lower income family would spend $474,000. It’s not cheap but there are ways to make your dollar go farther: • Don’t compete: you are raising children. Rather than compete with other parents, get back to the basics: food, shelter, security, love. It’s about what they need, not how you want to be perceived. • Prioritise: parenting means prioritising. What’s crucial, what’s really wanted and what would be nice to have? A home and food on the table, are crucial; a holiday in Bali would be nice. In between are the things that could make family life better, such as vehicles that work, belonging to sports teams, fresh fruit and vegetables, and private health cover. Devote your resources to the things that really matter. • Gold plating: whether you’re looking at car seats, soccer boots, counting blocks, or a laptop, what do you really get for paying three times as much for a brand name? Child seats can only go on sale if approved by the government, so what does your child get for the extra $300 that the flash one costs? Don’t get trapped in over-priced stuff. Research it and perhaps buy it online for a 34
LIVING LOCAL SPRING 2016
fraction of what it costs in a shop. • Know the benefit: structured time such as private tuition, tennis coaching, music lessons etc., can cost a lot of money. But just playing with friends might be beneficial, too. The same goes for private schooling: it might be important to you, but know the benefit to your child. • Provision: some child-costs are predictable. Christmas and school holidays burn up the cash, so why not put aside small amounts each a week to cover this? You can join an education fund for secondary schooling, or save your tax refunds and bonuses for their tertiary education: investing in university and TAFE is valuable because it sets up children for life. • Offset: every time you make the sensible purchase within your budget, take the money you’d have otherwise spent and invest it in a savings vehicle for your holidays or kids’ education, etc. That way you’re not feeling guilty for buying the non-organic veggies or the cut-price laptop: it’s an investment in their future. • Delegate: one way to cap your child budget is to use an allowance – or money from chores – as their walking-around money. If they want to go to the movies or top up their phone accounts, get them focusing on “Dream, Inspire, Grow”
their budgets. It saves you money and it’s educational for the kids. • Separate: you do most of your savings week-to-week by not overspending on your kids. But for savings, use separate accounts or managed funds, not just your ATM account. Finally, your kids are precious no matter what you spend on them. You want them to remember you for the quality of your parenting, not the price tag on your purchases.

“... I don’t like the word failure ...” HOW HAVE YOUR EXPERIENCES AT SCHOOL HELPED YOU?
I have a very hands-on learning style. I have had the opportunity to learn leadership, how to work and how to get things done. Without King’s I would not have started my business. With King’s being one of my clients, I have certainly learnt a lot from other people at the school who have had similar experiences to me, and gone and made their business doing lots of events at King’s like the Art Show. King’s has been the backbone to the start of my business.

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE? WHAT MINDSETS HAVE HELPED My mum would have to be first. She drove me around and YOUR SUCCESS? From my experience to be decisive, concise, clear and to the point. “Don’t give them problems, give them solutions instead.” This is something I utilise and have taken into the workplace. My Commanding Officer, Major Hilliard, had a big impact on teaching me this, it has been invaluable as I have taken it on board and put it into practice with my business.
WHERE HAS YOUR MOTIVATION COME FROM? Balancing I find difficult. Motivation comes from things like the effects you can get from lighting. I really enjoy lighting and seeing the results. Lately I have had to start working harder “Dream, Inspire, Grow”
helped me get started in her four-wheel drive. She has helped me through a lot. She probably doesn’t appreciate not having a garage at the moment. Also, my family friend, Alexander, has really taught me a good work ethic.
ADVICE FOR OTHER STUDENTS? Never be afraid to fail – I have already had a business that failed. I learnt a lot from that experience. I don’t like the word failure. To me, it is more of an opportunity. To turn it around and learn from what I did wrong in the first business. Also, knowing how to say “No” “no”. Don’t take on more than you can, take the opportunities but learn when and how to say “No. “no”.” www.livinglocalguide.com.au

“... don’t give up and never stop trying ...” HOW HAVE YOUR EXPERIENCES AT SCHOOL HELPED YOU? My school teaches a lot more than just Math and English. At school, I have learnt about myself and what type of person I am. I make mistakes and I learn from them. School has definitely shaped me and taught me who I am. I have made friendships that I will keep for the rest of my life.
TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR PROJECT/PROJECTS? My initial goal was to sew eight dog coats and donate them to the RSPCA. It sounds so simple. It wasn’t. My first step was emailing the RSPCA. I was nervous they were going to turn me down, but they couldn’t have been more friendly and willing. I drew the patterns and started cutting out the materials and assembling the coats. I spent at least one full day a week on my passion project. The coats were so well received www.livinglocalguide.com.au
by people who saw them, that I’ve received orders!
WHERE HAS YOUR MOTIVATION COME FROM? The idea came from my friends and family, especially my mum, but the motivation came from my love for animals. I have always loved animals from a very young age. My first pet was a bird named Tweety when I was 5. I would like to be a vet when I’m older.
WHAT MINDSETS HAVE HELPED YOUR SUCCESS AND TO CONQUER DOUBT/FEAR? I think being opened minded and resilient is really important. Having a positive mindset was definitely one of the reasons I completed my project to the standard that I did. I just kept thinking, “you have started this, it is your responsibility to finish it.” I have had trouble in the past with self-doubt and I’m now definitely more confident in myself. “Dream, Inspire, Grow”
WHO DO YOU ADMIRE? I really admire my mum as she is really kind and thoughtful, and always thinks of others before herself. She has really helped me with my project; I wouldn’t have finished it without her. I also admire my teacher Mrs Sloane, who is a really great teacher and is one of the main reasons I am thriving at school. Also my friend Lexi is a really strong personality and is always there for me. Some famous people I admire are Bethany Hamilton and J.K Rowling.
ADVICE FOR OTHER STUDENTS? If you find school work – or anything in general – challenging, don’t give up and never stop trying. Always aim high and keep trying no matter what. Be confident in yourself and don’t let others put you down. If you believe, you can do anything. LIVING LOCAL SPRING 2016

“... The path will be easier if you surround yourself with people who build you up and have similar aspirations ...” HOW HAVE YOUR EXPERIENCES AT SCHOOL HELPED YOU? Learning at school has not just been subject-based, it’s been a moral and ethical education that’s really helped me discover who I am and what I value.
TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR PROJECT/PROJECTS? Throughout the past year I’ve been leading a group at school that raises funds for people in need through World Vision. Rather strangely, we ended up creating an event called “Diving with the Staff”, where our teachers competed against each other to see who could do the most spectacular dive into the water from boards, and the students paid a gold coin entry fee to watch.
WHAT MINDSETS HAVE HELPED YOUR SUCCESS AND TO CONQUER DOUBT/FEAR?
WHERE HAS YOUR MOTIVATION COME FROM? I thought that I might be able to do something to help another person who needs something. 38
LIVING LOCAL SPRING 2016
There was a quote that really impacted me, I’ll paraphrase it: if you save someone’s life, you save a whole world – their whole world. For a girl of my age it seemed astronomically impossible that I could have any impact on a struggling person who lived an ocean away. I had a conversation with some of my friends about this feeling, and they felt just as passionate. Our school has many opportunities for service, with a little help from each other we stepped up to our corny-sounding goal: to change a world.
I may not always be successful, but I try to tackle challenges with the idea that whatever the outcome, I can learn from it. It’s much easier to see failure as a positive thing, something you can learn from. Perspective is really important. “Dream, Inspire, Grow”
WHO DO YOU ADMIRE? E.G. FRIENDS, FAMILY. Definitely my grandfather. He has a quiet, humble strength about him, he is incredibly intelligent, and he is capable of giving without ever taking, which astounds me. He’s always been there for the people that matter most to him, and his sense of humour is impeccable. Likewise, my friends. They don’t realise what a powerful influence they’ve had on me.
ADVICE FOR OTHER STUDENTS? As a student, you are not powerless. There are always ways that you can achieve your goals. The path will be easier if you surround yourself with people who build you up and have similar aspirations, because you can support each other. Take every opportunity that is thrown at you. See them like doors that lead to more doors.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF AFTER SCHOOL?
I love Knox Grammar School, you get to meet new people and make lifelong friendships. Along with my good mate James Taylor, we do Industrial Technology and love to build things. We built our first project, a wine rack, together, then someone told us it was really nice and they would love to have one. So we knew it was a viable business idea.
I love hands-on work and I love creating things, so most of my motivation has been a creative drive to build new products. I also push myself, I don’t want the effort to go to waste.
Well, I love hands on work so I am hoping to pursue a career in engineering. I believe the skills taught from the $20 Boss program are essential life skills which will help in any career.
WHAT MINDSETS HAVE HELPED YOUR SUCCESS AND TO CONQUER DOUBT/FEAR?
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER STUDENTS THINKING OF BECOMING ENTREPRENEURS?
TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR $20 BOSS PROJECT? I created a company called Thinking Outside The Pallet (TOTP) with my mate James Taylor. We collect wooden pallets from industrial parks, take them back to our workshop and create unique pieces of furniture. The idea came from my dad who runs a warehousing business and he receives heaps of pallets. As soon as he heard about the project, he suggested creating things using them.

I think having a growth mindset has really helped as it has allowed me to take risks which has ultimately led to the success of the business.
WHO DO YOU ADMIRE? E.G. FRIENDS, FAMILY, CELEBRITIES? My dad has been the person who has really guided me and has inspired me to pursue the idea. He is a business man himself and he was able to give me so many invaluable tips.

Make sure you find something that you are passionate about. This will make it so much easier to keep going with your business and ensure it doesn’t just fade away. Another thing is, don’t go into business for the money. Go into business trying to make a positive change, for people or for the planet. If you do this the money will come.

“... Do meaningful work that serves and contributes to the world in a positive way ...” HOW HAVE YOUR EXPERIENCES AT SCHOOL HELPED YOU? I’ve been privileged to go to a school that offers opportunities to try different things, up-‐skill in various areas, work on my flaws and discover my strengths. School has fostered organisational skills and has allowed me to engage with other motivated students.
TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR PROJECT/PROJECTS? I’ve been actively involved with the organisations Room to Read and Girl Rising since I was 12, which promote global literacy and gender equality throughout Africa and Asia. I have spoken at local schools and for organisations such as Rotary and UN Women Sydney. In 2013, I was extremely privileged to attend the United Nations Youth Assembly in New York. My family and I raised $40,000 over a period of 14 months, which was enough to build two libraries for primary schools in Cambodia. In addition, for Duke of Edinburgh I led a small group of students which 42

raised over $10,000 for Room to Read over a period of six months. With two other students I am in the F1 in Schools program. The competition requires teams to design, manufacture, race and market a miniature Formula1 car. We will represent Australia as Team ZERO at the World Finals in Texas this October and must fund our way by gaining business and crowd sponsors. To combine my interests of social justice, environmental issues, and visual content, I started a social media campaign on Facebook and YouTube called “We are World Change.” And I run Lorschy Photography on Facebook and Instagram. I’m working on a website and hope to start selling prints online!
WHERE HAS YOUR MOTIVATION COME FROM? It’s this desire to see how much I can accomplish and a longing to create something of value. I believe that what I have to “Dream, Inspire, Grow”
sacrifice today so that someone else breathes easier tomorrow, is absolutely worth it.
WHAT MINDSETS HAVE HELPED YOUR SUCCESS AND TO CONQUER DOUBT/FEAR? It’s important to hold myself to high standards. I write out my goals and work towards them. I surround myself with positive people who share similar values, yet have different interests and skill sets.
WHO DO YOU ADMIRE? E.G. FRIENDS, FAMILY. My family. My grandparents overcame all odds escaping Hungary during the Russian Revolution and built a brilliant life in Australia. My amazing single mum raised my twin brother and me. I couldn’t ask for a more supportive family.

Claudia Studdert TEENAGE ENTREPRENEUR initiative and insight. These traits now help me in running my marketing consultancy.
WHERE IS YOUR OFFICE BASED?
I predominantly work from my home office but at some stage will look at investing in an office in more of a business setting. I am also able to use my dad’s office in the city. When I meet with clients it is usually in a café or in their own vicinity. Ex-Pymble Ladies College girl, Claudia Studdert, had a dream to start her own business. Fresh out of school she launched Media Connect Consultancy, a digital marketing company specialising in managing your business’ social media world and reviewing its external image. Also a student, Studdert is studying a combined Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Medical Science degree at the University of Technology Sydney.
WHAT YEAR DID YOU LEAVE PYMBLE LADIES COLLEGE AND HOW SOON AFTER DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS?
I graduated in September 2015, and had my final HSC exam in November. I started the planning stages whilst I was still at school (I was too excited), and by January I was ready to go out and win my first few clients.
HOW HAS PYMBLE LADIES COLLEGE CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR SUCCESS?
Pymble has shaped me into the young woman I am. Being there for 13 years gave me an incredible amount of confidence and courage and showed me the endless possibilities for young women in Australia today. I also learnt how to appropriately handle myself and to show
HOW MANY HOURS EACH WEEK DO YOU WORK AND WHAT’S YOUR SCHEDULE LIKE?
This really fluctuates week to week - it could be as little as 6 hours or as many as 25. Sometimes I will get a lot of work done the week before I have a major show (I am a competitive show-jumper). I work out what must be done at the start of each week so I know how much of my time I must allocate and when.
WHAT ARE THE HARDEST AND BEST THINGS ABOUT BEING YOUR OWN BOSS?
The hardest is probably being confident in myself and my decisions, all the time. The best is the flexibility that allows me to design each aspect of my own life. And how much fun it is!
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN BUSINESS AND WHAT’S NEXT?
The future. I am always searching for what I can do next to grow my business. Also, how I can improve myself and my skills. I want to keep having fun and continue to make my clients happy by achieving great results.
WHAT SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS DO YOU USE AND HOW HAS THAT BEEN EFFECTIVE?
Instagram has become one of the biggest social media platforms
BY KATE COURTNEY-O’CONNOR
“…communicate what you can do very clearly, and go out and do it...” and a huge marketing utility for businesses today. Each client likes to use a different combination of social media platforms whether it be Facebook, YouTube, Instagram. Paired with publicity and EDMs, you have a winning combination.
BEST PIECE OF MARKETING ADVICE FOR A SMALL BUSINESS ON A BUDGET?
Research! Find out what works best for businesses such as yours. And find (and hire!) someone like me who works to budgets of all kinds! Sometimes you have to invest a little bit of money to make money.
IF YOU COULD GIVE YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS STARTING OUT ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Be confident – if you don’t back yourself then no one else will. Read books and educate yourself in the area you want to excel in. My dad made me read Rich Dad Poor Dad and How to Win Friends and Influence People before he would even talk to me about anything else. Make sure you have some sort of business mentor. My dad was a huge inspiration and I couldn’t have done it without him; I was very lucky to have someone with his experience, success and expertise behind me. Don’t get stuck in the planning stages and logistics for too long, communicate what you can do very clearly, and go out and do it.
Jordan Floyd TEENAGE ENTREPRENEUR
Student at The King’s School and owner of 45 Productions lighting, sound and visuals for events, theatre and concerts HOW DO YOU WORK AROUND SCHOOL HOURS? It can prove to be quite difficult at times and involves a lot of late nights rather than during school. HOW DO YOU USE TECHNOLOGY TO STREAMLINE TIME MANAGEMENT? Time management is something I have learnt along the way. I use technology to combine a lot of manual tasks (which would normally take a long time) into one application. It connects to everybody and sends out invoices with ease. I also use my book to draw and write in to brainstorm and plan. I like to take a step
away from technology. WHAT SUBJECT HELPS MOST WITH TECHNOLOGY? Software design - I just finished my major project which has doubledup as a software assignment which I use in the business. HOW MANY EVENTS HAVE YOU DONE SO FAR? We are about to hit our 40th production this year. Our target is to triple last year’s total - a lot to juggle on top of doing the HSC. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT CUSTOMER SERVICE? To be concise, clear and to the point. Important when using a lot of technical language that could
be confusing to some clients. Don’t give them problems, give them solutions. Mr Hilliard has had a big impact on teaching me this. WHERE DO YOU SEE THIS BUSINESS GOING AFTER SCHOOL? I would love to keep expanding. I have a plan and I would love to initiate it. Long term, possibly split it up into a few subsidiaries. I am organised with my business but not as much with school until recently. I have never been one to just sit in a chair and listen. Finding motivation to do the stuff I don’t want to do but need to do, is where King’s has really helped me.

How to make it through a challenge... We spoke to five top entrepreneurs about how they make it through challenges in business. LASSO CREATIVE
We are a creative studio, nestled in the upper North Shore. Champions of fresh design and brilliant branding, who value clever and creative marketing. We love what we do, deliver what we promise and genuinely care for our clients. www.lassocreative.com.au Answer: Surrounding yourself with an equally passionate team is key. We truly love what we do, and thankfully, bad days are very few and far between. However, when they do happen, we literally change the station. The studio is always alive with music, so we’ll change up the beat, or regroup with an impromptu yoga session.
DESIGN BY VA
We are a husband and wife (Veronica Howard: Interior decorator/styler and Aidan Thomas: Builder) duo who focus on residential and commercial real-estate investments and developments. Instagram page: @designbyv.a Answer: We are very motivated and passionate about what we do, so that always makes it a lot easier to keep moving forward during difficult periods. We continuously bounce ideas off one another, until we come to a solution or resolution. It also definitely helps when you have someone to reassure you, that what you are doing is the right thing. To think positively is the best thing a person can do. (I know, easier said than done.)
OUTSPIRE
I have created a program that sees me taking on extreme challenges all over the world to support small charities. Each challenge I take on represents a new charity and my personal aim is to raise over $1 million dollars in my lifetime with all proceeds going to the charities. www.outspire.org Answer: I have certainly lacked motivation and have even been at points where I was truly afraid of what I was up against, however thinking of the people that are in need of the charities that I am supporting always pulls me through. Always. I have learned a key lesson in this, and that is our determinations have to be driven by purpose. Find your purpose and back yourself in committing to it.
FUELBOX
FuelBox is a communication toolbox, giving couples, families and businesses the opportunity to have more connected, meaningful and fun conversations. www.fuelboxaustralia.com.au Answer: I consistently come back to my ‘Why’. Why did I start this business? Why do I believe in it? Reminding myself how this product is helping people and changing their lives for the better. I also try to give myself pats on the back. It is really important to acknowledge your achievements. Positive praise is priceless.
TASHLA369 PTY LTD Our business is patented and is currently awaiting delivery of a unique and innovative safety device called dTec SafeKam, this device combines the functions of the standard HD dash camera (monitoring and loop recording front of car images) with interior viewing camera and motion detection for the purpose of preventing the death or injury to children and animals by hot vehicle entrapment. www.tashla369.com.au Answer: The ebbs and flows of creating a unique device are similar to that experienced in life, little wins along the way make it all worthwhile, news articles, Mumpreuneur awards nominations and the general feedback throughout industry contacts boost us after really doubting using all our finances to do this.

Your sense of accomplishment should keep you going. Buddying up with a friend or training partner is another easy way to stay motivated. They will help keep you accountable to your fitness goals, and you to theirs. 5. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS Using a digital tracking device is a great way to see all the benefits of your training as you build momentum. And, it’s not just about how many calories your burn or kilometres you run, although seeing those improvements are inspiring. But, other daily rewards worth recording include: more solid sleep, a lower resting heart rate and taking more steps in a day. This type of feedback is a real buzz for motivation and helps keep you on track to achieve overall fitness goal.

Finding fitness is like finding love BY ANNA GRECO, SQUARE BOX FITNESS - WWW.SQUAREBOXFITNESS.COM.AU
The health benefits of having friends in fitness are well documented, increasing motivation, better fitness results and improving mental health. The ‘feel good’ chemical reactions of joy, happiness, love and fulfilment can only be fully initiated in the physical human relationship. This hormonal system has not changed since caveman’s need to hunt, gather, cook and eat meals together for the tribe’s survival. The chemical hormones Endorphins, Dopamine, Serotonin and Oxytocins ensure we live a life worth living together. Endorphins and Dopamine are the “me” hormones, giving us a “rush” by simply achieving our set goals
and exercising. Unfortunately, the highs of these hormones cannot be sustained which is the reason that fitness initiatives fail or addictions are formed. We need the Serotonins and Oxytocins - the “us” hormones. They balance the “me” hormones. Serotonin is responsible for the need to feel pride, have status and be a valued member of society. Oxytocins are known as the “cuddle” hormone - love, trust, family, friends and living in a community. It binds us together; presenting as feelings of safety, care and the process of falling in love…Rarely do we meet someone and instantly decide on a lifetime relationship. “Love at first sight” is possible but without the enduring
feelings of trust and safety, the relationship cannot be sustained. Finding fitness is like finding love. Initially, it is exciting as Endorphins and Dopamine surge through our system. With Serotonin we have pride for participation and as we continue exercising with a group of friends, we are further rewarded with Oxytocins – joy and happiness that can only come from having a secure relationship of trust and care for others who are exercising with us. Our friendships in fitness are more than just exercising together; they are about genuinely caring for the group’s wellbeing as individual human beings helping sustain us.

Your Wellbeing
Parasites and your pet BY DR BRITT-LOUISE KARLSSON - BVSC MSC ZOOLOGY - GREENCROSS VETS KU-RING-GAI
Cats and dogs often suffer from parasites which can cause mild to severe discomfort. Here are the top four most common parasites that affect our pets: HEARTWORM Heartworm is spread through mosquito bites and can cause heart and lung disease. It is very rare but humans can also be infected with heartworm. The most common symptoms are coughing, exercise intolerance, breathing difficulties and weight loss. But there may be no symptoms of infection at all.
FLEAS Fleas are parasites living on your pet’s skin and can be very difficult to get rid of. Fleas breed fast and a small number of fleas can become thousands of eggs very quickly. The flea pupae are highly resistant to pesticides and survive in your home for a year or more and as they hatch they will continue to infest your pets. Fleas also carry tapeworm which can transfer to your pets and family.
During September and October Greencross Vets Ku-Ring-Gai are highlighting the importance of checking your pets for parasites and how they affect their health. Speak with one of our friendly staff members today to make an appointment and we will help you tailor a preventative health care plan that suits you and your pet!
TICKS There are a few different ticks in Australia however the paralysis tick is among the most dangerous. It is estimated that over 75,000 dogs and cats are paralysed each year and unfortunately, many die. The tick injects a neurotoxin when they bite that causes paralysis. If you suspect tick paralysis please see your vet immediately, your pet can deteriorate very quickly! INTESTINAL WORMS Intestinal worms infecting cats and dogs are; hookworm, roundworm, tapeworm and whipworm. Their eggs are passed in faeces and can infect other animals, including humans. Occasionally, the worms are seen in the faeces as thin spaghetti or short ‘rice grain’ segments. Left untreated they can cause significant internal damage and in severe cases anaemia or death. 54

Making an entrance BY SUSAN POTTHURST, ELEGANT OUTDOORS GARDEN CENTRE, TURRAMURRA
It’s true! Plants make you happy! So wouldn’t it be nice if they were the last thing you see when you close the front door in the morning and the first thing you see when you return in the evening. Whether your door faces north, south, or somewhere in between, there’s a plant combination suitable for every entrance. Play with the shapes and sizes of the plants to suit your area, but always use colour as a link by picking up the tones in your walls, door and window trims and to compliment the other plants in your garden. In semi-shade, one of my absolute favourite plant combos is the New Zealand Flax or the clump-forming varieties of Cordyline partnered with Heuchera, which has ridiculously handsome foliage. There are www.livinglocalguide.com.au
many colours available to brighten up those somewhat darker doorways and the Heucheras add even more interest and delight when they flower. TIP: remove the Heuchera’s old leaves and spent flowers to keep your display healthy and looking pristine. For a formal look plant pretty annuals or trailing flowering perennials around the base of topiaries or standards. Mass plant violas for a fabulous carpet underneath a standard Lilly Pilly or Ficus through winter and spring or for a more permanent look, choose Bacopa and trim it a few times a year to promote thick new growth and even more flowers. TIP: give your hero plant a haircut at least twice a year, early in spring and autumn, to keep it from having a bad hair day!
“Dream, Inspire, Grow”
If your entrance gets full sun, why not take advantage of the massive array of flowering perennials that just love to catch the rays. For a sophisticated impact, choose just one plant variety that produces flowers year round, like Geraniums and Dipladenias. But hey, why not throw out the rule book and fill your pots with a kaleidoscope of colours, whatever takes your fancy! Either way, I’ll guarantee you won’t be able to stop yourself from smiling every day.

And I know what goes on it: I Now we are running two spread the organic compost. To farms. We are breeding most me, the farms are really just an of our cattle at our cool climate extension to the butcher shop, farm at Carcoar, in the Central producing good wholesome Tablelands. At Home
It is a pleasure to work and own a business in such a great community with people that are not only my customers but also my friends. The fact that you appreciate good food makes our job a whole lot easier!
The time of our lives
“Your support has been fantastic and quite overwhelming" It has been almost 20 years. Really, the time has flown by! It has seemed to my fantastic customers to have happened quickly but in fact Luke has been wanting to buy the butcher shop for some time and I finally weakened. There was not one clear reason to sell but 20 little ones. It is the hardest, hardest decision that I have ever made. It has been extremely humbling to hear that we will be missed and that the community loves our business. About six years ago we took our only ever trip to Europe; we went to France on a food trip – as you do. It was on this trip that I decided that we, and all food businesses in Australia (a country that produces the best food) really needed to lift the bar. 58
LIVING LOCAL SPRING 2016
We arrived home with a new enthusiasm to take our shop to another level. We decided to add an extra professional edge to our whole approach to food, staff, service and being a trained craftsman. The following year we won "Best Overall Business" on the North Shore, in the Better Business Awards. We absolutely love our business, our customers and our staff. Every day has been a joy. There were a few testing moments at Christmas getting the turkeys just right, but I really have loved every minute. Our life is the fortunate life. We love the shop – it’s not a job, it’s a passion. We sell food, we sell great food. We grow food; it’s great food. We live it and we love it. Our own Lamb from the farm has won two years in a row at Sydney’s Fine Food RAS “Dream, Inspire, Grow”

Show. People say we work hard but it’s not really work when you love it. The shop is our passion; the farms are my love. How many people work in a job they love every day? We are so fortunate. We have won many awards. Many people within the trade have congratulated us on our shop and recognise it as one of Sydney’s best. Our biggest achievement has been having the pleasure of owning a business and getting to know such great people. Our customers are our friends, we love and respect them. Our customers – and our staff – are what make the business what it is today. Your support has been fantastic and quite overwhelming. We have no regrets and are so proud of our shop. We still love food. We always will. Where to from here? We are not moving to the farm but will still produce cattle and lambs and will focus more on that. If you ever see Kate and me out and about, please say hi, as we love talking to our "old" customers. You can follow our new life on Facebook: Borambil Farm. Are you ready to sell?

SELLING YOUR HOME
more listings will emerge during spring, or whether sellers have taken advantage of the buoyant conditions of the past couple of years and perhaps listed earlier than originally planned.
Residents of the Upper North Shore can be assured that the area is not waning in its popularity with buyers. Properties are continuing to sell well, still often at record prices. Demand is far exceeding supply for most of our homes and prospective purchasers are often keen to negotiate in the early days of a property being listed. The number of properties being offered for sale is less than the number listed at the same time last year. It is difficult to know whether this is seasonal and that
PREPARING YOUR HOME Many people think that, prior to selling, they need to completely revamp their home in order to maximise their sale price.
Experience has shown that, often, this is not the case and vendors have been known to spend large sums of money which have not been recouped.
Most properties will certainly benefit from de-cluttering and a thorough clean, preferably professional, will enhance any home. Beyond this, it depends on your likely buyer as many of the older homes in the area are being demolished and many of those wishing to renovate have their own ideas. If you are either considering the sale of your home or just seeking an idea of the likely price it might achieve, please feel free to call us any time for an obligation free appraisal. We are also happy to provide you with a guide to preparing your home for the market. Please call us and we can send you a copy, either by email or by post for a printed version. If you have a pool you need to be aware that the long-awaited changes to the legislation are now law. It is imperative that your pool is registered and, if you are considering the sale or leasing of your property within the next 12 months or so, it would be wise to begin the certification process. We have found that the task of obtaining a certificate can be a lengthy one and it is important to act now to ensure that you comply with the law.
Please feel free to call us if you would like further information or assistance with pool compliance. Call us on 9449 3075. 60
