EDITOR’S LETTER

The Wellness Guide Returns

A

nd now for something completely different… Our 2019 Wellness Guide is here! We’ve packed it to the gills (sustainably sourced, natch) with names of our favourite places to eat, work out, shop and practice self-care in the city. We’re spoilt for choice on everything as Hongkongers, which is why we take care every year to curate an entire issue of businesses, brands and initiatives that are worth your money and time. Many of the old favourites are still around, much to our elation, but we’ve also updated it with some new names that have had Liv staff buzzing over the past year. Veganism is taking root in Hong Kong, and we’ve added a massive new section on restaurants who practice plant-based cuisine. Our sustainability section

returns for a second year in a row, with innovative rental and recycling services making it easier than ever to reduce waste and lessen our footprint. This is a list of the cream of the crop when it comes to wellness, and we’re only too happy to compile and share what we know and love. Please use this guide to explore the city and live well, and let us know what you find along the way!

INTERVIEW WITH

JOEI LAU, founder of MindBeauty

Q Explain who you are and what you do for a living. I started my career in finance but ended up moving into the beauty sector, mixing my design and art/ event management experience gained from my time working in Tokyo to launch the beauty salon booking app, MindBeauty. It’s become my core business in Hong Kong. Q When did you first get the idea that you'd like to start your own wellness-inspired company? When I had my first meditation class in Tokyo about 15 years ago. The mantra “outer beauty pleases the eye, inner beauty captivates the heart” really resonated with me, it’s something I very much believe in. Q Do you view MindBeauty as a tech company or a wellness company? Does that change how you run your business? Although we are embarking on an exciting journey to bring awareness of wellness and beauty through “tech,” we’ve also gained a good understanding of the key goals for wellness businesses through our community: partner spas and salons, and our users. We view our-

selves as a wellness company more than a tech company. I think tech is the means to an end, not an end in itself. Our goal is to make wellness more accessible to busy Hong Kong people, and certainly the “tech” parts like our mobile app and other digital elements of our business help to facilitate such a goal, as we live in a digital age. Q What kinds of challenges did you face as a woman starting and growing her own company? Do you think the wellness industry is something women are more invested in? Being a female CEO and entrepreneur, I often feel challenged to balance my family and work, especially at the very beginning of growing my business. But on the other hand, I also feel that this is essential and needed nowadays. More women should be starting their own businesses, and particularly when it comes to wellness to have an impact on what we really need.

Q What lessons have you learned from launching MindBeauty? Remaining true to myself and finding my own voice were the keys to success. More realistically, it’s also important to plan well financially and time-wise. Q What's something about you people are often surprised to learn? My wake up time - 5:00 am, 365 days a year! I believe keeping an “early” and “healthy” schedule are the most important things you can do not only to help your business, but your personal life as well. I feel more positive, energetic, confident and mentally prepared with my “rising early” sleep cycle.

Q If you had an afternoon all to yourself, what would you book for yourself? I would make an appointment for a day spa and yoga. 33

HOW BOMSHBEE

IS CLEARING THE TABLE FOR CONTEMPORARY DESIGN Where are Bomshbee products made? All our products are proudly designed in Hong Kong, with inspiration from the patterns and shapes we see around the city. I got the inspiration for one of our most popular lines of glassware one morning on my way to work when I looked up and noticed one of Hong Kong’s iconic street signs. Our designs are produced in China. We don’t work in typical mass production; instead, we use a smaller-scale manufacturer with highly skilled workers who are able to produce our designs with dedication to the details.

A

fter decades of work in the tableware industry, the Hong Kong-based Lau brothers have launched their own signature brand, Bomshbee. Determined to put Hong Kong front and center in the global design world, the Lau brothers are introducing sleek, contemporary designs based on their belief that thoughtfullycrafted tableware can celebrate the everyday. We sat down with William Lau, co-founder of BOMSHBEE, to hear more about his story to tableware greatness: What inspired the Bomshbee brand? Bomshbee is the embodiment of aspirations from a tableware design company that our mother started. I worked with that company for a decade and received great feedback for my ideas, designs and developments for other brands. My brother, Anthony, and I wanted to show our capabilities by branding our own designs. Our mother began in the industry three decades ago, and in a way, Bomshbee is also about honouring her. Even the name of our company is a combination of her pet names for us when we were children. Sometimes she would say them all together and it came out - Bomshbee! Stephen got the nickname “Bom” because he was always so loud and made so much noise; Mom called me “Shu” because she said I looked like a potato; and Anthony, the youngest, was “Bee” because he was the baby of the family.

What’s the Bomshbee philosophy? Our goal is to bring attention to beautiful objects we use every day. Our philosophy is “the little matters”; we are working to re-imagine everyday essentials and inspire customers to appreciate the simple moments in life. Our mother got her start in this industry 30 years ago. Growing up, my brothers and I didn’t realise how much the little things in our home made our world work. The line of tableware my brothers and I have created goes to the heart of our childhood. What sets Bomshbee apart as a household item? In the tableware industry, there are many big brands but a lack of smaller, independent ones. We’re focussing on customers who appreciate small-scale production, and who want unique products to fill their homes with. Also, we believe in Hong Kong’s position as a global design leader and want to be a part of that locally-made movement. We want to highlight Hong Kong design in the international market and share its beauty with the rest of the world. Interested in filling your everyday moments with a little more appreciation? Visit bomshbee.com.hk for more information about the mission to inspire through design. For inquiries, contact Anthony Lau at anthony@bomshbee.com.

Waste in the fashion industry remains a huge issue, but robotics and apparel company, Unspun, is using tech to solve it, starting with everyone’s wardrobe staple: denim jeans. First, customers have their exact measurements and specifications taken via a 3D body scan before selecting their preferred style and colour. Jeans are then made to order so all you have to do is wait for them to be delivered. Unspun jeans are made from 100 percent sustainable denim from Italy and can be reordered online using your online profile.

RECYCLING

BATTERY DISPOSAL

Because of their toxicity, it’s important to dispose of your unwanted batteries responsibly. There are lots of places to drop off your unwanted rechargeable batteries - for example you can ask

the staff at any McDonald’s outlet for collection or you can use drop-off boxes found in 87 MTR stations, 20 Fortress stores and 26 Pricerite stores across the city. Just make sure to cover the battery terminal with masking tape before dropping off. wastereduction.gov.hk.

Contact the Crossroads Foundation, which accepts donations of most large goods for redistribution to marginalised communities both in Hong Kong and overseas. You might even be given a few dollars for your donation! There are 18 centres currently operated by the ECF, and a further 48 operated by NGOs. Visit tinyurl.com/ecfpoints for a full list.

E-WASTE

With various toxic components, it’s vital to get rid of your old electronics responsibly. The Environmental Protection Department has a centralised responsible processing plant in Tuen Mun that can handle up to 30,000 tonnes of e-waste per year, and its contractors visit every district in Hong Kong regularly to pick up e-waste such as computers, refrigerators, air-conditioners, televisions and washing machines. After successful pilots in Bali and here in Sai Ying Pun, the tech startup is rolling out its affordable reusable packaging at selected restaurants and communities all over town. Partner restaurants will package takeout orders in Revolv’s reusable packaging, and once they’ve finished their meal, customers can drop them off at selected locations to be collected, cleaned and reused.
