we got fitted with a primitive brain which actually attempted to make up our own rules, but didn’t progress. The rules we made up, and before we were six, are the ones we still judge by; they are the ones we’ve locked ourselves into the room with. I would commend to your reading here the articles by Dr Joe Dispenza, “Can you change your brain by thinking differently?”, and by A.C. Ping, “We live in a bubble of perception”, because they are so insightful and helpful. I feel they are potentially life-changing. If you are a regular reader of this column, you will know that I am always saying that, but I know that my own life is always changing as a result of the articles I am honoured to read and publish. So it’s not just an empty promise. A really important article to read is by Andre Leu, “From the frying pan into the fire – chemical pesticides and food irradiation”. Did you think that irradiation was a safer alternative than pesticides? Think again. A couple of housekeeping things now. We have moved – please see the details on p.4 in the left column. You’ll see a few QR codes dotted around in this magazine (a square wiggly barcode). If you don’t have a smart phone

I think that Mothers’ Day came out of the desire to acknowledge that a woman’s nobility is exposed and polished with the constant wear and tear of dependent little beings for whom she has a fierce love. There is something about being a mother that can turn a stone woman into a glowing marble ornament. In this issue we have a good handful of articles about mothers and mothering – starting with the desire to become one and steps to take if you are still trying, and progressing through a few different stages, including Leslie Caplan’s decision to let her teenager go – I cry each time I read it – and perhaps concluding with a warm and wonderful story by James May of his reconciliation with his mother on a night at the Opera House. Rest assured that most of these articles are a good read for guys too – we all have mothers and perhaps need to work on our relationship there. Actually the Family Constellations people have the theory (to which I also subscribe) that we can be totally successful in life if we have a good relationship with our parents. Getting back to the rules of life – as you know, we were not issued with a rule book at the beginning. Scientists have shown that we not only got no rules, but

I n de e d w e a r e all adventurers, aren’t we! What a beautiful race of beings we are – so rich and yet so poor, so strong and weak, so beautiful and at times ugly, and of course we all go from being young to old. Yet always there is that paradox of life where the ego and the soul do a little dance together to test out how the land lies, what the rules are – and whether there are any rules. Look at the beautiful woman above, and on the cover. She’s probably someone’s mother and grandmother now, and I bet she is more rotund and necessarily wrinkled. Is she any less a woman, any less a soul? I’d be willing to bet that she could be more of a woman, while her soul could by now understand some of the rules of life – or she might have decided that there are no rules. Maybe it’s all chaotic or perhaps it just ‘is’. Turn the page and see the happy parents there – and the same family on two other articles in this issue. In the photo on p.4, what I really adore is the father’s proud look. See how he is thrilled to the back teeth with his little daughter and his wife’s handiwork. Doesn’t that gaze, and that sweet little family, make you proud to be a member of the human race? At our best we are noble and loving.

05 Motherhood – a courageous journey I had no choice but to let him go. Half his blood was there. He was born there. He belonged as much there as here. As he boarded the plane at midnight, tears fell like a monsoon of emotion flooding the terrain of my motherhood. 06 A Mother’s Final Gift I have read other personal accounts of dying and some have been all light and love. While A Mother’s Final Gift is suffused with love, the authors do not shy away from any of the pain – emotional and physical, theirs and Louise’s – that inevitably accompany dying for the departing person as well as for those who will be left behind. 07 Women unleashed The Mayans have a prophecy of the eagle and the condor uniting. The eagle represents masculine energy of the intellect, and the condor is the female energy of heart and intuition. The union between the two is said to bring peace to the world. The Hopi Indians say these choices apply personally and collectively.

08 Exercising Australians may be drinking too much South African hydration expert, Professor Tim Noakes, slammed the likes of Gatorade and the role of sports drinks in setting the agenda on fluid intake during exercise, saying Australians are more likely to do damage by over-consumption of fluids than suffer any ill-effects of dehydration.

10 We live in a bubble of perception “We are inside a bubble. It is a bubble into which we are placed at the moment of our birth. At first the bubble is open, but then it begins to close until it has sealed us in. The bubble is our perception. We live inside that bubble all our lives. And what we witness on its round walls is our reflection. The thing reflected is our view of the world.”

12 From the frying pan into the fire – chemical pesticides and food irradiation The proponents of food irradiation state that it is safer than using preservatives or pesticides to kill pests and diseases in food. This not true as the unique radiolytic compounds, benzenes, ketones and free radicals created by food irradiation adversely affect significant areas of the human body.

14 Making up for lost time – a mother and son story It’s always daunting going back to Sydney to catch up with my mother. We care deeply for each other but we were never able to express it. Now she’s almost seventy and I’m in my thirties, we’re finally starting to enjoy each other’s company. 16 Mother love – the mother of mothers’ clubs I heard a comment that after having a baby it was as if “the protective coating had been peeled away from my heart and the world could really hurt me now”. I suddenly felt connected to every other mother on the planet combined with the unbelievably powerful instinct to keep my baby safe. 17 Bubs in bamboo When thinking bamboo, one instantly imagines happy pandas feasting on the young green shoots. But bamboo isn’t only panda food. Long used in Asia to create paper, bamboo has many practical uses and is increasingly utilised to produce eco-friendly fabric for clothes. 18 Can you change your brain by thinking differently? In his research into spontaneous remissions, Dr Dispenza has found similarities in people who have experienced so-called miraculous healings, showing that they have actually changed their mind, which then changed their health. 19 Conscious conception tips to help you become pregnant Do you want to get pregnant and can’t? Or do you know someone who wants to? Perhaps you could explore conscious conception. Deborah looks at what this is and explores the idea that conception is more than just the physical body’s innate ability to get pregnant. She shares tips and exercises. 20 Black & White We interview under 30s for their take on life, and we hope their stories will inspire you. Motherhood – a courageous journey by Leslie Caplan

I h ad no choice but to let him go. Half his blood was there. He was born there. He belonged as much there as here. What kind of mother would let her 16 year-old boy fly halfway around the globe for an open-ended length of time, to land into the arms of an estranged father, culture, family, language? I had no choice but to surrender to his inner calling and to my own knowing that this journey for him was essential to his growth. His placenta was buried there next to the family temple, along with past and future generations. Now he was being called back to his roots, as I always knew one day he would be. I could not stop thinking of all the dangerous things that could happen to him when he left. I had lived on that island for seven years and the darkness of it beats like it has a pulse of its own, with road rage, venomous snakes, spiders the size of starfish, and black magic breathing through the dark jungle veils. The haunting melody of its temple walls swaying in ceremonial procession was now beckoning my son’s return. As he boarded the plane at midnight, tears fell like a monsoon of emotion flooding the terrain of my motherhood. Submerged in my own fear, my own absolute amazement of his courage, his rite of passage, I took a deep breath. It was all I could do to find my way back to his eyes – dark like mine, burning

with intensity, mystery, and a wisdom that stunned me. He looked like a man as I watched him board the plane through the glass wall that now separated us. He held his head high, and I could not help but be completely endeared to that famous Balinese dude swagger from deep inside the curve of his lower back. His slow purposeful walk embodied the strength he was born with. I held my breath as I weaved a prayer deep into the sky that was about to take my son halfway around the planet and away from me. With all my heart I exhaled life into these words: “Dear Bali, you birthed me into a mother as I birthed my son to you 16 years ago. He returns to you now, on a solo journey of selfdiscovery. Keep him safe and protected in the womb of your love. He is yours now.” With the umbilical cord cut and hanging like a vine in the indigo sky, I watched him take his first step into manhood. I saw him blow me a kiss and mouth the words, “Thank you, Mama. Love you.” My heart ached so deeply, I could feel it in my womb. It broke open and outward into a rhythmic, pounding pride of fierce love for this courageous young man who was headed into the abyss of his own heroic journey. Without me, for the very first time.

A Mother’s Final Gift by Joyce & Barry Vissell book reviewed by Daan Spijer T h e ‘gif t ’ t h at is the subject of this book was originally a very personal one. The authors, especially Joyce Vissell, have turned this into a gift to all readers of the book. Those readers who find their lives transformed by it can perpetuate the giving. It is unusual, in our ‘sophisticated’ societies (Australia, New Zealand, North America and much of Western Europe) for anyone to tell their daughter, in her twenties, to celebrate death when it comes, to treat it as an exciting adventure. This sort of talk can seriously upset a young woman who considers herself completely removed from death – something that happens to old people or by accident, not something you plan for, let alone plan to celebrate. Louisa, the mother of the title, told her daughter that she looked forward to death as a great adventure. That adventure was to come many decades later. The authors are medical professionals, running groups to help people develop life skills. Their three children also contribute to the book, which helps make it very personal. I felt that, as the reader, I had been invited into Joyce and Barry’s home, even to sit by the dying Louise’s bed. Such openness and honesty could have made the book heavy going. However, Joyce, in honouring her mother’s gift, brings to the reader Louise’s sense of adventure. I have read other personal accounts of dying and some have been all light and love. While

06 may 2012

A Mother’s Final Gift is suffused with love, the authors do not shy away from any of the pain – emotional and physical, theirs and Louise’s – that inevitably accompany dying for the departing person as well as for those who will be left behind. This honesty in the accounts of all five contributors gives the book believability. It is this honesty, as much as Louise’s gift, that allows the reading of this book to be a transformative experience. There is more to this book, however, than an honest account of a family’s experience of accompanying someone in their dying. It shows that it is possible for someone to die in their own home, surrounded by the familiar and by family and friends. This may not be possible for everyone but, with good planning and good support, it would be available to so many more people who are now taken into the medical mill and lose most of their autonomy and, effectively, most of their rights. It was fortunate for Louisa and her family that hospice services were available for her to die at home. Dying is not a medical condition and we do not deserve to have it treated as such. A Mother’s Final Gift is testament to this. For many people, their fear of death and of dying prevents them truly living. It was Louisa’s embracing of her death as part of life that allowed her to live her life to the full.

Women unleashed by Alison Burton

At ou r Ligh t wor k e r s’ lunch on International Women’s Day, we talked about the fact that for thousands of years the world has been dominated by male energy. This has led to remarkable achievements in science, technology, industry and commerce. I try to avoid stereotyping, but it’s true to say that men are typically adventures, explorers and inventors, striving for bigger, better and further-reaching goals. They can be very driven and competitive. Women on the other hand tend to be the connecting force in a community. They hold families together, organise the social events and nurture the weak or the sick, the children and the elderly – the glue in a society. While men stretch the boundaries, women hold us together. With male energy dominating most cultures in the world, some serious problems have arisen. Although we have aircraft and technology connecting the people on the planet, the female energy that nurtures us and holds us together has been suppressed. Humanity seems to have put power and profit ahead of people. We are still struggling with war, poverty, pollution and disease. According to Dr. David Hawkins, author of “Power versus Force”, we haven’t yet reached the first rung of human evolution since we have not solved even the most basic problem of world hunger. The imbalance of power has taken us on a path towards destruction. We have been disconnected from our heart and soul, and disconnected from the earth that sustains us.

As ancient cultures have indicated, we are now in a time of great change, and female energy is re-awakening. The Mayans have a prophecy of the eagle and the condor uniting. The eagle represents masculine energy of the intellect, and the condor is the female energy of heart and intuition. The union between the two is said to bring peace to the world. This concept is reflected in drawings on the Hopi Prophecy Rock, showing a choice of two paths that humanity could take; one of greed, comfort and profit, represented by a head disconnected from the body, and the other is the path of love, wisdom and compassion, with a drawing of the head attached to the body and therefore connected to the heart. It is said this second path leads to peace, health and prosperity. The first leads to calamity. The Hopi Indians say these choices apply personally and collectively. Uniting male and female energies and connecting the head and the heart won’t happen by doing things differently within our current paradigm. It won’t happen because of pay increases for women or changing legislation about equality. It will only happen as a result of awakening our heart energy and our intuition. As Tracy Bartram said at our lunch, it’s about each of us connecting with the divinity within. This means that we all must shine the light on our dark side and work on a personal level to clear our fears, limiting beliefs, judgement and shame.

Exercising Australians may be drinking too much Expert slams Gatorade for dangerous fluid levels during exercise Sou t h Af r ic a n h y dr at ion expert, Professor Tim Noakes, slammed the likes of Gatorade and the role of sports drinks in setting the agenda on fluid intake during exercise, saying Australians are more likely to do damage by over-consumption of fluids than suffer any ill-effects of dehydration. Prof Noakes addressed over 800 exercise physiologists from across Australia at Exercise & Sports Science Australia’s (ESSA) ‘Research to Practice’ Conference recently. In his keynote address he shared beliefs that the ‘science’ of drinking during exercise was commercially manipulated, with some fatal consequences, and, predictably, that these guidelines were associated with a ten-fold increase in annual turnover for Gatorade from $217 million in 1985 to $2.69 billion, 18 years later. Here’s a summary of what he shared. While the likes of Gatorade have us believe we need to be drinking 1.2 litres per hour during exercise, there is no clinical research that proves this; in fact over-consumption of fluids could be detrimental. These claims have had athletes across the world believe that drinking any less would negatively impact on performance, which is completely unfounded. Some of the most successful athletes in the world are the ones who drink the least. The dreaded ‘dehydration’ disease had to be created only to produce a commercial windfall that would result from this radical change in the drinking behaviour of athletes. Drinking too much during exercise in fact negatively impacts on performance due to the excess weight carried by the athlete and, more seriously, the potentially fatal complication,

08 may 2012

Exercise-Associated Hyponatraemic Encephalopathy (EAHE). In 1965 Dr Robert Cade developed the world’s first sports drink at the University of Florida. He believed that only by drinking during exercise could athletes optimise their performances and protect themselves from heat stroke. This is despite the absence of any evidence, then as now, that dehydration plays any role in the development of heat illness during exercise. Despite the absolute absence of any evidence to support this attractive hypothesis, within a short time this new dogma was accepted by US Army Research Institute for Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), the US Military and a cadre of industry-supported scientists advising important international thought-leaders such as the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Several Position Statements on Thermal Injuries during Distance Running were developed by ACSM in the years that followed, proposing that athletes should drink at high rates during exercise to optimise their performance and reduce their risk of developing ‘heat illness’. These Position Statements and 2007 updates represent an interesting collaboration of the ACSM, funded since 1992 by the US sports drink industry (Gatorade), USARIEM and the US Military – perhaps the single largest user of Gatorade – since all the senior authors were either trained at, or are currently employed by, USARIEM or the US Army. This is not a conspiracy theory – just following the facts and differentiating between guidelines developed for commercial gain and those clinically proven.

We live in a bubble of perception by A.C.Ping

“D ou bt i s u ncom forta ble; certainty is ridiculous.” [Voltaire] I’m guessing that by now, if you’ve read ‘Your Greatest Gift is Truth’, you may have spent a good portion of your time taking a deep breath and fearlessly telling people your heartfelt truth? How many times have you been shocked by the response? It’s kind of like spending a great deal of time thinking about what someone would like for their birthday and then spending even more time carefully shopping for that ‘perfect’ gift – only to find when you give it to the person their response is something less than what you’d hoped for. Some part of you may feel cheated by their lack of gratitude. Some part of you may feel like explaining to them how much time and effort you put into the gift. So, here is the paradox of truth and its inherent limitations. You see there is a difference between objective and subjective truth. The great nagual Don Juan shares the sorcerer’s explanation in Carlos Castaneda’s book ‘Tales of Power’: “We are inside a bubble. It is a bubble into which we are placed at the moment of our birth. At first the bubble is open, but then it begins to close until it has sealed us in. The bubble is our perception. We live inside that bubble all our lives. And what we witness on its round walls is our reflection. The thing reflected is our view of the world. That view is first a description which is given to us from the moment of our birth until all our attention is caught by it and the description becomes a view.” In giving others our gift of truth we are in essence just giving a view, one that, nevertheless, we have spent our whole life creating and then reinforcing, one that is simply based on perception. To let go of our fixed view of the world and embrace the mystery of life

is one of the greatest challenges we can face but paradoxically one of the most rewarding. “It’s the best possible time to be alive, when almost everything you thought you knew is wrong.” [‘Arcadia’, Tom Stoppard] As human beings we are growth seeking. We strive to expand on all levels – when we don’t we get stuck in the mire of the past and obsess about who is right and who is wrong. We go to war with others because they have different beliefs from us. We hang our hat on the hook of judgement and work hardest to protect what we have for fear of loss. To ascend to a greater way of being requires us to open up our bubble. Think about it from the past/present/ future perspective. All of your stories about how the world works, who you are and your place in it are based on the past. When confronted by a conflicting view of the world you will instinctively point to all of the ‘evidence’ that has arisen from past events. You will naturally then come to the conclusion that you are right and ‘they’ are wrong. End of story. End of expansion. A commitment to speak truth can be made from the perspective of, “I’m going to tell you my truth – fully expecting that you will then realise how completely WRONG you are and adopt my point of view instead.” Or it can be made from the perspective of, “I’ve surrendered to the mystery of the Universe. I embrace the ideal of speaking my truth. However I accept that my viewpoint is just one of many and I am committed to expansive growth.” See the difference? Values, ideals, visions and dreams live in the future. We aspire to live them and, MOST importantly, we can’t get to them by striving to live in certainty. Of course, here’s another paradox. You see we are hard-wired to seek

certainty. Our brains are self-organising, patterning systems that perpetually try to make our lives easier by identifying patterns and then re-enacting stored behaviours. Faced with a new piece of information (maybe even right now) your super computer of a brain switches into gear and starts madly searching its memory banks to find anything that it has seen, heard, read or experienced before that will help it to make sense of what it is experiencing now and place it in the correct box. Naturally this limits us to a fixed view of the world based on past experience – which is EXACTLY what we don’t want when trying to be expansive. Can we even see new possibilities then? Scientists have experimented with kittens to see how their perception changes when inputs are limited early in life. They placed kittens in an environment where they were no horizontal lines. Months later the kittens were still unable to perceive horizontal lines in their environment even when exposed to them. It is also well tested that the human brain fills in ‘blind spots’ by speculating and then projecting what it thinks should be perceived in those areas. Note that I say ‘it’ because it is not a conscious action.

(No the image is not moving... Your brain just thinks it is – see Akiyoshi’s Kitaoka’s other work http://www.ritsumei. ac.jp/~akitaoka/index-e.html) So, back to the weird and wonderful limitations of truth. Yes – truth is the greatest gift you can give to another. However, you must have a commitment to emotional and spiritual expansion and an acceptance that your truth may not be the same as my truth. You might also like to embrace the notion that the world is a mystery – one that we should never stop trying to understand, but a task that we should never expect to accomplish. An open heart. An open mind. A willingness to listen. An absence of judgement. A spirit of adventure and exploration. And the best bit is – you can’t work it out from where you are right now! “Reality is just an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” [Albert Einstein] What sort of amazing world can you imagine? In peace and love always.

From the frying pan into the fire – chemical pesticides and food irradiation by Andre Leu

When I read the Organic Federation of Australia’s newsletter on 31st January this year, I was blown away by the ill effects that most of us expose ourselves to by eating commercially produced fruit and veg. In particular, unborn and newborn children, having such a small body, are getting a much higher dose per gram. The good news – no, the absolutely wonderful news – is that studies have shown that children who change to an organic diet excrete some of the toxins within just five days! While it is important for you to read this article, you can, like me, simply skim over terms and names of chemicals that are unknown to you. The article still makes sense – perfect sense – and arms you with information you may want to utilise – even if all you can do at this stage is to grow silver beet from your flowerpots! Ed. T h e APVMA (Aust r a l i a n Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority), the main regulatory authority for pesticides, has put a temporary ban on treating some fruits with dimethoate, a highly toxic pesticide used as a control measure for fruit flies. Most fruits are still treated with this and other toxic chemicals. The concern over the loss of dimethoate has resulted in pressure on the regulators to allow more foods to be treated with ionising radiation from gamma rays sourced using radioactive cobalt. This is a classic case of out of the frying pan and into the fire. There are numerous non chemical, non-toxic methods to treat fruit to stop the spread of fruit flies. Di m e t hoat e Dimethoate is used to control fruit flies in fruits. It is a systemic poison. This means that all of the flesh inside the fruit will contain the poison. It cannot be washed or peeled off. In the case of fruit flies, the poison has to be strong enough to last at least 14 days so that if any eggs hatch inside the fruit, there is enough active poison to kill the larvae. Dimethoate is an organophosphate pesticide. This class of toxins were first developed as nerve poisons for warfare on humans. They act on the nervous system by destroying a key ensyme needed for the orderly functioning of the nervous system. They are highly reactive and also damage a range of other structures including the lining of nerve cells and DNA.

Organophosphates are touted as quickly biodegradable and therefore much better than organochlorines such as DDT and Dieldrin. This misinformation needs to be corrected. Most organophosphates degrade by oxidation, and this usually results in greater toxicity. In the case of dimethoate it degrades into omethoate which, according to the US EPA, is 12 times more toxic. Omethoate is used in Australia to treat foods. However it is not allowed to be used in the USA. The USA EPA has classed dimethoate as a probable human carcinogen based on a mix of studies, several of which found cancers in the test animals. Similarly some of the long-term tests have found evidence of ‘teratogenicity’ (birth defects) and ‘mutagenicity’, which is regarded as the precursor to causing cancers and birth defects and other damage to cell structures. The main concerns are long-term exposure to small amounts especially for children, the newborn and for the foetus. The review of dimethoate conducted by the USA EPA found that the: “Risk from aggregate dietary exposure on an acute basis occupies 460% of the aPAD [Acute Population Adjusted Dose] for the most highly exposed subgroup, infants less than one year of age.” This means infants are exposed to levels that are more than four and a half times higher than the dose that is considered unsafe. The Australian review of dimethoate is based on the toxicology methodologies used by the World Health Organization (WHO). These methodologies are constantly criticised as being out of date and no longer valid. They do not adequately factor in the large body of peerreviewed science around constant exposure to low doses, the cocktails of chemicals found in foods, endocrine disruption and most importantly the levels of exposure for the sensitive sections of the population such as children, the elderly and the chronically ill. These deficiencies in the standard methodologies for testing the safety of pesticides were clearly stated in the US President’s Cancer Panel Report in 2010. See link in HTML version of this article on LivingNow’s website. The majority of people get most of their exposure to pesticides from foods, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. The good news is that organophosphates are excreted from the urine in about four to five days. Two studies show that

children who start eating organic fruits and vegetable have no urinary traces of organophosphates after five days, compared to constant exposure to these residues if they eat conventional fruits and vegetables every day. Fo od i r r a di at ion The issue of losing chemical treatments for the trade in fresh fruits and vegetables is resulting in a push by countries like the USA and Australia to allow our food supply to be treated with ionising radiation. Ionising radiation (x-rays, gamma rays, etc.) is different from the radiation from sunlight, radio waves, and microwaves. Ionising radiation is characterised by its ability to change the sub-atomic structure of atoms by displacing electrons. The electrons are literally blown out of the atoms. These dramatic changes to the electronic stability of atoms affect the stability of molecules in irradiated food, resulting in numerous new, largely untested, compounds. Many of these compounds such as 2-ACBs do not occur naturally. Studies in 1990 have linked these compounds to colon cancer promotion and genetic damage in rats and genetic damage in human cells. The proponents of food irradiation state that it is safer than using preservatives or pesticides to kill pests and diseases in food. This not true as the unique radiolytic compounds, benzenes, ketones and free radicals created by food irradiation adversely affect significant areas of the human body. These effects are similar to those caused by pesticides and preservatives in our food. Research is showing that these reactive compounds damage amino acids, DNA, proteins and hormones in the bodies of people who consume it and are linked to: • Cancer • Birth defects • Auto-immune disease (asthma, diabetes arthritis etc) • Hormone imbalances • Immune system weaknesses • Nervous system disorders (Parkinson’s, epilepsy, ADD, depression, etc.) Currently many of the herbs and dried fruits imported into Australia are irradiated. These are supposed to be labelled. However our regulatory authorities are not rigorously enforcing

this. Recently Food Standard Australia and New Zealand approved the use of irradiation for tropical fruits. Several years ago approval was given for the importation irradiated genetically modified papayas from Hawaii into Australia. So far none have arrived. Another major concern is that most of the irradiation treatment factories use radioactive isotopes that cannot be disposed of safely. These ‘spent nuclear wastes’ could fall into the wrong hands and could be used by terrorists to make dirty bombs that would make areas uninhabitable for generations. We need to actively oppose any industry that tries to legitimise the use of the highly dangerous products of the world’s nuclear industry. After 50 years of promises of cheap unlimited energy, this industry has failed to deliver any unique benefits to human society and instead is leaving a disastrous toxic legacy for millions of years. Fukushima is the latest example. The benefits and safety claims of food irradiation seem to be of the same deceptive quality as the claims of unlimited cheap energy and the safe disposal of nuclear wastes. There is no need for food irradiation. Hygienic food handling and a variety of non-toxic pest disinfestation techniques can be used in every instance to replace this dangerous technology. For more info on food irradiation there are links on the HTML version of this article on LivingNow’s website. Non -tox ic a lt e r nat i v e s There is no need treat fruits with toxic chemicals or irradiation because numerous non-chemical alternatives exist. While processes vary depending on product, region, and desired outcome, some of the technologies currently in use include: Whole of systems approach This requires an orchard management system that involves fruit fly baits, traps, removal of all fallen and over-ripe fruit, as well as having a harvest maturity index from fruits. Many fruits such as bananas and papaya can be picked at a green stage when they are not hosts for fruit flies. They will ripen at the market. Non chemical de-contamination methods These include heat/steam vapour treatment, cold treatment, exclusion sones, modified atmospheres and vacuum packs.

Making up for lost time – a mother and son story by James May

I t’s always daun t ing going back to Sydney to catch up with my mother. Partly because I came so unstuck in that town but also because our relationship was so hostile for years. We’ve always been close even though we don’t spend much time together. We care deeply for each other but we were never able to express it. Now she’s almost seventy and I’m in my thirties, we’re finally starting to enjoy each other’s company. I have a love/hate relationship with Sydney. It’s the place where I spent most of my twenties; an emotional minefield of self-discovery. It’s the place where I threw myself into subcultures and sharehouses, wiped myself out and almost never came back. I didn’t have much self-esteem back then. I didn’t have a clue what to do with my life – the future scared the shit out of me. Everyone I knew was busy playing the tortured soul or the social misfit. It was a time of soaring highs and abysmal lows – the freedom of youth punctuated with addiction, chronic anxiety and depression. My mother spent years battling the grog. She got mixed up with blokes who put her down and kicked her round. She was kind and sensitive but it was hard to tell after all those years of alcoholism and domestic violence. I have few sober memories of my mother. She always had a drink in one hand and a smoke in the other, trembling like crazy, trying to calm down. She spent most of my childhood tucked away at home, drinking the days away, wishing life were different. She had very few friends aside from the odd drinking buddy and little contact with anyone else. Most of the time she was full of hostility for the world. When she drank she seemed possessed – her personality changed. I could hardly recognise her. I knew she was a good person deep down; full of compassion, creativity, potential. She was highly intelligent, deeply thoughtful. She was a great writer with

14 may 2012

a vivid imagination. I thought she was beautiful – even when she was hungover and depressed. But the world trampled all over her and she never got back up. We were close when I was a kid. I spent more time with her than anyone. I was a ‘mummy’s boy.’ We did the shopping together and went for long walks to fancy neighbourhoods with the kind of homes we could only dream of living in. We talked about running away but we never did. We spent most of the time stuck in the house. I wagged school and sat by her feet drawing pictures while she drank beer and sang along to the radio. She’d tell me things I probably shouldn’t have heard at that age, and rant and rave about the injustice of the world. Then she’d pass out in her chair like a rag doll. We had shocking fights too. I ran off in the supermarket, and threw a mug of cold coffee at her. I called her every foul name under the sun and told her I hated her guts. She’d leave the house and tell me she was never coming back. She’d get on the phone and say she was calling welfare to take me away. It took me years to realise she was just pretending; there was no one on the other end of the line. I only wanted the best for her. I wanted her to be happy. I wanted her to find a decent bloke with a good job and a nice home, someone who treated her right. I wanted her to get sober because I liked who she was in those rare moments when she had nothing to drink and all those lovely qualities came shining through. We were quite estranged when I left home. There were often phone calls – angry calls late at night; one bizarre rant after another, sobs and senseless words, going over the past like a broken record. I listened patiently. I encouraged her. I tried to boost her self-esteem but nothing worked. I knew she was treading water but I didn’t have much energy left. I was too messed up with my own addictions

by then – lost in my own little world. .......... Going back to Sydney is special in more ways than one. I was scared to return for a long time – scared of running into old faces, scared of old memories coming back to haunt me. I didn’t want to be reminded how messed up I was. But I had to make peace with the place – I had to make peace with her. That town affected me like no other. It lifted me up and dumped me on my arse. It’s a beautiful place though. It feels so vast and vibrant and connected to the world. You can sit on a bus and soak up the languages of people from across the globe. I love the landscape; the harbour, the pristine beaches, the rolling hills. I love the dilapidated inner city terraces, the secret alleys my friends and I used to explore on sleepless nights. I love the street life. It can be sad and distressing but it’s gritty and real and colourful. I love spending time in Sydney – now I’m a different person. Things are different with my mother as well. She’s a mature-aged woman. She is sober, she has found peace. We’re both more level-headed, optimistic, we’re both more ‘in the world’. We’ve let go of a lot of negativity and worked through the painful emotions that divided us. We’ve wiped the slate clean. We’re making up for lost time. There’s a mutual trust, a respect. We’re friends, I guess. We meet for lunch, go for a ferry ride on the harbour or a stroll along the beach. After all those years cooped up with anxiety, we just wanna get out there and live. It’s a relief to see we’re both in a good place; we’re both still on track. It feels like we’re connected, we can communicate, we finally ‘get each other’. That feeling is always there, even though we live a thousand miles apart. On my last night in Sydney we did something neither of us had done before – we went to a show at the opera house.

It was a balmy night and mum had spent the entire day shopping for a new outfit. She was full of beans, like a kid going to meet her favourite celebrity. She hopped off the bus at Circular Quay in a pair of sassy heels, shiny gold pants and a classy top. She was a little unsteady on her feet but she looked great – the best I’d ever seen. It was a buzz for both of us – walking along the harbour past mobs of well-heeled theatre-goers, dressed up to the nines. It was a world away from what we once knew. We probably felt a little out of our depth, but we didn’t show it. We put our insecurities aside and joined a table of eight strangers in the audience. The show was a hoot – an all-male cabaret that rocked our world with song and dance, circus and acrobatics. We were both in stitches, clapping and cheering. The atmosphere was electric – guys in tight pants and tattoos, spinning hoola-hoops and dangling from ropes off the ceiling. It was crude, fun and fabulous. We were a little disappointed when it was over, but Mum was keen to pop outside for a smoke. The harbour was more stunning than ever under the cover of darkness. The ferries glided silently into the dock, lights shimmered on the water’s surface. The harbour bridge was auspicious in the background. It was a beauty I’d hardly noticed when I lived there. We finished off the night at a fancy seafood restaurant. It started raining and we had to duck inside but it was refreshing after all the humidity. We sat at the table laughing like two old friends reading over the menu, patting ourselves dry. We splashed out on meals that were over thirty bucks and a flute of classy champagne. The waiter forgot our side plates and napkins and the food was pretty ordinary – mostly rice and pasta with barely any prawns or calamari in sight. It didn’t dampen our spirits though. We were more than a hundred bucks out of pocket but we were still on top of the world.

Mother love – the mother of mothers’ clubs by Alison Burton W h en m y f i r st child was born I became a mother. It sounds obvious really, but to be honest I remember being surprised by the magnitude of the occasion. Labour was a transition into a whole new dimension. It actually felt like an initiation. Luckily enough the process of giving birth went naturally and relatively quickly for me. What threw me though was that all of a sudden in the time span of a few hours I changed into a mother. I was, instantly, a bonafide member of an enormous group of people who were also mothers. I felt honoured and overwhelmed at the same time. I was honoured to become a member of the group and overwhelmed by the responsibility I now had for another life. I had taken part in the creation of this tiny bundle in my arms and now I had to learn how to take care of her and keep her safe. I fell in love with my newborn baby girl in an instant. That happened all by itself. What I didn’t anticipate was the downside of that love. Some time later I heard a comment that after having a baby it was like “The protective coating had been peeled away from my heart and the world could really hurt me now.” That describes how I felt exactly. I suddenly felt connected to every other mother on the planet combined with the unbelievably powerful instinct to keep my baby safe. I remember on day 5 after the birth I was sitting up in bed having a cup of tea, reading the morning paper. There had been an earthquake in India and hundreds of people had been killed. Suddenly I thought of all the mothers that had lost their children in that earthquake and all the children who had lost their mothers. It was almost as if I felt the anguish of every one of them. I was grief-stricken. My heart was wide open to the suffering in the world and I wanted to fix all of it. This was mother

love – raw and powerful. The intensity was amazing and the desire to make the world a better, safer place was extraordinary. Gradually I pulled myself together. I put that protective coating back around my heart, making sure I included my own baby girl. I could cope with loving her although it was scary. I shut out other mothers and their children. Surely I couldn’t be expected to take responsibility for them all! I regained my boundaries to keep my sanity and to protect my heart. Thinking back now on that powerful experience, I actually believe that the world would benefit enormously from a huge dose of mother love. Imagine what might change

on the planet if every mother felt love for every child; if every mother realised that she was connected to every other mother. One big club. The mother of mothers’ clubs! Imagine if each mother re-ignited that protective instinct and was determined to keep every child on the planet safe. Expanding mother love globally, rather than reducing it to your own little nuclear family, has the potential to create powerful change. What if we really cared about the suffering in the world? Could we do that and still function? Or would we go crazy? The definition of compassion is: the desire to alleviate suffering. Just think how things would change

if every mother could safely allow herself to feel compassion for all those African children orphaned by AIDS, or the babies drinking polluted water, or dying of starvation. What if we really let our hearts acknowledge the poverty, inhumanity and violence in the world? What if we stopped turning a blind eye to avoid the horror of it all? Imagine the changes we would create. I say bring on more mother love. Whether you are a mother or not, whether you are a man or a woman, the world currently needs us to open our hearts and feel what’s going on – not just at an intellectual level but at a heart and soul level. For all the talk about bringing love, peace and harmony to the planet, we actually need to feel the downside of love first. Maybe the saying, “No pain, no gain”, doesn’t just apply to going to the gym. By becoming a mother I realised that to really love is painful. Until every single human being on the planet is living in love, peace and harmony we need to feel compassion. Maybe we need to mobilise the energy that’s awakened when something comes between a mother and her child. We need a big dose of that super human energy that can lift a car or move a mountain. Why not experiment a little. When you see suffering, let yourself feel compassion. Don’t switch off because it’s someone else’s child, or someone who speaks another language, or practices a different religion or culture. Maybe they live on the other side of the globe – so it’s easier to disconnect. Maybe they live next door and you think it’s none of your business. Healing suffering in the world needs to be everyone’s business. We may not all be mothers but, we are all someone’s child and every single one of us deserves a safe and happy life. Bubs in bamboo – an interview with Amanda Callaghan, owner of eco baby wear label, babyjo by Melisa Gray-Ward

W h e n t h i n k i ng ba m bo o, one instantly imagines happy pandas feasting on the young green shoots. But bamboo isn’t only panda food. Long used in Asia to create paper, bamboo has many practical uses and is increasingly utilised to produce ecofriendly fabric for clothes. There are plenty of reasons why bamboo is in demand – it’s a sustainable, renewal resource that can be produced with low environment impact; it’s not reliant like other plants on pesticides and herbicides for survival; and it’s biodegradable so can be easily returned to the earth. As a fabric it’s highly durable, while also soft and smooth – a winning combination for any garment, but especially babywear, which is why you find the bamboo-loving panda on the logo of Australian eco-friendly baby wear label, babyjo. Owner and eco-friendly mama Amanda Callaghan knows the importance of bamboo and uses this fabric, along with organic cotton, in all babyjo garments. Amanda is committed to ethical, healthy living, and these values are reflected in the babyjo brand. Based in the Blue Mountains, a bevy of local contractors form the extended team; a local newborn baby was even the subject of a recent photo shoot. LivingNow caught up with Amanda to find out why this fibre is so baby friendly and what it takes to produce garments with bamboo. Rewind to the beginning… How did babyjo come to be? After working for several years in my organic online baby store I realised I wanted to develop and promote my own sustainable baby brand. Through research I found babyjo as a business for sale. After speaking with the [previous] owner we realised we were both on the same page. She was moving in another direction, and the values of babyjo aligned perfectly with mine – not to mention that my 14-month-old son is also called Jo! We both felt it was meant to be. Originally babyjo was created to cater for babies who had eczema-prone skin, and bamboo was the perfect solution due to its naturally therapeutic properties. What kind of pieces do babyjo offer? The babyjo range has wonderful classic pieces such as the kimono-style baby rompers and divine newborn bamboo swaddle blankets and beanies. I have now expanded on the current range and I am excited about its future.

Are new babyjo products released as part of a seasonal collection or do you follow a different model? The biggest driver for me is ethical sustainability. It is my belief that seasonal ranges just for the sake of fashion are not in alignment with ethical sustainability. In a bid to reduce the impact of traditional consumerism and production, babyjo has chosen to have high quality, classic pieces that remain beautiful in years to come. Supporting this will be ranges that are inspired by needs, interests and local artists. Babyjo will have

the much loved bamboo range and a new fair trade organic cotton range to complement our ethos of creating beautiful, sustainable clothing that is made with love. That’s exciting! When will the free trade garments be available? The range is due midyear. This is a really exciting step for me personally as it is such a fantastic way to be of service in my business. It has always been a dream of mine to create ethical work opportunities in developing countries.

Currently babyjo products are extensively made from organic bamboo fibre. What makes bamboo so special? Bamboo makes gorgeous fabric because it is naturally antibacterial, odour-resistant, highly breathable, biodegradable and super soft. In order to meet the wash and wear demands of babies, we added organic cotton into the fabric mix, as bamboo on its own is very delicate. Since having children, my passion has been organic baby products – so discovering the benefits of bamboo was very enlightening. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on Earth. Therefore it’s a highly renewable resource. Is bamboo fabric accessible for manufacturing in Australia, or do you need to source it overseas? Although bamboo is now being farmed in Australia (on a small scale compared to China), unfortunately there is currently no local bamboo fibre production available for us to utilise. I sincerely hope to see this change soon so we can have a fully self-sustaining bamboo manufacturing industry in Australia. For manufacturing we have sourced a facility in China that employs very high work safety and environmental standards, and that uses effective waste water treatments to ensure that additives used in the process do not end up in the surrounding environment. All our bamboo garments are made from 100% organically grown bamboo farms. The fair trade will use 100% organic cotton.

“It is never too late to be what you might have been”

I have always been inspired by these words by English novelist, George Eliot. This inspired me because I have always wanted to make a difference and love what I am doing in the process. Before my organic baby journey, I was earning a large income in a soulless job, paying the bills, and going home feeling defeated, exhausted and broken. One day I decided to just stop. This left me with no house, no car, and no relationship. It was in this moment of self-discovery, that I was born. This birth resulted in a new way of seeing, a new way of being and a new belief in what was real for me. Three key things that I have learnt are: 1. Self-love is everything. If you cannot find what makes you feel loved and happy, then you are not living the life you were born to live 2. Open your eyes to what is in your life now. Let go of anything and everyone who does not support you to feel happy and inspired. 3. Have the courage to BE YOU, and let life happily support you!

What excites you most about having your own label? Touch is vital to a newborn. I believe that what they first wear is so important. When my children were born, I chose only products made by businesses that I felt were ‘conscious’. To me, that meant the products were made with the baby’s health, comfort and soul in mind – and made with love. I am blessed to be returning this love. For me, every time I create a new range I am doing exactly this. There must be some challenges too? The greatest challenge for me at the moment is aligning my vision of ethical and fair trade practices into the production cycle, which I mostly have no control over. Currently China is the only place to source bamboo textiles, but they have no Fair Trade agreements in place. What I have done is source the best factory I can, and expanded the range with other eco textiles.

Can you change your brain by thinking differently? by Joe Dispenza, D.C. C u r r en t n eu ro -sc i en t i f ic theory tells us that the brain is organised to reflect everything we know in our environment. The different relationships with people we have met, the variety of things we own and are familiar with, the cumulative places we have visited and have lived in, and the myriad of experiences we have embraced throughout our years are all configured in the soft plastic tissues of the brain. Even the vast array of actions and behaviours that we’ve repeatedly performed throughout our lifetime is also tattooed in the intricate folds of our gray matter. For the most part, our brain is equal to our environment. In a normal day, as we respond to familiar people, as we encounter common things in known places at predictable times, and as we experience recurring conditions in our personal world, we will more than likely think and behave in automatic memorised ways. To change, then, is to think and act greater than our present circumstances. It is to think greater than our environment. We have been told that our brains are essentially hardwired with unchangeable circuitry – that we possess or, better put, are possessed by a kind of neurorigidity that is reflected in the type of inflexible and habitual behaviour we often see exhibited. The truth is that we are marvels of flexibility, adaptability, and a neuroplasticity that allows us to reformulate and re-pattern our neural connections to produce the kind of behaviours that we want. We have far more power to alter our own brains, our behaviours, our personalities, and ultimately our reality than previously thought possible. Consider those individuals in history who have risen above their present circumstances, stood up to the onslaught of reality – as it presented itself to them, and made significant changes. For example, the Civil Rights Movement would not have had its far-reaching effects if someone like Martin Luther King, Jr., had not, despite all the evidence around him (Jim Crow laws, separate but equal accommodations, snarling attack dogs, and powerful fire hoses), believed in the possibility of another reality. Though Dr. King phrased it in his famous speech as a ‘dream’, what he was really promoting and living was a better world where everyone was equal. How was he able to do that? Simply put, he saw, felt, heard, lived and breathed a different reality in his mind from most other people at that time. It was the power of his vision that convinced millions of the justness of his cause. The world has changed because of his ability to think and act greater than conventional beliefs. Not only did King consistently keep his dream alive in his mind, he lived his life as if his dream was already unfolding. The idea was so alive in his mind that there was

a good possibility that his brain “looked as if the experience had already happened”. Neuroscience has proven that we can change our brains just by thinking differently. Through the concept of mental rehearsal (to repeatedly imagine performing an action), the circuits in our brains can reorganise themselves to reflect our very intentions. In one study, people who mentally rehearsed one-handed finger exercises two hours a day for five days demonstrated the same brain changes as

mind and body were united to the same cause. In other words, he did not think one thing and then behave contrary to his intentions. His thoughts and actions were completely aligned to the same outcome. This is not a bad working definition for true leadership. When we can focus our mind on a desired goal and then discipline the body to consistently act in alignment with that end, we are demonstrating greatness. We are literally living in the future, and our body will begin to change in order to prepare us

people who physically performed the same movements.1 To put this into perspective, when we are truly focused and singleminded, the brain does not distinguish between the internal world of the mind and the external environment. This type of internal processing allows us to become so involved in our dreams and internal representations that the brain will modify its wiring without having had experienced the actual event. When we change our minds independent of environmental cues and then steadfastly insist on an ideal with sustained concentration, the brain will be ahead of the actual external experience. In other words, the brain will function as if the experience has already happened. As we embrace the very circumstances that challenge our mind, we will have put the appropriate circuits in place to allow us to behave consistently with our intentions. Simply said, the hardware will have been installed so that we can handle the challenge. When we change our mind, our brain changes, and when we change our brain, our mind changes. What made Dr. King—or any great leader, for that matter—unique was that his

for the new experience. In one study, men who mentally rehearsed doing bicep curls with dumbbells for a short period of time every day showed (on the average) a 13 percent increase in muscle size without ever touching the weights. Their bodies changed to match their intentions.2. So when the time comes to demonstrate a vision contrary to the environmental conditions at hand, it is quite possible for us to be already prepared to think and act, with a conviction that is steadfast and unwavering. In fact, the more we think about or formulate an image of our behaviour in a future event, the easier it will be for us to execute a new way of being because the mind and body are unified to that end. So what is it then that talks us out of true change? The answer is: our feelings and our emotions. Feelings and emotions are the end-products of an experience. When we are in the midst of any experience, all of our five senses are gathering sensory data and a rush of information is sent back to the brain through those five different pathways. As this occurs, gangs of neurons will string into place and organise themselves to reflect that event. The moment that these jungles of

nerve cells become patterned into networks, they will fire into place and release chemicals. Those chemicals that are released are called emotions. Emotions and feelings, then, are neurochemical memories of past events. We can remember experiences better when we can recall how they felt. For example, do you remember where you were on 9/11? You probably can clearly recall where you were that day, at that exact time, because you can remember the novel feeling that woke you up enough to pay full attention. More than likely, it was a different feeling from one you’d had in a long time. Back to the concept of change. If emotions brand experiences into long-term memory, then when we are faced with current obstacles in our life that require thinking and acting in new ways, and we use familiar feelings as a barometer for change, we will most certainly talk ourselves out of our ideal. Think about this. Our feelings reflect the past. However, to change is to abandon past ways of thinking, acting and feeling so that we can move into the future with a new outcome. To change is to think (and act) greater than how we feel. Emotions like fear, worry, frustration, greed, and self-importance are familiar feelings that, even in the midst of transformation, if we decide to succumb to, will surely point us in the wrong direction. Can we then begin to contemplate change for ourselves? To learn to think independently of the barrage of environmental stimuli is a skill that, when properly executed, will change the brain, the mind, and the body to prepare us for the future. The art of self-reflection may seem as if it is dying in a technological culture that saturates us with so much information that we become addicted to the external world to stimulate our own thinking. How free are we? Most are lost without the thrill of entertainment, text messaging, phone calls, and the internet. To make the time to meditate, to plan our future, to mentally rehearse the behaviours we want to change and to think about new ways of being will surely advance us beyond our predictable genetic destiny.

Conscious conception tips to help you become pregnant by Deborah Swann Mo st of us have been raised to believe in ourselves as just physical beings living in a purely physical world, and that our capacity to conceive is dependent on our body ‘working properly’ or not. However the miracle of conception and birthing a child is testament to the almost magical complexity of our body’s functioning – and that magic comes from the fact that we are much, much, more than just our physical selves. You may wish to conceive consciously or be having difficulty conceiving. Either way each situation holds the possibility of growth in conscious awareness of yourself and the soul who chooses to incarnate through you. So how do we become more conscious of ourselves in the journey towards pregnancy and motherhood? Well we can work on many levels at once. In this article we will explore some of these levels in all aspects of our being – body, mind and spirit – that may create difficulties in conceiving but which can be released.

F i r st le t ’s lo ok at ways t o be com e h e a lt h i e r 1. What we eat is a great place to begin. Are we eating foods that contain all the nutrients required for optimal health and fertility? Statistics tell us 1 in 5 couples are infertile and the cause is almost 50/50 for men and women. It takes 3-4 months to create healthy new eggs for women and 2-3 months to create a healthy new batch of sperm for men. So beginning to eat consciously several months prior to conception is a great start for your baby’s health. 2. Lifestyle factors also impact negatively on the possibility of healthy conception. Alcohol, cigarette smoking, and chemicals in foods are all factors that affect egg and sperm health, hormonal balance and overall health and well-being. Exercise is important for physical health, emotional balance and stress release. 3. Stress is a major factor in our overall health, vitality and enjoyment of life. It is also proven to inhibit sexual function and enjoyment and create contraction in our body thus restricting blood flow and placing us in a state of shutdown. Practices such as yoga, tai chi, meditation, conscious

breathing, walks in nature, exercise and fun with friends all go a long way toward reducing stress; and becoming more conscious in daily life beginning with foods, lifestyle, exercise and reducing stress all help prepare us for conscious, healthy conception and pregnancy. Herbal remedies, homoeopathics, acupuncture, massage, aromatherapy and other natural therapies can greatly assist in bringing us back into balance and enhancing fertility as well as balancing our hormonal cycle.

Be yon d t h e p h ysic a l How extraordinary it is that as a soul we travel through time and space, gathering experiences, learning and growing as we go. I have found in my practice that all we have experienced is recorded and imprinted in our soul’s memory bank and distributed throughout our subtle bodies and energy field including our chakras. This information makes up a large part of our subconscious. We are told our conscious self makes up 10% and our subconscious self makes up the other 90%. The vastness of that 90% makes sense when we include all that our soul brings with it, the experiences and beliefs we carry from our family line, and our childhood memories that are all added to the subconscious realm of our memory banks. These memories can carry beliefs that block healthy conception. By tapping into,

understanding and releasing these memories and associated beliefs, we dissolve barriers blocking healthy and positive conception. The subconscious provides us with a lot of material to work with outside the level of our conscious awareness and physical reality in our inspiring journey towards consciousness conception! C r e at i v e t o ol s for us t o use The information held within our subconscious is also available to us when

we develop our innate ability to tune into and read the more subtle messages arising within us. You may be surprised and delighted with what comes when you create a space in your life which is solely for you, where you have the freedom to reflect; to write, draw or paint what comes to mind, without censorship. Give yourself at least 30 minutes a day to do this and enjoy. As well as healing and a growth in awareness, you may find yourself inspired and spontaneously tapping into the vast expanse of creativity that also lies within the 90% of your subconscious. The good news is that there’s lots of positive stuff there as well as the beliefs and memories we want to release. S om e i ssu e s a r e h a r de r t o a ddr e ss How conscious and aware are you of your own fears and motivations? Very often we are burdened by secret fears, anxieties and

stresses that appear to come from nowhere – and these feelings can get in the way of conception. In addition, strong emotions or difficulties in conceiving can seem overwhelming, compounding the issue. In my experience there is always a reason for the feelings, blocks and imbalances we face in our lives. If you feel this is possibly a factor for you, energy healing is a wonderful tool to assist us to release these difficulties including blocks to healthy conscious conception. Con n e c t w i t h you r c h i ld -t o -be The highest part of our mind (or being) is our super-conscious. It makes up a vast reservoir of our potential, beyond our wildest imaginings. It is the realm of intuition, inspired thinking and creativity, miracles, healing, compassion and love. As we align with this higher part of ourselves, we begin to feel more connected and able to trust what we pick up at the level of the subtle realms. With time and practice we begin to trust ourselves and follow our ‘hunches’ or gut feelings, no matter how crazy they may seem to anyone else. It is through our alignment to this super-conscious part of ourselves that we feel connected – to ourselves, to one another, our planet and inevitably the soul of our future child. There is no reason we can’t make this connection, other than our conditioning and beliefs, and our lack of practice in learning to tune in and trust ourselves. Bonding is an essential and very important part of parenthood. By connecting with our future child prior to conception, we bond at the very deepest level thus paving the way for a deep heart connection between parent and child. Again a great way to play with this is through stream of consciousness writing, drawing or painting. Have fun writing a letter to your child-to-be and writing one back from the child. Have fun painting or drawing a picture of the soul in your energy field, or a picture of him/her as a young child. Make it up; it doesn’t matter – again you may be surprised with what comes. Remember the potential of your superconscious self is way beyond your wildest imaginings. As you enter the joy of play you step into the magic of the present moment – our most conscious place to be. How wonderful it is that by being actively involved in the process of conscious conception, through the balancing of body, mind and spirit, we become more whole within ourselves. Love yourself, have fun, and above all enjoy the journey.

two days, couldn’t eat or drink and became unresponsive to medication. There was a moment in which I was sure I was done for, but amazingly enough, rather than being filled with panic, I felt a sense of peace. In that moment the world seemed to still and I experienced the notion that my body is really just a vehicle for my spirit. It’s a feeling I’ve never forgotten. Do you have a feeling that there is an energy greater than you, something that might have all the answers? I think so. I would not limit it to the common notion of ‘God’. I think humans probably don’t have the capacity to fathom the full gravitas of this energy which is why labels are attached such as giving ‘God’ a gender, or an agenda, ie, smiting the wicked. If this ‘something’ has all the answers then I’m inclined to believe it is much bigger than these labels or anything we can conceive of. I’m also inclined to believe that all things in life are connected – humans, trees, animals, the universe… so I believe if this ‘something’ exists than we have a piece of it in all of us. What do you think about goal setting? I think it’s very important to write things down. I seem to get more things done when I have a list. That’s probably because my memory is shocking! At the same time I do encounter moments in life where I’m not sure where I’m going or what I want. I think it’s okay to let things figure themselves out in these cases.

What’s the worst thing that has ever happened to you and how did that affect you? This might seem like I’m dodging the question but I really don’t believe in labelling events in my life as ‘bad’. I try to emphasise the lessons learnt as well as take ownership of the part I might have played. I think my biggest mistakes so far have involved me knowingly or unknowingly placing my power and happiness in others’ hands. I did not have control of my life or happiness. Essentially I let others become the masters of my destiny. As a result I became a shadow of myself.

N i ya m a Bamboo Facial Ex foliant This divine scrub uses fine grains of bamboo to gently exfoliate the skin, with organic calendula and petitgrain to soothe, regenerate and tone. This delicious product also contains organic pink mineral clay to draw out any additional impurities. I felt like I was using a cleanser, exfoliant and masque all in one, for the best home treatment I have had in a very long time. The scent, the texture and ingredients are faultless. My skin looked incredible as the bamboo effortlessly polished the skin leaving it radiant and refreshed without harsh abrasion or dryness. Bamboo is a great renewable resource – so it is perfect for our skin and the environment. Full marks!

Ém i n e nc e Blueberry Shimmer Body Lotion Handmade in Hungary using organically grown herbs, fruits, flowers, and vegetables, this body lotion has a decadent scent that refines and refreshes the skin with the goodness of antioxidant-rich blueberries and naturally exfoliating soy. My skin felt beautifully hydrated and perfumed with the natural minerals highlighting my skin for an incredible shimmering glow. My skin felt firm and lifted with this naturally enriching lotion. We adore the great healing action of blueberries, and when added to this vitamin-rich skin moisturiser, it results in a remarkable product. My tip is to lightly towel-dry after your shower or bath, leaving little droplets of water on the skin, and then rub on the lotion to finish the drying process. Magic! www.eminenceorganics.com.au J u r l iqu e Rosewater Balancing M ist After a scrub and masque my skin felt so fresh and clean, and the last thing I wanted to do was weigh it down with a moisturiser. So instead, I gave my face a good soaking with the Jurlique mist and I remembered that skin becomes dry due to loss of moisture, not oil – so it makes perfect sense to rehydrate with moisture to re-balance the skin. The aroma was intoxicating but the effect was biblical as my skin drank every last drop and felt incredibly hydrated all day. Misting is also a great way to set your makeup and to refresh and revive your skin throughout the day. Love it!

My mother always smelt like fresh pressed compact powder and her lips were ruby red. I remember her beauty routine so well and although it was simple it had such an impact and a lasting effect on me. With nine brothers and sisters she was always the best dressed in clothes she made herself, and she would rather die than be seen without her lipstick. Her complexion was powdered beige and her lips were perfectly bee stung in bold vibrant pinks and reds. However it was the finishing touch to her makeup

that always impressed me. Watching her intently in the bathroom as a young girl I was fascinated how two red circles of lipstick placed on her cheeks could eventually turn into such a beautiful hue of colour and gorgeous shiny texture that was such a perfect contrast to her matt powdered complexion. What a gem! So to all our mothers – may you be remembered this May 13th and every day for your beauty, inside and out. Madonna Melrose

W E A RE READY, waiting, anticipating. We all have our role to play in 2012 and beyond… Mine has been to create this book of 12 powerful images and channeled messages entitled “Portals for Mortals for 2012 and Beyond”. I now share it with you as a source of inspiration, awakening and self discovery. I am a visionary and intuitive artist. Loving intent and integrity live within all of my artwork. The 12 powerful energy portals (skylights) are intended to help activate new levels of deep personal insight, self awareness and a higher vibrational cosmic connection to love and all there is. Allow each image to transport you into other dimensional realms, by focusing on the various elements, symbols and writings. They are now accessible to all via my new book. “Portals for Mortals for 2012 and Beyond” is already available as an Ebook on Amazon.com and will soon be available for purchase in all good book shops. The book launch will be held at “Animal Dreaming” shop in Byron Bay.

A RE YOU SEEK I NG something greater? Are you aware that you are different and that you may just be the possibility you are searching for? This month’s tool from the Different Possibilities Team is: ‘How does it get any better than this?’ It is a question that opens up doors for you whether the situations are good, bad or ugly. Some of you may have heard of the idea that if you ask so shall you receive. This question allows you to receive more awareness in any area of your life. And it is easy to use! Perhaps things are not going so great for you or perhaps you have just won some money… it doesn’t matter what the situation is. Just ask this question and the whole of the universe begins to change things to show you a different possibility, something greater, something that you would never have thought of before.

Billabong Retreat Sydney On arriving at Billabong Retreat it is hard to believe that this magical pocket of nature is only 50 minutes to Sydney’s CBD as it feels a million miles away. As you approach you first notice the bellbirds in the towering gum trees with their distinctive ring and immediately the tension melts away and you know you have come to somewhere truly peaceful, a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The owner Paul greets us personally and makes us feel at home right away with a glass of cool rain water and the offer of teas and freshly made cake (sugar and gluten free of course and still delicious!) We check in to The Treehouse, a simple and tasteful cabin on stilts surrounded by pristine bush and nestling in the trees with a private balcony overlooking the large billabong. The views are divine – you could just sit here for two-days and feel refreshed! We also have our own immaculate ensuite bathroom and twin beds, which is perfect for two friends. They have a variety of accommodation including a quaint federation cottage, ensuite escarpment cabins and walk-in tents with proper beds and heating for those on a smaller budget. If you come by yourself they will either allocate you a same sex room buddy or for a little extra you can opt for your own room. The main retreat is centred around two circular yurt buildings made from beautiful natural timber with glass cupolas in the centre, the colours of the chakras. The afternoon sun streams down through these windows creating beautiful reflections on the practice room floor. My favourite feature is the large covered outdoor Bali style lounge area and with loungers, hammocks and funky Passaman chairs – no end to the places where you can relax. This covered deck is perched on an escarpment overlooking the large billabong and lotus garden – very zen indeed! Paul runs an introduction session and explains how he and his wife Tory bought the place a few years back after escaping the city and how he designed and built the whole retreat according to eco principles. There is solar energy, solar hot water, rainwater tanks and bio-pod waste water systems, but it feels and works just like a modern home. The rainwater tastes delicious. They even supply you with biodegradable shampoo, conditioner and body wash in each bathroom! We then learn about yoga, meditation and mindfulness with Paul sharing lots of

fascinating knowledge of the history of yoga and meditation and how this is blending into the current science of wellness. We learn how to move our consciousness to different places and little tricks and tools to still the mind and become aware of our sensations, breath and thoughts without becoming them. We also practise some simple flowing yoga postures, a ‘moving pranayama’, where we link the breath with the movement. At the end of the class any tensions that I arrived with have virtually gone! There are about 18 on our retreat, mostly women and with varying degrees of experience of yoga and meditation. Some have never practised before and many practise occasionally. Everyone is really friendly and it’s a very homely and welcoming environment. Paul gets the large outdoor fire going and we all sit around chatting and browsing

and by 9pm I was in bed and fell asleep to the gentle throbbing of the frogs. The second day included a beautiful flowing feminine yoga classes with yoga teacher Janice plus a fantastic Japanese tea ceremony ritual by Basia. Many guests had chosen an optional massage down in the waterside spa and after lunch there was a rostered siesta – that’s my kind of schedule! In the afternoon we practised yoga postures, a breathing practice with sound and some vedic chanting, and finished the day watching the movie, ‘What about Me’, in the onsite cinema, a fantastic multi-cultural film about the ego, featuring wisdom from elders from around the world. On the last day Paul reinforced the concept of personal practice and how this is the key to getting full benefit from yoga and meditation. He taught us a seven (yes only seven) minute practice with the belief that it

Dear Paul, On behalf of Bella and myself, I would like to thank you and your wife for the most amazing 3 days at your retreat. We found this experience to be both rewarding, unique and life changing. We both felt we left with the tools needed to change our lives and give us more respect for people and nature around us and also learn more about who we are. On a personal note, I thought I would just tag along with my girlfriend and see what happens but I found through yoga an inner peace and calm that I didn’t think was possible. I didn’t know I could actually slow my brain down from a million thoughts and just relax my mind and body. We both are doing yoga every day now and I find so many places to just put my head phones in and meditate. We feel happier, free and love that we are learning so much about ourselves through yoga. Once again thank you so much and we promise to come back soon. “Food was brilliant, and chefs were incredibly accommodating to dietary requirements - thank you!!” Dear Paul & Tory, Thank you so much for this fabulous weekend. As a first time for yoga, I really enjoyed discovering the connection with my body and mind. It was very beneficial for me to understand how to feel your body. You are definitely changing people’s life for a weekend, whether they want to carry on the learning into their lifestyle.

the many wellness books and magazines available. Dinner is incredible – a delicious vegetarian Mexican bean stew with corn chips, salsa, dips and a rainbow salad. You don’t have to worry about going hungry here – the food is plentiful, healthy and filling. Tory has designed all the menus and is passionate about the role wholefoods can play in our overall wellbeing. She sources all the fruit and vegetables from a nearby farm and over the weekend the chef Mignon creates a series of varied and tasty meals including curry, dahl, miso and all with delicious and healthy desserts! In the evening Paul taught a pranayama and meditation class followed by a yoga nidra

is better to get into the habit of doing a short daily practice than doing no daily practice at all. He taught it to us many times so we learnt it by heart and also sent us a copy afterwards so we could refer to it. It all makes perfect sense and I left Billabong Retreat not only with 16 new friends but a real desire and confidence in doing a daily practice for myself and creating a more peaceful and content mindset.

“We all throughly enjoyed our stay at Billabong Retreat. I had never done Yoga before, and my sister is a Yogi – we both loved all the classes during our 2 night stay. (There were other beginners on the retreat too.) The interior of the cottage was lovely, clean, comfy beds. If you wanted to, you could read a book all day on the balcony and enjoy the sounds of nature in the homely cottage. The food was scrumptious made with fresh local ingredients and well presented, divine! We were all asking for the recipes. We have been to Golden Door at the Hunter Valley, but Billabong Retreat came out on tops for myself and Yogi sister. We’ll be back, thank you.”

Honey hunting in Uganda I W EN T TO Uganda in 2005 to trade in honey after the call was put out by the Ugandan government wishing to export honey to EU countries. After visiting the country and finding a fledging industry I was impressed that this beautifully rich country would be able to develop a beekeeping community and create jobs for rural people who were generally very poor. What has happened over the past six years has been life changing – something I will try to relate to you over the next three issues of this publication. Mid 2006 I founded Malaika Honey to seek rural development through

beekeeping. For a long time I was working 6 or 7 days a week, 11 hours a day, travelling out to isolated communities teaching them beekeeping and harvesting honey, and riding back to Kampala on lorries and moving around the streets doing marketing and sales of our products. People came to know me well in the city, seeing me getting around on my “boda-boda” motorcycle – doing work that they rarely saw a white man do. I was given the Luganda name “Sebadukka” by some friends, which roughly translates as someone who moves fast and works hard. Out in the villages I was often stung by bees. The bees are very aggressive due to a tradition of “honeyhunting” and one time I was descended upon by a large swarm of bees and chased

Whenever I, or the beekeepers with whom I lived, fell sick we would take propolis. We would use it for most things – cuts, rashes, sore throats, toothaches and ulcers. In fact, every beekeeper keeps it and takes it daily like water. I had the propolis tested overseas and authorised by drug authorities. We started supplying it to pharmacies, hospitals and clinics around Uganda. Propolis itself has a long medicinal history dating back to ancient times with the word “Pro-polis” coined by Aristotle meaning

LOSING A FRIEND BUT FINDING MYSELF OVER COMING OUT by Michael P H I L* A N D I were friends for over 25 years – shared many great times, celebrated weddings and the birth of our children and conducted too many post mortems as to why our favourite football team was having such a wretched season or why one of us was suddenly single. Our friendship had endured for two decades plus despite these days living in different cities and prolonged periods where, due to both our work commitments and the busyness of our daily family lives, we could go 6 to 12 months without talking to each other. It didn’t matter. Either one of us could email or pick up the phone at anytime as though we had spoken just the day before. We were brothers except in name. Bonded through an understanding of what the other person was like and what made them tick. Last week our friendship ended. There was something I’d been keeping from Phil for some time. Years in fact. Could never bring myself to even mention it but felt the need and urge to finally get it off my chest. Essentially, I decided to come out to my closest friend. The response from Phil was worse than I expected. Yet, even now, I’m half expecting the phone to ring at any time and hear his voice on the other end offering muted support and understanding. Isn’t that what long term friendship is about?

I can understand his shock. It isn’t everyday that your best friend aged soon to turn 50 picks up the phone and delivers this type of news. Don’t think it was easy for me. Besides telling Phil and my current partner (who is coming to terms with it slowly), no one else knows. I’m not sure anyone else close to me will be told now if this is the reaction I’ve received from those that know me best. And as I work in head office for a conservative global company at a very senior level, how on earth can I remain true to myself yet still keep my day job? Do I keep it a secret or be true to myself and out myself as a closet medium? Oh yeah. Just realised. Forgot to mention that earlier. That is why my friendship of over 25 years has ended with Phil. I told him I’ve had visits from the other side for longer than I can remember. Told him I didn’t understand it either and I’ve been for MRI scans, seen psychologists and medical experts trying to get to the bottom of what happens when I meditate but to no avail. According to medical science, I’m fine. I explained to Phil that I’m as sceptical as the next person and want science to give me an answer as I’m no crackpot or dial-up psychic doing this for money. I don’t charge a dime nor would I want to. Hook me up

to any machine reputed to be capable of giving a medically trained expert an answer and I’m there. I gave him examples of what I’ve ‘seen’ and ‘heard’. Examples of what I’ve passed on to others who sought me out a few years back. Stunned silence. We spoke about his leap of faith in going to church each Sunday to pray to someone he couldn’t see. We spoke about how it would have been easier for him to accept if I had come out and told him I was gay. I asked him why. It is just far more acceptable. I asked him why. He hung up. I haven’t heard from him since. It’s a shame but I’ve decided that it is more important to stay true to myself. I’m not doing this for money, sympathy or notoriety. I’m doing this for the millions in the world who just happen to have faith in something that doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of mainstream society. God knows I wish I had the proof, the answer or a scientific explanation either way. Not a week goes by that I don’t question my sanity. Even my pseudonym irks me. I’d love to write under my proper name but I know that it would cause too much hurt and embarrassment to my family and I doubt my career would continue with my current employer. It’s just too big a risk at present to

give up my executive job with school fees and a mortgage to pay. Pity I can’t be honest, but that’s life. In the end, it is what it is and what I experience is what I report here and on a blog I’ve started. I mentioned that to Phil. I hope he reads it. I doubt he will. I know there will be more days like this as I continue to come out about all this. The upside is, for the first time in many years, I feel like I’m being true to myself and have accepted who I am. Other than the love I have for my child, it is the best feeling I’ve ever experienced.

MAY STARGAZER by Stella Woods be aesthetically pleasing or culturally desirable. As ruler of Taurus and the evening star, Venus represents the sexual, sensual, physical and selfish or instinctual side of love and desire. Venus has been visible as the evening star since mid March – you may have noticed a bright star in the west after sunset.

Just as we celebrate the fact that action planet Mars is now finally moving forward again, providing a welcome burst of energy and vitality after the stagnation of the past few months, it’s now the turn of love goddess Venus to slow to a standstill and begin her six week retrograde phase. This phenomenon only occurs every 18 months but its effects can be extremely disruptive. Venus will travel backwards from 16th May to 28th June moving from 23º Gemini back to 7º Gemini and offering special insight to those born with personal planets in this section of the zodiac, as well as to Geminis born between 28th May and 14th June, and Sagittarians born between 29th November and 15th December.

Infidelity, jealousy and hatred – the dark side of passionate and romantic love. A cold, hard look at relationships of all kinds, often leading to break-ups but also to reconciliation and to new, more honest expressions of love. Understanding what is needed to maintain personal integrity. A time of failure, resignation or accident. Feeling as though the world has been turned upside down. T H E G ODDE SS V E N US Venus is a dual goddess with a light and a dark face. She embodies the paradox of the sacred and the profane; the divine and the temporal; life and death and love and war. As ruler of Libra and the morning star, Venus represents the refined, ideal, heavenly and socially acceptable idea of love and what we consider to

H A N DL I NG V E N US R E T ROGR A DE Symbolically, the Venus retrograde period makes us re-evaluate our deepest values. As Venus moves towards conjunction with the sun (16th May-6th June in this cycle), we are challenged to let go of old ideas of purity and ‘right behaviour’. Seduced by our desires, we often feel ashamed and try to hide our actions and thoughts, creating ‘sky monsters’ in our minds.

Farewell Mars retrograde – welcome Venus retrograde!

V E N US R E T ROGR A DE M Y T HOLO GY The Aztecs knew a great deal about Venus retrograde and attached great significance to her cycle. According to the Aztecs, when Venus was the evening star and stationary retrograde (9th-22nd May in this year’s cycle), she came to earth in the form of a man. The man encountered Xochiquetzal, the beautiful goddess of passionate sexual love who seduced him, making him break his vows of purity, and from their union, a sky monster was born. In his shame at allowing his baser instincts to take control, Venus descended to the underworld and was challenged to play a ritual ball game, peylota, also known as ‘the game of life’. He lost the game and was sacrificed by the sun. As Venus died he became invisible, resting in the arms of the sun for eight days and was eventually reborn as the morning star, in female form.

Going within (to the underworld or unconscious) a battle takes place between our values (Venus) and our essential self (the sun). When our essential self defeats our outmoded values, we are forced to surrender and release them. We can then be reborn with new values and a more honest heart. Venus retrograde can be extremely challenging, particularly for those in unhappy relationships or who are living a life of duty, rather than pleasure. Imagine a bright torch shining into the deepest recesses of your heart – you can no longer hide your true desires or keep up appearances. When analysing a Venus retrograde transit, look back eight years to see when Venus was retrograde in the same area of your chart (7º -23º Gemini). This area will be vulnerable again. Here are some possible manifestations. • An instinctive understanding of events and interactions. • War on the senses, on attitudes to love and on old, dead values. • Conscious or unconscious retreat.

MAY STARGAZER CON’T… The best way to prepare for the Venus retrograde cycle is to be honest about any shortcomings in your relationships, or any area of life where you are living a lie. Take action to sort out the problem rather than waiting for it to surface and take you by surprise. As Venus rules aesthetics, beauty, fashion and interior design, May and June are perfect months for a physical makeover or home decorating spree. And as Venus is also the planet of money, you may find your finances take a downward turn as the dark goddess heads into the underworld!

SOL A R EC L I P SE I N GE M I N I During a solar eclipse, the life-giving sun that lights our path joins briefly with the dark and mysterious moon as the moon blocks out the light of the sun. In this moment of darkness, yin and yang energies combine afresh, beginning another cycle in the spiral of personal development. Over the past 18 months we have witnessed a series of eclipses in Gemini and Sagittarius as the moon’s nodal axis traverses these areas of the zodiac. On 21st May we have one final solar eclipse in Gemini with the sun and moon making a square to Neptune. The GeminiSagittarius polarity asks us to create a vision for a better future and then work out how to make this happen. Both signs

SC RO T U M NAV IGAT ION LivingNow Reader Michele Kett saw last month’s Stargazer and sent me this email. “Reading your April column about the magnetic properties of the Irish round towers reminded me of a friend who was told by a Hawaiian kahuna that when they had to leave Hawaii after the waters rose, and sail the Pacific, they navigated using their testicles. Whales beach, migrating birds are frozen midair when the magnetic poles shift even a fraction and they lose their way. Airports are constantly changing the signs on runways which inform pilots which co-ordinates to use to get them to their destination for the same reason. We are connected magnetically to the earth, the cosmos and

each other, the ancients knew this and we unfortunately have forgotten.” Well thank you for that interesting piece of information Michele and indeed a quick search on Google reveals that scrotum navigation in the South Pacific is not a myth and was used by South Sea Islanders to read the sea swells and detect changes of current.

MAY STARGAZER CON’T… have a mental focus – Sagittarius is a right brain sign with the themes of wisdom, vision and intuition, while Gemini is more left brain and excels in the world of detailed analysis and communication and sharing of ideas. The square to Neptune symbolises the clash between reaching for an ideal and identifying what is actually possible. Solar eclipses signify beginnings and usually manifest as events in the outer world. Although the energies will be most prominent for a week on either side of the eclipse, the influence on events will continue over the next few months, until the next solar eclipse in November. When an eclipse falls on your birthday, you can count on an eventful and often surprising year ahead. However, you do not have to be a Gemini to feel its effects. If you have any planets or chart

point close to 0º Gemini, your experience of the eclipse will be intensified. SA M H A I N – GAT E WAY TO WINTER Samhain, the ancient Celtic fire festival, is celebrated by pagans on May Eve. The word ‘pagan’ derives from the Latin word ‘paganus’ meaning ‘country dweller’. People living in rural areas continued to worship the cycles of nature long after Christianity was embraced by the cities of the Roman Empire. The word for ‘country dweller’ became synonymous with someone whose spiritual beliefs were based on seasonal energies. Samhain marks the gateway to winter, and is a magical time of passage between the seasons. The nights are long and dark and the veil between this world and other dimensions is very thin. Divine beings, the spirits of the dead and mortals are said to be able to move freely

between one world and the next. This of course is our southern hemisphere Hallowe’en. Samhain is a good time to go within and meditate and then literally and metaphorically get rid of dead wood. A backyard bonfire with friends followed by a feast with warming seasonal food and mulled wine or spiced cider is a great way of doing this. Consider holding a burning ritual to release old energy, old beliefs and old possessions. F E AT U R E D SIGN – TAU RUS From 21st April to 21st May the sun travels through fixed earth sign Taurus. Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac with keywords ‘I have’ and ‘I hold’. The zodiac symbol for Taurus is the bull who luxuriates in the lush fields of plenty until aroused! Taureans love sensual and physical pleasure and are caring and affectionate. They are also patient, steadfast and reliable with excellent taste and enjoy financial security and prosperity. Taureans can be very stubborn and take things literally; so proceed slowly and steadily when dealing with one of these individuals. They usually resist change. Their anger can be awesome as it builds up steadily over a long period of time. When

Taureans are out of balance they often suffer from sore throats, voice and thyroid problems or a stiff jaw. The Taurus colours are pink, light blue, russet and the warm earthy tones. Taurus also has a strong connection with the arts, particularly music. Many Taureans are excellent singers. With their fine taste and patient hard working qualities, Taureans produce things of beauty that outlive them. With their innate understanding of the physical body and material world, many Taureans work in the financial, food, fitness and health industries. Their greatest lesson is to accept and embrace change and adopt a balanced approach to material life and possessions.

RIPPLE NEWS

THERE’S NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT by Jill Fraser WE LIVE IN A CULTURE THAT IS SLAVISHLY DEPENDENT ON INSTANT COFFEE, FAST FOOD AND A MULTITUDE OF LABOUR-SAVING DEVICES, WHERE COMMUNICATION HAS BEEN REDUCED TO 140 CHARACTER TWEETS, MULTI-TASKING HAS BECOME THE NORM AND THE SEARCH FOR A LIFE PARTNER IS CHARACTERISED BY A FARCICALLY UNREMARKABLE AND UNDEMANDING CLICK OF A MOUSE. Yet we’re still strapped for time, still racing against the clock and still battling to master the concept of manifesting more hours per day. Lama Surya Das, dubbed “the Western Lama” by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, maintains that it’s all about “our natural rhythms being at odds with societal structure of time and its constriction”. “People don’t know how to live in the Now and everyone tells me that they don’t have enough time to do what they need to do. It’s all an illusion. It’s not time we lack. It’s focus, priorities and awareness. Life is plenty long enough for those who know how to live fully consciously”, he says. Referring to time as “the ultimate endangered resource” Lama Surya says: “The problem begins with our relationship to time—we experience it linearly by moving forward to do and accomplish things, and lose touch with the ascendant, vertical and deepest dimension of atemporal time, Big Time. “The thinner we spread ourselves the more disconnected we become, leaving us diseased, ageing, anxious and depressed. “We must eschew the notion that stress will melt away if only we could adapt to the frenetic pace of life. Instead the aim is to experience the Eternal Now, in each and every moment - “Buddha Standard Time” (BST, or The Sacred Zone), and live more fully and entirely in the wholly Now– the realm of timelessness where every choice, every action, and every breath can be one of renewal and infinite possibilities, and we actually discover and experience the infinite within the finite and eternity within every moment of time.” LAMA SURYA DAS – SAGE, TEACHER & CELEBRATED AUTHOR Lama Surya Das’ credentials are impressive. He is an international bestselling author, one of the foremost Western Buddhist meditation teachers and scholars, one of the main interpreters of Tibetan Buddhism in the West and a leading spokesperson for the emerging Western Buddhism. He has spent 40 years studying Zen, vipassana, yoga and Tibetan Buddhism with the great masters of Asia, including the Dalai Lama’s own teachers, and has twice completed the traditional three-year meditation cloistered retreat at his teacher’s Tibetan monastery. He is an authorised lama and lineage holder in the Nyingmapa School of Tibetan Buddism and a close personal disciple of the leading grand lamas of that tradition. He is the founder of the Dzogchen Center in Cambridge, Masssachusetts. He says a quote by Leonardo da Vinci, “The moment has no time”, is what spurred him to start exploring what he calls Buddha Standard Time, the wholly and sacred Now. “We gain freedom and are restored rather than exhausted within time through cultivating and refining Nowness-awareness; by being in time but not of it”, he says. “I call this ‘Being there while getting there, every single step of the way.’ Not waiting, not hurrying, doing what must be done, moment to moment, fully connected and engaged: finding spiritual refuge and solace in every single timeless moment of relative time and space, wherever the wheel of time seems to find us. It’s now or never, as always. Time is a very subtle form of energy, which can be expanded or contracted, telescoped, and seem longer or shorter according to the inner powers of the conscious mind. This is up to us.

“Time is life; time is the ultimate natural resource, which we all have right now, and an endangered one. Time is life and life is time, and we deaden ourselves by the amount of time we kill and squander even during this perceived time-famine, when no one seems to have enough time for all they think they need to do. There is more to life than increasing its speed. And life is too short and precious to waste it living someone else’s life rather than ones own. Life is so precious; handle with prayer.” The key, he says, to living in Buddha Standard Time – the Now – is accepting that time is elastic and recognising that it can be both sped up and slowed down. “Most people have had an experience of time slowing down – when in pain, tumbling beneath the waves, on a drug, having a dream or a vision. “Einstein noted that time slows down when you’re waiting for that first kiss”, he chuckles. “What he was saying is that if you are keenly and wholly present and engaged and you’re on the edge of your mental seat, time seems to slow down.” Lama Surya explains that slow motion on film can give us an image of how this process feels internally when we become more aware. “By sharpening your awareness and processing the frames of awareness like a movie frame every step seems to be slower and you can be very aware of your functions without moving slower. All this is achieved by mind-shifting; not thinking more quickly but by greater awareness. This is attention training. This is part of Samadhi or focused awareness. “Become aware of more mind moments in each second or minute and the time between the thoughts. Slow down a little. Be more present. Choose whether or if to respond to stimuli instead of blindly reacting.” Beyond that Lama Surya recommends pausing and considering priorities and choices, and assuming responsibility for them. “Everyone can make more time for themselves, however brief. Even when my life is at its busiest I personally remember to remember”, he says. PRACTICAL STEPS TO ATTAIN BUDDHA STANDARD TIME “I try to remember to take a Breath Break, now and then, in order to enjoy moments of mindfulness throughout the day. I inhale, relax, exhale, center, and smile. Then, refreshed and renewed, I return to what I was doing. When you become good at this simple Breath Break instant meditation, you can go on to Breath Break 2.0, by breathing, relaxing, centering and smiling, and then letting go and letting be. Try it; it’s not as easy as you might think. Resting alert and aware while simply letting all the thoughts, feelings, sensations, perceptions, memories and reaction come and go is the essence of Nowness-awareness meditation. “Breath break 3.0 is to further reflect and inquire: Who or what is aware here; who

Who am I, what am I? This is graduate-level self-inquiry, and not for the faint of heart. Here we plumb and even penetrate the nature of our true identity.” Lama Surya refers to ‘Nowness’ as the ultimate therapy and de-conditioning agent. “Tuning into the present, the moment, is curative, a natural medicine. It heals us because it allows us to connect to the holy now—the sacred, timeless dimension within every moment of linear, conventional time. “This is not a new concept. Faster is not necessarily better; we need meaningful time, quality time and intentional attention, to accomplish our best self’s aims and purposes. Tibetan Buddhism’s esoteric Diamond Path reveals that right now is the perfect time, right here is the perfect place, our presence is sublime, it is the perfectly appropriate teaching lesson, and each of us is the ideal person to be where we are right now. (Perhaps this last perfection is the hardest to swallow, because of how we habitually see ourselves as limited, flawed, imperfect.) These are called the Five Perfections, a marvelous system of elevating how we view the world and all things in it, which can ultimately reveal the innate light of divinity, the Buddha nature, in everyone and everything. “Once taking a Breath Break has become a part of your day, try a more advanced practice of inquiry and reflection by asking: Why do I feel that I must do what I’m doing right now? And whom am I doing it for? If you’re overwhelmed, look for the wiggle room. What can you do to make things

manageable—the project, the to-do list, or the obligation—and avoid being overwhelmed? We must take time to make time for ourselves and our true values and goals. Taking Breath Breaks and moments of mindfulness throughout the day might sound basic and even simplistic, but it can perforate and aerate the claustrophobia of an intense day. This is a life-saving practice, beneficial at home and abroad, because it relieves the stress, which wears out our physical, energetic, and psychological organism.” It has nothing to do with discipline, he says. “Time is like money. We waste and squander it at our peril.” Lama Surya shares that he finds it extremely helpful to focus on trying to “do less and be more”. “This allows me to leverage my time, energy, and resources more effectively, while emphasising meaningful time rather than quantity of tangible external output. “We can learn mindful time management through Breath Breaks and reflection—by returning our awareness to the present moment—one moment at a time— and catching ourselves before the busyness of our lives overwhelms and catches us, since this so often leads to unnecessary stress, helplessness and despair, and even discomfiting feelings of victimisation. “Practising re-mindfulness through Nowness-awareness is a real kindness, to both oneself and others. We come to befriend ourselves and the world, see things more clearly, and live in Buddha Standard Time, the holy Now”, he concludes.
