FIRST TIME TRAVELING WITH A NEWBORN? To feel safe and to enjoy your journey when travelling with a newborn, there are several things that are important to remember. First and foremost, you can minimise the risk of any problems by only travelling once you feel confident in taking care of your baby. This means waiting until he is a few weeks old at least and ideally seeing a doctor prior to your trip to ensure that there are no physical problems, such as ear or chest infection. The same applies to the mother; it is better to make sure that breastfeeding, if done, is under control and well established and that adequate measures are taken to ensure this continues while travelling. Here are the things to keep in mind when travelling with a newborn:
FLYING → Most problems related to plane travel can be prevented or solved with breastfeeding, Sucking minimize the risk of ear pressure problems and will ease your child’s complain If not breastfeeding, then make sure a bottle is available at all times and have boiled, distilled
water to give in case of need for the suction/ hydration but not the food.
HYGIENE → At all times when travelling, you must make sure to wash your hands regularly, use alcohol wipes for you and baby and sterilize all containers for food frequently. Gastrointestinal infections would give symptoms like diarrhoea, explosive vomiting, dry skin, sometimes fever and general irritation and crying. In this case, you must consult a doctor immediately and give plenty of fluids. Prevention of nappy rash by airing the bottom and using zinc oxide barrier creams is also important when the baby has diarrhoea.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST → Keep your baby with you at all times. Use a sling if needed You don’t know when you’ll fall asleep! Additionally, a dedicated car seat is the only safe option when travelling by car or taxi. As always, prepare a list of useful emergency numbers, both local to the area you are travelling to and your doctor in Hong Kong as well.

I’M TIRED
April is always an exhausting month here in Hong Kong. Between the buzz of Art Week and the roar of Rugby Sevens, the already frenetic pace of this city is dialled up a notch to a fevered pitch. Not that I’m complaining. It’s great that people from around the world flock to Hong Kong for first-class events. But by the time spring starts to settle over us, I’m left feeling like I need a recharge, an escape back to nature and relative quiet. And while I could just hop a flight anywhere in Asia, why not try something closer to home? What if one of the most unbeatable getaway destinations was right in my own, extremely large backyard? I’m talking China. So often overlooked in favour of more established tourism sites, China is literally next door just begging for us Hongkongers to explore. The country is bursting with outstanding getaway options to reinvigorate a tired body and mind, and we’ve given you our top picks on p.20. If China is a stretch for you, you’ll be happy to know there’s also sanctuary found in Hong Kong’s wilderness, where the Japanese practice of forest bathing is catching on. Read more about that on p.28. We’ve found some of the best new beauty treatments in town, when nothing will sort you out but a trip to the spa. Check out p.43 for an oceaninspired massage, and p.36 for a massage in tandem, when four hands are better than two. Regardless of where you choose to recuperate, make sure you take the time to breathe, check in with yourself, and give your body what it needs during this fun-filled, crazy month.
MEET OUR CONTRIBUTORS Zoe Belhomme tackles Rugby Week in Hong Kong, with a full lineup of events to get you cheering on p.9. Wildlife tourism can be shady business, but Kate Springer has an elephant sanctuary in Thailand on p.42 that you’ll never forget.

FITS FOR ALL
Bodies come in all shapes and sizes, even when you’re a yogi. That’s why lululemon has released a new range that’s tailored specifically for Asian body types. The Asia Fit style, which is available in the same patterns and designs as the regular-sized collection, has changed up proportions with narrower waistbands and shortened inseams on leggings. Tops are also shorter in length, with necklines that are slightly higher for better coverage. This style expansion is a great nod to inclusivity - if only more fashion brands would follow suit and design with diversity in mind! lululemon.com.hk
MIND MATTERS
Research from the World Health Organisation shows that one in four people will suffer from a mental health problem at some point in their life, which makes it an issue that affects everyone. British mental health charity Mind is now operating in Hong Kong, organising workshops and events to help raise awareness and build community around mental health issues. Throughout April, they’re hosting a multi-day mental health workshop that covers the basics of how to recognise and support anyone struggling. The Mental Health First Aid Standard course provides information about common mental health problems and related crisis situations. It also covers how to support someone in distress, and how to look after our own mental wellbeing. The training will be held over four consecutive Thursdays in Tsim Sha Tsui. Costs $650, with discounts for students and NGOs. Corporates are also invited to attend. For more information, visit mind.org.hk/mind_ hk_events. 11

FRESH CUTS Dining news that’s good for you
GIN AND BEAR IT Boozy nights are fun and all, but we must admit we’re big fans of the no-alcohol cocktail trend. Ceders is the latest nonalcoholic spirit to hit Hong Kong, after industry leader Seedlip made waves last year. Based on quintessential gin notes and available in three flavours, this is one substitute that measures up to the original. Choose your poison: “Classic,” which mimics traditional gin with juniper and floral hints; “Wild” with fiery ginger, cloves and rooibos; or “Crisp,” infused with citrus, cucumber and chamomile. Made from all-natural botanical distillates and extracts, this is a great alternative for anyone going no- or low-alcohol. Ceders is available in sets with Fever Tree Tonic at Drinks&Co on Hollywood Road, or served in cocktails at Behind Bars in Tai Kwun. ceders-alt-gin.com
FLAVOUR FIESTA With windows that open up onto the street and lovely warm lighting, there’s a vibrancy to Pica Pica that lights up this stylish eatery, just opposite Western Market. The tapas menu features classic Spanish tastes, ranging from heavier fare like meat and cold cut platters, or lighter bites of seafood and vegetables for anyone trying to eat clean. And if calories aren’t a concern, the menu is full of moreish morsels. We loved the signature fideua, a dish of thin, vermicelli-like noodles cooked in the paella pan with cuttlefish and accentuated with aioli. The deboned suckling pig with crispy crackling and a sweet potato puree is also sublime. Wash it all down with a glass of the house sangria. Pick up a box of their signature superfood blends if you’re keen to try at home, or just order one of their awesome nutrient-packed smoothies for a taste.

MEAT TWO Remember when the Impossible Burger launched in Hong Kong last year? What a time to be alive, right? Well, get ready to feel it all over again, as Impossible 2.0 rolls out across our fair city. What makes this plant-based protein so different from the first iteration, we hear you ask? For starters, it’s gluten-free and suitable for celiacs and those with gluten sensitivities. The American foodtech brand has also designed a recipe with greater nutritional punch, containing more iron and protein content, and less fat. And then of course, there’s the issue of taste. This new and improved formula serves up an even beefier, umami-rich flavour that suits anything from burgers to baos, stews to spag bols. The updated recipe will be rolled out in 150 locations across Hong Kong this month, so keep an eye out for this second coming. impossiblefoods.com

CHEAT DAY
Because life’s too short to always order the salad
BIRD OF PARADISE Perched all the way at the top of The Murray Hotel, you’ll find rooftop restaurant Popinjays. A popinjay is an old-fashioned term for a parrot, and much like its namesake plumage, you’ll find tropical pops of colour everywhere you turn in this impeccably-styled space. It’s no surprise then, that the same playful palette appears in Popinjays’ newly launched afternoon tea. From blue lobster in a buttery, flaky tartlet to violet mascarpone-filled macarons, both savoury and sweet are vibrant selections perfect for the peckish. The real show-stopper here though is the tableside scone flambé. Choose from Cherries Jubilee or Blood Orange Cointreau reduction that’s made to order and set alight, with your scones sauteed and served aux jus de fruits. Afternoon tea starts at $688 for two people, inclusive of coffee or tea, and the flamboyant tableside scones will cost an extra $90 per pair. Add a glass of champagne each into the mix for an additional $300. 26/F, 22 Cotton Tree Drive, Central, 3141-8888.

Mindful Strength at Ozone Fitness The Buzz: The Mindful Strength class at boutique studio
Ozone Fitness is a 45-minute holistic workout that combines breathwork with stretching and strength training. This multifaceted approach involves a lot of personal attention from the trainer in small groups, ensuring each student gets a high level of support. The Class: After ten minutes of breathing exercises and yoga
flow sequences to warm up, we do strength work using suspension trainers, dumbbells and bodyweight, applying a variety of different tempos. Our instructor has us focusing on our breathing throughout each exercise, making us more aware of how our bodies are responding. We receive close attention to our form, with lots of helpful hands-on instruction. Corrections are often subtle, like squeezing a small muscle in the back, tilting the pelvis or changing the rotation of our arm ever so slightly. We finish with a series of relaxation stretches on the studio’s heated Himalayan pink salt floor, which promotes therapeutic benefits like reducing stress and detoxifying the body. The Verdict: Mindful Strength is an apt description for this class. The strength exercises may seem simple at first, but once you’ve corrected your alignment and added some light to moderate weight, you definitely start to feel the burn in very localised areas of the body. We felt in touch with ourselves, and best of all, worked out muscles we didn’t even realise we had. We left the class feeling revitalised and ready to start the day. The Cost: $220 UG/F, Hang Tak Building, 1 Electric St., Wan Chai ozone.fitness 16
WORKOUT
FitMat Yoga at The Landmark Mandarin The Buzz: If you’ve always wanted to try stand-up
paddleboarding (SUP) yoga but were put off by the open water, FitMat Yoga is a great option. This class is held within the safe confines of the Landmark Mandarin Oriental pool, so you can vinyasa in peace, albeit a bit unsteadily. The Class: FitMat Yoga takes yoga and plops it on an inflatable mat in a pool. Being on water makes simple postures challenging, requiring you to use your core more. We start with basic stretches so we can get our sea (or pool) legs before moving onto flow sequences. Our instructor encourages us to have fun with different movements - which we do with a premature dip in the pool when we try to flip our downward dog. Later, we experiment a bit, with harder poses like headstand or aquatic-themed navasana. At the end, we lay back and dip our feet and hands into the water to enjoy a relaxing savasana. The Verdict: If you’re not blessed with balance, this class might seem like a challenge and not as fun as it’s intended. Then again, who doesn’t love a good cannonball into the pool! Poses are simple and movements are slow, but you can work at your own pace if it’s too easy. Classes like this are a great reminder that we don’t have to take exercising so seriously. Sometimes it’s more about putting a smile on your face than working up a sweat. The Cost: $700 per person. Not exactly cheap, but worth
the splurge to make a splash. To book call 2132-0011 or email lmhkg-spa@mohg.com. Minimum of two students per class. The Landmark, 15 Queen’s Road Central
FOR FUN
VR Gaming at Zero Latency The Buzz: Virtual reality is one of the hottest trends out there, and
we’ve noticed more VR studios cropping up all over the city. We hop on the bandwagon at Zero Latency’s free-roam, multiplayer gaming experience. The Experience: Located in a large space in an industrial building
in Kwun Tong, we’re greeted by friendly staff who explain the four different games on offer. They range from standard video game scenarios, like a zombie apocalypse, to more sedate options that get you interacting with your virtual environment. We choose two different games to play, and our gamemaster Steve gives us a primer on all the FAQs of VR. He helps us suit up in special backpacks and headsets, and we enter the warehouse space to get started. We first play Engineerium, where we explore a mystical Incan-inspired universe by solving puzzles and getting used to the VR perspective. From there, we move on to the next game: Zombie Survival. This involves working as a team to fend off the walking dead as they try to overrun your fortification. It starts off slow but, as zombie attacks tend to do, things quickly get out of hand. The Verdict: Our team of five had mixed levels of experience
and enthusiasm, but this was undeniably fun for everyone. It was a great way to socialise, challenging ourselves in a new setting unlike anything we’d tried before. The ethereal world of Engineerium was actually very relaxing, while Zombie Attack was...less so. It’s still good fun though, and everyone got onboard to help save the day. A perfect option for a rainy weekend, or an alternative to happy hour the next time you’re looking for an excuse to get together with friends. The Cost: For 30 minutes of play per person, costs $300 during the
week or $350 at weekends. Advance booking is required. Unit ABC, 11/F, Montery Plaza, 15 Chong Yip St., Kwun Tong, Kowloon, 2762-0108, zerolatencyvr.com.hk. 17

CLOSET CLEARING FOR YOUR MIND
ALL ABOUT YOU WELLNESS CENTRE
In order to declutter any space, you first need clarity on who you are, what works for you and what doesn’t. Then the process of letting go can begin. When we apply this concept to our minds, we are talking about letting go of past interpretations, beliefs, and emotions that are no longer serving us. Studies estimate the human mind stores between 10 100 terabytes of information. Obviously not all of this data is useful, and much of it contributes to our continuous fears about life. All About You offers a number of services to declutter the ‘closet in your mind’. • Psychic and tarot reading to gain clarity • Healing, hypnotherapy, and regression therapy to let go of the past • Health & Life coaching to create a new future

ZHANGJIAJIE, HUNAN
JIUZHAIGOU, SICHUAN
If Zhangjiajie National Forest Park looks familiar, you might recognise it as the inspiration behind the floating Hallelujah Mountains in the blockbuster film “Avatar”. With thousands of towering cliffs and mountain formations that pierce the landscape, it’s ripe for exploration and adventure. Inside the park, you can hop on one of the many buses ferrying visitors to key sights and attractions. Make sure you check out the breathtaking cable car rides, incredible vantage spots and the Bailong Elevator, a 326m-high glass elevator that whisks you to the top of a peak in just under two minutes. There are plenty of ways to get off the beaten track and explore away from the big tour groups – just make sure you bring a map as it’s easy to get lost. On the way back to the airport, it’s also worth checking out the Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve where you can see the full extent of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area.
Few places on Earth are quite as enchanting as Jiuzhaigou National Park, near the Gansu border. With turquoise pools and autumnal foliage, the scenery here is one-of-a-kind. This UNESCO World Heritage Site had previously been a well-worn tourist attraction that could get crowded. A 2017 earthquake, however, caused so much damage that it was closed for reconstruction. It reopened in 2018, but now only 2,000 visitors are allowed into the park each day. While that could inconvenience some, for others it means far fewer tourists to share this immense and gorgeous space with. The park is well maintained and managed, with an extremely helpful English website and Facebook page used to communicate about the park’s accessibility. The latest update: they’re expecting to re-open from their winter hiatus in early summer 2019 – so get planning!
HOW TO GET THERE: There are twice-weekly flights from Hong Kong Express directly into Zhangjiajie. From there, hire a car to drive you the 155 miles to Wulingyuan.
HOW TO GET THERE: From Hong Kong, book a flight into Chengdu or Chongqing, and transfer to a short one-hour flight into Jiuzhai-Huanglong airport.
WHERE TO STAY: The Crowne Plaza Wulingyuan offers rooms from HK$650 per night and is a short walk to the park entrance. There are also plenty of guesthouses in town.
WHERE TO STAY: There are countless hotel options outside the park, from budget guesthouses to the highend Hilton Jiuzhaigou Resort. For the adventurous, there’s a guided ecotourism program that lets you camp inside the park, letting you get further into the less-frequented areas of the reserve.
TOP TIP: Get to the gate super early or wait until after breakfast when most other tourists have already gone in.
TOP TIP: Book a long layover between flights. China’s airports are notorious for delays, so you won’t want to chance missing your flight home.

TIGER LEAPING GORGE, YUNNAN Halfway between Lijiang and Diqing (also known by its more touristy moniker, Shangri-la), the famous Tiger Leaping Gorge trek forms part of an ancient tea horse trail that transported Chinese tea along the Silk Road to the west. The High Road, as it’s known, hugs the Jinsha River (a tributary of the Yangtze) and meanders through farmland, inns and waterfalls on one side, while an imposing mountain terrain some 12,000 feet high looms on the other, so close you could almost touch it. The ancient trail, now signposted with arrows spraypainted on rocks and walls, is a working access path to this day, and on your trek you’ll encounter farmers herding goats and mules, as well as manning the occasional scenic spot to extract a few yuan from tourists. Expect to spend two nights in the gorge (though many linger in this impossibly pretty area for a week or more) and bed down at one of the many picturesque guesthouses along the way. Reasonably experienced Hong Kong hikers will find this walk relatively straightforward; bolder souls may want to venture all the way down to the Tiger Leaping Stone at the end of the trail. This boulder marks the narrowest part of the river, and legend has it a tiger, pursued by hunters, crossed the river in one bound. The path down and up require use of allegedly “very safe” sky ladders and bridges installed by the local villagers, so you’ll have to decide on your own level of risk.
22
HOW TO GET THERE: From Hong Kong, several carriers fly into Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan. After that, pick up a bullet train straight to Lijiang, followed by a bus or taxi to the start of the trail, which you can organise at one of many tourist information booths in Lijiang. We recommend spending a night in Lijiang for a fresh start the following morning. WHERE TO STAY: Pitch up at any of the charming guesthouses along the trail. We particularly enjoyed cracking open a cold beer on the rooftop terrace at Halfway Guest House. Located deep in the gorge, it has an amazing view of the mountains. TOP TIP: Get a private car to pick you up at the end of the trail. It costs more than the bus back to Lijiang, but the mountain roads are narrow and the drivers… confident.

WORLD SLEEP DAY at Lane Crawford Pacific Place home store MARCH 15, 2019
O
n March 15, Liv readers gathered at Lane Crawford Pacific Place home store to celebrate the Hong Kong launch of Shleep, a luxury merino wool bedding and lifestyle brand dedicated to a good night’s sleep. Over a healthy menu of sleep-inducing canapes, including chamomile tea, sour cherry juice, turkey wraps and low-sugar banana cupcakes, attendees listened to fascinating talks by Sheelp founder Indi McCullough and Sleep HQ founder Kate Bridle, followed an aromatherapy workshop by Aromatherapy Associates. Far from being scratchy, thick and too hot for Hong Kong’s climate, we learned that Shleep’s next-generation of wool technology creates a finewoven fabric that’s breathable, thermo-regulating and moisture-wicking for a thoroughly relaxing night’s sleep. Studies have also shown that sleeping on wool allows babies to sleep longer and deeper than on conventional materials. Attendees also relished the opportunity to receive tips from a certified sleep expert. From limiting screen time and dimming lights in the evening, to ensuring a consistent waking and sleeping time, everyone looked forward to practicing her advice at home. After all, how can you live your healthiest life without a good night’s sleep? Thanks to all who joined us, and we look forward to inviting you to future events!

h, nature. A breeze rustling through the trees, fresh air filling our lungs, green vistas sprawling out ahead - there’s nothing better than spending time in the great outdoors. But maintaining a balanced relationship with nature, or with ourselves, can be hard in fast-paced Hong Kong. While many of us hike or hit the beach at the weekend, we’re often so eager to get to our destination and relax that we don’t truly connect with the nature that’s around us.
WHAT IS FOREST BATHING? Forest bathing is a guided walk with a twist. Participants are invited to engage with their natural surroundings through different guided activities, evoking a deeper sense of awareness and appreciation of our environment. In a session I attended, we were encouraged to touch, observe, smell, and listen to natural items we were drawn to, such as tree bark, and observe the emotions they evoked in us. Bathers also connected with each other one-on-one, and in a group circle, sharing our personal memories of nature. It might sound “New Age,” but humans crave this deep connection with the outdoors. “We spent the first several million years of our existence in forests, not cities, and our bodies remember,” explains Alice Yuen, founder, director and therapist at Alive Wellness Center. “When we spend time in nature, we remember that we’re part of a bigger picture, which makes us feel humble
and grateful for what we have and who we are. That simple perspective-shift can contribute to wellbeing in different ways.”
WHY IT’S GOOD FOR US One in three young Hongkongers suffer from stress, according to a 2018 survey by the Playground Association of Hong Kong, and the city is fast becoming a less desirable home thanks to factors like long working hours. But a growing number of urbanites are veering off of this unhealthy, beaten path and finding respite and reconnection in a different direction. The positive effects of forest bathing resonated with lawyer-turned-Nature and Forest Therapy Guide, Amanda Yik, who began guiding in 2017 after training in the Australian bush. The name of her company, Shinrin Yoku, is the Japanese term for “forest bathing,” where the practice caught on in the 1970s as a remedy to stress. “To me, forest bathing is about letting go, slowing down, and experiencing pleasure. Being in nature reminds us that everything is connected,” Yik says. “I don’t know whether Hong Kong needs forest bathing, but we have plenty of stressed city dwellers and many are curious about what we do.”
29
Forest
A LASTING EFFECT? For those working demanding jobs in a densely packed city, the effects of forest bathing can extend beyond the present, improving how bathers feel and perform when they go back to work. “Forest bathing has a rejuvenating effect on me. When I return to work, I actually feel more focussed,” says Krisdean Law, the Acting Managing Director of Conservation International Hong Kong, and a two-time forest bather. “Each session has been different but, in both, I’ve found that the earth supports my body, and I feel energised and recharged.” Biologically, it makes sense. “When different parts of our nervous system connect, we strengthen our neural pathway, just like hitting the gym to train muscles,” says Alive Wellness Centre’s Yuen. “The more senses we engage, the more pathways we create, thereby enhancing our life skills.”
30
Forest bathing may also help benefit our physical health, from reducing blood pressure to protecting our vision. “Research shows that chemicals produced by trees can strengthen immune systems, Vitamin D from sunlight has been linked to a decrease in the risk of certain cancers developing, and spending a significant time in nature can speed up post-surgery recovery,” says Yuen.
CATCHING ON You don’t need to be sick or feel stressed to enjoy a forest bath, however. “Lots [of participants] are curious about forest bathing, while some care a lot about their wellbeing,” says therapy guide Yik. “Others have tried to meditate, but find that bathing gives them the sense of freedom they couldn’t find in formal practices.” There is one similarity between most of Yik’s clients. “There are definitely more women than men. I think women are investing more time and money in self-care.”
Forest
With phones constantly buzzing and our daily lives jam-packed, getting back to nature is more necessary than ever. “It’s important to schedule time to ‘stop the noise,’ step out of our busy lives and find some calm within,” Yuen says. There are ways to supplement a forest bathing experience in daily life, too. “Do simple things, like pay attention to the weather, or take time to be with yourself in a relaxed atmosphere,” Yuen suggests. And if you’re prone to getting caught up in urban life, there’s always houseplants or using photos of forests around your flat as a reminder to reconnect. After all, nature knows best. Alive Wellness Center offers meditation classes, island retreats, and other holistic treatments for body and mind. For more information, visit alivewellness.hk. Photos: Shinrin Yoku

OKINAWA Forget the beaches and military bases - it’s Okinawa’s food that’s the stuff of legends, not least because of its purported links to wellness and longevity. Carla Thomas samples the goods in Japan’s deep south.

E
ver the outsider on Japan’s archipelago, Okinawa is proudly distinct as the country’s youngest and farthest flung prefecture. Located about 1,500 kilometers south of Tokyo, its distance from major islands like Honshu has left the region relatively removed from traditional Japanese tastes. Instead, you’ll find diets here influenced by a small but strong farming community that emphasises high-quality, plant-based dishes consumed in moderation - which might have something to do with why Okinawans have some of the longest life expectancy in the world. Here’s where to savour every last bite on a foodie’s tour of Okinawa.
COOK LIKE AN OKINAWAN
Roll up your sleeves and get cooking at Taste of Okinawa, a food studio in the centre of capital city Naha. Offering a three-hour long cooking class that specialises in Okinawan delicacies, we start off with a short walk to nearby Naha Public Market. Here, my group and I learn about locally sourced ingredients like bonito flakes and sea grapes - a miniscule algae plant that looks exactly how it sounds - before buying what we need. Back in the studio, a bilingual instructor gives us easy, step-by-step instructions to crafting Okinawa’s signature dishes, which are often plant-heavy and vitaminrich. Goya champuru, for example, uses the 39

infamous ingredient goya - also known as bitter melon. It might sound less than palatable, but this superfood gourd has proven health benefits like reducing blood sugar levels, and packs in some serious vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Besides, when lightly fried alongside some tofu and egg, the bitterness is substantially toned down for a perfect side dish. We also make kombu, an edible kelp that’s braised in dashi and shoyu, and a purple potato-based dessert that’s super rich in carotenoids. Group cooking classes can be booked every day except Mondays for 6,500JPY (3,500JPY for kids). The studio also doubles as a microbrewery, if you’re keen to wash everything down with a local craft beer. 1-6-21 Tsuboya, Naha, Okinawa 902-0065, Japan, +81 98-943-6313, tasteof.okinawa.
STOCK UP ON ORGANICS
If the highlight of your weekend is a trip to the farmers’ market, you can’t miss the Happy More organic market in Ginowan, about a half-hour drive from Naha. It has something of a local reputation for its high quality produce, with over 800 farmers across the island who sell their fruit and veg here. Even more interesting, most of those farmers are small, home gardeners who mainly grow for personal consumption. That means the produce here is as natural as it gets, free from pesticides and GMOs. You can really taste the difference, too. Plump cherry tomatoes, succulent strawberries, crunchy yellow Okinawan carrots - everything I try is an exercise in elevated taste. Beyond produce, there’s also a nice selection of other local and international goodies. I pick up homemade cherry tomato sauce, vegan ramen, and a hibiscus and lime salt, made with Okinawa’s world-famous sea salt that holds a Guinness World Record for its high mineral content. A small kitchen area also offers smoothies made using fruits, vegetables, and herbs grown on-site, and comes highly recommended by locals. Open year-round from 10am-6pm every day. 1 Chome-247-1 Shimashi, Ginowan, Okinawa 901-2213, Japan, +81 98-896-0657, happymore.jp.

MAKE YOUR OWN TOFU
Further north in Nakijin, you’ll find Ai Ai Farm. This serene and peaceful farm that doubles as a guest house was converted from an old elementary school. Staying on theme with the “school” motif, Ai Ai’s mission is food education. Guests and visitors can choose from a variety of workshops that teach them how to make well-loved Asian staples from scratch, like tofu and soba noodles. For the adventurous, there’s even a course in making additive-free sausages, although I stick with the surprisingly time-consuming tofu option. Two hours of work produces one jiggly brick of the freshest tofu I’ve ever tried, with a flavour complex that’s apparently always unique to its maker. Check out the sizeable courtyard as well, where Okinawan fruits and vegetables are grown organically and guests can learn how to plant and harvest these local green goodies. 369 Wakugawa, Nakijin, Kunigami District, Okinawa 905-0412, Japan, +81 980-51-5111, happy-aiaifarm.com.
BETWEEN MEALS
If you’ve had your fill of organic delights and possibly adding years to your life, there’s a good variety of other activities to build your appetite back up. Yoga is becoming a popular pastime here, with many memorable locations that make use of Okinawa’s beautiful landscape and climate. I try an outdoor “Castle Yoga” class at Nagagusuku Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site that’s the perfect backdrop for my sun salutations. There’s also world-class hiking and water sports, including stand-up paddle boarding and diving. For more information check out okinawasportsisland.jp.
RECIPE TO A LONG LIFE Okinawa is famous for its high life expectancy, one of the five “Blue Zones” of the world where people live longer than anywhere else. There are more centenarians per capita here than almost anywhere else, and it’s earned the nickname “Land of the Immortals.” While it’s
unclear exactly why that is, at least part of this longevity can be chalked up to some simple Okinawan diet tips: • Don’t stuff yourself. Practice hara hachi bu, a Confucian teaching that advises eating until you’re only 80% full. • Flexitarianism. Many locals
eat only a few servings of fish or meat per week, instead of at every meal. • Eat the rainbow. An emphasis on whole foods grown locally, such as purple sweet potato or dark, leafy greens mean locals have an extremely mineral-rich diet. 41

PHUKET ELEPHANT SANCTUARY Thailand isn’t the first place you think of when it comes to wildlife conservation. After all, the country’s elephant population has fallen off a cliff, crashing from 300,000 in the early 1900s to less than 3,700 today (primarily driven by poaching and habitat destruction). But I was pleasantly surprised when friends introduced me to Phuket Elephant Sanctuary. Opened in 2016, the 30-acre retirement is home to eight elephants that have spent the majority of their lives in gruelling industries such as tourism and logging. Rides, hugs and baths are off the table, though you can watch them from a distance during a guided tour and feed them some fruit and vegetables by hand. “Naturally, every visitor wants to see this majestic, beautiful and intelligent animal during their holiday,” says founder Montri Todtane. “The best way to learn about Asian elephants is to simply observe them in their natural habitat.” phuketelephantsanctuary.org 42

STAY GREEN AT HOTEL ICON Looking for a green getaway? You don’t have to burn carbon on a plane. Hong Kong’s very own research and training hotel, Hotel ICON, keeps raising the standards when it comes to eco-conscious initiatives. The Hung Hom address is already home to Asia’s largest indoor vertical garden, paperless checkin, energy-saving LED lights, a fleet of 100 percent electric vehicles and a food waste-towater system that’s said to divert 285 tonnes of food waste per year from landfills. And now? It’s the first hotel in the city to install an ultrafiltration and purification system in every guest room. Plastic water bottles are out, and refillable glass carafes are in! In addition, updated rooms now feature in-shower amenity dispensers (replacing tiny bottles), reusable laundry bags and organic APPELLES soap made with biodegradable packaging. hotel-icon.com
DEEP DIVE AT ALTIRA Across the Pearl River Delta in Macau, Altira Spa in Taipa is a wellness wonderland - picture bamboo groves, natural stone accents, juice bar, hair salon, private mani-pedi studio, experience showers and an incredible infinity pool with underwater music. The two-storey spa’s latest treatment sets a new bar: Dubbed the “Prodige Des Océan Face & Body Ritual,” the 2.5-hour experience plunges guests into rejuvenation with marine-based products and a specially designed soundtrack of gentle waves. While you sink into a heated water bed, a therapist begins a rhythmic Kobido-inspired massage that draws from ancient Japanese techniques and mimics the movements of the sea. It all comes full circle with a facial from French skincare brand THALGO, which harnesses potent marine elements such as algae and minerals that drenches skin with nutrients and moisture. altiramacau.com

LIGHT MY FIRE Back for its second year on April 13, the Light The Night Run charity race will reach new heights, and not just vertically. Same as last year, competing runners will race around The Parisian Macao and Venetian Macao, before legging it up all 750 steps of the half-scale Eiffel Tower for a final skyhigh sprint. What’s different this year is on the ground, with a health and wellness festival taking place over the weekend of the race. A lineup of activities like yoga, meditation, entertainment and healthy bites will be on offer, suitable for the whole family. All registration fees for the event are donated to Macau IC2 Association and Caritas Macau, so turn up and show the runners some love while you enjoy the festive atmosphere. Race takes place 7-11pm at the Eiffel Tower at The Parisian Macao. Wellness Fun Festival runs 2:30-11pm on Saturday and 2:30-9:30pm on Sunday, April 14th at the Parisian Macao, Il Prato Event Lawn.
VILLAGE PEEP-LE
WE’RE GEMMING
Easter is big in Macau, but nowhere is it more charming than in historic Taipa Village. For the third consecutive year, the Taipa Village Cultural Association will be offering a variety of Easter-themed activities for kids of all ages that explore this beautiful corner of the city. An Easter Orienteering Competition on Sunday, April 14 gives teenagers a chance to learn about Taipa Village while racing each other in teams to win a cash prize of up to 1500MOP. Over Easter weekend, younger tots can get their faces and eggs painted on Saturday. Anyone keen on a good old-fashioned candy hunt should turn up on Sunday, when children are encouraged to look high and low for those not-so-elusive eggs and treats. Even if you aren’t participating, strolling around this rustic old village is like stepping back in time.
One of the only spas in Macau offering gemstone therapy, The St Regis Macao has a diamond of a deal on it right now. The Refined Journey package offers a 120-minute gemstone-infused experience that promises to harness the mineral elements of precious stones, removing negative energy and healing the body. The treatment starts by figuring out which stones offer you the most benefit, tailoring it to your own unique needs. These gems are then incorporated throughout your treatment. For anyone with misaligned chakras, this is a must-try. Guests who book also get access to the sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and swimming pool for the day. Deal available until April 30, and costs 1,880MOP for a two-hour treatment.
Held at locations throughout Taipa, for more information, visit taipavillagemacau.org.mo/en.

CAN’T LIV WITHOUT
What I always have in my fridge: The essentials: steak and broccoli. Steak is rich in protein, and broccoli is rich in fibre, both of which are an important part of gym life.
MARTY BARR Co-founder, GO24 Fitness
What tips have you got for women who want to start strength training? Get into a gym like ours, where we have a wide range of strength training equipment to help you kick start your strength training foundation, and build on it from there. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Number-one item on my bucket list: I would love to go on an African Safari. I’m fascinated by nature and want to experience the vast remote wilderness and animals in their habitat. My favourite workout song: Hate to Say I Told You So – The Hives
50
My beauty essential: A balaclava. What I'm watching on TV: I’m currently watching Vikings on Netflix. My favourite app: Shazam because I love finding new tracks that I enjoy, and also being able to revisit golden oldies that I might have forgotten. My guilty pleasure: Kinder Bueno and a cup of tea. What health means to me: A strong, pain-free body surrounded by people who support me. Where I go to get pampered (and what I have done): I love Sunny Paradise Sauna for their Herbal Steam room, ice bath, foot massage and pedicure. I rotate through these treatments to help muscle recovery. Alternating between hot and cold helps to drive lactic acid out of the muscle and also combat postworkout fatigue.
Where I go for a healthy lunch: K-roll. They use fresh ingredients and offer the right balance of protein, carbs and fats, plus it tastes delicious! I love the Shrimp Korrito, essentially a burrito-sized K-roll, or Beef Bibimbap, with or without rice. Last plane trip I took, and why: Singapore, and it was this trip that inspired and motivated me for my next gym opening. The larger commercial gyms over there have done really creative things with their spaces and I was inspired by aspects like their lounge areas that serve as a social hub for local fitness lovers. I was at my least healthy when: I was working in Germany. Beer, Redbull and McDonalds had far too big a role in my life and as a result, my health and fitness suffered. One thing I always have in my gym bag: A pre-workout powdered supplement called Ghost Legend PreWorkout in Warheads Sour Watermelon Flavour. It really wakes you up!
