ISSUE 92
Living Magazine.
January 2012
‘Living Magazine brings together residents and local businesses to achieve a mutually beneficial media that supports community living’ Welcome to the January issue of Living Magazine. What a difference from 2011! I remember putting last year’s January issue together in the grip of an arctic freeze that seemed to last all winter. This winter has been the complete opposite so far, warm and wet. It just shows, you never can tell. Those of you that read my monthly note will know the importance I place on the local community. From next month, Living Magazine will be really concentrating on this important aspect. We are trying to get as much community and local information as possible to publish, so you all know what is going on in your community. To make this successful we need your help. If you are involved in community activity and want to tell people about what you do then contact us. Even if you just want to announce a meeting or event or encourage new members then get in touch and we’ll see what we can do to help. In the meantime please support our advertisers, if you can, as they are a vital part of the community, providing local services for local people.
Best wishes, Amanda

Health & Beauty SPOTLIGHT ON...
News from Capricorn by Sheila Stewart
Animal rescue
We have had a very busy Christmas and New Year, although I did get a Christmas dinner this year as we closed for 2 hours on christmas Day and went to a local pub for a Christmas meal, and it was great !
Do you remember Luke and Leah the two lurchers, who came in to us in the Summer, both very emaciated and covered in wounds and scars. Well, they have both been homed and both have returned to show us how good they now look. It is hard to even recognise them as the same dogs, and it was so good to see them looking so good and so obviously loved and members of their respective families. That is the reward we seek, knowing that they have not only survived but are fit, healthy and very much loved.
Little Robyn, the tiny 8\9 day old kitten I took in before Christmas, found cold and abandoned under a hedge hs survived and although small for her 8 weeks of age, is afraid of nothing. She beats up the dog, pinching his food then eating her own. She needs to grow a bit more before she can be inoculated and homed but she should be ready to go in about three weeks At the moment we are haveing a big sort out, we are getting all of the empty cages, hutches and pens cleaned, disinfected ready for the Spring influx of baby animals that we know will come into the Sanctuary. It is a big job and will probably take us about a week to complete but we will then be ready for Spring. I would like to thank everyone who sent donations, pet food, bedding and items to sell in our Charity Shop, we couldn’t keep going without you. We had our annual A.G.M. and Capricorn Get Together just before Christmas and everyone had a great time. This is held so that all of the volunteers, from the shops, the Sanctuary, dog walkers, members, supporters in every way can come along, have a good feast and meet everyone who is involved in Capricorn and this year Clive (he cares for our ferret population) was presented with his 5 Year Volunteer Certificate and Gladys, who runs our raffles for us, was presented with her 25 year Volunteer Certificate.

This press pack Why do children need fostering? provides key facts, information and case studies to help support articles and features about fostering and the need for more people to come forward. Foster carers look after children so that families have the chance to sort out their problems. These problems can range from a family member’s short-term illness to a Contents parents depression or drug or alcohol abuse. Many children have been abused or neglected. Why do we need more people to think about fostering? Some Fostering FAQs children will

What does a foster carer do? Foster carers provide children with their day-to-day care. But fostering is much more than this. Foster carers may have to help these children come to terms with difficult or traumatic experiences. They support children in their education, look after their health and promote social wellbeing. The role is varied and challenging, and also includes attending meetings, keeping records, managing behaviour and promoting contact with birth families. Foster carers receive pre- and post-approval training and support to help them develop the skills needed to do this challenging and rewarding work. Who can be a foster carer? Almost anyone can apply to be a foster carer, but as with any job, some people will be more suited to it than others. Prospective foster carers need skills and experience that will enable them to meet the needs of vulnerable children and young people who are separated from their families. Fostering services need to recruit a variety of foster carers to offer as much choice as possible to children and young people. People can apply to foster regardless of marital status, sexuality or residential status. Foster carers come from a diverse range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds which reflect the children and young people who are in care. People who have ever been convicted of a sexual offence or a violent act towards a child are not able to apply to foster. Do foster carers get paid? All foster carers receive a fostering allowance which should cover the cost of caring for a fostered child. These vary across the UK, but in England, Wales and Northern Ireland there are national minimum allowances agreed by government. Some fostering services also pay their foster carers a fee on top of the allowance, in recognition of their time, skills and experience. Prospective foster carers should not be afraid to ask local fostering services about the financial support that they offer.
“I'm now at university doing really well for myself and I'm so much happier than before. I feel that this is due to the support I received from my foster carers when I was a teenager. They are the reason for a major turning point in my life and the reason for my success today. Andrew Mulley, care leaver

Hawarden Rangers U10s tournament at Carrington 2011
Hawarden Rangers were invited to take part in the Manchester United Challenge Cup at the First Team Training ground of Manchester United (Carrington) . On arrival at Carrington the Hawarden Squad were given a member of coaching staff from the academy for the day, their own changing room and a tour of the facilities at the complex. The boys were also given a skills challenge to complete before the tournament begun where scores were recorded and a winner was announced at the end.
The Challenge Cup consisted of 32 invited teams to take part in a group pool with the winners going through to the final. Hawarden Rangers were unlucky to come runners-‐up and were praised by several members of the coaching staff with regards their team spirit, attitude and performance on the day. This bodes well for future Hawarden Rangers teams being invited to this event. The U10s played against Cheshire Boys, Cherry Brook from Warrington and Failsworth from Manchester. Hawarden beat Failsworth 2-‐0, drew 1-‐1 with Cheshire Boys and lost 1-‐3 to Cherry Brook, the eventual winners. The pitches were immaculate and what a fantastic opportunity for these young players to experience facilities such as these. The coaches and organisers were very helpful during the morning and hopefully the players will remember this experience for years to come. All players received a certificate and most importantly a packed lunch for their efforts!
