EDITOR’S LETTER

MUM’S THE WORD

Mothers are caregivers, teachers, nurses, cheerleaders, warriors, the list goes on and on…. why wait until May to celebrate them? We’re doing our first-ever maternity issue! Check out p.32 for a comprehensive directory of our favourite baby and maternity services in Hong Kong, from where to stock up on baby stuff to our top choices of pre- and postnatal fitness studios. Ever heard of Jamu? It’s a traditional Indonesian belly binding practice that helps women who have just given birth with their midsection woes. We review the treatment on p.16. Full disclosure: I don’t have children. To say I learned a lot putting this issue together would be putting it mildly. But through my initial ignorance, I realized how much there was to pregnancy, childbirth, and everything beyond. You guys, there is so darn much that mamas have to go through! From navigating Hong Kong’s government hospitals (see p.34 for more on that) to strengthening a weak pelvic floor, the women out there who carry a child and bring it into the world are nothing short of superheroes. So this one’s for the mums. The ones new to the baby game, the ones about to give birth, the ones excited to be a mama one day, and the ones who get up every day and do the most important job in the world, rain or shine, in sickness and in health. We’ve got you.

MEET OUR CONTRIBUTORS Writer and new mum Zoe Belhomme finds herself in a bind when she reviews Indonesian postnatal treatment Jamu belly binding on p.16. Love is in the air, and Kate Springer has the inside scoop on Asia’s most romantic getaways. Find out where on p.42.

Bubbles that won’t break the bank? MiraSpa’s Champagne massage is Rachel Read’s deal of the month. Read all about it on p.36. Shhh! Emma Williamson goes inside a Vipassana silent retreat on p. 38 to discover the secret of total stillness.

Our Macau columnist Sally Victoria Benson checks out Macau’s newest cafe on p.44, an oasis to give you pause.

LUCK, LOVE & GOOD FORTUNE

R

ed is known as the festive colour of Chinese New Year. Many Chinese believe the colour symbolises joy and good fortune, which is why it can be seen everywhere, from red envelopes to decorations to clothing. It might not suit everyone’s fashion sense, though, so if you’re not keen on an all-red ensemble, get a little help from these stunning red-themed jewelleries to accent your best festival dress attire. And what would the Year of the Pig be without a little pink? Living coral, Pantone’s colour of the year for 2019, is a tasteful pink with a hint of orange. It’s the perfect trend to give or receive for Valentine’s Day, which comes hot on the heels of Chinese New Year. These pink-hued jewellery pieces will have you and your loved one seeing 2019 through rosecoloured glasses.

A nourishing afternoon tea set featuring a good balance of savoury and sweet items, you’re sent home with a set of travel-sized beauty products at the end of it! TREATMENT

Postnatal Jamu and Slimum treatment by Restoring Mums The Buzz: The traditional Jamu postnatal massage originates from 17th century Indonesia, but in Hong Kong, we’re just learning of the benefits of belly binding. We trialled Restoring Mums’ five-day, 45-minute Slimum Tummy at home. In addition to reducing excess fat and gas around the middle, Jamu treatments are meant to support new mums’ natural healing so they can get back to feeling normal again. The Treatment: Prior to the start of the treatment, we’re asked to send a photo of our postpartum bodies. We then speak with a consultant to go through our specific programme. Each client is offered a slightly different variation depending on their needs. We were told we had excess gas, water retention and ample love handles (at least she was honest), and recommended a Jamu treatment on Day 1 followed by their own Slimum mask and massage for the four subsequent days. Our personal therapist comes to our home and sets up everything in the comfort of our bedroom, including a heat pack for the back and tummy, hot stones for the massage and relaxing music. First, a warming masque is applied to our tummy while our back is massaged using one of their bespoke oils. After 15 minutes, we’re turned over 16

and the process is repeated on the other side. Strong strokes are used across the abdomen to help close up any separation and stimulate lymph drainage. At the end of each treatment, the therapist tightly binds our belly area and on the last three days, adds a corset for additional support. The Verdict: Whichever way you deliver, having a baby takes its toll on your body. While on the pricier side, this treatment offers some much needed R&R and pampering. We loved the strong massage and the comforting warming masque. Keeping the binding on for 8-12 hours is uncomfortable at first. However, after a few hours it does loosen and we get used to it. Overall the results were impressive, and in addition to losing fat, we feel less bloated after five days. It isn’t the centimetres lost that won us over, though. It was the full hour of focussing on ourselves while someone else was on baby duty! Prices: Start at $8,740 for a five-day course, up to $44,800

for an ultimate body restoration over 20 sessions. restoringmums.com

WORKOUT

Postnatal Yoga at The Yoga Room The Buzz: The Yoga Room in Sheung Wan has always been popular with yogi mums for their regular prenatal and Mum & Baby classes. But they’ve only recently added postnatal classes to their schedule. Music to new mummy ears! The Class: At eight weeks postpartum, this was our first time back on the mat. We were looking for a class that would ease us into yoga. Classes are small and intimate with lots of student/teacher interactions. We kicked off with some gentle meditation and breathing techniques, before moving into poses that help counteract the effects of breastfeeding and holding a newborn. Moving through a mix of hatha poses and vinyasas, the pace of the class was slow and controlled so we can focus on the way our body feels in different positions. Our teacher, Michelle, leaves plenty of time at the end for supine relaxation poses - the best bit! The Verdict: We loved that this class targets the typical

pain points of new mums, focussing on supporting their postpartum recovery. We felt looser and relaxed, and motivated to practice alongside the other new mums. For a stress-free way to get back into yoga, we give this new postnatal practice a solid thumbs-up. The Cost: Drop-in classes are $280, for more info on class packages, visit yogaroomhk.com. 15/F, 104 Jervois St., Sheung Wan, 2544-8398.

The Yoga Teacher:

F

rom modelling to yoga to launching popup discos, there isn’t much that Hong Kong influencer Rosemary Vandenbroucke has started that she hasn’t kicked butt at. Her latest challenge? Motherhood. Rosemary gave birth last year, on the heels of a super typhoon no less. She shares her lessons on how to - sometimes literally - weather the storm during childbirth. Q How would you describe your pregnancy in general? What was the best part? What was the worst? The worst part were the random gushing nosebleeds, or the horrible glucose test where you had to fast and then drink cups of sugar water. Also, the constant reminders, both self-inflicted and from others, of what I couldn’t eat and what I shouldn’t be doing. Q How did you balance fitness and wellness with your pregnancy? Naturally being pregnant affected my fitness routine, especially in the last trimester. Somedays I found myself out of breath and feeling faint

Q Tell us about the delivery. Did anything unexpected happen? I started feeling mild contractions during the super typhoon Mangkhut, one of the worst in Hong Kong history. We were worried we would be giving birth at home on our own, as it was terrifying outside. Thankfully the contractions died down significantly that morning. One of my best friends lives next door and drove us to the hospital as there were no taxis or Ubers available at all. The roads were blocked by the destruction of the storm; what should’ve taken 10 minutes took almost two hours. My birthday is September 18th. We arrived at the hospital on the 17th at 11:00am. I wanted to share the same birthday as my son, so we asked them to hold off breaking my water. I tried to pass time by watching comedies and disengaging with the contractions as much as I could. Finally at 10:30pm they broke my water, and at 1:11am on September 18, Hendrix was born. Best birthday present ever! Q How about the postpartum period? How did you deal with the emotional and physical demands of the first three months? I’m very grateful to have taken the advice to get a pui yuet [confinement nanny] for the first month. She was amazing, taking care of baby and me. She cooked all my meals and helped with the latenight feeds. I was able to produce good quality breastmilk and even restart my yoga practice again a week after giving birth. Q What advice would you give to pregnant and new mums? The best advice would be to take all the advice you get with a grain of salt, as everyone will have an opinion but everyone’s situation is different. Tune in to your intuitive self and do what you feel is right for you and your baby. 23

Cover Story

Q A lot of women are afraid of childbirth. What would you say to them to reassure them about the process? I don’t think I can easily say one thing for all women. However, when talking to them and realising what it is that actually makes them scared, I can usually give them a few things to focus on before and during their births. I try and help them to have healthy expectations for their births, know the environment and the support or lack of support there may be. Find ways to feel strength and support within, as opposed to relying solely on others.

The Midwife:

HULDA THOREY Founder & Director, Annerley

F

ew women have seen more births than veteran midwife Hulda Thorey. Founder of midwife clinic Annerley, this mum of four has nearly two decades of experience helping women in Hong Kong bring their babies into the world. She reflects on the state of Hong Kong’s maternity services and how to best prepare for childbirth. Q What drew you to midwifery initially, and what has kept you there? Initially I was inspired, after being a nurse, by having my own children. The midwives who supported me through my pregnancies and births, including the ones I worked with, were incredible women who really had an impact on me. After that, it just became this very strong passion to combine professional clinical care with kindness and real support to families that otherwise might be in a vulnerable and challenging situation.

24

Q How have Hong Kong’s maternity services changed over time? I have been in Hong Kong for 18 years and it has not changed a great deal overall. However, especially in public healthcare, there is more training for the midwives in how to keep childbirth normal and how to help women feel more comfortable. Access for partners in the labour room has not really improved and in private healthcare, I don’t particularly feel that things have changed much. Q What’s something you would change about maternity services in Hong Kong? More respect for women’s choices and family-friendly care. Q What’s something you always recommend women bring with them to hospital that might not be on your typical “what to pack” lists? A sarong or mini skirt. And something crunchy.

Q What’s the number one concern that couples giving birth in Hong Kong have? That they will not be able to be together during birth and that they will have trauma to their perineum. Q Any practical tips for pregnant ladies or new mums on how to prepare? Yes, many! First and foremost to figure out how they can, even in difficult situations, find a way to see things in a positive light. Whatever happens during pregnancy, birth, after birth, in their relationships, when they feed their babies, when they have toddlers and so on - have a toolbox where you rely on yourself to feel calm and in control. At the end of the day, you cannot really prepare for what will happen.

Cover Story

Q Weak pelvic floor is an area new mums often worry about. What exercises can help with that? My pelvic floor go-to is what my clients now dub “blueberry breathing,” because the goal is to try and pick up an imaginary blueberry with your pelvic floor muscles as you exhale. You can think of these as kegels or clenches. Your physiotherapist can do an internal exam or ultrasound to see the degree of pelvic floor dysfunction, if any. Q Hong Kong recently announced an increase in statutory maternity leave to 14 weeks. What else can be done to support new mums coming back to work? I think a flexi-return to work option is really important, as most mums still aren’t sleeping continuously at that mark. If there was an option to do three days in the office, and two half-days for three months, or something to that effect, it would do wonders for the transition into the workplace. I also think there needs to be better paternity leave in place, so fathers can bond with their babies and squash the idea that fathers aren’t valued in the postpartum period.

The Personal Trainer:

ZIGGY MAKANT Personal Trainer, Goji Elite

A

fter giving birth in 2016, personal trainer Ziggy Makant gave up the long, gruelling hours of private client work to focus on maternal fitness. With a background in CrossFit and certifications in pre- and postnatal fitness, Ziggy has got some top tips for getting back into shape post-baby.

Q There are a lot of myths around nutrition for new mums. What advice do you have for anyone breastfeeding? Eating the rainbow is the easiest go-to. Just look at your plate and make sure you have a carb source, fat source, and protein source. If you’re a breastfeeding mother, fat and carbohydrates are the literal building blocks of breastmilk, so it’s really important that these are prevalent in your diet. Your milk will be more nutrient-dense if your own diet is more nutrient-dense. So try to eat ALL the colours of the rainbow, not just green and beige.

Q How did being pregnant affect your fitness routine? I had to take a massive step back as I didn’t have the energy that I had previously. I went from training five to six times per week to just once or twice. Having said that, my job is physical so although I wasn’t specifically training, I was still active and on my feet all day. Q What is your favourite exercise and why? Personally, I just love pushups! They’re a great exercise for mums to help re-engage core muscles as well as strengthen and tone the arms. 25

ndlessly energetic and upbeat, Trixie Velez is a onewoman band for Hong Kong’s cardio connoisseurs. After years of teaching at Flex Studio, she started her own gym in 2016, building a cult following both online and in the studio. After giving birth last year, Trixie gives us the low-down on mumpreneurship.

Q Your business is rooted in a strong social media following. How did you manage your online presence throughout and after pregnancy? When I was on maternity leave, I actually had more free time, so in between breastfeeding and taking care of the baby, I would stay active on my social channels. I like to think I used my pregnancy as a way of connecting with a new audience and inspiring mums-to-be and new mums to stay fit and healthy. Q How long did you take off after having your little girl? Two weeks after delivery I went back to work two hours a day and I officially went back to my old schedule at four weeks postpartum. Q That’s fast! What made you go back to work so soon? I’m really passionate about what I do, and so it’s important that I am hands on with my business - plus I have to make sure my clients are keeping themselves fit and healthy. Going back to work so soon gave me a chance to share my experiences and support other Defin8 ladies going through the pregnancy journey.

26

Q You seem so on top of everything. Do you still feel the guilt? Oh, everyday just leaving the flat is a struggle. Thankfully, in my line of work I’m active which helps keep my sanity and gets those endorphins going. We all know that postpartum blues are extremely common and so getting a daily dose of exercise keeps me healthy, physically and mentally. This in turn enables me to take care of my daughter better. Q Has being a mum had made you better in your professional life in any way? Yes, for sure. Straight away I noticed I have more patience and I generally get less stressed. I let the little things go now whereas I wouldn’t before. Also, before getting pregnant I was certified in preand post-natal fitness, but it’s only since I’ve gone through it myself that I can relate to my clients and give them the exact support they need. Q Is there a product that you just couldn’t live without? My breast pump and breast pads!

The Chiropractor:

DR MICHELLE ZHOU MCCULLOCH Chiropractor, Founder & Director of UP!health

Q How would you describe your pregnancy in general? The best part is definitely feeling little kicks and hiccups in there - it sounds crazy but you do sometimes “forget” you are pregnant, so those little moments remind you that you are literally growing a small human being! The worst for me was having back issues (sacroiliac joint strain) pretty much throughout the entire pregnancy. My patients all thought it was quite ironic considering I am a chiropractor, however knowing the statistics - over 50 percent of women experience back pain during pregnancy, with the sacroiliac joint most commonly affected - it was no surprise to me. Q Explain why you believe chiropractic care is an important part of the pregnancy and birth process. During pregnancy, natural hormones in the body have a relaxant effect on the joints of your pelvis in order to allow room for your

LET’S HEAR IT FROM THE BOYS THE ROOKIE

TOM RICHARDSON AGE: 31 OCCUPATION: Yacht Broker Expecting his first, a girl, with wife Eve, in March. Q How have you been supporting your wife through her pregnancy? In lots of ways. Eve was quite sick in the first trimester and is very tired in the final months, so I am trying to take on the majority of the household chores. 28

Q What’s been your biggest surprise as you’ve prepared for parenthood? The sheer number of different pram designs and manufacturers... it’s insane! Q What are you most looking forward to as a new dad? Teaching my daughter about the world and introducing things from my childhood such as swimming, sailing and camping. I also can’t wait to have a reason to play with Lego, water pistols and remote control cars again!

MARK WRIGHT AGE: 37 OCCUPATION: Sports Director Welcomed his first child, Willow, with wife Clare in January. Q How did you feel about the whole birth experience? growing baby and eventually for the delivery itself. It’s an essential process that the woman’s body goes through, however this adaptation also causes a lot of strain and stress. The third trimester is a challenging time for the body, as your baby nears their final birth weight. Spinal and pelvis alignment issues are more common, especially in subsequent pregnancies. While back pain is an obvious symptom of alignment issue, more important is the potential effect it can have on the position of the baby or your delivery. Q Were there any issues for you, as someone who works in a more hands-on industry? As I mentioned, I had back pain throughout my pregnancy and it was likely exacerbated because I was in a physical discipline. I treated patients until I was 33 weeks pregnant. Having regular chiropractic treatments early on, as well as doing regular Pilates and having prenatal massages, helped keep my body mobile and strong.

every person will have their unique journey that is far from “textbook.” Q What advice would you give to pregnant mums, as well as women in the postpartum period? During pregnancy, try to slow down and include one or two things daily that takes care of you - whether it’s a walk or a massage or a few deep breaths with your eyes closed. Also, seek professional help if you have aches and pains - don’t wait. After the baby arrives, go with the flow and take it one day at a time. Remember that you are amazing and you grew and delivered this amazing baby in front of you!

Q Did your background as a chiropractor help you with your pregnancy at all? Yes and no. As a chiropractor who has been working in the maternity field for the past 12 years, my knowledge and experience helped in making informed decisions along the way which is very important. At the same time, it also gave me a false sense of security going in. I think the truth is nothing can truly prepare you to become a new parent and

Q Be honest, what’s been the hardest part? Going back to work after five days of paternity leave. Hong Kong gets that part of things seriously wrong! Q What’s been your most useful and pointless baby products? The Silverettes have saved Clare’s nipples! Perhaps our most pointless are the West Ham nappies - god knows what we were thinking!

THE GRADUATE

JONATHAN YIP AGE: 37 OCCUPATION: Entrepreneur Proud father of 18-monthold Owen. Q What is your favourite baby product and why? Little Baby Bum YouTube channel. I don’t know how we could survive a flight without it. Q How do you and your partner share the parental responsibilities?

My wife and I work, we have a helper during the day. We don’t have clearcut responsibilities, we just try to work together as a team to survive each day. Q If you could give one piece of advice to a dad-to-be, what would it be? Be proactive and do things before your partner asks, it’ll make all the difference. Q Go on, give us your best dad joke… I dreamt last night I was a muffler…. I woke up exhausted. 29

“We want to educate our customers on more eco-friendly choices that are best for their babies as well as the planet.” One of Baby Basics’ most popular brands is Childs Farm, an all-natural bath and body line from the UK that’s gentle on young skin and rings in at less than $70 per product. “We work really hard to keep prices fair for our customers,” Arati adds. With rents in Central some of the highest in the world, why did the sisters choose to open a physical shop? “A standalone store is very important to us, although we do also offer online shopping. It was our dream to find a convenient yet affordable location for a physical store so we could connect meaningfully with our customers and provide the highest level of customer service. We want to build a community and really get to know the families of Hong Kong and what they need.” The new space is specially designed to welcome families, with a dedicated chill-out area where you can park spouses and grandparents while you shop. There are also baby-changing facilities, a breastfeeding area, and even a spot where working mums can come and pump. Arati welcomes all mums - not just customers - to use the facilities. “It can be hard to find somewhere to pump or breastfeed in Central,” she says. “We want all new parents to feel welcome here.” Unit 701-703, 7/F, Lansing House, 41-47 Queen’s Road Central, 2311-1048, babybasicshk.com.

We loved working at the store and helping new parents, and we really didn’t want to start afresh with another employer,” says Arati. “We appreciate everything we learned at Bumps to Babes but we are excited to start a new chapter with our own company, Baby Basics.” Value for money and green products are two pillars of the Baby Basics philosophy. “As business owners, it’s our responsibility to constantly be on the lookout for new, innovative products that can also help protect our environment,” says Arati.

WHAT’S A PUI YUET?

LIV’S GUIDE TO GOVERNMENT HOSPITALS Thinking about giving the government system a go? Here’s what you need to know.

I

f you’re a Hong Kong ID card holder, you are entitled to subsidised maternity care at government hospitals across the city. The care is excellent if no-frills, and as private hospitals in Hong Kong don’t have neonatal intensive care units, you will automatically be sent to a government hospital if there are any complications. However, the system can be daunting if you’re new to Hong Kong or don’t speak Cantonese. Here’s what you need to know to get the most out of the government system. HOW TO REGISTER 1. First, you’ll need to confirm your pregnancy with your local doctor (a local family doctor is fine) with a urine sample. Once you have that, have your doctor write you a referral letter for maternity care. 2. Call up your nearest Obstetric Outpatient Clinic and make an appointment. You will be asked your estimated date of conception and will be seen for the first time at around 12 weeks. You will need to bring you and your partner’s

Hong Kong ID card, doctor’s referral and proof of address dated within the past six months. For follow up appointments you’ll need to bring your antenatal record book, HKID, appointment card and urine sample. 3. There are nine public hospitals with antenatal departments in Hong Kong, and 33 Maternal and Child Health Clinics (MCHC). Note that if you are registered to give birth at Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam, outpatient appointments are taken at sister hospital Tsan Yuk in Sai Ying Pun. 4. Once you have been seen and registered at the Obstetric Outpatient clinic, your subsequent appointments will take place at your nearest MCHC. However if your pregnancy has certain complicating factors (for example if you are an older parent, are carrying twins or have gestational diabetes) you will be seen at the hospital directly for more specialised care.

A confinement nanny, also known as a pui yuet, is a postnatal assistant who visits each day, or even lives with the new family, for a month after the baby is born. Her job is to allow mum to rest after the vigours of childbirth during the 30-day confinement period, in which the mum doesn’t leave the house, or in fact do much besides rest up and look after the baby. The pui yuet also teaches parents how to care for the newborn, and cooks nourishing soups and meals to help restore energy and boost milk supply. WANT TO GIVE IT A GO? THE SOUND OF SILENCE:

A JOURNEY INTO VIPASSANA

One of the world’s oldest meditation techniques, the practice of Vipassana has been taught for over 2,500 years. Emma Williamson takes us inside a 10-day silent retreat in India. 38

S

itting in the sticky South Indian heat, I waited to hand in my phone, laptop, books, and journal - all my prized possessions. I looked around at the group of strangers I was about to spend the next 10 days with. No one uttered a word - and this was, of course, the entire point. We were gathered there to undertake a Vipassana meditation course, otherwise known as a silent retreat. Ten days of straight meditation, with no communication of any kind, no technology, reading, writing or listening to music - total isolation from the outside world. Over 100 hours of meditation and 240 hours of silence, I calculated. That’s a lot of time with your own thoughts.

VIPASSANA EXPLAINED

A practice of mindful meditation, Vipassana (meaning “insight”), teaches students how to harness the understanding that in order to live at peace with the world and ourselves, we have to first understand our inner reality. As the Greeks used to say, “To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom.” Vipassana works by developing awareness of the interconnectivity between the body and mind. The technique involves observing sensations that arise across the body and resisting the impulse to react. The process is said to train the mind to control emotional responses and dissolve negative thought patterns that have become our narrative, equipping us with the tools to face inner and outer demons.

MY JOURNEY TO VIPASSANA

After being in Hong Kong for four years, I was living at the heart of what had first attracted me to this fast-paced, glittering city. I was swept up in its dizzying lustre, yet felt life was moving so fast I didn’t have a chance to stop, process and make meaning of it all. I noticed that the more connected I was, the more desperate I was to unplug. I was yearning for something that I would get only fleeting glimpses of while practicing yoga, or lost in thought on my ferry commute: stillness. Reading up about meditation, I was drawn to its beautifully simple philosophy that most of our problems and, therefore solutions, lie within. I was determined to crack the practice, but could only manage ten minutes before persistent thoughts would pull me away. I knew there was one way for me to truly experience it, and that was through full immersion. 39

TEN DAYS OF SILENCE

I chose a retreat in India and boarded a flight. After a sixhour taxi, train and tuk-tuk journey, I arrived at a remote location on the outskirts of Kerala’s backwaters. The accommodation was basic with no AC, cramped dorms and, as I would later find out, bedbugs and mice that would keep us company at night. Stuck around the centre were reminders of our daily schedule, which began at 4am with an ominous gong. 4:00 am

Retire to your room - Lights out

On the first day we were warned of the vigorous mental training we were about to undertake in order to “remove the impurities rooted in our subconscious.” Needless to say, I was terrified. The next ten days would be an intense journey deep into my mind, with some of the most difficult tests of patience and determination I’d ever faced. The first three days felt like a lifetime. Days dragged on with only meals and break times to look forward to. Meditation sessions were slow and my mind was filled with incessant chatter and consuming trains of thought. Aside from the monotony, one of the hardest struggles was the pain from sitting for long periods of time. I would roll out of bed in the mornings aching all over, with tight muscles and hips that felt like they belonged to an old woman. Knowing that a third of the group were former students, some back for their fourth time, completely baffled me. Why would anyone willingly do this again? 40

What I did find surprisingly easy was the silence. There was so much being processed internally, not having to engage with others was a relief. Silence gave time for thoughts to fully unravel and space for new perspective. Fresh childhood memories would appear as if I was reliving them again, but this time through a clearer lens. From day four onwards, my mind quietened and the real meditation began. I’d tapped into an inner state of calm that made concentration easier. I was even able to sit and observe a sting from a mosquito, how the sensations would rise and eventually die down if I resisted the urge to itch. While I was disconnected from the outside world, I felt even more connected to nature. My mind became bright and sharp and I noticed the intricate details of flowers and plants around me, appreciating their intelligent systems. The natural environment was my entertainment, and I once sat crouched for almost half an hour watching a lizard as it basked in the sun. On days nine and ten, I experienced moments where my awareness was so heightened, I could feel sensations, like a tingling vibration, across every inch of my body. Lost in a moment of pure stillness, I felt transported from the hot room in which I sat, surrounded by strangers I hadn’t yet said two words to.

POST-VIPASSANA

Stepping out of the centre on day eleven, my mind was calm, peaceful and fully refreshed. It was as if I’d pressed a reset button. Looking around at my fellow meditators, their faces glowed with ear-to-ear smiles. We’d undergone the same process but each completed a highly personal journey. Now two months on, I’ve found the real test has been reconnecting with this inner calm once life goes back into motion. Above all, the experience has shown me the importance of making time for stillness. Will I be one of those return Vipassana visitors I once found so baffling? Yes, without hesitation.

L TIPS PRACTICA • Having a regular meditation routine will make the transition into the course easier, but don’t be put off if you have never meditated before. • Prepare your body with regular stretching and yoga exercises to ease tight hips for sitting

• Do the research to find the right centre, using helpful resources like dhamma.org. • Apply early. Places often fill up months in advance. India is a good option, with a straightforward visa process.

• Make sure to pack comfortable, loose clothing. Saviour items I brought were tiger balm (for sore muscles) and a nasal inhaler for preventing a blocked nose. • Give yourself a couple of days after the course to reintegrate back into normal life. 41

There’s lots to celebrate this February, from Chinese New Year getaways to Valentine’s Day! Get ready to paint the sky red with these romantic adventures from Vietnam to Bali.

HIT THE COAST IN CAMBODIA Cambodia is most often associated with its amazing Khmer temples, such as worldfamous Angkor Wat, but the country’s largely untouched jungle and coastal areas are starting to lure travellers elsewhere. For starters, eco-luxury resort Alila Villas Koh Russey just touched down on its own private island in the Koh Rong archipelago, bringing with it pool villas, sunset cruises and the brand’s signature minimalist aesthetics. Planning an escape? As part of its opening celebrations, the hotel has teamed up with Shinta Mani Wild, a new luxury camp in Bokor National Park, to offer guests a “Twin Destinations” package, which will take travellers on an eye-opening journey from Cambodia’s jungle to sea.

FIND YOUR BLISS IN BALI

Apurva Kempinski Bali 42

Bali has come a long way since Elizabeth Gilbert’s "Eat, Pray, Love" inspired travellers around the world to find their bliss. Since then, the island’s become synonymous with cool clubs, surf schools, fresh food and enviable beaches. And now there’s yet another reason to go: Apurva Kempinski Bali, which opened on February 1. Inspired by Bali’s rice terraces, the hotel’s cascade-like architecture appears to tumble down a cliff in Nusa Dua, overlooking the Indian Ocean. In addition to a collection of 475 stone-clad villas and suites, there’s also six panoramic restaurants and bars (including Koral, Bali’s first aquarium restaurant!) as well as an oceanfront spa, gym and 60-metre pool. From local artwork to the hand-carved wooden decor, there’s plenty to fall in love with at this ambitious new address. kempinski.com/bali

Slowly, slowly, airlines are moving towards more sustainable inflight services. Among the early adopters? Portuguese charter airline Hi Fly announced plans to become plasticfree by the end of the year, replacing single-use plastics with biodegradable alternatives. And in Asia, Cebu Pacific replaced all non-recyclable utensils with bio-compostable cutlery, biodegradable paper cups and compostable wood stirrers in an effort to curb waste across its 400 daily flights.

FAT SPREAD Uniquely Macanese, the local gastronomic tradition of Cha Gordo, or “fat tea,” is a spin on afternoon tea you won’t find anywhere else. Originating in the late 20th century from a blend of Macanese, Cantonese and Portuguese cuisines, a Cha Gordo usually has an array of local dishes, finger foods and cakes. It’s best celebrated in your Macanese grandmother’s home, but failing that, make a reservation at The Manor at the St. Regis Macao, which offers a sumptuous semibuffet spread and limitless coffee and tea. Costs 148MOP, every Saturday from 3-5:30pm. St. Regis Macao, 1/F, Cotai, Taipa, +853-8113-2777. themanormacao.com.

CALMIN’ COMMA Located on one of Macau’s oldest streets, Pace Coffee is a brand new addition to the city’s burgeoning coffee scene. Calming and cozy, this cafe’s charm is in its oasislike feel in the city’s bustling central location, and the proof is in the punctuation. “We use a comma as our trademark so that, like a comma, people can stop by and take a break before moving on,” according to the owners. They have expert baristas on hand to whip up your fave bevs, using beans sourced locally from Macau roaster Blooom Coffee House. And if you’re going dairy-free, Pace offers oat milk brand Oatly, which has finally made its way to Macau. Yum! 49 R. Dos Ervanarios, +853-6238-0391, facebook.com/ pacecoffeemacau.

HAPPY AS LARRY Located right off the main square of San Malo, Larry’s Place is small but serves up a mighty range of healthy drinks and bites to grab on the go. The takeaway soups, salads, and rice bowls are delicious - bonus points for offering vegan sushi! Everything is made fresh in the open kitchen where you’ll usually find friendly owner Larry, always keen to chat up his clean-eating clientele. Drop by for a coffee and chinwag, but make sure it’s before or after lunchtime, as it’s their busiest time. 2C Beco do Gonçalo, +853-6528-9786, larrysplacemacau.com.

I like to start the day by: I always start by drinking two big mugs of warm water after brushing my teeth. Then I nurse my son, Austin. The thing I like to do most with my baby is: I'm always kissing his head, because it's so round! I prepared for my delivery by: I kept an open mind and stayed pretty relaxed because I knew that I wasn’t 100% in control of the situation. For once, I had to just go with the flow. My favourite workout song is: "Cake" by Flo Rida

My favourite mummy product is: Coconut oil is the best! I always have in my fridge: I love QUOlixir, it's a coconut, probiotic kefir drink. I also have loads of different vegetables, and my favourite fruits kiwi and dragonfruit. And of course, chocolates and coffee beans!
