The Perfect Fit

We all know it can be tricky finding well-fitting, fashionable workwear, particularly when your body doesn’t fit exactly into standard sizing. That’s why we love Isabella Wren’s new e-commerce site that enables women to create their own unique pieces that flatter and fit their shape exactly. The Hong Kong fashion label has developed a technology solution that allows women to browse through a range of chic and beautifully tailored clothing, key in their measurements, and make customisations to areas such as the neckline, length, sleeves, and trims. Items are then individually tailored and delivered to your door within two weeks. This way, you can ditch the fast fashion and invest in pieces you’ll love for years. www.isabellawren.com

JUST THE TIPPLE

We’ve just heard about a company that creates beautiful cocktails and healing teas that are not just fun to drink but also exceedingly good for the mind, body and soul. Each one of Botanist.Co’s handcrafted drinks (some of which many contain high quality alcohol) use superfoods and wholesome, locally-sourced ingredients said to offer a variety of health benefits. Signature offerings include “The Sun and her Flowers” - a honey, herb and green tea drink blended with frangipani-infused organic gin; it’s said to expel heat from the body. Also try the “Down to Earth” - a specially crafted drink with tumeric-infused Yuen Wo rice wine, locallygrown turmeric from farmers in Yuen Long, and organic yacon syrup. They currently have a pop-up store at the Tong Chong Street Market in Quarry Bay on selected Sundays from now until February, but they plan to launch a physical location in April 2018. www.botanistcohk.com.

In the Frame

We all know that the blue light that emits from our various gadgets and gizmos are no good for your health, contributing to eye strain and disordered sleep. If you’re looking for a stylish solution, check out these blue light-blocking spectacles from Boca Blu.. The smart lenses allow you to keep the colour and vibrance of your screen, while protecting your eyes from the blue light, making them ideal for designers, gamers and people who stare at screens for a living. They come in a variety of funky styles and magnifications (from 0 to 2X) and can help to ease eye strain caused by TV and computer screens, phones, tablets and LED lighting. US$79, free worldwide shipping and returns. www.boca-blu.net. 11

MUNCH TIME Located on the Sheung Wan end of Wellington Street, Fete Up is the latest lunch spot to get our mouths watering. It serves up a selection of wholesome and nutritionally balanced dishes that are perfect for people on the go. For just $78, pack your box full of freshly prepared, flavourful proteins, carbs and sides with just the right proportion of macronutrients. They’ll change the menu every few weeks but current dishes include braised beef in red wine sauce, kashmiri curry, and a savoury vegan mince that perfectly complemented their organic coconut rice. Vegetable sides include braised daikon, a slightly spicy Sichuan cauliflower, and roasted pumpkin and kale. Top off your box with one of Fete Up’s garnishes - crispy shallots, sesame seeds or nori - for some extra crunch. And if you don’t fancy heading straight back to work, there’s plenty of space to eat upstairs. 182 Wellington St., Sheung Wan, www.feteup.com. 12

GOING UP Christmas Markets

BEET IT The latest restaurant in Hong Kong to build its philosophy around seasonal and locally-sourced ingredients, Beet serves up a modern take on European dishes. Chef Barry Quek draws on both classic and progressive cooking techniques, as well as his knowledge of Asian flavours, to create a menu that is both authentic and respectful of his top-quality ingredients, which are mainly sourced from organic farms in Hong Kong and China. The menu is relatively small to ensure that every dish is perfectly executed. What’s on offer will change regularly, but expect hearty dishes such as braised shortribs, Te Mana Lamb ($270) and Porc Noir de Bigorre ($360). Beet offers a two- or three-course set lunch on Thursday to Saturday from noon-2pm, or else splurge on their a la carte or five-course tasting menus on Tuesday to Sunday evenings. 6 Kau U Fong, Central, 2824-3898, www.beetrestaurant.com.

LITTLE ITALY Jamie Oliver’s empire has expanded in Hong Kong with another offering in Harbour City. Open from breakfast until early evening, Jamie’s Deli is the more relaxed baby brother of Jamie’s Italian, with an impressive salad bar that sticks to the brand’s ethos of delivering highly nutritious meals that taste great too. We were pleasantly surprised by the prices: a small bowl starts at $68, while the large (and we mean large!) bowl that nets you three salad choices and a hot protein is $98! You’ll also find whizzed-to-order smoothies for $45, as well as a selection of sandwiches, soups, and breakfast items in the morning. Shop 412, 4/F, Ocean Centre, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, www.jamieoliver.com.

Support local small business and do your gift shopping at one of the many markets happening every weekend this month. They’re a ton of fun, too!

Potted Plants

Plastic or real? How about a living, potted fir to hang your baubles on instead? Then you can keep it, nuture it, and use it next year.

Seasonal Excess From disposable decor to ridiculous packaging, we’re all looking for ways to minimise waste this year.

Winter Padding After one too many mince pies, those yoga pants are getting harder to put on, both physically and mentally. Whoops.

LASHES

MEDITATION

Xtreme Lashes at The Mandarin Oriental The Buzz: Is it just us, or is everyone getting eyelash

extensions right now? The Mandarin Salon has launched its own luxe version in partnership with US cult brand, Xtreme Lashes. Created by Jo Mousselli, Xtreme Lashes uses only hypoallergenic synthetic fibers and has developed a medical-grade FlexFusion adhesive that is safe and comfortable. The Treatment: The session kicked off with an initial

consultation where our therapist advised on the best lash thickness, curvature, length and colour for us. After getting comfy in the pre-warmed bed (a fab touch), the therapist cleansed the whole eye area and then applied tape so that the lashes wouldn’t stick to the skin. She then painstakingly applied 96 individual fibres by hand to our existing lashes to give a natural look. The Verdict: The treatment took around two hours so,

it’s not something you can nip out in your lunch break to do. People say once you’ve had lash extensions, you’ll become addicted, and after our session, we can see why. For at least three weeks you don’t have to worry about wearing mascara and you wake up looking brighteyed and bushy-tailed. If you’re preparing for a special occasion such as a wedding, they are certainly worth the investment. They are also a great option ahead of the party season.

The Buzz: Founded by Kit Lee, a certified meditation and

mindfulness coach, singing bowl practitioner and yoga instructor, Sitsat Meditation is a modern and secular meditation practice. We attended an early morning session at Usagi Gallery, which was followed by a light breakfast of fruits, pastries and tea/coffee. The Class: We sat barefoot in a circle on meditation

cushions. Although the whole class took nearly an hour, the meditation session itself was only 20 minutes. Kit made sure to introduce and explain the five essentials of meditation before starting, and reminded everyone to approach it with an open mind. Her soothing voice guided us through the session, bringing our focus back whenever our minds drifted away. The Verdict: Since it was our first time meditating,

the 20-minute session was a bit of a challenge - we kept fidgeting. However, with Kit’s guidance, we were motivated to find our Zen. Classes are run on an unfixed schedule in the Central and Sheung Wan area; check the website to find out where and when the next event is taking place.

The Cost: If you’re out to treat yourself, the Mandarin Salon

The Cost: Classes are generally $150 and lunchtime

is the place to do it. A full set of Xtreme Lashes extensions there costs $1,950, while refill treatments (which are recommended every three to four weeks) are $975.

READY SET GLOW with Rachel Read

GIMME MOOR Hong Kong-based makeup artist Natasha Moor knows a thing or two about making a woman look her best - which is why I’m so excited that she’s launched her own line of ultra luxurious lipsticks. With two finishes available - Silk Suede (10 shades) and Molten Matte (11 shades) - these ultra-luxe lovelies are packed with pigment and boast some serious staying power. I’m also slightly obsessed with the sleek design of the Silk Suedes’ gold-andblack casing, which features a push-release button and mirror. Even better, they’re all made without parabens or sulfates, contain vitamin E for natural moisturising properties, haven’t been tested on animals, and a percentage of the profits get donated to ISSHR, an organisation that supports victims of human rights abuses around the world. Silk Suede lipsticks $180 each, Molten Matte liquid lipsticks $160; shipping to Hong Kong costs $80 (prices converted from USD and calculated at checkout according to current exchange rate). natashamoor.com.

SLEIGH BELLES I’m always a sucker for all the holiday beauty collections, but my fairy on top of the tree this year (and every year really) has to be the Christmas range from Lush. We’re talking Christmas pudding bath bombs, snowman shower jellies, shooting star soaps, Buck’s Fizz body conditioner, sugar plum fairy lip scrubs and a whole array of great-value, pre-wrapped gift sets for the ultra lazy, all with their usual fantastic green credentials to boot (cruelty-free, vegetarian ingredients, ethically sourced, no nasty chemicals… you get the gist). A couple of extra things to highlight this year: 80 percent of their Christmas collection is “Naked” meaning it comes with absolutely zero packaging for extra eco-friendly brownie points; and my absolute all-time favourite Lush product, the lavender-scented Twilight shower gel, is back in full-size to buy in Hong Kong this year (I had to resort to hauling minis from gift sets last year). Merry Lush-mas, y’all! Christmas products start from $35, gift sets start from $160. Available in Lush stores citywide including SoHo Square, 21 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, 3915-0638, hk.lush.com.

Aoife McGillion tries her hand at kitesurfing in Indonesia

K

itesurfing is my newest favourite thing in the world. Given my fickle nature, this is not necessarily an accolade, but I do really enjoy this sport, despite (or possibly because of) its reputation as an extreme activity, the sole preserve of daredevils and adrenaline junkies. Why do I love it? Firstly, it turns out that I am not totally horrendous at it. Believe me, I’m not very good at it either, but there is something about it that’s really special. It is an unpretentious skill that allows you to harness the natural power of the wind to fly and leap higher than you ever thought you could. The best kitesurfing spots also tend to be in adventurous, off-the-beaten-track locations, which in turn attract fun and interesting people. And - best of all - it’s no longer just a sport reserved for the crazy and the rich. With an uptick in interest, it’s increasingly accessible, too. By way of a backstory, my recent trip to Indonesia wasn’t my first foray into the world of kitesurfing. I did my IKO Levels [International Kiteboard Organisation qualifications] 1-3 in Boracay, four years ago. This year I

38

had three weeks off work and wanted to travel in region, and perhaps tick off some things on my bucket list. In choosing my destination, I looked into the kiting high and low seasons (generally determined by wind strength and consistency), popularity of the spots (I wanted somewhere relatively quiet, having been slightly traumatized by the maniacal goings-on in Boracay) and I wanted somewhere with a kite school or at least a guide available. Asia has several kiting spots that are recognized as quite good, but the one that fit my criteria best was Lombok, Indonesia. Lombok offers a couple of spots for kiting. I tried two of them. I found the wind in Kuta (that’s Kuta, Lombok as opposed to Kuta, Bali) quite disappointing. So I was happy to head East to the more remote location of the Ekas Peninsula. I found a hotel and a kite school there that were total game-changers. The resort is incredible. The kite school, fantastic. The trainers and guides are even more tremendous and the backdrop is just… beyond comprehension.

WHERE TO KITE

Kaliantan beach & Kaliatan KiteSurf School Starting from scratch? There literally is nowhere better to learn than Kaliantan lagoon, with its uncrowded, pristine beaches. I was there mid-season and the most people along the stretch of coast at any one time was 10. I found myself resenting that I had learned in Boaracay, which was far more hectic and actually really stressful. If you are like me, and worried more about hitting someone else with your kite than you are about anything else, then Kaliantan is totally going to be your jam. At Kaliantan KiteSurf School (kaliantankitesurf. com), the instructors are incredibly patient and very quick to correct your technique. They’re more concerned with teaching the skills of kiting, rather than just overpowering students in order to get them standing as quickly as possible. More advanced? The Kaliantan area boasts consistent winds of 15-25 knots in the high season of April to October. Because of its size and orientation, Kite surfing is excellent at the large reefs in the entrance of the bay and on the broad lagoons and fringing reefs nearby. The winds are best from April to late September, as they get the same weather as the popular kiting site at Lakey Peak in Sumbawa. Bring your own gear or rent some from the school. The best kiting spots are a 10-15 minute drive along some really remote dirt roads, and the Ekas Breaks staff will happily arrange transport or scooters for hire.

OTHER THINGS TO DO

Surfing Ekas Bay appeals to all levels of surfers. The two surf spots, Ekas Inside and Ekas Outside, offer great surfing in stunning scenery with both safe and difficult waves. Ekas Breaks Resort is located only 1 kilometre from Ekas Bay, where the two surf breaks are reached easily with the hotel’s boatmen in 10 minutes. Depending on the tide, swell, wind and your desire to surf something different, there are other potential waves in the area. You can rent surf gear directly from Ekas Breaks or bring your own. Transport out to the breaks is also easily arranged.

39

Travel

Other adventures Boat tours, mountain-biking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, amazing snorkeling at Pink Beach and village tours are just some of the options available for a day away from kiting. Treks to Mount Rinjani, the second highest volcanic mountain in Indonesia, can also be arranged through the resort. I chose to add on a trip to Komodo National Park to see the dragons after my stay in Ekas, but that’s a tale for another day.

WHERE TO STAY

Ekas Breaks Ekas Breaks (www.ekasbreaks.com) and Kaliantan KiteSurf School are related companies. You may think you would be a captive audience with Ekas Breaks, as there are not too many other accommodation options in this neck of the woods, but there is nothing about the place that is disappointing. The resort was established by a group of friends in 2014 and is run by two of the loveliest people imaginable, Max and Manon. They offer 12 traditional Lombok-style bungalows made completely from wood and covered with a thatched roof, and six additional Family Suites. All accommodation comes with air-conditioning and a private bathroom with hot water. The bungalows are set in a garden with a pool view. The Family Suites are ideal for families or groups looking for more privacy.

EATING The hotel restaurant offers a really wide array of western and Indonesian food. I love any whole grilled fish, and they had a different one available practically every day. The rest of their menu is also super and boasts a decent range of vegetarian and non-veggie options. For variety, you can take a trip to one of the neighboring local villages for food, or you can arrange transport back to Kuta town where there are some fun restaurants. I recommend El Bazaar and The Mexican.

GETTING TO LOMBOK AND AROUND There are daily flights to Lombok via Bali from Hong Kong. Transport can be arranged from Lombok International airport to Ekas Breaks. The journey takes about an hour. I recommend arranging a transfer through the resort, or hiring your own car as parking is available.

TIPS: Kiting season in Lombok is April through to October, with winds between 15-25 knots in the high season. Check out www.globalkitespots.com for information on peak seasons for kiting and global locations. A beginner? You can spend a few days in Kuta learning the basics before going to Ekas. There are a number of kite schools in the area and they are worth checking out. 40

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER It’s almost Christmas, which means it’s a perfect time to think about pampering getaways to Macau! To mark the holiday season, Iridium Spa at the St. Regis Macao has launched a luxurious spa treatment in partnership with Gemology, a French skincare line that uses precious stones in its high-tech formulations. The treatment features refined diamond micro-powder

particles together with poinsettia and orchid extract, plus a to-die-for facial massage using polished precious stones. The luxurious regimen targets tense, aging skin and are designed to promote circulation and boost collagen production. A diamond-infused mask with anti-aging properties diminishes the appearance of wrinkles and creates a luminous glow. The treatment is MOP2,200 - but the spa is currently giving away a fullsized Gemology skincare set worth MOP1,200 for anyone booking the treatment. And trust us, you’ll want to take the products home with you once you see the results. 38/F, St. Regis Macao- Estrada Do Istmo, S/N, Cotai, +853 2882 8898, www.stregismacao.com.

COCO LOCO Cocos Hung Heng is a very local shop that has been around since I was a kid. Situated right off the main drag of St Paul’s Ruins is this tiny little coconut shop that specialised in freshly made coconut ice cream. It’s easy to spot as it has coconuts hanging out the front! Their famous recipe has been around for decades and is still as healthy and sugar-free as it was 30+ years ago. The ice cream is made only from coconut meat and coconut water - making it sugar-and dairy-free - and at just MOP20, it’s a total bargain. Kids love it too, and it comes served in a cup for easy handling. Cocos Hung Heng also sells mango and purple yam ice cream, as well as coconut milk, coconut flakes, and freshly chopped and ready to eat coconut cuts. FIT FAM with Kate Farr

2017 has been a busy one, and it seems that 2018 may be even busier, with the coming Year of the Earth Dog forecast to be flat-out for all of us. If you’re expecting a new addition to your litter this year, there’s some good news from one of Hong Kong’s top maternity hospitals. I’ve also discovered a gorgeous kids décor brand that is perfect for an eco-conscious nursery, along with an adorably thoughtful present designed especially for preemies. So take a deep breath, read on and I’ll see you on the other side… Merry Christmas!

CUT SOME RUG If you’re looking for beautiful, durable kids décor that will last, look no further than Little P. Specialising in handtufted, eco-friendly rugs made from non-allergenic New Zealand wool, as well as cotton muslin playmats and plush cotton velvet cushions, this local brand's designs are playful, colourful and are made to withstand daily use by (let’s be honest) the least careful members of the family! While prices are higher than some retailers, you’re paying for high quality, handmade items that will survive long after they’ve swapped their Moana dolls for boy-band posters. Prices range from $695-$8,250. For more information and to order visit little-p.com

FIRST FRIENDS Premature babies can often require a prolonged stay in a neonatal unit, which is difficult for both newborns and their parents. Enter Bondifly, a Dutch-made cuddly, designed in partnership with some of the Netherland’s leading neonatal units, and made especially for the tiniest of tots. The butterfly-shaped comforter has detachable wings for parents to wear and “scent” against their skin, helping with the bonding process even when Mum and Dad can’t be close. It also has a number of antennae for babies to grasp, reducing the risk of them dislodging essential monitors or tubes. Finally, the super-soft wings can be wrapped around the baby, effectively creating a comforting cocoon to snuggle into until it’s time to head home. $269. Available in Hong Kong from mother-organic.com. 46

 Where I go to get pampered: The most I’ve done lately is to get a deep tissue massage or acupuncture with my physiotherapist. It hurts but I leave her office feeling light, and my body thanks me for the care.

CAN’T LIV WITHOUT

I’ve ticked it off already but it will always be my number one: I went to Hawaii to watch the Pipe Masters surf competition last year. Next I will travel to The Maldives for more diving and surfing.

 My favourite workout song: I like to listen music from Brazil, my home country. Especially Brazilian rap and funk. I even sing while working out - it helps me relax and I have more fun.
