Travel Tips

Visiting the Islands

It’s highly recommended that you experience more than one city/island in Greece. Tickets are easy to find at local airports and flight durations are relatively short. For example, a flight from Santorini to Athens is slightly under an hour in flight time. However, if you do decide to reside in one region throughout your trip, make sure to see every inch of the area that you can! This includes art + culture, beaches + nature, shopping, and of course – eating!

When to Visit Greece

Of course, Greece is gorgeous during all times of the year. The hottest season is July-August or the beginning of September, so if you want to beat the heat, avoid these months. The most affordable and least-touristy time of the year typically occurs between October-March, and the sweet-spots for visitation are

Safety Greece is absolutely safe for tourists. It’s actually one of the most frequently visited places in the world for tourism. As always, be aware of unpopulated streets or areas you’re uneducated about, although crime shouldn’t be a stressor.

Cash Tips Always keep cash on hand. Credit cards are widely accepted around Greece, although cash is primarily preferred and sometimes easier to use. Some stores may end up charging a large service fee, so to avoid the extra expense

What Dosto

Don’t spend your entire vacation in one city

If your trip time allows, make sure to explore more than one area in the country. Flights are usually short and affordable, making it relatively convenient to get from one place to another. For example, flights from Athens to Santorini are only 50 minutes in duration, and range from $27 – $200 depending on your airline and accommodations.

Get Inspired By History

Even if history isn’t your thing, visiting the ancient sites in Greece can be transformative to your vacation. There’s also much more than the story behind landmarks like the Acropolis that make the site interesting; the stunning architecture and unbeatable landscape are worth seeing alone. However, you should be at least educated on the history basics of Greece before visiting some of the significant attractions.

Visit As Many Beaches As You Can

The beaches in Greece are some of the best in the world. Whether you want peace & serenity or party central, there are designated beaches for every occasion. A few of the best beaches include Kamari in Santorini, Agios loannis in Mykonos, and Elafonissi Beach in Crete. Keep in mind that some of the best local beaches aren’t even on the map! Just wander around the coast & see what you can find. We stumbled on one of the most beautiful small beaches in Mykonos when eating at a very local tavern.

Indulge In Local Restaurants

While you’re likely to find yourself at some touristy spots in Greece, try to look for restaurants that locals enjoy as well. These are places where you’ll find the most authentic food and a fantastic atmosphere. Ask locals! We found a tavern that doesn’t even have electricity per local’s suggestion. It was the best food we’ve ever had.

Appreciate The Arts

When in Greece, you must take time to explore art + cultural attractions, like MATI Art Gallery, the National Archaeological Museum & The Epigraphical Museum of Athens. There are also tons of smaller art galleries that line the streets of cities like Thera, Crete, & Santorini.

Corfu

One of the most exotic and romantic islands of the Ionian island group. Its strong Venetian influence is evident from the city’s architecture and collection of exhibits like the Museum of Asian Art and The Municipal Gallery of Corfu. Aside from town attractions, Corfu’s elegant landscape is overwhelming to the eyes. With lush beaches and rolling green hills, the island represents pure Greek paradise

Santorini

Known as the most romantic city in Greece. Perfect for couples, Santorini offers dreamy, iconic views like Oia, and a peaceful downtown district. You can also explore modern and historical art in Santorini, or venture out on some exciting excursions.

Meteora

Well-known for its fascinating rock formations occupied by Eastern Orthodox monasteries, Meteora is one of the most unique places to visit in Greece. Full of nature & secluded regions, Meteora will provide a truly eccentric experience.

What Leave Behindto

Heavy, heeled dress shoes

This applies to men and women. Leave the heels behind, leave the heavy, leather dress shoes behind; they will not serve you in the hot summer and you’ll be twisting your ankles trying to walk on the cobblestone streets with any sort of heel. It’s best to stick to loafers and cute sandals or flats.

Jeans

With the exception of a light breathable jeans, you probably won’t even bother pulling these out of your suitcase due to the heat. Instead, pack light linen or flowy pants and you’ll be golden!

Accessories

A few basics like golden studs or a simple watch is nice, but you’ll likely be spending most of your time by the sea and will probably want to refrain from wearing many accessories. Plus, heavy/extreme accessories is the last thing you want to have on you when you in the middle of the day in Greece when you are sweaty and hot.

Hiking Boots

A lightweight sneaker will do just fine for most outdoor activities. Hiking boots will quickly become excessive, and of course, they are very heavy to pack. Best to save those for the Africa trip ;)

QUICKSTYLE GUIDE

The same advice applies pretty much throughout mainland Greece and her many islands – travel light, and we mean really light.

Avoid anything too smart/ formal: Greece is very, very casual.

Wear plenty of sunscreen and sunglasses.

If you take a boat trip you may find there’s a cool breeze out on the water. The sun will be extra strong too and you may not have much cover. A sarong, t-shirt or a light wetsuit will give protection from both. Pack for the weather.

It gets hot hot hot in the summer-months of June, July, Au gust and September so pack plenty of sunscreen, a sunhat and sunglasses.

If you plan on traveling to Greece this year, make sure to visit these beau tiful cities: Athens has a little bit of everything. History, art, culture, and an extravagant city and nightlife. Athens is also stunningly beautiful, whether it’s the ancient archi tecture or the gorgeous landscape.

Kastoria is a city in northern Greece in the region of Western Macedonia. It’s been uniquely built into the western shore of Lake Orestiada, encompassed by large limestone mountains. Chania

Chania is a colorful city located on the westernmost side of Crete. Although you can find luxury resorts and tourist attractions here, the majority of villages have maintained their authentic character. Chania consists of both secluded, peaceful areas and bustling regions full of visitors. The city is also home to some of the most majestic beaches in Greece, like Falassarna and Elafonissi. Aside from its undeniably striking views, Chania displays some of the most intriguing architecture derived from Venetian and Turkish influences. Other notable attractions include Medieval Castles, historical museums, and authentic restaurants.

Oia

While you may see your Pinterest flooding with pictures of Oia, the imagery doesn’t do the in-person scenery justice. Oia is a charming, aesthetically-pleasing city in Santorini, with beautiful clandestine beaches, unique shops, and an unrivaled appeal, it’s no wonder Oia is one of the most visited places in Greece. Oia is just around the corner
