ORANGE IS THE NEW FIT

Orangetheory Fitness

Orangetheory Fitness is the latest group personal training workout to come to Hong Kong after taking the US by storm. It’s backed by the science of “excess postexercise oxygen consumption,” which can increase your metabolism for up to three days after working out. Clients wear monitors during the 60-minute sessions to track their heart rate and the number of calories burned. With the knowledge and support of a coach, each client’s stats are broadcast on electronic boards at the front of the class to keep you accountable and motivated. The goal is to stay in the orange zone for at least 12 minutes at a time (hence the name), which means you are increasing your metabolic rate and calorie expenditure. 23/F, Soundwill Plaza II – Midtown, 1 Tang Lung St., Causeway Bay, 5597-7296, www.otfhongkong.com.

ARE YOU MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR SLEEP? Improving wellness starts with a good night’s rest.

P

rofessionals ranging from swimmers to runners, dancers, mathematicians, musicians and high-profile CEOs can all benefit from increased quality and quantity of rest. While many CEOs claim to not sleep enough, the truth is that for the body to perform at its peak, we all need to sleep well – and for around seven hours per day. Too much sleep can be as detrimental as too little, but hitting the sweet spot is not just good for mental focus, but it also helps tissues and organs to repair and regenerate while also normalising hormone production (including those that control appetite, hunger and overall mood). Sleep is when our bodies are able to repair themselves. Growth hormones are produced while we’re at rest and not eating, and protein synthesis takes place, which in turn helps stimulate muscle growth and repair. If you’ve worked out hard and are feeling a bit stiff and sore, one of the best things you can do is tuck in for a good night of sleep. From a mental health point of view, while sleep and its impact on capacity to learn and retain information are currently not well understood, a number of studies – both on humans and animals – suggest that sleep quality and duration do indeed affect learning

and retention. Furthermore, there’s evidence to suggest that sleep actually helps repair brain cells – just like muscles – to help consolidate and retain memories. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, certain phases of sleep can have a significant impact on cognitive ability[1]. If your sleep habits are causing concern – and if you feel you’re not performing at your best – it’s worthwhile to examine how you sleep, and how well you rest (as well as the potential impact your habits are having on your overall health). Our intensely switched-on lifestyle can impact quality sleep, which in turn has a knockon effect that spills into waking life. This doesn’t necessarily mean we have to slash down our hectic to-do lists; it’s more about being conscious of what we do during the day. Arrange priorities so that a great night’s sleep isn’t pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. Instead, take a step back and look at ways to maximise the quality of sleep you do get. At Koala, we have taken great care to develop mattresses to help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer and wake feeling refreshed. All of which are vital considerations for success – both mentally and physically.

IV Sponsored Feature

IV NUTRITIONALS IV nutritionals can help with myriad conditions including the following:

IV infusions are becoming increasingly popular among wellness enthusiasts, but are they right for you? Dr. Winnie Mui of MediSpa gives us the lowdown. IV or intravenous (meaning “inside vein”) therapy is the infusion of liquids directly into the veins. IV infusion is a method of delivering a variety of products such as vitamins (B12, C), minerals (calcium, magnesium), nutrients (dextrose), medicines (anti-inflammatory agents, antibiotics), supplements, amino acids, anti-oxidants (glutathione, alpha-lipoic acid), etc into the bloodstream.

ENERGY

IMMUNITY

vitamin and iron deficiencies can be treated with IV infusions. Improved energy levels can help with recovery from jet lag, fatigue and sports performance.

Vitamins and antioxidants may help to support a healthy immune system. A strengthened immune system helps us fight the flu, the common cold and other virus induced illnesses.

DEHYDRATION

OTHER

IV fluids will rehydrate more efficiently than just drinking fluids. This is popular with athletes after competitions, party goers recovering from hangovers, people including children who suffer from GI upset such as vomiting and diarrhoea, and post-surgery patients.

There are subjective claims of whitening and antiaging effects with vitamin C, glutathione and other nutrients. There are no specific studies to support this, but they are popular in many Asian countries such as Korea, Japan, the Philippines and China.

Interested in IV infusions? Here’s how to make a responsible choice. Consult directly with a Medical Doctor and make sure they are registered. Check the Hong Kong Medical Council website for their List of Registered Medical Practitioners. The physician should ask about allergies, your medical history and current medications. Some practitioners will conduct blood tests before considering infusions. If the staff provide endless excuses as to why the doctor is not available, run, don’t walk!

Are the products registered and new? In China, I have seen IV sets and needles stored in non-sterile bins before being used on patients. Do not try experimental procedures, especially not ones involving IVs! Watch when they are inserting the IV. Your skin must be cleaned (usually with alcohol), the staff should wear gloves, the needle should be uncovered just before insertion, and the IV infusion must infuse smoothly and comfortably. The staff must be readily available and should be checking in

on you regularly during the infusion. If you develop chills, shortness of breath or any discomfort, stop the IV immediately! IV nutritionals are very popular, but are not for everyone. Some people swear by them, while others don’t experience any noticeable differences. Do your research, find a reputable medical provider and proceed with caution and reasonable expectations.
